CPU fan running at 3900 rpm tried everything so far.

I have an early 2008 imac running upgraded ram, Mountain Lion 10.8. I hve a CPU fan that is running at 3900 rpms. I have downloaded the SMC fan control, I have tried doing the option, command p,r. I have done all the shut down procedures. I tried ro restart in diagnostics mode but it wont restart in diagnostics mode (I tried using option D as well as just D on start up) I downloaded and tried using a shell app command with Automator that is suposed to force the fans tor run at a particular speed ie: 1200,1500,2400 etc. but it does not work. I do not have a start upd disc for Mountain Lion. Don't know what else to do.

I have tried running the hardware test I cannot get it to run starting up while holding D or starting up while holding option D. I do not have a OS X
install DVD 2.

It's clear that there's a problem with your Mac, so the best you can do is to make a backup of your files and take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get it repaired.
If you want to know what's failing, run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In your iMac, Apple Hardware Test is included in the Mac OS X Install DVD 2, so insert it and hold the D key while your computer is starting. Disconnect all peripherals except the keyboard and mouse, choose your language, mark the box to use the extended mode and start the test. At the end of the test you will probably find an error, so copy it here

  • ODD and CPU fans running at high RPMs

    Hello!
My iMac's ODD and CPU fans are running at unusual high speeds. If I turn the computer off and on they usually run at a normal rate but start rotating at around 3700 RPM very quickly (about 1-2 minutes after the OS X has started). The CPU load is not unusually high. The HDD fan is not affected.
I have tried SMC and PRAM resets multiple times.

  • IMac cpu fan running at full rpm

    hi all
A few days ago my cpu fan started running flat out. I have done the smc or whatever it is caled reset thing where you unplug the cored ect.
I have done the hardware test with no bad results.
I have checked activity monitor for cpu usage and there is nothing unusual there, so I can only guess that the cpu temp censor is faulty.
I should also add that this machine has been running non stop since mid 2007 , with the exception of the odd blackout and restart, thats pretty amazing i think.
maybe its time has finally come ;(
    any clues ??
    thanks

SMC is firmware and OS X is software, which has nothing to do. Furthermore, you are using a very old iMac, so SMC should not have been updated with OS X 10.10.2.
If you have tried a SMC reset and it did not work, run Apple Hardware Test (make sure you choose an extended test) to see if there is any problem with a temperature sensor or anything like this -> Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support
Note that you may need the DVDs that came with your Mac in order to run it. If you get an error at the end of the test, please copy it here.

I suspect you have hardware problem with a fan sensor. Doing a software install will not help the machine needs to be taken in for service. If you run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode it should reveal the error code. If it does not then run AHT an additional 2-3 times to be sure in Extended Mode. Each pass will take about 30-60 minutes.

  • CPU fan running full speed after 15 minutes

My 3 month old iMac 24" has just started having fan problems.
Before I went away on a training course, it was working fine. Left it switched off at the outlet for 3 days, now the CPU fan runs full speed after the iMac has been switched on for 15 to 20 minutes.
CPU temp is 24C, CPU heatsink is 28C. Ambient is 17C. CPU fan is 3600rpm. Other fans are normal.
CPU usage is less that 10%. Only Safari is running.
I've tried resetting the SMC - left all plugs disconnected for 15 minutes, reconnected mains power for 15 minutes, reconnected USB, then switched on.
Still the same - OK for 15 minutes, then CPU fan runs full speed.
Anything else that I can try?

I tried again, following your instructions exactly. It seemed to work, running normally for about an hour.
I left all the USB devices unplugged, except for the keyboard and mouse.
I then shut the iMac down, but left the mains power turned on at the wall. When I switched it on again 2 hours later, all was OK for 15 minutes, then the CPU fan ran at full speed.
Shutting down for a few seconds fixes it for another 15 minutes.
I'm wondering if it's a software problem, although I haven't loaded any apps recently, apart from a few monitoring programs since this problem appeared.
Last night I left it running the extended hardware test for a couple of hours, and the fans were fine.
One thing that I noticed yesterday was that the "GPU" temperature readings in iStat were all missing (just "-" displayed) for a couple of seconds when I clicked on Dashboard. Is there a way to keep iStat open while I'm using the iMac?
I think I'll try booting XP and see what happens.

  • GPU temperature is above 70 C, and CPU fan is above 2400 rpm

I've had my iMac for two years now. I play a lot of games and watch a lot of HD videos. In the past week, the computer has gotten a lot hotter than usual and it stutters a lot, and I feel like the two are related.
Today while playing a game I noticed that the GPU Diode reached 70 C (using iStat Pro), which I have never seen before. Therefore, the CPU fan was at 2400 rpm.
I play a lot of games, including this same one, and I have never seen the GPU this hot before, and almost never hear the fans running so loudly and so rapidly. (I can't even recall a time when I could very clearly hear the fans running.)
Could all this be a sign to a more bigger problem?

It's all settled down by now but here were some stats I posted earlier:
    HD: 53
    CPU: 52
    Ambient: 30
    GPU Diode: 71
    GPU Heatsink: 66
    Mem Controller: 60
    Optical Drive: 52
    Power supply 2: 75
    Fan speeds:
    Optical drive: 1110 rpm
    Hard drive: 1100 rpm
    CPU fan: 1421 rpm
Which part of the iMac do I blow out the dust? Do I use compressed air (which I have) or a vacuum cleaner? Do I do it through the vent at the back/top of the iMac, or open the memory bay and do it through there (and if so, do I have to take out the memory sticks first?).

  • Macbook pro  fans running at 6200 rpm,running slowly and 35deg C?

About i week ago i  was noticing significant slowdown in the operation of my mac. Yesterday the slowdowns were so much so as to render it useless.(30+seconds to realize that i had scrolled). I had just downloaded SOPHOS...it found nothing. so i assumed installing it had done something. i proceeded with a clean instal. After a few trys i was able to reinstall and boot up. The computer is functioning but not at the level of a wiped mac. there is still lag as i write this sentence, and at almost every action i see the pinwheel. I did a reset of the SMC and there are no hogs of CPU in the Activity Monitor(All programs). I downloaded a wiget to allow me to see temperature and fanspeed. the highest temperature is 35 degrees C and that is of the CPU, yet my fans are still posting speeds of 6204 rpm.
To make matters worse i'm overseas and cant seem to find information on a genius bar near me.(Toulouse France)
I feel like ive tried everything.
    -Highfan speeds
-Laggy functioning (akin to a 5 year old PC).

Ive only had this this a year and a couple months(warrently just ran out) im prepared to have to pay to fix but has anyone had similar issues? any estimation on what it would cost?
I find it incredibly coincidental this happened the day steve jobs died....
Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

Backup your files before doing anything. May be a dying hard drive, would account for slowness. Software update fully.
    Perform a hardware test

  • CPU Fan running fast

    Hey Guys!
I've some Problems with my IMAC 27" early 2011.
The CPU fan is running at about 3800 RPM even though, the sensors say, the CPU is pretty cold.
Here the Temps that iStat gives me:
    HD: 41° C
    CPU: 33° C
    GPU: 43° C
    MEM: 38° C
    Optical: 38° C
    CPU Usage: User 0-2 %, System 0%, Nice 0%, Idle: 98-100%
The problem occours some 10-15 minutes after I've switched on the IMAC and it stays, even if I restart the IMAC for at least 2 hours. Once the fan is returning to it's normal RPM (after 2 hours or more, mostly after being in Standby), i can work for several days and it doesn't return, unless the IMAC is switched off and on again. I think, the IMAC slows down, when it has this problem. Especially scrolling in Safari is extremely slow then. Sometimes it even stops!
Things I tried to correct this:
    SMC-Reset --> Didn't succeed.
Start in 'Safe Mode' --> Well it's running in save mode right now and sounds like a vacuum-cleaner.
    Disconnect all externals --> Nothing
    Deactivate Time-Machine --> Nothing
    P-Ram-Reset (?) --> Nothing
    New User Account --> Nothing
I think the problem first started to be there some days after installing Lion. By the way: My MBP 15" Late 2008 runs great with the same stuff on it.
    Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks a lot & greetings from Germany!!!

I've got the opposite problem, my AMD CPU is running around 55C and the fan hardly ever exceeds 1200 rpm most of the time its running around 950rpm.  I think the 48C to 65C is running on the edge of to hot in my opinion, I like to stay around 35C-40C. Motherboard, video card and hard drive all stay in the 30C range. I tried to speed the fan up with SpeedFan program but it can not interface.
I hope someone can give us a answer, I checked the  UEFI and could not find any setting allowing controlling fan speeds on my ENVY 700-200z/AMD A10 cpu.

  • CPU Fan running really fast even at low temperature.

I bought a HP Envy 700-160eo desktop computer 5 or 6 months ago and for the last 2 months the CPU fan has been running really fast even at low temperature. It's like locked to about 2400RPM as soon as I boot up my PC. Even if I get 30 degrees celcius it runs at 2600RPM. I've tried resetting my CMOS and tried updating my BIOS, but the BIOS update that you are providing me on the HP Envy 700-160eo driver & update section isn't compatible with my PC. The update is for 700-0xx. I've been using the program called Argus Monitor for controlling my fan speed.

  • Temp and Fans running at high rpm

My CPU A is running at 93˚F and both fans are running over 6000 rpm. I've checked permissions and verified, did a system shut down, removed battery, disconnected power and help power button for 5 secs for restart and still fans noise is extremely loud. I've checked activity monitor and everything seems fine. Anyone have any other ideas to make this machine run cooler and with less noise? I recently added Adobe software updates.

Some versions of iStat Pro were implicated in "wake from sleep" issues especially when "Network" was turned "On" in the settings, PB1701.
It is generally a reliable piece of software though. Personally I prefer Marcel Bresink's "Hardware Monitor" - http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html , which provides additional information and runs as an app, rather than a widget. It also allows you to generate ongoing "history" graphs, which can be useful in tracking down "high stress" activities and the like. (A Hardware Monitor "widget" is also available for those who like such things)

  • Edge 130 overheats and shuts down, but CPU fan runs at low speed

Hi! I am having a problem with my Edge E130, running un Windows 8.1 64-bit.  When running under high load the laptop will at times overheat so much that the system does a hard shutdown - it simply powers off. I installed Speedfan - it shows the CPU at above 90 degrees celsius. The weird thing is that the CPU fan is not running at full speed. I do not know why. Is there a way to fix this? The fan should at least run at full speed. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the reply! I can't seem to find a black and white sticker. There is a sticker which is black with light grey text. Is it one of these two numbers? label P/N 0B07208CT1 label P/N 0B95210 I am not using any fan control software. Also, my BIOS version is the latest available from Lenovos support site. (when I update the BIOS last time, the fan was running at very high RPMs for a while during the install. So it seems it would be possible for it to run faster)

  • Loud fans, Running 3100-3500 rpm

    Hi all,
I've replaced this system in the past year because the fans were unbearable. I wanted to use this system as a server so I recently turned it back on with hopes my fans decided to fix themselves. Alas, no such luck.
This is a late 2005 model Quad Core G5. I purchased it and within the year one of my processors "burned up" and it replaced under warranty. No issues up until last year when my fans revved up and wouldn't stop. I used this system heavily for graphics and needed a reliable system so I upgraded after doing all sorts of troubleshooting.
What I have done to try to rectify this fan issue:
    • reset PMU/Cuda as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939?viewlocale=en_US#where
    • made sure the plastic deflector was in place
    • took out the non Apple RAM to see if that was the issue, never replaced it figuring that I should keep it out while trying to fix
    • looked for coolant leaks
    • ended up taking out the original hard drive and replacing it with two new drives and reinstalling & upgrading to OSX.4.8
    • installed iStat Pro widget (telling me my CPU fans are between 3100-3600 rpm)
    • installed the Temperature Monitor application as well
I would love to continue on with this system as an extra computer but with this noise and the speed of these fans I am very concerned. I'd appreciate any assistance with this. Thanks!

Is this something I have to haul it in to Apple for?
More likely an independent service provider, I don't think Apple Stores work on them anymore.
've seen a couple of reports where no leaks showed, but the liguid apparently evaporated with out trace, leaving only goo in the pumps.
You never did say what temps were reported.

  • IMAC G5 fans running at high RPM

    Hello,
I have a 20" G5 iMac and just had the motherboard replaced under warranty. Since the replacement my fans will start to run at very high rpm's fr no reason. It will happen even when the computer is not being used and no applications are running. It is currently at:
    CPU 122 degrees
    CPU fan 2996 rpm
    HD 124 degrees
    HD fan 4178 rpm
    System fan 3098 rpm
I have called applecare and they had me do several resets which seemed to help for about 1 hour and then the fans have ramped up and not gone down in the past hour. This last time I was watching TV and heard a noise from the computer and low and behold it was the fans. Nobody was working on the computer and all apps were closed. I bought this computer in September 2005 and have had 2 lcd's replaced and a logic board replaced. I am getting frustrated with this, my first, Apple computer. Does anyone have an idea of why the fans are running so high? I never had a problem like this with my old logic board.

Have you looked in Activity Monitor to see if any applications are causing the fans to run? Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.

  • PMG5 Dual 2.0 CPU Fans Running at (very) different speeds

I purchased a refurbished PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 from Apple 8-10 months ago and I always thought the fans ran louder than I expected. Recently, I opened the case and noticed that the bottom front CPU fan was running much slower than the top CPU fan (with the clear shield in place). I checked this with software and here is what I found...
CPUA ~ 300 rpm on average
CPUB ~ 3150 rpm on average
    CPUA Temp ~ Amb 46C
    CPUB Temp ~ Amb 37C
Nothing changed when switching from Highest Performance to Automatic. Is there a sensor that needs fixing/cleaning or should I take it in for service?
    Thank you for your help!

    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 - GeForce FX 5200 Model   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes take it in, this is a considerable difference.
There is only a few hundred (at most) RPM difference between my CPU A and B intake fans.
Either you got a dead processor or your fans need to be recalibrated or your firmware isn't right.
All three cases is a good reason to have Apple look at it.
It might be the software your using to read the fan speeds, download Hardware Monitor, it seems to be the most accurate and up to date.
I'm sure you have stressed the processors and checked in Activity monitor to see if both your CPU's are alive and kicking.
