Corrupt dmg files

I'm having an issue that seems to come up before with others. Every DMG file I have tried downloading is corrupt and is giving me invalid checksum etc..
This isn't limited to one specific machine as I have an iMac and 2 macbooks all try and make the same download on the same network and all 3 are getting the same issues. i've rebooted the modem / router and nothing!
This is really frustrating as I can't get photoshop to work without installing java and even that 60meg download is getting corrupt.
Routerwise i have a netgear WGR614v9 (seems like a piece of crap) and can't get the firmware to update.
This is really frustrating as i need to work from home but can't even install the software i need to use.
Anyone figure out anything?

Add me to the list.  Running Mountain Lion on my MBP and Lion on my Mac Mini. The MBP is connecting to the Internet via wireless and the mac mini is wired. Tried rebooting the cable modem and switch to see if that made a difference but it didn't. I cannot understand why unless there's been an update to lion which prevents dmg files from opening a.k.a. The bzip issue that affected osx 10.3 and earlier.
All other file types are fine, it just seems to be affecting dmg files. Also, if it was corruption over the wire then surely web sites wouldn't load properly.
Confused!

  • Anyone know how to repair a corrupted .DMG file? I recovered the file using Disk Drill. There are actually 4-6 files I have encrypted into a DMG - now they are back on my desktop (deleted them months ago) and the size is correct (between 500-900 MB each)

I deleted several .mov files a while back that were encrypted into a .dmg file. Using Disk Drill, I was able to recover 5 of these files, roughly 500-900 MB each and successfully moved them to my desktop. When I try to open the .dmg file, the dreaded error message "no mountable file systems" shows up. I have tried various fixes based on searches and none have worked. Are these files just corrupted and unreadable, or is there a way to fix?

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.

  • Corrupt DMG file - "No Mountable File Systems"

Hello, I have an important backup DMG file that I can't mount. When I try, I get this error..."No Mountable File Systems".
I have tried the following with no success...
    - repairing the DMG in Disk Utility.
    - converting the DMG in Disk Utility to a R/W image.
    - Repair in Data Rescue 3
    - Repair in Disk Warrior
    - Repair in File Salvage (this actually recovered a single mp3 file, so this makes me think the data is still there)
    - Repair in Stellar Phoenix
    - Repair in Disk Drill
I have read on one of these forums (I can't seem to find it anymore) that someone had a similar issue and someone helped them through a lot of digging around in the broken file (something to do with headers?)...and in the end they managed to repair the broken DMG file. I would really like to repair this file, so just in case someone who knows how to fix this sort of thing, I've shared the file here...
    files.me.com/jeffvandyck/x4qv9c
I have a few other files like this and would really like to recover those as well. I'm relatively technical, and once I understand what I'm looking for I can try to fix the others.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • Recovering corrupt dmg file

I made an image (dmg file) of my computer as a backup and now I need to recover that file. When I try to open it I get "no mountable file systems". Is there a utility that will let me open this file so I can access the data?

Hello! You're unlikely to recover a bad disk image. About the only thing to try is to open disk utility and drag the icon to the upper left pane when your hard drives are listed and see if you can run a "repair disk" function on it. Did you create the image of the disk using disk utility with the intent of restoring a drive? Tom

  • Why does the .dmg file for newest version always download as corrupted?

When I try to download the newest version of Firefox I do not get the window where you are to drag the Firefox icon into the applications folder. When I try to manually open the dmg file I get a dialog box saying the image is corrupted.

What version of OS X are you using?
If you have OS X 10.3.9 or earlier, the last version of Firefox that works is Firefox 2.0.0.20, if you try to install a more recent version you get the message about a corrupt download.

  • DMG files will not open.  Possibly corrupt installer app?

I just tried to uninstall Safari 3 Beta and return to the previous version of Safari 2.0. The uninstallation stopped prematurely and told me to try the uninstallation again. I tried, but the dmg file would not load. I rebooted my machine, and it still will not work. Not only will the safari uninstall dmg not work, no other dmg will work either. It seems as though my "installer" app is corrupt or something. I tried downloading other apps that require the installer program, but none of them will install.

    Hi
Try this navigate to the following location System/Library/Cache/com.apple.kernalcaches inside the com.apple.kernalcaches Delete all files inside (do not empty the trash at this time)
Next navigate back to System/Library and in the Library you will find Extensions.kextcache file delete this file (do not empty the trash yet)
Now reboot your mac and test to see if the installer works if the installer works you can empty the trash as your mac on the reboot generated a new kernal cache ( if this solved the problem it was a corrupt kernal cache )
I had this situation not to long ago and the above solved the problem
Btw To delete the kernel cache files you will need the admin. password and be very carefull to delete the above files only if the above procedure did not work you can take the deleted cache files out of the trash and put it back where you got them ( replace the new cache files with the cache files you had in the trash )
    Hope This Helps

  • .DMG File Corruption

    Hi
I was recently importing some video from an SD Card that I had backed up as Disk Imagea (.DMG file).  I had 4 .DMG files mounted when I was importing into Final Cut Pro and the drive went offline unexpectedly.  I was able to use Data Rescue 3 to get back the hundred or so other .DMG files I had on that hard drive but the 4 that were mounted, Data Rescue cannot see and neither can my computer.   I figure they got corrupted because they were mounted when the drive went down.  Does anybody have any suggestions on how I could recover these corrupt files and their contents?  They have wedding footage on them that is very important.  Thanks in advance.

Ouch, doesn't sound good at all!
You must repair the HD,  if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

    But others that may work…

  • I can no longer make dmg files in disk utility since upgrading to Mountain Lion

    Hi everyone,
I'm a videographer, and have been using the facility in disk utility to make dmg backups of my media cards. It's proved to be a neat and tidy way of doing things, and is my equivalent to storing videotapes.
However, I no longer can make them.
    My technique has been to:
    1. select the memory card in disk utility
    2. press new image
    3. browse to destination for the dmg/hit save
    4. sit back and wait for the process to complete.
this has been working for me in Snow Leopard, but not in mountain lion. I can't identify any other variables that have changed except the OS upgrade.
    Firstly 'Authopen' prompts me for username/password. After username/password it starts creating the image, but stops with an error;
"Unable to create "SD-Card.dmg." (Device not configured).
    The card is sitting in a media card reader. I tried another card reader that resulted in;
Unable to create "SD-Card.dmg." (Input/output error)
Anyone experienced this, or any ideas on what to try? As the card readers both work insofar as they show the memory cards in the finder etc, could there be a disk-utility-specific problem with them? Or do I need to change my procedure? I can copy the files to the hard drive and make a dmg from a folder, but I'd rather not have to do that.
    thanks.
    Andrew

Maybe just corrupted Disk Utility preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DiskUtility.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try creating a .dmg file.

  • FYI OS 10.4.9 can't read dmg files on an external hard drive

After I upgraded from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, my G5 iMac would no longer read digital image files (dmg) stored earlier on my external hard drive. I tried various fixes from the Discussions topics. But the files would not read, giving me a: "Finder cannot complete the operation "file name XXX" ..... could not be read or written (Error code -36)".
I don't have a "fix" but I do have an inelegant solution to retrieving the files.
I plugged the hard drive into a windows XP computer (laptop) and transfered the files to a USB media reader (SD/memory stick type). The windows machine had no problem retrieving the dmg files. I then plugged the memory stick into my iMac and the iMac read the dmg files just fine.
The files are not corrupted and the disk drive obviously works, so I wonder what was different in 10.4.9 that made it quit reading the external hard drive, while still reading memory stick devices? Maybe 10.4.10 will resolve the issue.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Have u tried the usual? Safe boot. Delete finder plist files? etc. And the drives are formatted for mac yes?

  • When trying to update, the .dmg file for mac indicates "Coruppt Image". I'm running FF 1.0.1 on a mac with 10.3.9.

Trying to update to a newer version of FF, not the lastest version. I'm using a Mac with 10.3.9. When opening up the .dmg file the error is "the followinmg disk images failed to mount" Reason - "corrupt image". Need to update because I can't get to my e-mail with this browser.
    Thanks in advance

    3. Well, there are two aspects: corruption of the hard drive; or corruption of the .dmg file. For the latter you may try re-downloading the file. For the former you need to try repairing the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    2. To reinstall Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
On your computer Lion reinstalls via Internet Recovery, so be sure your internet connection is functioning.

  • While downloading Acrobat XI, download assistant leaves a folder in my downloads with an invalid .dmg file (illegal seek when you try to open it in Mac OSX 10.9)

This "go get community help" because we won't let you email us or chat after 7-7 is the most useless, frustrating and time-wasting process I've yet found.

    Hi kmbishop,
What is the size of the downloaded dmg file?
It seems to me that the downloaded file might have been corrupted.
Please try downloading Acrobat 11 Pro from the direct download link available at: Download Acrobat products | Standard, Pro | XI, X

  • I can't open a silverlight dmg file-it always opens Terminal window

Hi,  I can't open a silverlight dmg file to watch netflix.  I am running Lion on my 2.66ghz iMac i5 with 10.7.3. I can download and install silverlight but when I try to open the file, it always opens the Terminal window.  Please Help.

It sounds like all your launch services file associations have somehow been corrupted.  I suggest your reset the launch services bake to their initial default settings.
The easiest way for you to do this is probably to get a maintenence utility like OnyX (download the Lion version for your case).  It has, among many other things, a way to rebuild the launch services.  Launch OnyX.  It will ask for your admin password and a window like below will be dispallyed.
As you can see from the above picture in OnyX you select Maintenance, Rebuild tab, check the LaunchServices checkbox, and click the Execute button (not shown here but it's at the bottom of the window).
Note, the above shows the window for the Snow Leopard version of OnyX.  I don't know if the Lion version is different since I don't use Lion.

  • Cannot mount a .dmg file

I just received a Slingbox Pro for the holidays. I downloaded their software, which is in the form of a dmg file. After the download it would not mount. The people at SlingBox are clueless. I'm waiting for a Mac specialist to call me back.
Any idea why it is not mounting? Just as a test I downloaded iTunes because it too is a dmg file and it mounted. They think it is some setting regarding a firewall or the like. Help...
    Scott

That means that perhaps the file you downloaded got a little messed up on its way to your computer, or perhaps the checksum information wasnt included in the original file. Disk images have checksums to ensure the integrity of the disk image is ok. It works by summing up the number of bits and bytes in the image/file according to a summation algorithm that will give you a specific "checksum" number. The file should contain the checksum number (created and embedded in the file when the original disk image was created) that your computer compares to it's checksum number that it gets when it runs the same algorithm upon mounting the disk image. If the image is intact, then the checksums will match, but if the original checksum is missing or they dont match, then the disk will be avoided for fear of corrupt data, etc.
I'd recommend re-downloading the file, but if you want to try one more thing with this one, open "Disk Utility" and in the preferences uncheck the "Verify checksum" option. Then go to the file menu and select the option to open a disk image and hope it mounts without checksum verification. If it's just a checksum error where the checksum number is missing, then the contents should be fine and you should be able to install the program, but if there's a problem with the disk image then its likely the installer files will be corrupted and you will get errors. Its worth a shot...

  • .dmg files and adobe

    Hi,
I have tried downloading a trial version of Adobe Photoshop from their website and it says that it's unable to open the .dmg file. I have already tried to make it open with the diskimagemounter and that doesn't work. Anything?
    Thanks

Try downloading it again. It also could be a corrupted file on their end.
