Converting larger documents

I have downloaded Adobe ExportPDF and it seems to work when I try it on a single page. Then when I try to convert a 9 page document to Word in will not complete the upload, even after an hour or more. DHow do I get it to work on multi-page documents?

Hi William,
How are you trying to submit files to the service? Are you using Reader or the ExportPDF website (http://exportpdf.acrobat.com) ?

What kind of software do you use for the conversion to pdf? Adobe Reader can't create pdf files.

  • Problem converting XPS document with large images

    Hi,
When I try to convert XPS documents to PDF in Acrobat 9.0 Pro, I have problems with "large images". They are either truncated or scaled down. The only images that convert correctly are small images that are not stretched to fill a large area. Attached to this message is a simple example. Does anyone know a way to correct this problem? By the way, the page is slightly larger than the standard Letter size.
    Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestion! In fact, I am the programmer who creates the XPS files from a .NET document. Our company used the method "Postscript + PDF" during a few months and it worked quite well. Recently, we introduced semi-transparent objects and fonts in our documents and the resulting PS prints look really bad. Since I can create a perfect XPS document, and since Acrobat can convert it to PDF, I gave it a try. It solved all the problems that I had with PS printing but there is that thing with images... Anyway, since Acrobat converts XPS to PDF, I guess they should try to solve the bug with the images. As for me, I will see if I can get a component to create PDF documents directly from our application.

  • How to convert a large document into a InDesign Book w/Chapters?

    Hello!
I just started a position with a company that has a number of catalogs full of the widgets they sell. Previously the catalog work was outsourced to a company that uses Quark, and the first thing I did when I started was to convert them to InDesign using a 3rd party plugin.
The one I'm working on now is 400+ pages, including a TOC and 2 indexes (words / item nos.), and is currently 4 VERY large files that take 5-10 minutes each to open.
What I'd like to do is split the entire catalog along logical lines into a bunch of 10-50 page documents, then stitch them all back together as Chapters in a Book file. The plan is to have the smaller documents be usable either as stand-alone brochures or as pieces of the big catalog. Once I can get it all organized the way I want, I'll be redoing the TOC and indexes as well.
So, to boil it down to a few questions:
    1. How do I split a large document into smaller pieces?
    2. I have a basic understanding of creating a Book file, but are there any pitfalls I should watch out for when stitching the bits back together?
    3. Is it possible to have page numbering automated so that if I open a chapter on its own the pages will be, say, 1-20; but if I open it in the context of the book file the pages will be, say, 84-104?
    4. Are the page numbering, TOC, and indexing tools flexible enough to where if I modify a section such that it adds or removes pages in that section, the entire book file will restructure to accommodate?
A thousand thanks in advance to all who read this, and to any who respond!

Saving x-number of copies as new names, then chop off the unwanted parts is pretty efficient.
    2. I have a basic understanding of creating a Book file, but are there any pitfalls I should watch out for when stitching the bits back together?
Nothing specific, other than learning the ins and outs of working with book files. For example, if you change a style in one file, you'd want to use the Synchronize feature to propagate the change to the other files, but you'd also need to remember if any change in one file shouldn't be propagated to others, and deselect it in the Synchronize dialog box.
It's a good idea to open all and save all book files before doing any book-wide operation; even better to save the whole directory for safety. Working on open  files gives you some undo powers that working with closed files doesn't.
    3. Is it possible to have page numbering automated so that if I open a chapter on its own the pages will be, say, 1-20; but if I open it in the context of the book file the pages will be, say, 84-104?
The individual files need to be checked and perhaps updated or have their numbering restarted when they're removed from the book file's control. It depends on how you've set up the numbering.

Both TOC and Index have check boxes to include all files in the current book. You need to update the TOC, and generate the index again with Replace Existing Index checked, after making changes.

  • Converting page document to .doc

I have converted 2 large documents to 'Word'; one is in Latin and the other in English. I have put a page break between each page to preserve the compatibility of the pagination. But when I save the 'Page' version as a 'Word' document, an extra line always appears at the beginning of every page which follows a page break. This distorts the pagination so that I have more English pages than Latin pages. Can anyone help , please?
    Jack Heery

    Thanks, Peter
I did re-edit the Word version previously which was when I discovered that the same thing occurred after the re-editing was complete and I tried to save it as Word! I've also tried leaving a spare blank line after the page break but it still creates another blank line at the top of the next page. And the extra blank line comes up if I start each next page with another blank line. I need to send this document to colleagues who use Microsoft and sending them a pdf is no good because they then can't edit it.
Presumably I wouldn't have a problem if I were to buy the full Microsoft programme, but I don't want to pay out another £100 if I can find a way of sending my Pages documents to my Microsoft friends using the'Save as Word' facility in Pages.
Thanks anyway. Anyone else got any other ideas?

  • Converting large complex unstructured set to structured.

I am converting a large complex unstructured doc set to Structured Frame. I'm starting off with Tom Aldous' webinars. I have many questions. First, I am performing my conversion to DITA (because this is how the webinar guides us). Is this the best format to use? I will have PDF User Guide with multiple role based outputs and Robohelp Webhelp output. Am I better with a DITA or Custom Structure?
    I am using TCS 3.

    Amy,
I don't know what experience you have in working with XML, structured documents, EDDs, conversion tables, read/write rules, application definition files, and the other components of a FrameMaker structure application. You may not need them all. Especially if you are new to structure in general, I recommend that you don't try to learn everything at once. Start with something you do need--a structured template and an EDD and branch out to other components as you need them. It is always tempting to start by converting legacy documents. If your schedule permits, I recommend first setting up a structured template that you can use to experiment with structured documents. If you start with the conversion table, you may wind up with a structure that is optimized for adding structure to existing material rather than editing it once it's been structured.
As far as the question of whether to define your own structure or use an existing one, I do not agree with the logic that using an existing model (such as DITA) gets you started earlier and saves you analysis time. Structure is all about organizing content, that is, organizing ideas and your project will provide the most benefit if you take time for planning at the beginning. That analysis might take the form of designing your own structure; it may take the form of figuring out how the elements and attributes defined in an existing model map into your own content. Remember that the industry-standard models are designed to apply to the documentation needs at many companies. They often make great examples for preliminary study, but they tend to be huge and much more complex than you may need. If you decide to go that route, strongly consider using a subset or specialization of the original model.
Using a large tag set off the shelf is parallel to using a word processor without a style sheet. If the model was designed to let writers create almost anything, the model won't help writers create documents that conform to their own company's conventions. For example, one benefit of FrameMaker structured editing as compared to unstructured editing is that the context-sensitive available elements listed in the structured Element Catalog show only elements the writer is likely to need at the current point in the document. In contrast, the Paragraph and Character Catalogs show all defined catalog entries. Thus, if certain formats are only available within front matter or only for a title at the beginning of a larger unit, the format catalogs still show them everywhere. Suppose you start with a model that allows dozens of inline elements within a paragraph (emphasis, foreign phrase, part number, keyword, quotation, and so forth). If writers at your organization never use more than five of the inline elements, set up your application so that those five are the only ones listed.
One of DITA's original design goals was to reduce the overhead that large companies like IBM required to publish documentation from new partners. The only way that goal could be achieved was with permissive rules for what's allowed where. Yes, DITA can be customized to support more stringent rules. Learning how to do so is part of the cost of using DITA. That expense may be worth it, but recognize it is there.
The dividing line between a custom structure and a customization of one that is widely available may be blurry. My mother once had a cookbook with a recipe that concluded something like "bake for 20 minutes, or more, or less, it all depends." Designing a structured environment is similar. It all depends.

  • Problems with larger documents.

Here's my problem: I am a composer, I need to print my scores (document size is 9x12) but it seems that adobe only supports 8.5x11. What I'm looking to do is to save my 9x12 document as a pdf, and have it actually show up in adobe reader as a 9x12 document so that it can be accurately printed at its intended size. Every time I try to do just that, the document either rescales to accomodate to adobe, or parts of the document get cut off. That's not what I want, I want a 9x12 document. If in the unfortunate case that what I'm trying to do is impossible, please notify me of an alternate universal document reader that will do what I want.

I set up the score for my music in my notation software (finale 2011.) I must then convert the score from finale into a PDF, as there are additional items that I need to add to the score that can't be added from finale. So I export the document from finale as a 9x12 file. I use one of those PDF creators that acts as a printer since Finale 2011 for windows doesn't have direct pdf conversion capabilities. Once the PDF is created, I open it only to see that my large document has been subject to the 8.5x11 parameters of Adobe Acrobat, and much of it has been cropped out. I don't want to rescale, because again, it is a 9x12 document and that is all it will ever be. Is there a better alternative to this process that might yeild the desired outcome?

After I do this, the "Convert To" box goes "gray" and I am unable to convert the document I have selected.  It was working great for the first week that I used it, but now it doesn't give me the converting option.  I am very frustrated as I have done nothing to change anything, and I was thinking this was so great...now I am just pulling out my hair and do not have the option of calling anyone since no phone numbers are listed. I am VERY busy and do not have time to sit and wait over a half an hour to "chat", which I tried to do yesterday.  All I want to do is very simply, convert pdfs to Word.  I have paid for this and am not getting any help. I am not very savvy when it comes to Adobe this program and Adobe that program...I feel I am being scammed as I do not get simple answers for something that appeared was going to be simple. You can't even call customer service to talk to someone live to help walk you through.

    Hello Kathie,
Sorry for the inconvenience that has caused to you.
Please let me know if you have tried converting any other PDF to word with Reader.
Alos, please sign up at "https://cloud.acrobat.com/" using your Adobe ID credentials. Click on 'ExportPDF' tab and upload the PDF that you want to convert to Word.
Let me know if this converts fine.
    Hope to hear from you.

  • How do I increase the font size of a large document?

Whenever I try to increase the font size of a large document, the text boxes cross their boundaries and mix with each other, or partly disappear at the end of every page. Do I really have to adjunst every text bos in the document or is there a faster way? Im having this issue with adobe acrobat 11 pro

This is not a feasible thing to do. Editing a PDF is a desperate last resort for so many reasons.
Whatever you need to solve, you are unlikely  to solve it in Acrobat. Probably best to export text and remake it.

  • Can't print large documents.

For years, we've been printing large documents to our plotter without issue.  Suddenly last week, nothing large will print.
I've seen a few different error messages, and have tried different computers, and different versions of Illustrator, but nothing large will print.
When trying to print, I currently get the following:
I've also seen an error suggesting not enough memory is available, which is bogus.  And I think another error that was more vague, something to the effect of "can't print"
I've setup a clean install of illustrator on a clean windows install, same issue.
I setup an alternate print server with our rip software, same software we've been using for years.  Same error on the alternate server.
Nothing changed, and it's effecting everything here, and new installs.  I don't know what happened, but this is getting critical, we need the ability to print.

    EFI eXpress v. 4.1
This all worked fine until a week ago, so I don't think there should be a hardware software compatibility issue.  The software and hardware were all working fine, and then we got blindsided by this stubborn error that came out of nowhere, won't go away, and has no error or log that gives us any useful information.
It isn't a font issue.  I've created a basic test document that just consists of the word test.  Using this same font, I've had success printing documents that are 37"x79", 39"x75".  But, when I print 39"x79", it fails.  i've not zeroed in on the size that seems to be the cutoff, but I knew that a 37x75 worked, and 40x80 didn't, and 39x79 didn't either.  So, playing around with the numbers I found the above that did work.
Also, using the general epson driver that you can get on epson's site, any print job can be sent without issue.  It's just that anything beyond 90 inches gets cut off.
I suppose this suggests the problem lies with EFI.  But, a clean install of EFI didn't resolve the issue.  What it comes down to for me is, the error is generated from Adobe.  So, at the least, I'd like an explanation from Adobe as to what the error is, since their software is generating it, and giving me no reason why it failed.  Plus, there's no way I can justify to management the cost of bringing in a 3rd party support for the EFI software, unless I have a better reason why the EFI software worked last week, but not this week, so I really need better data out of Adobe as to why it fails.
I currently have a paid case open with Adobe, but they seem to be having difficulty as well, so far it's been a lot of time on hold, and a little bit of "try this, try that, try this", which is getting nowhere.  I need something more methodical to happen, and some actual following of data, or checking of logs, to get some detailed information, hopefully the case will get escalated to someone with a bit more in depth knowledge on these things.
I will keep posting the details here as they emerge, because there's nothing I hate more than a forum thread with a problem I'm experiencing, that doesn't end with an answer.  I think forums should do a better job of either posting a resolution, or purging the cases that don't resolve, to get rid of the useless junk that clogs the internet and wastes people's time searching for answers.

  • Links in each page of a large document

I have a 350+ pages PDF document and would like to add a link to the TOC in each page. Obviously not one by one because this would take a lot of work/time.
I thought to use a general header or footer with the linked text. But I don't know how to put linked text in a header/footer. Can this be done?
Is there any other way you know to easily add a link to all pages of a large document?

Another way is to put your link in a button: buttons can be duplicated to all (or a range) of pages. If you don't like a button that 'looks like a button' just use 'no border, no fill', or even an icon to customise it.
