Creating a Database in Apex
Hello,
I'm new to the forum and new to Apex, but it's been requested of me to create a database using Application Express.
I already designed a database in Access 2007, but am having a lot of difficulty in migrating that schema to Application Express.
I'm looking for solid resources that can take me step by step through the process of creating a database, but all the videos I've seen online aren't specifically for database creation.
Can anyone assist?
Thanks,
Derek

How to create an database account authentication scheme in apex
Dear
I have an apex installation (embeded) on oracle 11g.
I want to create a database account authentication scheme in apex. I have seen the page with different tab like name, subsription, source, session not valid, login processing, logout URL,session cookie attributes and comments.
I want to know what are the things to be specifed on these tabs and the effects. I have gone thru the documentation 'Application Builder User’s Guide Release 4.1' , but the functionalities of these tabs are not mentioned.
Please help.
Dennis
Edited by: Dennis John on Feb 28, 2012 10:57 PMThanks to dear Jit
I am new to apex.
I have gone thru that documents but I couldn't find any detailed documentation about the database account authentication scheme configuration
The database account authentication scheme creation interface will show tabs like name, subsription, source, session not valid, login processing, logout URL,session cookie attributes and comments.
I want to know what are the things to be specifed on these tabs and how it will reflect in the login. The specified documentation is not giving any detail about the above mentioned tabs of authentication scheme creation iwizard.
And also I want to know how the applciation user will be mapped to the database account?
As per my understanding a database user (for each run time user) is required for to authenticate the apex run time login other than the applciation schema user (holds the objects of applicaiton)
run time user means - end user who uses the applcaition, not the developer.
Please help.

How to create a database link between an 8i (apps) database and APEX
Want to link my Oracle APPS databse on 8i with Oracle XE and APEX. Any idea how to achieve this ?
I don't know what Apex is!!! But try to follow these instructions.
It works for Oracle 9i.
As far as I know, you are supposed to have installed other than ORACLE Client to complete these instructions.
1. Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Data Sources (ODBC)
Folder: System DSN /
click add
Choose : Microsoft Access Driver
Data Source Name : my_test
Description : any_description_you_want
click Database/Select... : full pathname for <your_file.mdb>
click OK
Click OK
2. Goto OH\hs\admin:
2.1) Create a copy of "inithsodbc.ora" file giving it this name:
initmy_test.ora
2.2) Edit "initmy_test.ora" and change as below.
# HS init parameters
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = my_test
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = OFF
3. Add this entry to listener ( Don't forget to stop/start the listener )
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = my_teste)
(ORACLE_HOME = <Path to OH> ) ### Ex: D:\ORANT901
(PROGRAM = hsolesql)
4. Now you need to add entries to point to the HS in the tnsnames.ora :
access =
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<your_host>)(PORT=1521))
(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=my_test))
(HS=my_test)
5. Now you need to go into the database and create the database link:
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK "ACCESS_DB" USING 'access';
6. select * from your_table@ACCESS_DB;

Installation problems on Fresh 11.1.0.6 database and Apex 3.1.1
I hope someone can help - at wit's end trying to get Apex up and running. I've looked through the forum over and over and don't see a resolution.
I have installed 11g Enterprise Edition on a Solaris 5.10 64bit Sparc system, created a database, setup and configured dbconsole for enterprise manager.
Database is up, enterprise manager is up and I can connect and browse just fine, but when I went to set up and configure Apex (it was version 3.0 that came with the database) I could only get a blank page trying to go to either the apex or apex_admin pages.
So re-read documentation and couldn't see what I did wrong. So I started a new Apex install, dropping the FLOWS_030000 and FLOWS_FILES users, downloaded apex 311, and did a fresh install.
For the record, I'm trying to use the Embedded PL/SQL Gateway instead of the Oracle HTTP Server.
Here are my steps:
Downloaded apex_3.1.1.zip, loaded it up on server, and unzipped the file

all I get is a blank page.
http://dbsu01a.sit.us.wamu.net:7459/apex
returns a "page not found" error.
It must be one of those "is your computer plugged in?" things - any help would be greatly appreciated. Here was the fix:
My local_listener parameter in the init.ora (spfile) was not set. I ran the following as sys:
alter system set local_listener='(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=<hostname>)(PORT=<port>))' scope=both;
Bounced the listener and the database and after about 3 minutes listener status showed the following new endpoint:
Listening Endpoints Summary...
(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<host>)(PORT=9969)))
(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<host>)(PORT=7459))(Presentation=HTTP)(Session=RAW)) <-- this is the XDB entry.
After that I was able to log into APEX! -
Method to Use in Creating a Database--need assistance
I'm new to Oracle Apex and would like to create a database. Let me tell you the scenario. Iim capturing 4 types of informatoin initially from focus groups, survey results, blog post, and drop off surveys. I would like to input the informtion gathered from each session in each table ,some tables with common fields. Then I would like to maintain one master table which would have all fields. At some point, i would like to reference the common fields in each database. What's the best way to approach this? Maybe i do not need multiple tables--maybe I can have one large application and form a report to pull the information. However, I think the recommendation was to make 4 separate tables--please advise

However, I think the recommendation was to make 4 separate tables--please adviseI'd advise you to google "data normalization" and get familiar with the concept of 'normalizing' your data to "third normal form" (aka TNF or 3NF). A proper analysis of your data, and how the different data elements will dictate how many tables, what they contain, and how they relate. I can almost guarantee trying to use a single table is a mistake. That's why we call them relational databases, not just data dumps. -
Uploading Documents to Another Database Through APEX
Hi,
I am trying to find a solution for uploading documents through APEX, but storing them in a database on a different server other than the server where apex is installed.
I am unable to use DBLINK, because we are needing to pass a BLOB column. We have also looked into the DAD, but it only allows for one database connection for the APEX instance. I am pondering with creating a database connection to the other database when needing to upload a document, but not certain if that is the most efficient way.
I am wanting to know if there is a way to upload documents (BLOBS) through APEX that is installed on DATABASE A, but store the documents in DATABASE B?
Thanks,
KeishaOk...up front warning...this is a bit klugey but, it does work.
In the APEX database:
Create the table (with the BLOB column) to which you will upload the documentsWe're going to get them to the remote DB but, for reasons that will become apparent shortly, they need to go here first.
In the Remote database:
Create a DB Link to the APEX database.
Create a Materialized View that selects from table with the the BLOB column in the APEX database
In the APEX database:
Create a local synonym that points to the DBMS_REFRESH package in the Remote database. For this example, we'll name the synonym REMOTE_DBMS_REFRESH
Create a PL/SQL procedure that does the following:
Upload the document to the APEX database
Fire the REFRESH method for the MV that you created using REMOTE_DBMS_REFRESH
Remote the data from the APEX database
For whatever reason, the restriction to copy LOB data over the link is by passed when using a Materialized View.
Cheers,

XE: create DB-User in APEX and Monitor Storage???
Hello there,
i am wondering, where some of the features described in the XE 2Day DBA guide are?
For Example, i cannot find the usage monitor or storage tab. I loged in:
WS: system | internal | MyWorkspace
user: system | admin | Jana
PW: ***** | ***** | *****
but nowhere i can find the storage tab or usage monitor described here:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/admin.102/b25107/storage.htm#BABEDCEF
I also cannot create DB-User (NOT APEX user) how it is described here
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/admin.102/b25107/users_secure.htm#CHDDCIGA
because i can't find the right page "Manage Database users". there is no such register-tab
what i am doing wrong? Have no more idea. isn't that available in apex 3.0.1?
Using Oracle XE and Apex 3.0.1
Thank you for help!!!!If you're using Apex 3.0.1 with Oracle XE then those things simply are not there. This is clearly explained in the documentation that describes installation of Apex 3.0.1 on Oracle XE.
If you want to see/use the storage monitoring for Oracle XE you would need to revert back to the standard Apex 2.1 installation, which I'm not sure is possible. It probably is, but I've never tried to do it, so can't answer definitively.

Is there a way to create a database with Test Stand?
Anyone know of a way to have Test Stand create a database? My company standard MS Office suite is Microsoft Access 2010, and TestStand does not support the .accmdb extension type(format), so I have to create new databases using old formats. I'm worried about backwards compatability down the road since good ole Microsoft doesn't seem to care about legacy formats.
I'm still a beginner with databasing, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.TestStand 2012 SP1, and we are using a modified Generic Recordset (NI). The problem we are having right now is that the Build SQL instructions are not creating the database tables the way we are configuring them from the "Statements" and "Column/Parameters" tabs under Database Options.
What is happening is when we validate the schema, and drop all schema tables, it empties all the database tables, but then when you build using the TestStand generated sql file, we get errors(shown below) we are not understanding, and we can no longer write to the database and LabVIEW throws a "Data type mismatch in criteria expression" error like this
"Possible reason(s):
ADO Error: 0x80040E07

Request time out when creating content database
Hello,
my problem is, that i cannot create a SharePoint content database via the central administration.
My Setup is the following:
SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise Farm
1x Applikation Server/WFE (Windows Server 2012 SP 1)
1x Database Server MSSQL Server 2012 (Windows Server 2012 SP 1)
1x TFS 2013 (Windows Server 2012 SP 1)
all of them are hosted in the same Hyper-V Environment. It is not the fasted Hyper-V Environment existing on planet earth.
The weirdest part of the problem is, i am able to create a content database via powershell.
I am running in some kind of time out issue related to the IIS and CA of that Applikation Server.
Here is the ULS Log from the failling content database creation via CA

The fact that i am able to create a content database through powershell sorts out permissions problems. I am certain of that because the w3wp.exe and the powershell.exe used for both creations were run under the same user.
The timeout always happens aroud 120 seconds after i started the creation. The creation via powershell takes about 3,5 minutes.
Here for the folks that ask me, why i haven't asked google or bing or some other search engine.
I tried the solutions suggested here
http://www.sharepointpals.com/post/Error-while-Creating-Web-Application-through-Central-Administration , here
http://anthonyspiteri.net/sharepoint-2010-web-ui-timeout-creating-web-application-quick-fix/ and here
http://blogs.ibs.com/Duane.Odum/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=33
which i thought pointed me to the right solution.
But those post unfortunatly didnt worked out.
I also tried to alter the web.config files (i know that isn't recommended or supported, but it didn't change anything so those are back to normal as well)
So here are my question:
Can you guys help me solve this issue?
Are there any other places where timeouts can be managed or defined?
P.S.: I am new to using this forum. so pls don't crucify me for doing a mistake.
P.S.S: My english is very poor also :D
With best regards
SimonBe careful with settings like these because there may be a much deeper issue at hand. I have had an issue with a customer that manifests itself as a timeout on a site collection. It was very hard to track since it didn't happen frequently. We engaged Microsoft
Support to find out the root cause but all they could point at is a general network issue that pertains to authentication. After digging deeper, we found out that the network issue was caused by a saturated network connectivity to the domain controller that
impacts a site collection when the database is making an authentication call. Keep this solution as more of a quick fix but be sure to conduct a deeper investigation of the real root cause

Sharepoint server 2013 configuration issue - failed to create configuration database
Hi All,
I have installed the SharePoint server 2013. After installing the SharePoint products, the configuration stops at failure of creating configuration database.
Some system configuration & info:
- 1 Domain controller server run Active Directory services on Windows server 2008 R2 SP1 (PC1 with name DC.Brainfiniti.com)
- 1 Server which is used for installing Sharepoint server 2013 and MS SQL server 2008 R2 SP1 (PC2 with name App.Brainfiniti.com)
- All of PCs were satisfied the requirement of Sharepoint server 2013
- Firewall turned off & No antivirus tool was installed.
- During installing of Sharepoint, choose "Complete" option: Farm mode and use SQL Server instead of SQL Express.
- During configuration, created a new farm with a domain user account.
- Use domain account to log on and install, configure in Sharepoint & SQL server (PC2)
ATTEMPTS:
1. Tried install and set up all of steps with just 1 account - domain administrator.
2. Tried with separate domain account:
- SQL Service account use for:
+ Install SQL server 2008
+ Connect all SQL services
+ Admin for SQL server
- Setup account use for:
+ Member of local administrator group in PC2
+ Install Sharepoint
+ Run Configuration wizard
+ Was granted permission in SQL database: dbcreator, securityadmin, sysadmin and deselect serveradmin role.
+ Was choose for the database account in configuration database step
Also tried with SQL service account in this step.
3. Tried with Standalone mode for Sharepoint installing
4. Trie with domain name: Brainfiniti.local
5. Tried with some another solution from topic relate to database configuration in our community but not successful.
But all attempts are failed at this configuration database step :'(
Please correct me if I am going wrong by missing something or do I need to start/install some services.

Sorry! Cannot add screenshot because my account is still not verified. Will add later.

How to create a database for sample code from Tutorial/Book?
I want to try out the sample code from [http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920013471.do] for the book SQL Pocket Guide 3rd Ed.
I have downloaded the oracle vm/appliance for oracle 11g2 and I have started sqlplus as sysdba.
I'm feeling overwhelmed with these links describing how to create a database:
(1) What is the command to list the existing databases?
(2) What is the command to delete an existing database?
(3) When creating a new database with the create database command, is it necessary to specify the logfile, character set, national character set, datafile, sysaux datafile, undo tablespace, temp table space? Do these have reasonable defaults? I'm not sure what proper directories are to specify for Linux and the examples are for windows.
Can someone give me a simplified create database command to create a database called 3rdEdPocketGuide? Should I follow the example at [http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Oracle-7-HOWTO-3.html] and instead of orcl use 3rdEdPocketGuide?
(4) What command do I use to execute the script that comes with the book SQL Pocket Guide 3rd Ed? This is the script that has all the drop table, create table and insert commands in it.
(5) What command do I use in sqlplus to set the current default database prior to running this script? Perhaps this is the connect command? I don't want my script to create tables in the system database.
(6) I tried the command "connect 3rdEdPocketGuide" and it prompted for a password! Yikes! What password? Do I need to specify a password when I create a database? I cannot tell if I have successfully created such a database or it is just prompting me for a password to thwart malicious users. Is it is possible to create databases which don't require a password or maybe a zero length password?
Thanks
Siegfried

Paul,
Thanks! I tried changing my profile name to siegfried but I'm not seeing the change...
Anyway, I'm trying your suggestion to use SQL Developer which was already installed in the virtual box appliance and I cannot figure out how to get a connection.
When I use the defaults of sid=xe, port=1521, hostname=localhost and specify
username=sysdba
password=
I get status: failure - test failed: listener refursed connection with the following error: ORA 12505, TNS: listener does not current know of sid given.
So I try sid=orcl and that works better: status: failure - test failed: ORA-01017: invalid username/passowrd; login denied
OK, sqlplus let me in with out a password, why does not this work?
So I try checking the box for "OS Authentication" and I get the same error!
Hoek: I tried searching the documentation and found "3 Exploring Oracle Database with SQL Developer" at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e10766/toc.htm but following those directions did not help. Can you be more specific? The directions were for a tutorial and I need to know what the passwords are for the database set up with [http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/databaseappdev-vm-161299.html|http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/databaseappdev-vm-161299.html] . Everyone:
Do I need to create a user using SQL*Plus first so I can login with "Oracle SQL Developer" so I create my database called? What would be the "create user" command I would execute?
OK, so I run sqlplus and issue these commands
create user siegfried identified by abc ;
grant connect to siegfried ;
connect siegfried/abc;
Now, how do I create a database? In Microsoft SQL Server one has to create a database first and if you just start creating tables without creating a database first, the tables will be created in the system database and this is usually undesirable.
Sometimes a database is known in the java connection string as the catalog. Is there any such analog in oracle SQL plus?
So now what do I do? I want to create a bunch of tables using my script I downloaded from 3rd Ed SQL Pocket Guide. Does my new user "siegfried" have the right to create tables? I guess I could try but I don't want to create tables in the system database.
I noticed I can also use "Oracle SQL Developer" to connect with my new "siegfried" account. It seems that I should have been able to connect with sysdba... strange.
So now I am connected in the "Oracle SQL Developer" and I see no list of databases.
Thanks!

Unable to create mail database
okay, I had 4 hard drives fail at once on my Storage Server,
Lost the VHD for my Exchange VM
Created a new VM, recovered Exchange 2010 SP3 using setup /m:recoverserver
Didn't appear to have any errors until it was time to mount the database, database wouldn't mount.
Tried to create a new database, getting Error 5000.
When I looked under Exchange\V14\mailbox, I can't actually find a copy of my mail database, so, I am not able to mount because I can't actually create a good mail database.
When I try to create a mail database, I get these errors
