Hi, I am trying to create a second database in Oracle 10g in solaris 10. I know i need to set up the ORACLE_SID
i have 2 questions.
if i set up ORACLE_SID, am i orverwriting the current ORACLE_SID? or i am just creating another one.
another question, when i do setenv ORACLE_SID catdb
the command failed, it tells me setenv not found.
thanks.

create database catdb
2 logfile group1 ('/data/oradata/catdb/redo1.log') size 10M,
3 group 2 ('/data/oradata/catdb/redo2.log') size 10M,
4 group 3 ('/data/oradata/catdb/redo3.log') size 10M
5 datafile '/data/oradata/catdb/dbcatdb.dbf'
6 size 80
7 autoextend on next 8M maxsize unlimited extent management local
8 sysaux datafile '/data/oradata/catdb/sysaux.dbf'
9 size 16M
10 autoextend on next 4M maxsize unlimited
11 undo tablespace undo
12 default '/data/oradata/catdb/undo.dbf'
13 size 10M
14 default temporary tablespace temp
15 tempfile '/data/oradata/catdb/temp.dbf'

  • How to create second DATABASE

    Hi Experts,
    We have 4 nodes oracle 11.1 RAC with oracle 10g2 DATABASE with ASM in redhat5.1.
    the system is not more file system
    now my boss want to add additional file system and ask me to create new database in RAC.
    My question is which is best to create new database?
    1) create second database under existing oracle server.
    in these way, which bad effection is for existing DB that support a heavy data loading, GIS application and stream (data replication)
    How to configure new ASM for new database? are there two ASM instance in system?
    or
    2) install new oracle in new directory. configure new ASM and create new database as ASM in new directory.
    In this case, it seems that two DB is total separately without touch each other.
    I do not have idea.
    Please advice me your experience for RAC to handle two or more database and any tips.

    Why?
    This is not how RAC scales. RAC scales by adding more servers to the cluster, thereby increasing the processing capacity of the cluster. RAC does not scale by adding more instances to a server node.
    You want to pay once for the overheads of a database instance. You want to have a single large SGA for the instance to use - as it is better than having 2 smaller SGAs for 2 instances. You want pay, in bytes, once for a system tablespace, temp tablespace, undo tablespace and redo/undo logs. You want to pay once in memory and CPU for a set of system processes for that instance - a database writer, log writer, system and process monitors, etc.
    It does not make sense to pay twice for any of these. 2 system monitor processes are not somehow better than one. 2 smaller SGA are not better than 1 large SGA. 2 sets of ASM instances do not provide a better service than a single ASM instance.
    My question is which is best to create new database?Create a logical database - within Oracle that means you create a new schema. That schema is a logical database. It can have its own tablespaces. It can have its own resource profile. t can even have its own temp space, etc.
    1) create second database under existing oracle server.Correct - this is what I refer to as a schema.
    in these way, which bad effection is for existing DB that support a heavy data loading, GIS application and stream (data replication)
    How to configure new ASM for new database? are there two ASM instance in system?Single ASM instance.
    or
    2) install new oracle in new directory. configure new ASM and create new database as ASM in new directory.
    In this case, it seems that two DB is total separately without touch each other.No. As this is exactly how one does not scale Oracle. Remember that if you want a 2nd set of instances, you need to use existing memory and CPU top pay for the overheads of that.. which means you will be taking away from the existing instance. Why turn the existing instance into something less than what it was before in order to create another (also inferior) instance?
    No, it is better to add to the existing instance instead... rather add a logical database to it. Rather add more space, more memory, more RAC nodes to it.. as that is how Oracle RAC scales.

  • How to create second database at ASM in 4 node RAC system

    Hi Experts,

    we want to add second database at ASM in RAC system based on manager decision.
    how do I add second database in ASM with exist database?
    Do I need to created new ASM insatnce?
    how to create two new diskgroup? is it under existing ASM instance or new ASM instance?
    how to reset ASM properity to support ( or new) ASM instance and two database?
    Do I need to configure AMS again after added more space into ASM?
    I could not find ducument that add seconf database into ASM in RAC system.
    I want add second database by dbca. any experience for add second database in ASM RAC ?
    Thanks for help!
    JIm

    Hi... I'm in the same situation.
    I need to add a new second database on a RAC installation based on already available ASM instance.
    I'm using 11gR2.
    I read your suggested documentation. Then I typed asmca and analyzed my asm configuration:
    As you can see I have a DISK GROUP NAME with several FREE space.
    !http://img522.yfrog.com/img522/8405/dbca20100203173248.jpg!
    If I select Volumes tab the following is my current configuration:
    !http://img682.yfrog.com/img682/562/dbca20100203173343.jpg!
    Selecting Create button, I can insert some values as you can see:
    !http://img403.yfrog.com/img403/9889/dbca20100203173403.jpg!
    First question:
    Is this the right way to create space for a new database ? Consider that running dbca.. no DISK GROUP NAME is available.
    Second question:
    When I created my first database on this DISK GROUP NAME no volumes were created. Why now I have to do it ? Is this necessary to really separate datafiles coming from different databases ?

    Hello all!
    I have posted this earlier and apparently no one is able to reply. I need some answers regarding this matter. We are currently doing a project in one of our clients.
    Right now, our team has created second database in our server, we now have two databases, one is in port 1521 and the new one is in port 1526. We need to access our 2nd database named SWITCHDB. Unfortunately, we are encountering the following error in our test program:

    where:
    DATABASE = jdbc:oracle:thin:@Victoria:1526:SWITCHDB
    USERNAME = switch
    PASSWORD = switch
    DRIVER = oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
    We searched through this forum as well and we followed the advice to get the latest classes111.zip and put it in our classpath. Unfortunately, the error remains the same. Even if we changed our classes111.zip to classes12.zip, still the error is the same. =(
    We are using Oracle 8i and Sun Solaris. We don't have any idea right now on how to go through this scenario. We could still connect to the first database and have the usual transactions without encountering any errors, but not when we connect in the second database. How is that? Are we missing some things?
    Please feel free to reply. I would really appreciate it to state your views and advices.
    Thanks you so much.
    Regards,
    Ronron

    I make multiple database connections all the time with this code, perhaps you can try it. If it still does'nt work then perhaps your second database is not configured properly. In that case, compare the two databases for differences:
    try
    Connection conn = null;
    String host= "serverip:1526"; //server ip address : portnumber
    String sid = "SWITCHDB"; //use the db's SID
    String user = "Victoria";
    String pwd = "VicsPassword";
    //Register driver, make sure you have installed correct drivers.
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    //Get thin connection
    String thin = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + host + ":" + sid;
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection(thin,user,pwd);
    catch(SQLException se)
    se.printStackTrace();

  • Create a second database from an existing ORACLE_HOME

    DB Version:11.1.0.6.0
    OS : AIX
    We have a database running for an OLTP test environment. We need to create another database of same version (11.1.0.6.0) for Datawarehousing needs. The init.ora parameter are going to be different for this. So we need to create another database.
    We are having some issues with dbca due to some JAVA related errors. So, we need to use the 'CREATE DATABASE' statement.
    This is what i am going to do.
    1. create an init.ora file for the new db and copy it to $ORACLE_HOME/dbs
    2. Set the env variables
    export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1
    export PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    export ORACLE_SID= <sid of the database which i am going to create>
    3.
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL> startup nomount pfile=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initora318.ora
    4. Copy, Paste the Create Database statement.
    Are these steps right?
    I know that Enterprise Manager would not be configured using this method. But configuring EM shouldn't be a complex exercise.Right?
    Edited by: N.Page on 11-Sep-2009 00:28

    Just a small note: You can save "database create scripts" from dbca in any other system(use the same main version please) if your db server has issues. In this way you can get the original scripts and you wont forget any steps...

    Thanks to all your suggestions, I finally got it. I tried to run dbca remotely and I think that's why I didn't get the GUI. So I installed a VNC server to view the remote server's desktop . The re I ran dbca ,created a second database successfully.
    Now I have a question. How to get connected to the second database without affecting the first one. I typed startup command from sqlplus. It said ORA:00205 --control files not found errror . But I have the correct path of the control files in my
    $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initorcl2.ora (ex: /oracle/product/10.2.0/oradata/orcl2/control01,
    /oracle/product/10.2.0/oradata/orcl2/control01,

    Where doed it look for the control file parameter. In the init.ora file or initorcl2.ora??
    Or do I have start the instance first for the second database. How?
    Please let me know.

    Hello
    I want to add second oracle instance to my already

    tell me also how to access second instance while first
    instance is running.
    Please also tell me how to configure and run second

    What do you mean by second instance?
    Second instance of the same database or another instance pointing to a new database.
    If you want another instance instance of the same database, you need to have the parallel server option. Typically, you don't have a second instance of the same database in the same machine.
    If you want a new database, the use database configuration assitant to create a new database. You can start the new instance by the follwing way.
    At command promt, type:
    svrmgrl
    connect internal/oracle
    startup pfile=<pfile name with full path>
    Hope this helps,
    Raghu.

    The fact that i am able to create a content database through powershell sorts out permissions problems. I am certain of that because the w3wp.exe and the powershell.exe used for both creations were run under the same user.
    The timeout always happens aroud 120 seconds after i started the creation. The creation via powershell takes about 3,5 minutes.
    Here for the folks that ask me, why i haven't asked google or bing or some other search engine.
    I tried the solutions suggested here
    http://www.sharepointpals.com/post/Error-while-Creating-Web-Application-through-Central-Administration , here
    http://anthonyspiteri.net/sharepoint-2010-web-ui-timeout-creating-web-application-quick-fix/ and here
    http://blogs.ibs.com/Duane.Odum/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=33
    which i thought pointed me to the right solution.
    But those post unfortunatly didnt worked out.
    I also tried to alter the web.config files (i know that isn't recommended or supported, but it didn't change anything so those are back to normal as well)
    So here are my question:
    Can you guys help me solve this issue?
    Are there any other places where timeouts can be managed or defined?
    P.S.: I am new to using this forum. so pls don't crucify me for doing a mistake.
    P.S.S: My english is very poor also :D
    With best regards
    Simon

    Be careful with settings like these because there may be a much deeper issue at hand. I have had an issue with a customer that manifests itself as a timeout on a site collection. It was very hard to track since it didn't happen frequently. We engaged Microsoft
    Support to find out the root cause but all they could point at is a general network issue that pertains to authentication. After digging deeper, we found out that the network issue was caused by a saturated network connectivity to the domain controller that
    impacts a site collection when the database is making an authentication call. Keep this solution as more of a quick fix but be sure to conduct a deeper investigation of the real root cause
