Creating PDFs for Newspaper Ads?

I'm using InDesign CS5 to create several ads that will be printed in black and white in my client's local newspaper. Each ad includes a grayscale photo. Per the newspaper's instructions, I've done all of my color correction in Photoshop and I'm using the PDF Preset they sent me, which outputs the color to a US Newspaper (NSAP 2007) profile. The ONLY problem I'm having is whenever I open the PDF created with this Preset the ad looks brown. Why is that happening?
Also, should I be setting the color profile in Photoshop as well?
Thanks!

Newsprint is a case where ID's different ways of handling grayscale become more obvious. Modern CMYK profiles can profile the black ink color, which would never be absolute black on press. Not only will a CMYK profile show 0|0|0|100 as a lighter value than absolute black, it might also show the black ink as having some "color". So when the 100% black ink patch is measured for the profile its "color" might not measure as neutral, which I think is the case with newsprint.
If you duplicate an ID doc and assign SNAP to one and the default SWOP to the other, and turn on Overprint/Sep Preview you will get a preview of the two black ink colors:
What further complicates things is, in Photoshop grayscale profiles don't return the more accurate black ink "color" preview. 100% grayscale blacks always preview as absolute black (0|0|0 RGB), which won't in fact happen on press and with newprint the effect will be more obvious.

  • RoboHelp9 HTML Trial does not show images in Create PDF for Review

When I do Create PDF for Review, the pdf shows only the gray rectangular placeholders for our logo and another image at the top of each pages instead of the actual pictures.  Is this a bug or it is supposed to work like that?
Just in case this has anything to do with it:
Some of RH's PDF Creator Add-in X features did not work on my new Win7, 64-bit, Office2010 machine, and said I couldn't then install my Adobe Standard 7.0 CD because "you have a better product installed".  The techs got on my machine for 2 1/2 hrs. and couldn't get it to write pdf via Printed Documentation and were going to try to re-create it in their lab.  A week later I uninstalled RH's PDF Creator Add-in X and installed my Standard 7.0 and I can now do Printed Documentation to pdf.  Would this have caused the problem in first sentence?

I cannot be sure but I would say it is highly likely. PDF Review is designed to work with Acrobat 9 or X. I know Word 2010 has some issues with Acrobat 9 so if you are using 7, nothing would surprise me.

  • What settings does the "Create PDF for Review" output use?

    Product: RoboHelp 11 (TCS 5)
Menu location: Review > Create PDF for Review
Issue: The default output from the menu location results in output that is unusable: e.g., styles aren't mapping correctly, making the document difficult to read and review. Is there a default print layout or some other control available?
Ultimate objectives: Track changes, perform shared reviews, import comments from the generated PDF, and so forth.
Secondary questions: Can I import comments/markup from a shared review if I generated the PDF using the print layout, instead of the Review > Create PDF for Review menu option? If so, will I then be able to manage comments from the Review pane and perform other related-reviewing functions?

I believe it maps via CSS. I don't believe you can change this behaviour.
If you generate printed documentation, it is NOT possible to import the review comments.
    Kind regards,

  • Creating PDFs for viewing on screen

    Hi guys,
I have had a problem recently when I have created PDFs from InDesign. I have outlined the text, and created the PDF. It previews fine on my Mac, but when I send it to a client who is using a PC they notice that certain letters (eg. 'l') appear bold. This is not in the original file. I have had this problem with Illustrator aswell. One work round that I notice was that instead of outputting at 72dpi (Mac screen resolution), I have outputted at 96dpi (PC screen resolution). However, this increases the file size.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
    Thanks

Outlining the fonts is your problem. The text loses it's hinting, which is the "artificial intelligence" built into fonts, without hinting the information will grow by pixel depending on where it falls on the grid - making it as simple as I can, that's why it looks bolder and it is actually bolder.
Don't outline your fonts, it makes the file size larger for one thing.
When you make a PDF, File>EXPORT> from InDesign you can choose a Subset of fonts. A subset is usually 100%, which will only embed the glyphs used within the document. If you set this to 0% it will embed all the glyphs within the font into the document whether you used it or not. This can increase the final size of the pdf too (just the 0% option). But leaving the text as text without outlining will significantly reduce your file size.
As already said the font will be embeded in the PDF so your client will be able to view the PDF without any problems, any print vendor worth their salt should be able to handle a PDF with embedded fonts.
But the font appears bolder because it actually is bolder when outlined. And some characters can lose their natural shape as a result of outlining.
It is perfectly fine to outline fonts if you have no other choice, licence restirctions sometimes don't allow fonts to embedded, for example. Other occasions would be the instance of creativity with a piece of text where you want to elongate a tail of a letter or something for artistic purposes.
But for genreal text, there is no need to outline.

  • When creating a lot of pdf's from Word my computer opens every created pdf for viewing? How do I remove this property from use

Have to create a lot of pdf's in the future, so this property is quite annoying. Is it removable ?

    Using Adobe Acrobat Professional
Converting a lot of Word.docx to pdf. And each time the system shows me the resulting pdf to view. It is annoying but not critical to my work. Is there a place in the Adobe Acrobat Pro preferences or some other place to remove this.
I am using the right mouse button to create the pdf.

  • Creating PDFs for Double Sided Printing Problem

I'm not having trouble printing, but with generating a pdf that will print double sided correctly. Currently I have a pdf with many invoices on it. Some are an odd number of pages long and some even. The problem I have is if I don't insert a blank page to the invoices with an odd number of pages (to make it even), then the next invoice's 1st page will be on the back of the previous invoice.
    Example:
    Invoice #1 has 3 pages
    Invoice #2 has 4 pages
    Invoice #3 has 2 pages
    After double-siding
    Invoice #1
    Page 1
Front: Page 1 from Invoice 1
Back: Page 2 from Invoice 1
    Page 2
Front: Page 3 from Invoice 1
Back: Page 1 from Invoice 2 <------ This is my issue

    Hi Brian
this is addressed in 5.6.2, you can force and odd or even page to end the document, if you need the extra blank page to finish on a odd page say XMLP will insert it for you. Check the docs, http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25516_11/current/acrobat/115xdoug.zip

  • A part of an image frame is on other page as well, it is misplacing while creating PDF for print

I am working on a design in which there is an image frame box with outline & shadow. This box is continuing from one page to other page as well. (80% on one page & 20% on the other) When I am previrewing it in InDesign Booklet SE, it's showing perfect but when I created new document in that and look at the design that image box is coming only on one page not on the other...I am trying to break the box into two, but the problem is outline...it creates outline on all the 4 sides on both parts of the broken image frame resulting in outline in between the image, which is where the page folds. I don't know how to solve this. Will highly apppreciate any response/ideas. Thanks!

InBooklet SE had some problems with creating new documents and frames that crossed the spine, as you've discovered.
This MIGHT work, though: copy the image and paste in place so you have two copies on top of each other, then crop them in opposite directions to stop at the spine. I surmise you've added a stroke to the frame, so use the direct select tool to select the frame edge along the spine on each one and delete that segment. This will probably be easier to do if you put the images on separate layers so you can hide one while trying to work on the other.

  • The order of topics in the Project Manager is not reflected when creating a PDF for review.

Can't seem to find an answer to this in the forums...
    Using RH10.
In the Project Manager pod is a default 'Project Files' folder.
Within that I have a 'Topics' folder in which my topic files reside.
Under the View menu, I have selected 'By Topic Title'. I understand that this displays the topics by their title as opposed to their file name. I understand that this is a display toggle only, and has no relation to the order of the topics - the alternative toggle is 'By File Name'.
Notice in the image below, my topics are displayed by topic title, but aren't in alphabetical order. ...yet.
There's a button at the top of this window for changing the sort order to 'Sort by Name', which has the result below.
Ok, so now the topics are displayed by topic title, and in alphabetical order.
Question 1: If that button toggles the view to display topics in 'alphabetical order', what on earth is the other order called? It's certainly not in order of file name, as I've checked a bunch of the topic filenames, and can't see any pattern/order to the this structure.
Question 2: When I go to create a PDF for review (via Review > Create PDF for Review), the window that appears displays all the topics available to me to select for review. However, they're displayed in this other 'odd' sort order instead of 'alphabetical' order. The Help menu says that this window reflects the order of topics as it finds them in the Project Manager. However, what seems to be actually happening is it's displaying the topics based on the view you have selected under the View menu (i.e. either 'View by Topic Title' or 'View by File Name'), and regardless of which view toggle you have selected, the order of the topics is only ever this 'odd' sort order. In other words, in the 'Create PDF for Review' window, it appears I can never see the topic list in alphabetical order. Furthermore, it appears that the only way I can resolve this is to go back into the Project Manager, switch to 'odd' sort order, and manually drag all the topics into alphabetical order. ...I have hundreds of topics.
Is there some way I can quickly change this 'odd' sort order to 'alphabetical'? There must be some underlying file with this order of topics in it (hopefully).

    Hi there
I don't have an immediate answer for Question 2, but for Question 1, the topic order is "User Defined" as you are able to click and drag topics to create any arrangement that suits you. This was something added as a result of user feedback. Enough users asked Adobe to allow them to arrange topics this way that they made it a reality. The logic escapes me as I'm a user that normally expects software to list things in either ascending or descending alphabetical order.
Perhaps Peter will pop in with a nice explanation of the PDF for Review sorting and Adobe's logic behind it.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Creating PDFs from BDC for VL01N

    Hi,
I've to create PDFs for the deliveries which are being created in a BDC program. With some setting in config (which I'm unaware about,) as soon as the delivery is created, the output gets printed. I need to download the print preview at the same time at the desktop in PDF format. (The BDC program uses CALL TRANSACTION  'VL01N').
Can you please help me knowing how can I fetch the spool no in this case to feed it to the FM used to convert the data into PDF from spool no?
    Thanks.

  • How do you create a pdf for client approval?

Do any of you create pdfs for approval from you InDesign docs? We have to put our work through an approval system in pdf format and I can't think of how to do this with things like scrollable frames and popups.
    Any ideas would be great.
    Cheers
    Graeme

    Thanks Bob,
I've just tried that out, not perfect but definitely a great idea. Scrolling text will still be a bit painfull but I think we can live with that.
I'll have to try it again at work with a faster WIFI as it was a bit slow on mine here.

I use Acrobat to create pdfs for my classes. This session, many of my students can not open the pdfs that I created with Acrobat 9. This is especially true of students with older Operating systems and older versions of reader. Is there a way that I can create pdfs in Acrobat 9 that these older readers can open?

You should be able to set the backward compatibility in the Adobe PDF printer. There is a setting for the version there.

How do I enable these add-ons?

    Thanks Bill,
Yes, the plug-ins are there in "Manage Add-Ons>Toolbars and Extensions."  But, when I select any of the three Add-ons for Adobe Acrobat, the view that follows has the "enabled" and "disabled" buttons grayed out. No matter how many times I select enable, the add-ons remain disabled.
I think the add-ons only work for 32 bit Internet Explorer, not the 64 bit Internet Explorer, or maybe not even for Windows 8 64 bit.
