Crystal Reports Version to Work With Vb 6 and VS 2008

Hi,
We have some legacy VB 6 applications which are too large to port over to Visual Studio which use Crystal 7.0
Recently at one site there have been problems with another application which uses a new version of Crystal. Either one or the other will work but not both. This might be solved by ugrading to Crystal XI R2 ( I believe that newer versions can run side by side). However, we also have new projects starting that are to be developed in VS 2008. As I understand it, Crystal XI R2 will not work with VS 2008 and CR 2008 will not work with VB 6.
We really donlt want to have to buy both versions !!
Anyone got any ideas ?
Many Thanks
Paul

CR 7 did not support side-by-side installs. Likely what is happening is the your app and the other app is loading crpe32.dll from the \windows\system32 folder. Which obviously will not support each other. This is the only dll that is common among all versions of CR, see below for more info, and that due to it's location can cause issues like this. Newer versions from 8.5 do version checking and athough the dll's have the same name XI R2 will not load other versions, there are exceptions. The exceptions are UFL and some legacy database drivers that will work in any and all versions.
A few possible work arounds, in your app do version checking when loading crpe32.dll or specifically if crpe32 is residing in a memory space that some other app has loaded it and Windows will share, check the version of the dll and if in your case it's not 11.5.x.x. then pop up a message indicating they must close the other Crystal app before continuing.
Move all the runtime files into the applications startup folder, what's specified in the Icon on the your desktop or short cut. Moving them there may fix this, we start looking for our runtime where your EXE is located and then in the working Folder, then in the \system32 folder and finally down the PATH statement. We also have hard coded specific location in our load methods. In this case you may have to rename the \windows\crystal folder from the CR 7 install. But I don't recall if this will break the CR 7 app.
Also if you are moving the version 7 runtime or the other app it may break that application so make note what you did so you can restore it. Also highly suggested to back up everything and test this on a test machine before applying to the production PC's.
You can use tools like Filemon and modules from our site. You can get filemon from www.sysinternals.com.
Other than that it will not likely work due to 7 not supporting side-by-side and will load anything it finds. And of course, Don't support or install both versions of software on the same PC.

  • Crystal Reports has stopped working with Windows 7 and demo database

I'm trying to get back up to speed on Crystal Reports after 10 years away. I'm running Crystal Reports 2008 Standard with the just-released Service Pack 3 (same symptom with SP2).
So I downloaded the demo database and tried creating a new report. No problems creating a simple customer list. When I add the Orders table and link the CustomerID columns and then add the OrderDate column to the report, everything works fine. But as soon as I add the OrderID or OrderDate column, the application crashes.
Culprit seems to be MSVCR80.dll. Here's the log:

    Hello,
It may be that something was "fixed" and our default xml file falls out of the Standards now.
Are you wanting to connect to SQL or XML?
Go to Microsoft's site and search for C++ distribution and download and install the recommended one for windows 7. It may be that part is corrupt or our installer thinks it is there. Try doing a Repair install and custom options to select all of the DB drivers and exports types to see if that resolves the issue.

  • Crystal Reports SAPToolbar should work with BEx 7.x without needing BEx3.5

    Hello,
first I would like to begin with the used versions in our landscape:
    Clients:
    - Windows 7
    - Crystal Reports 2008 SP3 FP3.3
    - SAP 7.20 Patchlevel 9
    - Bex 7.x SP5
    Servers:
    - BOE XI 3.1 SP FP 3.3
    - BW 7.01 SP5
Our problem is that the SAPToolbar in Crystal Reports requires Bex 3.5 and doesn't accept Bex 7.x. The start aborts with the following message:
COM exception caught in CExtToolBar::GetRemoteFileCookie(). HR = 0x80004005
COM exception caught in CExtToolBar::InitOpenSaveDialog(). HR = 0x80004005
You are connecting to BW server version < 702, please install BEx3.5 to use SAP Toolbar functionality.
Since the installation of SAPGUI 7.20, due to the fact that SAPGUI 7.10 is out of maintenance, BEx 3.5 is delivered as separately installable package and therefore not installed with SAPGUI 7.20. Further please note that full PAM support of BEx 3.5 cannot be granted by SAP - as Microsoft has removed, e.g., support for some components within Windows 7 that had been used by BEx Web Application Designer 3.5.
For further details please check the notes: 1322923, 1410878, 1424366 and 1391689.
Is there a solution for SAP Toolbar not supporting Bex 7.x? I know that the note 1196843 referencing to this issue and the support of SAP says more or less, that this is known and tracked but can't say when it will be solved. For me it's hard to understand, that BEx 7.x isn't supported.
Do other have the same problems? If yes please vote for the IDEA: https://cw.sdn.sap.com/cw/ideas/8186
    Best Regards,
    Michael Raab

    Hi,
If i'm not mistaken, the 3.5 add-ins are still part of the SAP GUI 720 installer, but they need to be selected (ticked) to be installed.
Unfortunately, Crystal 2008 is considered a legacy tool, and as such, it still uses the old integration points. That add-in is also required for the Dashboard Design (xcelsius) SAP toolbar.

  • Crystal Reports XI R2 SP2 with VB6 on a Server 2008 R2 64-bit machine

Here is a crazy issue.  we have many VB apps that use the CRAXDRT.dll and CRVIEWER.dll to display reports.  All of these work on 32 bit machines.  We have 1 program that is running on one 64-bit machine that receives the error Logon Failed when the viewer pops up.  This same program works great on other 64-bit machines and on 32-bit machines.  Other programs that access the viewer work fine on this 64-bit machine as well.  it's just this one program.  This leads me to believe that it's not a DLL issue or a registry issue.
Things I have tried.  I have used the Modules.exe application but it does not catch the program that is having the issue, it does catch it on a working machine, but not on the broken machine.
I am NOT able to install the SP6 run time dll's because it is a production environment and they will not load 3rd party application installs on the server only our own Install.  (so if there is another way to get these SP6 dlls over there,  that could be something I could try)
This also means they will not install the full crystal XI R2 software either.
    Any suggestions?

One suggestion, but if you can not install SP 6, you may be out of luck; CR XI R2 is not supported on WIN 2008 server - period. Not even with SP 6, but it may, may work (SP 6 does work on WIN 7 and in a nut shell WIN 2008 is not that different). None of the pre SP 6 service packs will work (at least be supported) on WIN 7...
You do not mention how you are connecting to the database, but if it is ODBC, make sure your ODBC datasource is 32 bit, not 64 bit. See KB [1505620|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_bi/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes%7B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333533303335333633323330%7D.do].
If you are using another type of connection (say OLE DB), use the [Modules|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006252802008E/modules.zip] utility to compare the database client files installed on the machine that does not work and one that does work.

  • Can Crystal Report Server Embedded works on windows 2000 and 2008 server?

    To whom maybe concerned,
It seems that CRSE 2008 supports windows 2003 series only from support platform document and windows 2000 sp4 was removed from the support list from this version.
May I know is there potential risk to run it on windows 2000 sp4? Again, How about windows 2008?
    Thanks for your attention.

    Hi Ted,

  • Which is the lowest version of Crystal reports that shall work on BW 7.3?

    Hi,
Can you tell me which is the lowest version of crystal reports that will work with BW 7.3?
If given any reference document also it will be useful.
    Regards,
    Vignesh

Just adding to Vitaly's point that when you load CR 2008 Sp4, you also need to upgrade SAP IK to the same patch level i.e. SP4
You also have to load the respective transports for the service pack that you are loading.

  • Databases that Crystal Reports 9 can function with

    Hi,
We are going to purchase Crystal Reports for the use with a new financial program that we will be purchasing.  The financial program that we will purchase allows report customization within the program if using the Crystal Reports 9 engine.  For that reason we are going to purchase Crystal Reports 9.  Otherwise we would have to create custom reports outside of this program if using a more recent version of Crystal like 2008.
However we need to make sure Crystal Reports will work with our SQL Server 2005 database.  I tried to research a bit on Crystal Reports 9 (of which currently I know nothing about) and came across this document when doing a search https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/202ff507-281f-2b10-78b6-b6bce2668d6b.
We also need Crystal 9.0 to work with Paradox and BDE databases.  It looks like BDE 5.1 and Paradox 8 & 9 are listed as supported platforms.  I also see SQL Server 2000 but do not see SQL Server 2005.  Will Crystal Reports 9.0 work with a SQL Server 2005 database and also what are the plans for Crystal Reports 9.0 working with future versions of SQL like 2008?
    thanks,
    JW

  • Visual Studio 2005/2008 and Crystal Reports versions/upgrade questions.

I've tried posting this question on the MSDN forums and gotten no response.
I've downloaded and installed VS 2008 Beta 2.   The versions on the Crystal Reports files included are 10.5.0.1806
I'm currently using VS 2005, with the included Crystal Reports.  The versions on those files are 10.2.0.xxxx.  I've created an desktop app (in VB) which stores it's data in a database and uses the CR 10 runtime merge modules to generate a report.
I was considering upgrading the Crystal Reports version to XI.  I would like to allow customers to modify my delivered report with their own licensed copy of CR XI.  I am not providing any functionality within my app to create or modify the delivered .rpt or use it outside my application.
    Questions:
Do I need to update the runtime files to CR XI to support rpt files modified with CR XI?  Current runtime files are being delivered with the CR 10 merge module.
I see a Crystal Reports for Visual Studio upgrade to CR XI.
Can I update the merge modules to CR XI and still use the CR for VS2005 for development?
Does it make any sense to update CR for VS 2005?  Or to get the full CR XI Developer edition?  My usage of CR functionality is very limited.
Would there be any benefit to waiting for the release of VS 2008?   How does that change the scenario?
How does Crystal Reports for Visual Studio fit in with the Crystal Reports Lifecycle?  It's not mentioned on Business Objects End of Life Dates page . Crystal 10 has a Patch EOL of 31-Dec-07.   Does this apply to CR for VS 2005?  Where does 10.5 fit in?
My main concern is allowing customers with CR XI to change the format of my delivered .rpt to run with my app.  Adding their company name, logo, etc.   My testing show a CR XI report still works with my current app.  But, going forward, what should I deliver and what do I need to use to continue development?

To use Reports designed in XI, you need to use XI or higher runtime, running them in older versions may work, but you may encounter unforeseen issues doing so.
If you are to use VS2005 for development you need to use XI Release 2 (11.5) runtime.
If you are going to use VS2008 for development you need to use Crystal Reports 2008 with Service Pack 0.
The support end of life for versions of Crystal Reports bundled with Visual Studio are linked to what Microsoft's lifecycle for the product is.  Generally if there is a workaround for the issue that is simple enough, there will not be a patch created.
The changes you are expecting the customer to do can be accomplished with our RAS SDK which is available without using enterprise starting with Crystal Reports XIR2 SP2.

Hi, did you get this working? I'm really struggling to get up and running on 2008 R2, the CMS service just refuses to connect to the database. It also looks like the database wasn't created properly during the install. I set it up on an MSDE database, and when I look at it with sql management studio the database is there but there aren't any tables or anything else
Can anyone either confirm or deny that its possible to run Crystal XI on 2008 R2?
The error I'm getting when trying to start the service is:
The root server reported an error Initialization Failure. (Reason: Unable to connect to the database using the provided connection string. Reason: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified).
I've confirmed that the ODBC connections work (both 32 bit and 64 bit) via the built in test, but Crystal for some reason isn't happy

  • Crystal Reports Version Question

    Hello,
I am developing a web site using vs 2010 and the compatible version as downloaded from here. I have come across a small issue that I'm sure is easily solvable but I can't find any references to it. When I try to run this solution on another machine or server with crystal reports 10 installed I notice that the graphs colours aren't matching to as set in the report. I understand that this is a version issue but without installing vs 2010 and then the crystal report version supported onto another machine. Is there away or an installation just so that the reports work as expected (fo this version without installing vs 2010).
I tried downloading the redist 32 bit version from here and updating the config file accordingly but when I then generate a report I'm getting a database logon failed error.
Note that if I change the webconfig file back to 10.2.3600.0 from the recently changed 13.0.2000.0 then the report works as expected, except the graph colours aren't using the conditional colours.
Am I doing something horribly wrong?
    Cheers,
    John.

I'm not sure I understand the details here - I htink the description gets a bit muddled as it goes. E.g.; this:
I understand that this is a version issue but without installing vs 2010 and then the crystal report version supported onto another machine. Is there away or an installation just so that the reports work as expected (fo this version without installing vs 2010).
is a source of confusion for me(?).
In any case, CRVS2010 and CR 10.2 should be (as far as I know, are) side by side compatible. Based on my interpretation of the statement above, I wonder about the runtime being deployed. The CRVS2010 runtime is here:
    MSM
    http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_mergemodules_13_0.zip
    MSI 32 bit
    http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_redist_install_32bit_13_0.zip
    MSI 64 bit
    http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_redist_install_64bit_13_0.zip
Are you using one of the above to deploy the crvs2010 runtime?

  • Crystal reports version 12 vs version 11

my company purchased crystal reports version 11 and got version 12 in error of course version 12 is an upgraded version so it was a keeper-----our hosting payroll site only works with version 11 and they said it would not be a problem if we created reports in version 12 that they could still provide data through our ODBC connection
all our reports were created in version 12 and successfully produce data--but suddenly 1 report does not work and of course they now say that they can only run the report if it is built in version 11--
so the it would not be a problem now is, i feel they changed something on their side that is causing this particular report not to read, a tek issue...but they say by grace of ... was the way the report ever worked, but than why do all other reports still work now???
is there any way to use our version 12 key product to get a downgraded version 11 to create this report?
or open the report using version 12 and export it as a version 11?
or if i recreate the report would the glitch on their side go away?

Crystal 2008 (version 12) reports can be opened in Crystal XI (version 11) and saved there.  If you don't have access to a copy of Crystal XI, could you possibly see whether the payroll company can downgrade it for you?

  • Using Crystal Reports version 8.5

    Hi,
I am using legaly Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition and Crystal Reports Basic for VS 2008 for software developing and reporting.
My client usees a third party software with reports designed in Crystal Reports 8.5 and I have to create new reports for that application. My client has Crystal Reports 8.5 Runtime installed. I tested, if I install Cristal Reports 2008 Runtime for my new reports, the other reports in 8.5 version is not work correctly. The migration of the existing reports to new version of Crystal Reports is not possible.
        My questions are:
        1. I can legaly use Cristal Reports 8.5 developer software if I have Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008?
        2. If I can, please tell me a link to download Crystal Reports 8.5.
        3. Can I install Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime and Crystal Reports 8.5 Runtime on same computer and all the reports, designed in the two versions of Crystal Reports, to work correctly?
    Thank you!

OK. this post turned out to be longer than I intended, but I hope it clarifies your situation and options.

But here is a stab at an answer; Reports created in Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008, can not be run by CR 8.5 as the file format is too different and CR 8.5 does not understand it.
Next time, it will be helpful to describe what is happening. Saying "...not work correctly" is pretty lame.
A few things I want to clarify:
I can legally use Crystal Reports 8.5 developer software if I have Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008?
    - Yes, you can. What AG meant to say was that CR 8.5 can not / should not be used in .NET. Not tested, not supported. But you can install CR 8.5 and it will live quite happily side by side with Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008
If I can, please tell me a link to download Crystal Reports 8.5.
    - Not sure what you are asking for. CR 8.5 had to be purchased. As it has been out of support for over 10 years now, you can not purchase it any more.
Can I install Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime and Crystal Reports 8.5 Runtime on same computer and all the reports, designed in the two versions of Crystal Reports, to work correctly?
CR 8.5 and Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008 will work side by side fine. However as I mentioned above, reports created in Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008 will not work with CR 8.5. Reports created in CR 8.5 will work in Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008.
Another point. I notice you say:
    Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime
Very careful there as there is Crystal Reports 2008 (v 12.x) and the runtime would be Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime. There is a version of CR that bundles with VS 2008 (Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008) which as file version of 10.5 and thus a CR 10.5 runtime.
Finally, to what I think you are really after. Correct me if I am wrong:
    1) You have a customer that has a 3rd party app built using CR 8.5
    2) Neither you, not your customer have CR 8.5
    3) You want to build additional reports for the customer
If my interpretation above is correct, then you are probably out of luck. As already mentioned, CR 8.5 is not available for purchase. Versions of CR later than CR 8.5 create rpt file formats that CR 8.5 does not udnerstand.
    Your options:
    1) Create a new app in .NET2008 using Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET 2008. You have to use the CR assemblies for .NET and you can use the CR 8.5 reports and any new reports you might want to create.
    2) Call sales (866-681-3435) and see if there is any way you can still purchase CR 8.5. Umm, don't hold your breath, but you never know...

  • Silverlight and Crystal Reports Version 11.2

    Hello
a customer works with Crystal Reports Version 11.2. Is it possible to create a Silverlight Application (in order to set the parameters) and then call the RPT-File? Is there a link for an example?
What I have found so far is this blog entry: http://www.global-webnet.net/blogengine/post/2009/01/06/Running-Crystal-Reports-from-Silverlight.aspx
... But nobody can tell me which version of Crystal Reports is needed.
    Thanks!
    Bernhard

    Hi Bernhard,
From the looks of the Design in your link it does appear to be a newer version of CR. It may be version 10.2 or 10.5 that comes with VS 2005 and 2008 he was using. If it was then R2 should work also.
There is a link to Contact the blogger, ask him what versions he was using.
Unfortunately we have not done any testing with silver light so can't say if it will work. Add your request to the Idea Place link above, search first, and then vote for it if found. Program Managers do watch it closely and they will add it if enough people request it.
    Thank you
