Could RAM be to blame?

Hi everyone,
I have recently upgrade a friend's 24" intel based iMac from 1GM RAM to 4 GB RAM from Kingston. She seems to be having some weird problems now.
At some point, the iMac said that it had no memory left anymore or space left to save her documents...but that is hard to believe since she has a HD of over 90 GB on the Mac side and over 90 GB of the Windows side (via Boot camp).
Microsoft office 2004 (Word and PowerPoint) also sarted to quit unexpectedly...!?! She claims to have lost some files due to the unexpected quitting of the software. Does anyone know how I could find answers to whom or what the culprit or problem could be?
She is not very cumputer savvy and I am simply trying to help her and to save the face of the Mac. She operates under 10.4.10 I believe which is the original OS that came with the 20" iMac at the time.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Rio.

Other things to do:
1. Open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select the hard drive on the left(the Mac OS X Volume) and click Repair Disk Permissions then Verify Disk. Repairing the Permissions is something that should be done as regular maintenance and Verifying the Disk checks the volume directory for errors. If it finds any problems you will need to boot up the the install disk and run Disk Utility from there in order to Repair it.
2. Run Apple Hardware Test. Insert the original gray iMac install disk, restart and hold down the "d" key until it boots up to the AHT. Run the Extended test as it will perform an extensive check on the RAM for errors.
3. Afterwards Go to the Apple Menu/System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that the Mac OS X volume is selected as the startup system.

  • New RAM made me lose my Bluetooth mouse

    Hey all,
I recently installed 2GB worth of G.Skill RAM into my blackbook. It was a great upgrade, but I've had really spotty use of my Bluetooth mouse as a result.
Sometimes it will not connect at all and other times it will work for a few minutes and cut off. I know I've heard a few things about this on this board but I couldn't find any relevant threads via the search feature.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

have you tried putting the old ram back in and seeing if the bluetooth works? this would at least verify that the ram is to blame and then you made be able to get it replaced by g.skill in warranty. I noticed my bluetooth went out more often after replacing my ram, but it wasn't a new problem. putting my old ram back in made no difference.

  • Photoshop CS4 Experience, Problems & Questions

    Hi all,
i just installed my Production Suite Premium on the following System (fresh install, clean System, no other versions of Photoshop):
    Intel E8500 Dualcore
    Nvidia Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver Version 178.24)
    3 GB RAM
    Windows XP Professionel SP3
Photoshop has its own Scratchdisk assigned with at least 50 GB free Space.
I know that the 9800 GX2 is considered to be a "Gaming-Card" but as a freelance artist i work for the game-industry on many occasions and I need a decent gaming hardware to test what I am working on. As far as I know, the card meets all requirements for CS4 and Nvidia tells me, that their GPU's are perfect for CS4. (wasn't a problem with any version before, I use Photoshop AND Nvidia-Cards since Photoshop 4)
Here are the things that bug me:
    - Photoshop disables the OpenGL Features on random occasions, stating, that it has encountered a problem. This happens either in Two GPU-Mode or One-GPU-Mode.
There's no obvious reason for any errormessage, because IF Open GL is activated it seems to work pretty good, zooming and rotating works quite well and fast. I noticed, that the problem happens either after saving my file or when i open photoshop.
    - Photoshop crashed on several occasions mostly concerning heavy transforming of multiple layers. It simply didn't respond anymore in the midst of the transormation-process.
My guess is, that this is also linked to the GPU/Driver. System-Memory is checked, GPU works like a charm in all other applications. CS3 has not once crashed in one year, so i guess it has to do with the changes made in CS4.
Strange thing is, that even with open GL deactivated, the above written problems occur. I would have thought, that with OpenGL dectivated, Photoshop would somehow become kind of CS3 again, but it seems, there had been to much changes to simply disconnect photoshop from it's new OpenGL interface.
Apart from these two Problems, Photoshop CS4 is doing ok. It feels kind of sluggish compared to older versions, but that might also change with some new drivers.
Sad thing is, that the rotate canvas feature and the extended moverange for images, the main reasons why i upgraded to CS4, are only working with
OpenGL activated. I really hope there will be a fix in the near future.
There are other questions concerning PS CS4's usability:
    - The Scale-Brush Feature uses alt + right mouse buttons, what seems kind of strange when using a stylus (Even more when using a stylus without buttons like the wacom layout-marker).
I would prefer another combination of keyboard shortcuts plus stylus movement ctrl + alt for example. so far i have not found a way to remap the keys. Am i missing something? Or is this impossible?
    - Is there a way to get window behavior back the way it was in CS3? The new way of handling windows is ok, but i liked the old one better. If i disable "floating windows docking" there's no way to maximize a window INSIDE the photoshop workspace. The maximize button on top of every window is right now completely useless because it maximizes the window AND gets rid of all the menus and palettes. I don't see why i want to do that.
That's it. I hope this is useful either for the guys at adobe or for other users. Every new Photoshop-Version has had its problems, i hope that these will just be dealt with like the ones before.
    All the best,
    Pickman

Photoshop CS4 does cause crashes. I can vouch for that too. When it happens, the first instinct is almost always to assume that something is wrong with the computer and start from there. Comments to this effect are prominent in many threads. It is also Adobe's prevalent approach. So people experiencing these problems will tend not to post on these forums. Statements like 'because there are only a few posts, a significant number of people are not experiencing [these] problems' are therefore unfounded. There simply has not been time yet for people to resolve potential hardware/system problems.
In my case, I started experiencing unexplained crashed with CS3 in July (see below) but it was only when Adobe admitted that they could be partly to blame that I posted my experiences (elsewhere) on this forum.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have installed Photoshop CS4 on a newly reformatted HDD containing a fresh clean installation of Windows XP/SP3, fully patched, with everything working hunky dory, and no legacy installations of Photoshop or other CS software to worry about. All the same PS CS4 keeps crashing. The symptoms are unexplained total freeze ups occurring at random. I may get several hours use, sometimes a lot less, before I am forced to reboot and start all over again. Certainly the ability to do any useful work is severely compromised, and yes, the first inclination is to blame the hardware or system installation.
The thing is I had been chasing a similar, probably related, problem with CS3 (possibly caused by cloning my system drive, see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6bd8d/ ) while Photoshop was still activated, so I have had several months head start over anyone who may now be experiencing similar problems with CS4. As a result, Dell, whose support has been great throughout, have replaced just about every component under the hood of my PC, certainly everything that could be causing a problem. (GPU, CPU, memory, MB, PSU, disk controller, disk cables...). As a result, I am running a virtually brand new computer. Hardware and system problems have been all but eliminated. I have all the latest drivers for everything. It is virtually a brand new computer!
Yet PS/CS4 keeps crashing for no reason that can be established. Adobe have given me lots of homework to do to try to find out what affects it or remedies there are. It is all very tedious, but so far, nothing...
I am coming to the conclusion that there must be something intrinsically wrong with PS/CS4 that makes it incompatible with some systems and software installations, but not necessarily because of any fault with the latter. I have to say that, after initially trying to push me away, Adobe are being very helpful and clearly want (need?) to get to the bottom of this. The trouble is that when the system locks up, it is completely and utterly paralysed, so any diagnostic and error reporting systems are inoperative. This suggests something beneath or beyond Windows, and, if it is not hardware, this points the finger of blame squarely at the activation software, which uses rootkit technology. (Would this be the same on a Mac, I wonder?)
For the record, my system is a Dell Precision 370 desktop with Dell/Phoenix BIOS A08, 3.2GHz Pentium 4 CPU, Intel 925X chipset, 2MB ECC SDRAM, Nvidia Quadro FX3450 graphics, 2x Seagate 146MB Cheetah 5.5k disks (SCSI) in non-RAID configuration. From the limited experience I have had, it seems perfectly capable of running the software (apart from when it crashes, of course.)

  • My computer keeps shutting itself down

at around 2:40AM this mourning my computer shut itself down again
    this has happend several times
i had it running minimal power management  800mhz and all that
i have a 650watt power supply was cheap should still work dont really wanna open my case for the numbers, anyways it just sits there blinking the power light as if the power shut off on me or i tripped a breaker but my UPS wasnt goin off
i have corsair ram that doesnt have a problem with my system it was corsair value select pc3200
5 hard drives currently in the system
    7 fans
my signature will tell the rest, anyone have a clue what could be goin on

Random reboots are often indicators of memory instability.  I don't think overheating or power supply failure are to blame (although you should post the current over your PSU rails in your signature ... look on the side of your PSU).  However, due to the fact that you're running PC2700 RAM (DDR400 RAM often causes more instability than slower variants, such as your DDR333) you should perform some tests before we can be sure the RAM is to blame.
First, run Prime95's blend test.  Download the program, run it, then goto Advanced->Password and enter "9876" (without the quotes).  Then goto Advanced->Priority, and set it to 10.  Now select Options->Torture Test and select the "Blend" option.  Run the program uninterrupted and observe the results.  If your memory is unstable, it should result in an error within minutes (~10 minutes), although you could run it for longer if you feel so inclined.
Another memory check (which checks for physical errors in the RAM itself) is Memtest86.  You must create a bootable CD or floppy and then boot into the program in order to scan your memory.  It may seem like a pain, but in-Windows memory checks often report false positives because of background Operating System components messing with their processes.  Memtest used to have issues with 64 bit boards, but apparently that issue has been resolved.
If you find out that it is your memory that is causing your reboots, there are many steps you can take to eliminate the instability.

  • Purple screen and no boot

The other day my imac suddently crashed while I was working on it. Upon restart, I received no chime, but did notice the fan was running through open holes on the top.( I could not however, hear the hard drive or anything else)After about a minute of a completely black screen, the monitor turned a deep shade of purple.
I've checked the power, etc... but have had no luck getting the machine to boot or for the purple screen to disappear. I've tried re-starting a few times but get the same scenario over and over...
Is it safe to assume that this is a motherboard issue? Any ideas on salvaging this machine?
    thanks

Perhaps, if the problem is not caused by a hardware issue or failure,
you may be able to open up the bottom and use the Power Management
Unit Reset (button) that is hidden next to the airport wireless card location.
    There are a few expensive parts that could also be to blame for this issue;
and a trip to the repair shop for a diagnostic may be warranted.
The PMU reset is a small button; there are some instructions in the service
manual I happen to have a copy of... that won't help you much! I saw in
another post in Discussions, where someone had linked to an XLR8 take-
apart page for the iMacG4, maybe it has this button clearly marked. The
button is rather hard to see once the metal plate is removed from the iMac
and it is small, too. I've not yet had to reset mine; but remember a few
discussions at MFIF referring to that as a cure for some issues.
The PDF service manual page is #108+, for details on PMU location/reset.
The image is most helpful; and the orientation is not mentioned in this
manual I have. Looks like the button has a little picture on or above it
that looks like a tiny battery; you press this ONCE. Twice will do bad.
The little picture is part of a row of small details under a plastic cover,
near the Airport Card slot where the contacts are for that to connect.
Here is a quote from the procedure page of the manual; please note
there are other tests and things not mentioned that a service tech could
perform to better diagnose that machine's problem. [Pg 108-109]
    "The PMU Chip"
The PMU (Power Management Unit) is a microcontroller chip that controls all power functions for the computer. The PMU (location shown below) is a computer within a computer. It has memory, software, firmware, I/O, two crystals, and a CPU. Its function is to: • Tell the computer to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, etc. • Manage system resets from various commands. • Maintain parameter RAM (PRAM). • Manage the real-time clock.
•Important: The PMU is very sensitive and touching the circuitry on the logic board can cause the PMU to crash. If the PMU crashes, the battery life goes from about five years to about two days if the PMU is not reset.
•Refer to the next topic, “Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board” for the procedure. Many system problems can be resolved by resetting the PMU chip. The PMU reset button is located on the right side of the board, refer to the picture (not here.)
"Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board Resetting the PMU"
(Power Management Unit) on the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure before replacing any modules.
    1. Disconnect the power cord.
    2. Remove the user access panel from the bottom of the computer. 3. Press the PMU reset switch (shown below) once on the bottom side of the logic board and then proceed to step
    3. Do NOT press the PMU reset switch a second time because it could crash the PMU chip.
    4. WAIT ten seconds before connecting the power cord and powering the computer on. If the computer powers on, go to the next step.
If the computer does not power on, there is something else wrong with the computer, refer to the symptom/cure, “No Power” in this chapter.
There could be a hardware failure, and if you cannot boot from the
Apple Hardware Test (on supplied CD or boot DVD) you should take
the computer to an authorized Apple service providor for testing, etc.
Best of luck in this; & thanks to Apple for the information posted above.

    Hey guys,
Im computer literate (enthusiast) but new to overclocking. I figured I would just do the genie untill i learned all the ins and outs of the complexity of overclocking properly, rather than just ramp the fsb and voltage without knowing what im doing lol. Well Whenever I try to activate the genie lite it restarts like it says it will do but wont boot and displays FF which seems cpu related. I dont know if my ram is to blame which i have a hunch it could be.

I had the same problem, and MSI advised me to update my BIOS to v1.8.  You might give that a try.  I flashed my BIOS to v1.8, but had other issues, so I reflashed it back to v1.7 before I tested the Genie Lite function.  Right now I'm running two 6950's in CF, and since everything is running smoothly without OC, I've decided to hold off on the OC Genie issues.

If you dont mind me asking what res and games are you playing that require dual cards? I always thought i needed cf or sli untill I built this thing, and im only on a gts450 but at 1920x1080 (23") I play crysis 2 demo max everything, Im just getting back into shooters, only other thing i have played is starcraft 2 and thats maxed too. I had the gts450 in my core2duo and thought i was lacking gpu for a while, guess it was really just the cpu that was weak, and that was only starcraft2 lol (e6400 no oc/2gb ram)

  • Computer Starting, but no display/keyboard/mouse, but work after CMOS clear

I have an MSI Z77A-G45 motherboard, intel i5-3570K CPU, 16 GB of ram, a Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 GPU, XFX PRO650W Core Edition PSU, and am using a 550 VA UPS.
My computer powers up with no posts, all CPU indicator lights are lit, and the display, mouse, and keyboard get no signal, but when I read some posts about solving this problem I cleared my CMOS with the button on the back, and when the computer powers back up signal is sent to my monitor, mouse and keyboard, but upon continuing or running setup the previous behavior continues.
    Help would be appreciated!

I ain't really be able to help you. The only two things i could think of are an empty battery or a faulty board. But for that matter wait for others to answer your post.
But what you are describing sounds like what i experienced five years ago, when i set up a new system with a MSI P35 Neo3-F. I fortunatly bought board, cpu and RAM from the same vendor. Same as you i had to reset CMOS in order to do anything useful with that computer. I think i had to reset everytime i turned on the pc, but not for reboots. Althoug i'm not sure about that.
Besides that i had occasional failures in Windows which is why i did run MemTest86+ from CD. I got some faulty memory addresses in that run and thought the RAM were to blame, but in further passes of memtest i got different addresses. This i mailed to the vendor and i told him, that i'd had no means of figuring out, if the board, the cpu or the RAM was faulty. They told me to send in those three to figure it out themselfs and to give a replacement for the broken one, which turned out to be the mainboard.
After that i still got failures - can't remember what failures - and could make out that the cpu wasn't working correctly. I still believe the broken board did some damage to the cpu sometime i tried to start the PC without resetting the CMOS while maybe having random values in CMOS.
I cannot say that this is fact, but for the vendor it was reasonable enough to also replace the cpu and since then i'm quite cautious when it's about a board that might be trying with random CMOS content.
I don't want to frighten you. I just want to say don't try to much without resetting the CMOS as long as it needs to be resetted all the time.
At least til someone can ensure, that my interpretation of my experience must be wrong.
    Greetings,
      Micha.

  • My US ATV in the UK isn't working properly. Can anyone advise please?

My friend bought me an ATV from the US, but I can't seem to get it to work properly.
It's plugged into a US-UK adaptor, powers up fine, got past the point where I connect to my network. It's just when I get to the main menu screen, it freezes up - staying stuck on the Movies > Top Movies tab.
I try and reset through the remote - no luck. Tried cutting the power and try again - no luck. Tried connecting to my MacBook to restore it through micro USB - won't even recognise the device!
I'm losing the will to live with this - just want the thing working!
Is there something I could be doing wrong, or something else I should test?

If you've not done so remove all other USB connections from the Macbook - if there isn't enough power (usually with non-powered USB hub connection) it may not be detected or restore.
I think it should have an international warranty - do you have a nearby Apple store where they could have a look at your gift?
It's possible you have a faulty AppleTV but firmware issue could also be to blame - was it unopened and unused?
I understand your frustration, though it may just be a bad one.
Also try just connecting power and HDMI if you had ethernet or anything else connected.

  • 7310 - Problem with CIFS and Roaming Profiles since upgrade to 2010.Q1.0.2

We have developed a strange problem with our environment which I'm pretty sure is down to the upgrade to 2010.Q1.0.2 from 2009.Q3.4.1 on our 7310 (all the previous 2009 releases had been fine) since nothing else has changed in our environment. I suspect some changes to the underlying CIFS server causing this?
We have virtual Windows servers hosted on a VMWare VSphere cluster which are stored on the 7310 via iSCSI LUNs and also CIFS shares on the 7310 for home directories and separate CIFS shares for roaming profiles - all paths are correct in AD for each user - we also use folder redirection for XP Pro clients to force things like "Application Data", "My Documents" etc. onto the Homedir share.
What we've been seeing recently (which only started happening after the upgrade) is a lot of failed logons to the domain for users. It looks like the usual corrupted profile problem that has plagued Windows forever ...the usual messages that it cannot log the user on with a copy of their roaming profile, and that it will use a temporary one. Some folder redirections (that are initiated via Group Policy) also don't get applied. Users don't see errors when logging off from a "good" profile, and NTUSER.DAT etc. seemingly gets written correctly - the next time they log on, around half the time the users will get these errors as described below:
Event viewer logs show "cannot find the file specified" errors for NTUSER.DAT, along with "directory name is invalid" errors for some of the folder redirections.
More worrying (and what I think might be the real reason for these failures) are the "offline caching is enabled on the roaming profile share" errors. I think that the client-side caching might not be working - possibly the profiles aren't getting flushed and written correctly upon logout?
Now, unfortunately the MMC snap-in for managing shares doesn't seem to support changing the behaviour for client-side caching on the CIFS shares (as confirmed in the latest 7000-series Admin Guide on page 198).
I've been thinking about unchecking the "Enable Oplocks" box which from the CIFS side would completely stop all client-side caching I presume?
Is this likely to be the culprit here, or is there any other known behaviour that could be causing these errors? Is it also worth disabling "Cache device usage" altogether for the Profiles share itself?
Can anyone help? It's a bit of a strange problem, and something I don't want to raise with Sun on our support contract just yet, since at first glance it looks like a Windows problem, but I suspect the storage could well be to blame...

Unfortunately, this is still not working correctly...
So, it looks like it's not related to the offline caching seeing as it all works on the Q2009 despite the warnings...
Some more errors coming out of userenv.log on the affected Windows machines:
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:230 ReconcileFile: GetFileAttributes on the source failed with error = 2
    USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:230 CopyProfileDirectoryEx: ReconcileFile failed with error = 2
    and later:
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:245 GetShareName: WNetGetConnection initially returned error 2250
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:245 CopyProfileDirectoryEx: Leaving with a return value of 0
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:245 RestoreUserProfile: CopyProfileDirectory failed. Issuing default profile
...which then forces the TEMP profiles.
All other errors linked to this look like "file not found", "invalid path" etc. when the files are present and the paths are correct.
Manually mapping drives using CIFS with UNC paths sporadically fails too now. We have a bunch of GPOs that map shares to users depending on their group memberships - these too are sporadically failing.
It certainly looks to me like it could be a CIFS problem introduced in the Q2010 release.
I'm going to raise a ticket with Sun...

  • Macbook Pro 17 backlight failure

Having spent several months banging on about about how great Macs are to a friend of mine she went out and bought herself a 17" Macbook Pro. Three months down the line and the keyboard and screen illumination have stopped working. When she boots up you can just see (with the aid of a flashlight) the desktop and everything functioning normally - it's just as if someone's turned the lights off and you're having to work in the dark. Other people seem to have experienced this when upgrading to Leopard, but my friend is still running Tiger. Needless to say, having convinced her to try Apple I feel responsible and want to help sort out the problem. Is this a hardware issue, or could software be to blame. I've already tried resetting the PRAM and switching off Sleep, but with no success. Does anyone have any ideas, please?

It's not impossible that a pmu reset (remove ac and battery, press power button for 7 seconds) could fix it, but it sounds like a hardware failure. If you're near an Apple Store I'd take it in. as it's only a few weeks old they might even swap it out.
    Best of luck.

  • Can't reliably create a PDF enabled for commenting in Reader

I've hit a brick wall trying to find out why my Acrobat Pro 7.0.8 is broken. As of yesterday, I cannot reliably create a PDF that is enabled for commenting in Reader. I get an error message: "You do not have permission to write to this file." However, this message is halfway false Acrobat does indeed create a PDF where I tell it to. It's just not a reviewable file, which you can tell when you re-open it and see the special dialog box that first pops in front of you, and there's a key/starburst icon in the lower left corner of the Acrobat window. So the resulting output file isn't really enabled, and I've made no progress.
All I know is that before May 1st, this Acrobat Pro feature worked flawlessly every time I used it.
I tested my own file on two other co-workers' PCs and they also cannot save my file as enabled for commenting. One of them has Acro. Pro 7.0.5 and the other one has Pro 7.0.9. Nor can they save other PDF files as enabled for commenting. But creating a short (one-line) PDF from Word or WordPad DOES work, and I can save that file as enabled for commenting.
I tested a few of my existing PDFs: some of them can be output to the reviewable format without any problem, but some of the more recent ones I can't especially if they're larger. Even a Word file as small as 9 pages will not convert. I tried both printing it to the Adobe PDF printer as well as using PDFMaker. Neither one works on this file. But I was able to create reviewable PDFs from simple Word files and some older (April 2008 or earlier) Word files that were longer.
I think some incompatibility happened because of the Windows updates that get silently shoved to our PCs every Tuesday (I work for a large company). But I could be wrong to blame Microsoft.
Would the new Acrobat Pro 7.1.0 update fix this problem?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3948
My system: Windows XP, Svc. Pack 2, Word 2003.

After I removed the comma in the filenames of my problematic test files, this solution worked for me, too. I was able to again save the PDFs as enabled for commenting in Adobe Reader (to make them reviewable).
    Thank you, thank you!
This definitely looks like a bug to me, because a comma IS allowed in filenames in both the PC Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

  • AE CC Render error output module failed

Hi, I tried my best to find this answer on the forums but couldn't find anything current.
I have isolated two issues in AE CC where I can duplicate a failed render with this message:
After Effects error: Rendering error while writing file "xxx". An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted. (-1610153464)
This happens when opening an AE CS6 project and trying to render a simple comp with only one text layer and a moving mask. It also just happened after my first round trip test with Cinema 4D. I could RAM preview the c4d layer but the output to Quicktime h.264 failed.
I have even tried a full reinstall of AE CC. I have the basic FxFactory Pro plugins and MagicBullet Looks installed, but neither are being used since this is a single 1280x720 comp with a single C4D layer. Plus like I said it failed with the same error in past CS6 files.
I don't know how to force disable a plugin to test that, but I can't see how an unused plugin could cause a render to fail like this.
    I'm on a new (late 2012) 27" iMac
    3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    8GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB VRAM
    OS X 10.8.4
    AE CC 12.0.0.404
    CUDA driver 5.0.59
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Matt

Olaf, did you read my reply where I explained my solution? First you should try the steps outlined in the article Todd references:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2011/02/troubleshooting-quicktime- errors-with-after-effects.html
There seems to be a good way to isolate if it's the same issue I had, though. Let me go into a bit of depth for you.
The trick was to launch the OS X app called Console, located in Applications > Utilities. It is a program that compiles and displays the system logs in real time. It's great to see the little things happening in the system that don't make it into the user interface. When I had my Console up and generated that same error you're having, I noticed this error in the log:
The key here is the Adobe QT32 Server, which is mentioned in the TCP part of the article I linked to above from Todd. In my case at least, what was happening was that a third party app called AirServer was talking to the system's QuickTime over the same TCP ports the QT32 Server engine was trying, and it resulted in Adobe QT32 Server crashing, and that alert being thrown up in AfterEffects.
If you're in the same boat, it means you have some sort of app or system extension that is also talking to QuickTime over TCP. That may not make any sense, but the easy thing to do is quit ALL third party apps, then quit AE, then restart AE.
In my situation if AE gave me the error and then I quit AirServer, the error still happened because Adobe QT32 had already crashed. You have to relaunch AE after closing the offending third party app.
To be sure you've quit all third party apps, open Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities), chose "My Processes" from the dropdown menu, and scan through the list to make sure. You don't have to recognize all the processes there, but you should be able to recognize any third party ones you put there.
    Hope that helps!

  • IPhoto '08 stuck in July, recent events missing

iPhoto 7.1.4 is behaving oddly. The last 12 Months folder is stuck on 08/07/2008 and all the imports since then are missing. The original images are there in the originals folder. I've tried rebuilding the library and using iPhoto Library Manager but still have the same problem with the new library.
I've got over 4000 photos taking up 25G of disk space. Is this the problem?
I have TimeCapsule - could this be to blame some how?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open Photo window
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • EA6400: Port forward two Netgear ReadyNAS FTP servers

I have a new EA6400 router with the latest May 2014 firmware. I also have two Netgear ReadyNAS network attached storage devices that are set up as FTP servers. With my old Netgear WNDR3700 with DD-WRT firmware (after the last thunderstorm, may she rest in peace), I could easily set up both with port forwarding and access them outside of my LAN by setting up 4321 and 4311 as ports that translate to 21 and 21 to two different addresses on my network. I have them set up the same way in the EA6400, going into Single Port Forwarding and forwarding 4321 to 21 at 192.168.1.144 and 4311 to 21 at 192.168.1.143, but the EA6400 tells me that I can't use the same port (21). Why not? They're going to different addresses. (Oh I wish I could get DD-WRT on this router!) Is there a way to set up two FTPs on a local network and make them accessible through the EA6400 to an address on the internet?
I have also attempted to disable one of the port forwards and attempted to access the remaining FTP server and have had no success. I have successfully forwarded a port on the EA6400 to my security camera system so I can monitor my home from the internet, so I know the basics of how this is done. I just can't get single port forwarding to work with my NAS FTP servers.
    Any ideas?

I switched the settings around and now the other ReadyNAS is coming up, but the one that used to come up no longer does. I also tried replacing the 10001 with 2121 on both EA6400 and on that particular ReadyNAS because it seemed to be a little more common a number for an alternate FTP port.
So now I have access to the one I couldn't access before and the one I could access before I can no longer access. Of course I can switch them back around again, but I'd like both to work.
Of course one could potentially put the blame on the ReadyNAS as possibly not being able to work FTP off any other protocol than 21 but I have to place blame on the EA6400 router firmware. This worked well under DD-WRT.
Anyone have any more ideas? I appreciate the help.

  • Wanted: A contact manager/address book with a sense of time

There is one feature which I didn't find in any contact management application out there, and which keeps me using paper-based solutions: A way to see how old old any specific piece of information is. Use case: „This phone number of X I wrote down/saved here, is it the most recent one, or am I risking calling the next tenant of the flat (who I really don't want to talk to for some reason)? When did I make this phone number entry?“
I believe I have looked at almost any contact manager available in the Arch repos and the AUR, but I may still have missed one. If any of you know of a contact app with a sense of time, please speak up.
Otherwise, maybe some of the developers among you also find that this feature would be nice to have, and feel inspired to code something. That would be great!
If I had any say in the details, the data backend would be something easily accessible by other programs (text files, maybe vcard), it would integrate nicely with email clients for adding and completing addresses, and it would have a simple UI (don't care if graphical, console or pure CLI, as long as it works). For reference, I quite liked "contacts" from the Pimlico project, which doesn't seem to be developed anymore (project website is down). Also, osmo looks nice, although it is doing too many different things for my taste (contacts, calendar, tasks, notes).
One way to implement this would obviously be to combine and integrate any app which saves its data in text files with a version control system like git. However, that might be overkill.

You don't have to implement as much search logic, only a search mask and a result list.
    True.
skanky wrote:Maybe the triggered script could then run "git blame" and insert the information into a custom field in the contact data file
I wouldn't store the time info redundantly in the contacts file when it is already stored in the git repo. The frontend program can just call "git blame" at runtime to get the time info to be displayed.  Redundancy could lead to corrupt (contradictory) time data if something goes wrong in the saving process, and at worst, it might create an infinite loop (when the file is changed, "git blame" is called and the time info inserted into the file, which is thus changed, which triggers "git blame" being called again…)

I'm kind of sad that the best / easiest / simplest solution so far sounds like just keeping a digital version of the original paper-based solution, AKA a plain text file. :/ Benefits over paper include being able to do a search and never having to wonder if that scribble was a "5" or a "6". :P
Well, I'm not that sad I guess. I do love plain text. It never goes out of style! :D
While I share to your sadness and your love for plain text, bare text files seem to lack certain features that I would consider crucial: MUA integration and easy grouping/tagging (or similar) of contacts. Both could of course be implemented as simple shell utilities operating on text files, and the result might be a really awesome contact managing solution…
