Converting cmyk PDF to greyscale. Lines are being altered!!

I have a big catalog, done in InDesign as a CMYK doc...exported to a Press Quality PDF.  Printing it in black only, so I need to convert the doc to greyscale.  I've googled for days, tried everything.  It converts the doc to greyscale, but it's screwing around with the line weights of any lines I have on the page.   I have a 10 point horizontal line at the top and bottom, and the converted greyscale now has a 1 point line!  Or I have an Illustrator logo with a 10 point white line around the logo, and the converted document has it down to a .5pt line!  It's insane. Everything else seems to be okay.  Some of the logos, which are actually already greyscale/black logos, disappear mostly, leaving just a few elements on the page. It's nuts.  Last year, I did this exact same thing to the exact same files, and it worked 100% fine.  Now, with new versions of ID, Acrobat, it's completely broken.
I'm at wits end.  It's 508 pages, and I can not fathom how long it will take me to manually convert the thousands of photos in this thing to greyscale manually. It has to go to press.
I tried converting the master PDF using the Mac Preview app, via the Export > Quartz Filter > Greyscale.   It worked correctly, except the prepress guy says all the black text is now 4-C text, so it's useless.
I've tried using Convert Colors under Tools, I tried going through Prepress tools and doing it there, and it's always the same.
Any thoughts here?

I exported as a gamma 2.0 directly out of InDesign, and the lines stayed intact.   I didn't know you could export as a gs, I was told that you had to export a color pdf, then use PDF tools to convert the colors...but if you mess with the Output settings in Indesign PDF export dialog box, you can get to the gamma 1.8, 2.2, or dotgain greyscale presets, and the PDF came out perfect.

  • When I convert my PDFs into docs they are unreadable, formatting is messed up

When I convert my PDFx into docs they are unreadable and formatting is messed up.
Why pay $22 for a product that does not work?
Can this situation be remedied; how can I make it work?

The only thing that comes close is ExportPDF at $19.99 (with tax that could be about right) but it's an online subscription.
If that turns out to be what you have you'll want to take this to the ExportPDF forum rather than here.
    It's at http://forums.adobe.com/community/exportpdf
    Good luck.

  • Acrobat 9 - Converting to PDF creates shortened lines - Bug??

I've just converted from Acrobat 8 to Acrobat 9 as part of the Creative Design Suite and now running on Windows7.
In the past I have found it extremelly convenient to print various documents (eg Hotmail - emails or printouts of a web page) to PDF files.  In Acrobat 8 I had no problem when
selecting Print - to PDF to create a PDF document, which I can then file.  However, with Acrobat 9 it seems that all the PDF files I create in this way have  2 unexpected and undesirable things in common:
    1) all documents are displayed with huge scale factors (ie 785% or 1000%).
    2) all the lines in the document are foreshortened so that only a small piece of a few characters (typically unreadable) appears in the PDF (regardless of what you then change the scale factor to) and as a result creates lengthy documents of many pages, even though the original document may have been only a single page.  Interestingly, only the thing readable seems to be a file header showing the URL of the page printed.
Is there a setting that I must make in setting up Acrobat 9 so that I get an accurate recreation of the original document rather than a long thin vertical string of documents many pages long that are totally unusuable or is this a bug in Acrobat 9 running on Windows7.
Obviously, any help in this regard would be appreciated as Acrobat 9 is currently unusable.

Try checking your Firefox page setup (File > Page Setup) . I use Firefox and did a test print of this thread to pdf with no problems. I am using Firefox 3.5.2 and Acrobat Pro 9.2.
I like to save web pages electronically for reference, too. PDF files are handy, but you might also consider a Firefox add-on called ScrapBook. I have found it very useful. The files are stored as html.
This thread was odd. As soon as I sent in the above response, the question was marked as answered although it was highly improbable that my response was read within seconds!

  • How can I convert CMYK PDF file to Spot Color from a standard Spot Library?

    Hi,
I have PDF file that is in CMYK colors. Can I use Adobe Pro X to convert the document to Spot Color from a established spot library like the PANTONE PC? Is there a plugin to do it?
    Amit.

In method HMAC, you have towards the bottom
    catch(Exception e) {}please change this to
    catch(Exception e)
                e.printStackTrace();
}Note that using the sun.* classes, including the sun.misc.BASE64Encoder class, requires elevated privileges (see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=483223&messageID=2255882).
It is not difficult to write your own encoder/decoder class, or borrow one from someone else. Just google on "java base64 encoder".

  • Converting CMYK PDF in InDesign to only hold 2 PMS / Black.

I've been given a PDF file to place in InDesign that has bleeds and needs to carry only three colors. PMS 185c, PMS 300c, and Black.
However the original PDF file the client sent has a logo on the cover and back cover that holds CMYK and a third PMS color. It's a pink PMS color (that I've been able to remove from the swatch panel), however when told to replace the color with PMS185, it still remains pink.
I've pulled the PDF file into Photoshop to fill the logo with the correct PMS 185 c red, however Photoshop auto converts the entire file into CMYK.
Is there a way to export the InDesign document as a PDF to only carry the three colors (replacing any left over colors / CMYK to just the two Pantones and Black)?
I've tried pulling the document into Illustrator as well, but it would require me to trace and redesign the logo in order to set it to PMS 185 c.
I just need a quick way to format all the colors to just Black for text, then PMS 185c and PMS 300c for the remaining images.

I've pulled the PDF file into Photoshop to fill the logo with the correct PMS 185 c red, however Photoshop auto converts the entire file into CMYK.
You need to create a spot channel in Photoshop for the red in the logo. It would look something like this where the image is only on the Black and 185 channel:
And not this which is probably what you have:
When you place the PSD with the spot channel in ID it will separate correctly like this:

  • Past events are being altered automatically

For some reason my calendar has started to delete the contents of some past events.  All events are in one iCloud calendar.  I can't work out whether they were created on the iPad, iPhone or iMac in terms of synching. I need these to research comments made at the time in the notes fields and it's deleting the entire contents other than times and dates and comes up as "new event".  Does anyone know why this is happening or how I can find out which device has the problem?

You have this - go to settings > mail, contacts, and calendars > scroll down to 'calendars' section > where it says 'sync' it probably says 'events 1 month back'
select that bar, then change how far back you sync calendar data. It's not deleting your info, it's just not syncing it to your phone

what settings are used to convert to pdf?

  • PDF - Thin White Lines Present

    Hi there,
When I "print" as a PDF file from my .ai file, thin white lines appear in the PDF where frame edges would normally be invisible.
Is there a way to create the PDF without this happening? And, why is this happening?
If this has something to do with not flattening my artwork before I create a PDF, then how do I do that?
    Thank you!
    Nicki

You are giving him a PDF file.
The problem is that he is literally ruining the content of the file by converting the PDF file to a raster image in Photoshop and then printing that, in other words it looks like your printer is using Photoshop as a “poor man's RIP!” The transparency effects in your PDF/X-4 file are being flattened at whatever resolution your printer sets the Photoshop image to be. In fact, transparency blending should be performed at the printer's RIP where such flattening artifacts that you are seeing are avoided.
You say you don't have your choice of printer?
Would you say you don't have your choice of physician if a doctor told you he was going to do an appendectomy by operating through your nose? Would you claim you don't have your choice of physician?
Professional incompetence is professional incompetence. If you have a “printer” who is really printing PDF files by opening them in Photoshop and printing directly from Photoshop to the device somehow, you are dealing with demonstrable incompetence!
The advice to find another printer is the best advice that we (including Adobe) can provide to you!

  • 3D Rendering - The lines are too light

I've just reinstalled Acrobat 7.0 Standard onto this computer and now whenever I convert a 3D rendering into a pdf the drawings lines are so faint they are barely visible. The border and the text are fine, just the rendering itself is messed up. I know there is a setting somewhere to fix this but I just can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Under the printer properties of the Adobe PDF printer, select the layout tab, Advanced options. Change the print quality to 300 or 600 dpi, not the default 1200.

  • OM: Sales order lines are cancelled automatically without backordering.

Intercompany sales orders lines are being cancelled automatically on the delivery when a split line is shipped with a quantity of one remaining. This line should remain backordered. A quantity of 61 was entered and 60 was shipped and 1 remaining. This 1 should have been backordered but no new line was automatically generated and infact when I view the Additional information I can see that the quantity 1 is cancelled. The profile option OM: Under Shipment Tolerance is set to .5

    HI,
You can cross check by running the AUDIT HISTORY REPORT in Order Management, which gives the in depth details of the sales order amendments.
