Creating iPhone tutorial videos?

It would be good to back up my app with a tutorial video or videos on YouTube.
Has anyone any experience of doing this?
For the present application, I think an approach that captures the screen (possibly from the Simulator) would be clearer than simply pointing a video camera at a real live device. But I'd like to know what other people have tried.

If you do use a video camera make sure you set it to manual exposure and then adjust the exposure so nothing is blowing out on the screen. This will ensure that the screen display remains consistent throughout the video no matter what (finger entering the frame to touch the screen, views changing, etc.).
Also, if you have the ability to run an external sound input into your camera and you're not doing a verbal commentary then connect the headphone jack on the iPhone directly to the camera (you can get a cable that allows you to do so from most electronic stores). This will make a HUGE difference in sound quality. (If you are doing a commentary then get as close to the camera's mic as possible.)
Finally, the way you encode the video before uploading it to YouTube can make a big difference as well. Google for tips on settings to use and also look for software like VisualHub that makes the job easier. For example:

  • How To: Use FCPX to create iPhone Portrait Movies (and other non-standard formats)

    Goal: Use Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7 to produce a 640x1136 video (iPhone 5 Portrait). You can use these same steps to produce virtually any dimensions you want. My example is for the iPhone 5, in Portrait mode.
    This information is available in various places, but you have to realy work to find it, so I thought I'd post a step-by-step guide here.
    By the way, you might think you could just create a FCPX Project with your desired dimensions, but you can't (at least with 10.0.7). Projects only support certainly dimensions. But there are other ways, as the rest of this post describes:
    1) Create an initial movie with the desired dimensions, to serve as a template. We'll call it "Template.mov". The only thing that matters is the dimensions. It can be in any codec FCPX understands, and virtually any length.
    I'm using a 2 second video shot on my iPhone for the template. You could also create a blank image (.png, whatever) with the proper dimensions, copy and paste it into a new Quick Time Pro 7 window, and Export it using custom settings. There's lots of different ways to do this.
    2) Drop Template.mov into a FCPX event.
    3) Select Template.mov in the Event browser, and select File->Duplicate (or command-D). You probably could just edit "Template.mov", but it's a good idea to save it for reuse.
    3) Change the name of the copied video. I'm using "iPhone Video".
    4) Right-click "iPhone Video" and select "Open in Timeline".
    5) If you made the Template video from a still image, you may need to change the duration (ctrl+D). You don't have to make it very long, but it needs to be longer than 1 frame. A few seconds should be enough.
    6) Use this timeline like you'd use a project's timeline. Drop in new content, trim, transition, etc. There may be things you can't do in it, but I haven't found any yet. I'm guessing Chapters may not work, but I haven't tried them.
    7) Note that when you drop new content into the timeline, it may size funny. That's because the default setting for "Spacial Conform" is "Fit". Simply select the newly-dropped content, and in the Video settings inspector, scroll down to "Spacial Conform" and change it. You could use "Fill", which fills the frame vertically, or "None", which uses the source's original height. Then crop/transform/whatever to get what you want.
    8) When you're ready to render, select "iPhone Video" in the Event browser, then use the "Share" button. You want to use the "Export File" destination, which you may have to add. Pick your codec, and let 'er rip.
    9) When the rendering is done, you should have a video in your desired dimensions.
    That's all there is to it. Hope this helps someone.

    PS: Don't ask why someone would want to create an iPod video using FCPX. The point is that you may need to create a video with non-standard  dimensions at some point in time, and this is how to do it.
    PPS: Most of this information came from http://library.creativecow.net/articles/payton_t/FCPX_Custom-Resolution-Timeline s/video-tutorial. I just wrote it down, while I tried to do what the video suggested.

    Instructions for using QuickTime Pro 7 to create a template video with unusual dimensions.
    I suspect that anyone savy enough to be using FCPX has probably already figured out how to do this, either using my technique or another, so there probably isn't a real need for me to post this. For that matter, I may be the only person who cares about this at all. However, while I was trying to learn how to do all of this, I would have really appreciated having all the information in one place, so here goes.
    If you want to create a video with unusual dimensions (like 640x1136) using my steps above, you'll need a "template" video first. Here's an easy way to create one, using any image editor, and QuickTime Pro 7.
    1) Open QuickTime Pro 7 (QTP for short).
    2) From the menu, select File->New Player. You'll get a window with just the bottom portion of the player, i.e. the playback controls.
    3) Using an image editor, create a still image in the desired dimensions. You can use any image editor. It doesn't matter what the image contains (although it will end up showing as a thumbnail in FCPX).
    4) Copy the image to the clipboard.
    5) Switch back to QTP, and paste the image into the new player. Don't worry that there isn't a video window showing - just paste it into the window that has only playback controls. As soon as you do, the video window appears.
    6) Advance to the end of the movie (the short, 1-frame movie), then hold down Command+V (paste) and keep holding it down to paste multiple images in. Watch the time advance. You could, if you want, just hold down Command+V until you get the length you want. But if you want a long video, there's an easier way:
    7) When you reach a few seconds (or whatever duration your patience allows), select all (Command+A) and copy (Command+C). Then hold down Command+V to keep pasting in the longer clips. Wait until you reach a longer duration, then repeat the process. So, for example, 1 second, then 10 seconds, then 1 minute, then 10 minutes, then 1 hour. Or whatever you want.
    8) Save the video however you want. I usually use File->Export with H.264, with Quality set to "Least". Just make sure you don't let it change the dimensions. If you resized the player window, depending on which "save" or "export" method you've chosen, it might default to the resized dimensions, so double check that to make sure.
    That's it. You now have a template video you can use with my previous post(s).

  • Can anyone point me toward a tutorial/video/anything that will show me how to use iMovie '11?

    The Apple video tutorial was just a commercial. Other info I found on Apple site was for the iPad. I have a MacBook Pro. I need to learn how to use iMovie '11 from the start. Very start. To borrow a line from a movie 'Talk to me like I'm a 5-year-old.' For example, what is the difference between a 'project' and an 'event'? Which one do I create first?  How do I adjust the exposure and color on my movies? Once I am done with my movie how do I tell computer/software to 'save' it because I am done. Then where is it? These are just examples.
    I'd love to find any basic tutorial/video/help.
    I got a book but it's way too advanced.
    Thank you.

  • Making tutorial videos

    I'm very new to many if these techniques but I want to make tutorial videos.  Can I record directly into my laptop, or do I have to use another device (such as iPhone or iPad) and import it?
    If I have to use another device, why do I have a camera in my laptop?
    Thanks

    Hi LLSeattle,
    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
    It sounds like you would like to create video directly from your Mac. If this is the case, you may want to consider using QuickTime Player to record your video. Please review the attached article for information on how to create video with QuickTime Player.

  • URGENT help needed in creating external xml video plalist. Please help!

    I was given an assignment to  create and external video playlist using an xml file.  I have never used  flash before, know nothing about encoding and all that was given to the  class in terms of instuctions was a short tutorial that has no  resources for troubleshooting.  We were given everything; the external  playlist file equipped with the video skin, the video list, actionscript  that loads the xml and the xml file.  We were told that all we need to  do is change the names of the videos in the xml file to match the names  of our videos.  I did that.  We were also told we needed to "name  target", but we were not informed on how to do this.  I have tried  everything, visited every tutorial and I cannot figure out how to get  this damn thing to work.  I cannot even get flash to load the xml file.  PLEASE HELP.
    Here is the xml file:
    <?xml version = "1.0" encoding = "i-8859-1"?>
    <playlist>
    <ADogWithoutABone
    flvurl="ADogWithoutABone.flv"
    desc="Hyper Wall First Video" />
    <Highway
    flvurl="Highway.flv"
    desc="Hyper Wall Second Video" />
    <PsychoBabble
    flvurl="PsychoBabble.flv"
    desc="Hyper Wall Third Video" />
    <SomethingElse
    flvurl="SomethingElse.flv"
    desc="Hyper Wall Fourth Video" />
    </playlist>
    I tried putting in the entire address of the file location, but it did nothing.
    Here is the actionscript in the flash file:
    var xmlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    xmlLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, xmlLoaded);
    xmlLoader.load(new URLRequest("playlistXML.xml"));
    function xmlLoaded(event:Event):void {
    var playlistXML:XML = new XML(event.target.data);
    var item:XML;
    for each(item in playlistXML.videoname) {
    trace("item: "+item.attribute("flvurl").toXMLString());
    myPlayList.addItem({label:item.attribute("desc").toXMLString(), data:item.attribute("flvurl").toXMLString()});
    //Select the first video
    myPlayList.selectedIndex = 0;
    //And automatically play it
    myPlayScreen.play(myPlayList.selectedItem.data);
    //Add a listener to detect when new video is selected and play it
    function listListener(event:Event) {
    myPlayScreen.play(event.target.selectedItem.data);
    myPlayList.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE, listListener);
    I  tried placing the full address of the xml file in, along with the file  address of the videos, but again it did nothing.  Everything is located  in the same file, and the videos in a sub file in that file. I tried  taking out the sub file and putting all the videos in the same file, but  it did nothing.  I am sure it's something very simple, but like I said I  have NO experience with this whatsoever. I am SO lost and DESPERATELY  need help. PLEASE someone SAVE MEEEE!
    Thanks

    It might be a crossdomain.xml problem.
    Please make sure that the server hosting the xml allows the domain where the swf is hosted.
    You can start with:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
    <cross-domain-policy>
        <allow-access-from domain="*"/>
        <site-control permitted-cross-domain-policies="master-only"/>

    There are some excellent, free written tutorials right here that get into DW depth. But I caution you, to be successful with DW you'll need to learn basic HTML and CSS code first.  Once you've got that under your belt, DW is a piece of cake to work with.

  • Cinestyle Colour Profile For iPhone 6 Video

    Hi !
    I'm a pro photographer and just started playing with the iPhone 6 video ... it's amazing.
    However, I find the colours and contrast too punchy and severe - so the video files it creates are not great to edit and grade in Final Cut Pro X.
    Does anyone know if it's possible to use a 'Technicolor Cinestyle' type colour profile in the phone when shooting to change the look ?
    If not, is there any way to increase the dynamic range and lower contrast ? Or is there any video app that would do this whilst shooting ?
    Bit of a long shot i know, but any thoughts would be helpful ...
    Thanks !

    You can post a video to YouTube, but I don't think it's necessary. I believe you.
    I found only one other recent post like yours and it has no responses: After iOS 8, no sound when playing video taken from the back camera..
    Just curious if you have the same problem using the front and back camera when recording?
    I don't think it's a universal issue so you might try another reset. Other than that, I think a restore would be the next step. Could be that your installation got flubbed.

  • Efficient compression of iPhone 6  videos

    Photos for Mac + iCloud Photos has significantly improved my photography workflow: It is now much easier to keep all of my family photos and videos organized (side bar: favorite smart album is album = none). With 140GB in my photo library already though (on the 200GB plan), I try to save space where I can. Compressing my iPhone 6+ videos is one area that I hope to improve upon. I usually record in 30fps on the phone and use Compressor's Apple Device (Best Quality) export/transcode option to convert the videos. The process is slightly combersome though: (1) export the video from Photos for Mac; (2) compress the video with Compressor; (3) add it back to Photos for Mac; and (4) finally correct the EXIF date/time manually. Does anyone have a more efficient workflow to accomplish this objective (possibly using Automator)? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, ~Jim.

    Russ,
    I store all of my videos in iCloud and then sync across my various Apple devices. If / when I edit a specific event (e.g. multiple video segments of my son's birthday party), I use either iMovie on an iOS device or iMovie on my desktop (haven't purchased FCP yet). Once the movie is published and stored in iCloud, I go back and delete the various video segments that were used to create the final movie. Does that make sense?
    In a nutshell, everything is stored in iCloud and synced across my iOS devices and Photos for Mac. I'm sure, eventually I'll run out of online space and be forced to store various videos offline (I'll likely continue using Photos for Mac and simply keep the videos as reference files outside the library)...the goal is to manage the size of the videos efficiently in order to keep all of my photos and videos in iCloud for as long as possible. I manage the size of the videos my using Apple's Compressor. I just wish there was a nose streamlined method of exporting the video from Photos to Mac to Compressor and then back again.

  • Problems watching Adobe tutorial videos

    I want to watch the Adobe video tutorials, but I find that the Adobe videos tutorials stutter and pause to such an extent that it is painful and impossible to watch. I don't have this problem with watching other videos on my machine.  (From Lynda.com, for example.)  It only occurs with Adobe videos.  Is there some setting that needs to be changed?  Can you help me?

    Hi Dave,
    By the way.... In going to the video, in order to give you the link, I
    discovered that the videos are playing better now.  I don't know whether,
    because I tried to watch them before, some of the files are downloaded onto my
    hard drive already, or whether the tutorials have been done in a different
    way,  since the last time I tried.  Before I would have rated them on a
    "painful  to watch" scale of 1-10 as a 9 to 12.  I currently rate them as a 3 or
    a  4.  (Watchable.)  In fact, I watched the entire tutorial, and found it
    very helpful.  (Though I still think that maybe more tweaking of the
    encoding might make things even easier.  I don't seem to have  this problem with
    watching the videos from Lynda.com.
    Thanks for answering my post!!  If you have some suggestions on  anything I
    can do to my own settings to make these videos play better, please  let me
    know.

  • Creating interactive tutorial content - Is Director the most suitable program to learn?

    I have no experience using Adobe Director. I have just downloaded the trial version and had a look at a handful of tutorial videos. Before I get stuck in with it, I would appreciate advice on whether Director is suitable for my intended purposes:
    I want to start making English language learning content and want to learn one or two programs for creating programs for online/apps,etc... I need to start learning something that I can start using quickly to create programs/internet pages/apps to create educational content with video, audio. Is Director the right choice?
    A typical 'lesson' might consist of the following: A short video clip of real life or TV/film entertainment followed by interactive exercises / games for whatever area of language focus is chosen for the lesson. I imagine I would need to prepare my video outside the program first - chopping up the clips I want to use - perhaps chopping short clips e.g. one sentence phrases, and then perhaps extracting out the audio and using just that in various ways.  I would want to add my own text and so on. I would obviously have to start out fairly basic but I want a program that can be expanded on as much as possible. For example, the ability to make the program store correct/incorrect responses and react accordingly - repeating content that students have not yet mastered, perhaps also creating audio clips... Would something like recording of student spoken performance also be possible - and at a stretch, bringing in voice recognition?? That would be way down the line - at the outset I would be happy with something that is more or less like a lesson - presentation with video as my main content, followed by a handful of interactive exercises.
    At this stage I would focus on just one medium e.g. basic web page materials for my personal students to access for homework - but in future have the ability to transfer the lesson content to multimedia educational/games if that's possible.
    I see there is a whole suite of Adobe products to choose from. Do I need to learn a handful of these, if so which? Also there is the issue of cost as at the outset I would be using this just for learning purposes and to use with my own students. I highly doubt my company would be willing to pay for the programs / subscription - at least until I have spent enough time creating content to get some decent useful results and for them to see the value in it. So I would be on my own at the outset in terms of putting the time in and paying to use the software.
    I am aware that my questions may be extremely broad, perhaps not easy to answer succinctly - but any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated - even if it's just to let me know that I am on the right track in guessing that Director will do the job. Suggestions for other programs that I could look at either as alternatives, or for use in conjunction with Director (what about Flash??).
    It seems a massive program and I will need to learn a basic subset of tools within the program to get me started, so any guidance on narrowing down what I need to focus on would be a great help.
    Any help/suggestions are very welcome

    The answer is absolutely no to your question, "Is Director the most suitable program to learn?".
    Director is a dead technology. Do not waste hundreds of hours learning it. Also forget Flash. It's going away. I would not waste time learning that either.
    I suggest learning HTML5 & JavaScript. Obviously you can develop interactive multimedia for the web with these, but increasingly IDEs and frameworks are being developed that use these two languages; enabling you to write once and export to multiple platforms.

  • Creating a Flash Video Slideshow

    I was wondering if there was a tutorial somewhere on how to create a flash video slideshow similar to this website: http://slideshowpro.net/video/slideshowpro_for_flash#num=891929&id=album-42765 . Frankly, I don't even know if that's the correct term for it. The idea is to have one skin (Flash Player) on the site that plays videos with a list of various videos to choose from below. Furthermore, it should play it like switching channel on a TV, like on the site above, not like on YouTube or Metacafe (where a new page opens up with the video). This would be kind of like switching channels on a TV. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
