Converting an image sequence to a Movie Clip - Flash CC

Hi Everyone,
Hopefully I am just doing this wrong.
I have a sequence of images I want to convert to a movie clip symbol.
This is what I'm doing:
I select all the frames in the timeline and hit f8 & choose movie clip as the symbol type.
When I drop the newly created symbol back on the stage it only contains the very last frame
of the animation.
Is this just not possible?

You can do this.  Here are the steps:
1.  Select desired frames
2.  Copy frames
3.  Create movie clip symbol
4.  Paste frames into movie clip symbol
If this is something you do frequently, there are extensions that streamline this process.
Edit:  Here's a link to the extension "New Anim Clip".  It's about a third the way down the page.

• Converting bitmap image sequences to Flash

Hello,
I use LightWave 3D to create a set of characters that are
simple talking heads. Composited in Mirage and edited in VT4, it's
all bitmap images. You can see a sample here:
Subversive
Entertainment
That version was intended for TV but isn't going to sell. I'd
like to try it as an animated editorial cartoon embedded in a Flash
player at online newspapers. But when I compress the video it
doesn't convert as cleanly as I know a direct Flash file would. I'd
like to import the image sequences into Flash and converting them
to symbols(?) or movie clips(?) or(?)...
What would be the best way to handle the image sequences in
Flash? They are currently 180 frames long for each character, but I
could reduce the image sequence to as little as 60 frames. Once the
image sequence is converted to a set of symbols(?) they would be
re-used over and over.
I imported a 180 frame image sequence and it put one image on
each frame in the Flash timeline. How would I convert that entire
image seqence to a sequence of symbols(?) that I could re-use. When
I exported it as a movie it made a .swf file that looks great but I
don't think that's what I want to work with within Flash. (I'll
create a differnt background in FLash as well.)
Whew,
Hope this made sense.

after importing, select the entire range of keyframes
containing your image sequence. Right-click
over them and select COPY FRAMES.
Open Library and create a new symbol.
PASTE FRAMES into frame 1 of this new symbol.
On main timeline create a new layer (delete original layer)
and drg instance of your new symbol to
it. Now you have a nested animation that can be reused.

• Converting a nested sequence into a single clip

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to convert a nested sequence into a single clip?
I have captured several forty minute mini-dv tapes and there were a lot of timecode breaks, my user preferences made FCP generate a new clip every time the timecode changed.
I like to make subclips from a single master clip when I edit so I added all the broken clips into a sequence and nested them which has created a single clip within a sequence, but it has labeled the footage as a 'sequence' in the browser as opposed to a 'clip'.
I think I need to strip the footage of its timecode but to not want to have to print to a blank mini-dv cassette and then re-import, if anyone knows of a solution to this problem it would be a great help.
Many thanks.

File - Export - QT Movie... Current Settings... don't make it self contained and DON'T trash your original captures either!!

• CONVERTING images sequence into a video clip

Hello,
I got a TIFF sequence I exported to modify stuff image per image in Photoshop and now I'd like to convert it back to it's original video format.
How do I proceed?
Right now I was putting image on asequence settting all of them as 1 frame and placing them one after the other; this get very tedious when there'S alot of frames.
I'm sure another way of doing this exist which I'm not aware of , please instruct me.
Thank you.

Save and close. Open a new after effects project file, go to "After Effects" > "Preferences" > "Import" There you can say whether your sequence footage should be imported at 24 fps 30 fps 23.976 fps or whatever. After you have done that double-click in the project folder to import your footage.
Click on the first frame. An option will come up saying something like "This looks like an image sequence, would you like to import it as one?" Check "Yes" and "Import" you now have the image sequence as one item in your project directory.
Dump it into your timeline and AE will automatically create a comp to match the settings of the footage. Export the comp.

• How can I convert my animation into a working movie clip that can be used with a new scene?

Hello all,
First and foremost, I AM A TOTAL FLASH NOOB. I want to preface this and make it incredibly clear how new this all is to me. I LITERALLY started using flash this morning; that is precisely how new I am.
With that being said I am going to do my best to explain what I'd like to do.
I have created an animation of a spider moving its legs back and forth. I want to be able to combine all of the layers into 1 simple animation that can be imported into new flash scenes with the animation exactly how it stands. I have figured out how to convert the whole animation into a symbol AND I have figured out how to import the movie clip from the library. However, herein lies my problem. When I open a new flash scene and import my animation, I play it and it does nothing at all. It's just the static image of the spider I created with no movement.
I've spent the last couple hours trying to figure out (and doing my own research) what I have done or didn't do to get to this point. I'd be willing to bet I am just going about the entire process incorrectly and I'm simple overlooking a basic facet of the program.
Any insight to fix my ignorance is greatly appreciated.
(P.S. Hell, I don't even know if I am using the correct terminology so for all I know I am confusing every person who has taken the time to look at my question. If I am using incorrect terminology please correct me to avoid future hang ups. Thank you.)

Ned! This totally worked! Thank you! I knew there was a tiny piece of this whole thing that was preventing me from making everything work. Unfortunately as my luck would have it, although I have the movieclip working the spritesheet converter I'm using now no longer recognizes the movie clip. The converter says there are 7 frames in the animation, but doesn't display any working sprites. Just a blank sheet. Frustrating to say the least.
I'm just going to throw everything out on the table here:
This is the video tutorial i'm using to convert my animation into a spritesheet. I've done the steps exactly as directly up until the point I actually click "Begin Conversion." When begin conversion is selected, it shows the movieclip exists on the bottom left underneath "list of movieclips" but doesn't actually show any individual sprites.
Here's the simple sprite converter I am using.
The irony of this whole situation is that you have successfully helped me make a working movieclip (which was the important piece), but the converter no longer recognizes it. Whereas before, it would at least show the image on the 1 frame of animation it had.
If you wanted to to take a stab at it and see if you can successfully get it to work I'd be appreciative. If not, I totally understand as you have already been incredibly helpful and have my eternal gratitude for getting me this far. These animation programs can be quite overwhelming when they so vastly differ from one another. Don't even get me started no Anime' Studio Pro.

• Compressor 4 drops frames when converting 25fps image sequences

I am using Compressor 4 to batch convert 30fps and 25fps 1080 tiff image sequences to Uncompressed 10bit 422.
I have created custom presets for both 30fps and 25fps.
The 30fps conversions are fine.
But the 25fps conversions have missing or dropped frames and the resulting clip is too short. For example a 106 frame image sequence becomes 88 frames when converted to Uncompressed 10bit 422 QT. (which suspiciously similar to the 83.33% difference between 25 & 30 fps)
I have double checked my setting and can not find a problem (see grab)
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Update: I have found a work around for this problem, but it is not pretty!
By using the 30fps setting even for 25fps sequences, every frame gets included in the resulting QuickTime. But it plays at the wrong frame rate, so I then use Cinema Tools to change the frame rate to 25fps. Then everything is fine.
As Compressor 4 has been around for while, I can't believe this hasn't come up before!

• Jagged Edges and Unstable Images when converting from Image Sequence to DV

Hi,
I have an Image Sequence (very good quality) that I'm trying to convert using Graphic Converter into DV NTSC Video.
I chose Progressive scan.
I find that the Images appear to have Jagged Edges especially when there is movement involved. Also, the entire image as a whole appears to be Unstable/ Vibrate Slightly.
Does anyone have Experience with this?
Thanks,
Rajnesh Domalpalli

Ntsc dv should be interlaced. also if you are viewing on a computer monitor the footage will appear nasty. It's best to view via an NTSC monitor.Do you have Final cut? if your images are correctly sized you should be able to drop the sequence into a final cut sequence set to DV NTSC and render out the resulting video. You will likely need a multiformat monitor as I believe the standard in India is a PAL variant PAL B not NTSC . in NTSC the screen is filled first by odd lines (Field1) then by even lines (Field2)thus a single pixel line will appear to turn off and on as the screen fills between odd and even lines. Straight lines and angled lines exhibit aliasing and flickering particularily when viewed on a computer monitor because computer screens fill the screen progressively from top to bottom and at a much higher refresh rate than NTSC. hope this helps

• FCutExpress HD 3.5, HOw do I Treat an Image Sequence as a Video clip?

And edit it as if it was a video clip
My images are an animation i exported from a 3d program, but i exported as IMage sequence using PNG format.
I know how to import into Final cut,, but I'm not sure how to edit them as a BLOCK, and drag them to the viewer so i can workr with them as if it was a video clip.( I tried selecting them all in the timeline and dragging to the viewer and it seemed to work but in the viewer it was only one image(one frame ) )
Then also how would i add video transitions and effects as if the image sequence was actually a video clip?

Hi -
You can use Quicktime Pro to make the clip, if your images are sequentially numbered. Open Quicktime, choose File>Open Image Sequence, and select the first frame of your images. Quicktime will ask what your frame rate you want and then create the movie.
Once it is done, go File>Export and choose Movie to Quicktime Movie. Then select Options, and select the codec etc, that you want to edit with (DV, HDV, Animation, etc.) and then export the file and save the exported file.
Import that file into FCE and you should be ready to go, it will behave like any other movie clip.
Hope this helps.

• Export to DPX Image sequence and keep master clip timecode?

hi guys, shane i hope your out there!!
i need to export (1920x1080i/50) pro-res master conform clips to DPX Image sequence for external grade, every time i've tried it exports fine, but each clips has a default timecode starting from 00..., i need to maintain original t/c as grade is external and i will be recieving files back for re-conform and online etc. i have less than 1 hour to give answers to producer, this is the first time we've used this workflow, i really want it to work as this is what guys like us wake up in the morning for, i'm sure there must be something simple i'm missing. i have a tape ready for a lay off as precaution but i really dont want to be defeated !! i'm using glue tools plug-ins any help would be much appreciated. please help me.
regards.

i've had to manually override timecodes on export, not at all ideal and tedious as ****, please tell me there is a simpler way of doing this, this plug is supposed to make your life easier, any feedback/advice greatly appreciated.

• Sequence Settings for .mov clips from MPEG Streamclip

I'm converting some DVD clips (from old DVDs I created) that I exported to QT using MPEG Streamclip.
When I put them in the timeline sequence, I have to render everything.
Can I change the sequence settings to avoid this? And can I change the settings of a sequence that already has clips in it?
Thanks.

I set MPEG Streamclip QT Export to:
QT Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC
Frame Size 720X480 (DV-NTSC)
Quality 100%
http://i44.tinypic.com/29zdhr9.png
I set FCP sequence:
Frame size 720X480 NTSC DV (3:2)
Compressor DV DVCPRO - NTSC
http://i44.tinypic.com/of3h8h.png
I still need to render. And the aspect ration looks squished in a bit. Like I've set something wrong.
What am I doing wrong? How should I change the settings:

• Changing imported image with layers to movie clip

Yes I have imported an .ai file into flash with several
layers on it. When I then converted it to a movie symbol it
flattened all the layers down. How can I convert it and keep the
layers editable?

They are editable, just within the movie clip. Double click
it either on the stage or in the library.

• How do I convert 5 frames into a nested movie clip?

I have animated a buttefly flapping it's wings, now I want to make it fly using 'motion tweens'. what do I do?

To convert the frames into a movieclip, create a movieclip symbol, copy the frames, and paste them into the timeline of the movieclip.
To create motion tweens, you need to have the same symbol at both ends of the tween, so if these 5 frames contain the same symbol, just in different orientations, then you just need to add the motion tween to each keyframe except the last.

• Converting 180 imported images in AE CC to image sequences that reside in same folder as stills.

I have 180 imported stills in a composition. I have corresponding image sequences that I want to convert each still to. The stills are named "x-00001.jpg", and the other parts of the image sequence are in the same directory. How do I get AE CC to make the leap to find the rest of each image sequence aside from manually using "Replace Footage" with each image to check the image sequence box?

Your workflow is flawed when you put your placeholder images and your image sequences in the same folder. Each image sequence should be in a separate folder and should be imported as an image sequence. The frame rate of the imported image sequences is set in Preferences before an image sequence is imported or changed with File>Interpret Footage.
If your placeholder is a still image and you have an image sequence in a different folder you can use the Replace Footage command and it will bring replace a still with an image sequence if you make sure to check the image sequence button before you press Open.
You can also convert your image sequences to Movies using QuickTime and easily wrap them in a .mov container. This eliminates the necessity of checking the image sequence box when replacing footage.
Writing a script to do this would require that you either pause the script to choose the folder with the image sequence or that you script every folder and the placeholder so it would be easier just to go through the composition and replace footage.

• Movie clip resize not working when image is loaded

Hello,
I'm having some strange luck in building an image slide
show. I load the image paths into an array from an XML
page and then step through the array elements w/ forward and
back buttons.
I have an empty image clip on the stage where I create an
empty movie clip inside each time a new image is loaded. I load the
image into the second movie clip like this:
_root.picsPage_mc.mc_pic_loader.mc_individual_pic_loader.unloadMovie();
_root.picsPage_mc.mc_pic_loader.createEmptyMovieClip(
'mc_individual_pic_loader', 1 );
_root.load_movie_and_stop(
_root.picsPage_mc.mc_pic_loader.mc_individual_pic_loader,
_root.photo_array[_root.photo_index].image,
_root.picsPage_mc.mc_pbar, 'regular_load');
The load_movie_and_stop function is as follows:
function load_movie_and_stop( target_mc:MovieClip,
movie_clip_to_load:String, p_bar:MovieClip, action:String )
mc_loader._width = 0;
mc_slider_bar.mc_drag_pan._x = 0;
if( action != 'simple_load' )
p_bar._visible = true;
p_bar.bar._width = 0;
var mclListener:Object = new Object();
mclListener.onLoadStart = function( target_mc )
if( action != 'simple_load' && action !=
'regular_load' ){ target_mc.stop(); }
if( action == 'load_and_play' ){ target_mc.play(); }
mclListener.onLoadInit = function( target_mc )
_root.resize_movie_clip(target_mc, 160, 120, 250, 190);
if( action == 'load_and_stop' ){ target_mc.stop(); }
mclListener.onLoadProgress = function( target_mc )
if( action != 'simple_load' )
percentLoaded = Math.floor( (
target_mc.getBytesLoaded()/target_mc.getBytesTotal() )*100);
p_bar.bar._xscale = percentLoaded;
p_bar.txt_percent = percentLoaded + "% loaded.";
mclListener.onLoadComplete = function( target_mc ){
p_bar._visible = false; }
var my_mcl:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
my_mcl.addListener(mclListener);
my_mcl.loadClip( movie_clip_to_load, target_mc );
}//___endFunc___
After the image is loaded into the movie clip, I then resize
the image to be a specific width.
The image resizing is done w/ this function:
function resize_movie_clip(clip_loader_name:MovieClip,
max_width:Number, max_height:Number )
orig_width = clip_loader_name._width;
orig_height = clip_loader_name._height;
aspect_ratio = orig_width / orig_height;
if( (orig_width > max_width) || ( orig_height >
max_height ) ) // If either dimension is too big...
if( orig_width > orig_height ) // For wide images...
new_width = max_height;
new_height = new_width / aspect_ratio;
else if( orig_width < orig_height )
new_height = max_height;
new_width = new_height * aspect_ratio;
else if( orig_width == test_height )
new_width = max_width;
new_height = max_width;
else { trace( "Error reading image size."); return false; }
else { new_width = orig_width; new_height = orig_height; }
clip_loader_name._width = Math.round(new_width);
clip_loader_name._height = Math.round(new_height);
Now, 98% of the time this works perfectly, but there is some
certain times where the image resizing is completely ignored and
the image gets loaded as it's normal size.
Can anyone see why the image sizing get's ignored in some
instance?
Thanks for any help,
Clem

Found the solution that worked (used ._xscale and ._yscale
instead of ._width and ._height
function resize_movie_clip(clip_loader_name:MovieClip,
max_width:Number, max_height:Number, center_offset:Number )
if( (clip_loader_name._width > max_width) || (
clip_loader_name._height > max_height ) ) // If either dimension
is too big...
if( clip_loader_name._width > max_width )
_root.picsPage_mc.txt_test = "func if 1";
clip_loader_name._width = max_width;
clip_loader_name._yscale = clip_loader_name._xscale;
if( clip_loader_name._height > max_height )
_root.picsPage_mc.txt_test = "func if 2";
clip_loader_name._height = max_height;
clip_loader_name._xscale = clip_loader_name._yscale;
else { new_width = orig_width; new_height = orig_height; }
• Jumpy playback from image sequences rendered in Apple Prores and then exported to h264

I will start by saying I have been using FCP since 1.0 and am in no way new to this software, but this issue has me going crazy.
First the Specs:
MacPro 2 x 2.66 Quad cor Intel Xeon
16 gig Ram
OS 10.9.2
FCP 7.0.3 (sorry but I am not a fan of FCP10 at all)
In other words, a beast of a system that has played back everything I have ever built on it for years until now. So now for the issue: I work with an amazing 3D Max builder and we have created a building animation exported from that program into and image sequence ( we have tried JPG, TGA and PNG still all with the same effect). I open Quicktime 7 Pro, build the image sequence, save as .mov, import into FCP and drop it into my 1080p30 Apple Prores (HQ ... we also tried SQ) timelines. The timeline renders perfectly and I can play the video perfectly through my system out of Firewire 800 to my Motu V4HD device which then converts the signal to HDMI to my 55" LED TV. The video and playback is perfect.... until:
If I try to play back the same exact time line into an exported video file, the file will play back with random jumpyness in it. I say random since you can play it back 10 times and it will hiccup during playback at different spots in the video. If you review every frame in the file though using Quicktime 10, 7 or VLC viewer, every frame is perfect. So, it must be the data rate right? Wrong. I have exported now to H264 MP4, M4V, MOV , ect, etc at different data rates from 4mb to 40 mb per second. They all have the same randow jumpyness to it. So it must be my computer right? Nope. I have a Macbook pro that is more powerful than this machine and I rebuild the file using the same method (something I have done a thousand times before) and the exported file does the same thing on that machine. I had my friend do it on his machine... same thing. ERRRR....
We have even tried using After Effects and Premier to the same result. Rendered it straight from Quicktime Pro, same. Rendered it to 720p30, same. Render it to 24fps, same. I had another editor render it using whatever methods he wanted to use... same. Tried Compressor, SAME.  Tried Adobe Media Encoder, SAME......We even, god forbid, used a PC running Premier and built the image sequence and rendered to h264 at 30fps, 5mbs.... @#$@#$ SAME!
We just remade the 3D Studio Max export into a 60fps animation since I thought that the individual frames we appearing too far apart and thus causing the jumpyness. That was causing the playback of the upclose objects flying across the screen fast to appear jittery, but not the random playback jumps. The 60fps did smooth out the animation greatly during fast flybys, but the playback jumps are still there in all players, QT, VLC, the web, etc.
I was starting to think this issue is realted to Mavericks, but since the PC did the same thing that is not it either. I have linked a sample of the clip below exported to 720p30, 25mbs... something that is much smaller than the original and should playback smooth very easily on any of my systems.
FYI: I have now opened numerous projects I have edited over the last few years and noticed that all of them are now jumpy, so this isn't just an image sequence issue. While the other projects don't use image sequences and instead are shot footage edited together, there is still the random jump (far less than the image sequence as you will see) but they are now there... ***? I have cleared preferences in FCP which helps for a short period of time, but once exported I get the same glitch.
As I said... I am stumped... ANYONE have ideas for me to try?
Here is a sample file for you all to see and please tell me if anyone does not see the issue after playing it several times in a row.
www.media3lv.com/switch/NORTH-sample-720p30_25mb-sec.zip
One last thing to note... my main goal for these videos is YouTube or Vimeo playback via our company website. I have a few other animations online right now using YouTube and the problem is also showing there. At first I thought it was just my videos, but I have looked at numerous YouTube videos now showing 3D animation and alot of them are jumpy.
www.supernap.com/supernap-building-design.html
www.supernap.com/supernap-tscif-exchange.html
These don't show the issue as bad since the camera fly is much slower, but why is this occuring and is it coming from my source, or is this a known youtube issue? I can program this using out own modules, but YouTube and Vimeo allow for multiple resolutions and a checker script which makes it easier to share over all devices at all quality up to 1080p.
Advice is welcome and appreciated?

I have tried at actual, full screen, using 1080p30 size from the original compressed to 4mbs (something my system can handle without blinking), 720p30, etc. etc. etc.  Nothing stops the jumps. Even the activity monitor shows only 5%-15% processing being used by QT and/or FCP.
I plan to pull my old G5 out of the closet, it runs 10.6.8 and is still rock solid for video editing in FCP7.  If it plays smooth on that 8 year old system then I know it's Mavericks. I'll try that tonight. It floors me though why the original 1080p30 will playback perfect via FCP and Motu, but once I turn of external monitoring and just try to play it via the preview monitor it is jumpy as **** and then the exported file does the same thing.  So strange.  I even deleted prefences of FCP and that does help with screen playback initially, but it always gets jumps in it after playing for a while.
I knew I should not have started using Mavericks and I HATE FCP10.
