[CS2, CS3]Envelope Distort with gradient sends Illustrator to sleep (almost)

Hi there,
not sure if this is a well known flaw or not ...
What I did basically:
Filled a rectangle with a linear, 4-color-gradient
Did an Envelope Distort to it with 4 rows and 4 columns
Did some moves and rotations with about 50 % of the mesh points
As a result, nearly every action one might do to the artwork now takes an eternity to be executed. Why is this so?
Besides: Why is the file that huge? 12 MB ...
If you'd like to check the document:

Thanks,
Klaus

It's slow here as well. Quad 2.66MacPro/Ai13.0.2
The obvious solution is to not use an Envelope distort and just make a Gradient mesh. I'm not certain why you'd be using an Envelope anyway. You can simply shape a gradient mesh how you want. Envelope distorting a gradient in this manner results in banding or internal edges that are generally undesired. Gradient meshs won't have these edges.
I'd guess that the envelopes is having to re-plot every aspect of the underlying gradient which is why it's taking so long. It's something in how you created to object.
If you choose Object > Envelope > Release. Deselect both objects. Select both objects and choose Object > Envelope > Make with Top Object. Then AI is back to normal speed when editing. At least it is here. In addition, when I did this to your 12mb file and saved, it dropped to 640±kb.

  • Envelope distort with Mesh

    Hi,
    I am trying to create an envelope distort based on a grid mesh within a LiveEffect similar to Envelope distort--> Make with mesh. Given the path shape "art" I create a grid kmeshArt based on its bounding box:
    result = sAIArt->NewArt(kMeshArt,kPlaceAboveAll, nil,&myEnvelopeMesh);
    sAIMesh->InitCartesian(myEnvelopeMesh,width_i,height_j);
    result = sAIArt->GetArtBounds(art, &artBounds);
    //get the corners of the bounding art A,B,C,D, in clokwise order starting at top-left corner.
                                  pointA.h=artBounds.left;
                                  pointA.v=artBounds.top;
                                  pointB.h=artBounds.right;
                                  pointB.v=artBounds.top;
                                  pointC.h=artBounds.right;
                                  pointC.v=artBounds.bottom;
                                  pointD.h=artBounds.left;
                                  pointD.v=artBounds.bottom;
    Now via setpoint and a segment iterator I assign the values to  the four segments of the grid to match the art's bounding box:
    sAIMeshSegmentIterator->SetPoint(segment,0, &pointA); //top left corner point
    pointTMP.h=pointA.h+boundSize.h;
    pointTMP.v=pointA.v;
    sAIMeshSegmentIterator->SetPoint(segment,1, &pointTMP);     //horizontal handle
    pointTMP.h=pointB.h-boundSize.h;
    pointTMP.v=pointB.v;
    sAIMeshSegmentIterator->SetPoint(segment,2, &pointTMP);      //horizontal handle of next point
    sAIMeshSegmentIterator->SetPoint(segment,3, &pointB);
    sAIMeshSegmentIterator->NextOnPatch(segment,kAIMeshCounterClockwise); //top right corner
    I tried to create the envelope object by assigning the mesh a envelopeObject (second parameter) but it doesn't work.
    result = sAIEnvelopeSuite->MakeEnvelope(&art,1,myEnvelopeMesh,&eOptions,&myEnvelope);
    In fact, a call to sAIEnvelopeSuite->GetEnvelopeType(myEnvelope, &EnvType) reveals that it is of type kEnvelopeObject and not kEnvelopeMesh.
    So what I did was the following:
    result = sAIEnvelopeSuite->MakeEnvelope(&art,1,nil,&eOptions,&myEnvelope);
    result= sAIEnvelopeSuite->SetEnvelopeObject(myEnvelope, myEnvelopeMesh);
    In this case the envelope appears where it should be (when expanding the liveEffect object) but it has already distorted the shape within ("art"). If I manually restart the shape (by pressing the button "Reset Envelope Shape")  then it removes the original distortion of the enveloped shape and you can edit it perfectly by moving the vertices of the meshgrid, which behave as expected.
    In the image the (translucent white gradient) star should be aligned with the star behind, but it gets distorted (left) until envelope is reset (right).
    Why is this happening?  Is it because is created within a live effect? Maybe I am making a bad definition of the mesh grid or SetEnvelopeObject  is not properly used...
    Thanks,
    Jorge.

    You are using the the selection tool which will not allow you to grab a handle. So change to the direct select (the white arrow) tool and you will be much happier.

  • [CS3/CS4] Trouble with Gradient Text 22pts

    So, as Indesign CS3 and CS4, if i make a text 22pts and apply a gradient -90° rotated (into text), pdf exported its fine, but if it's distilled with .ps, ugly shade results.
    Why?
    With CS2 does not happen.
    Best regard.

    >I need distiller absolutly! (prepress workflow)
    when you you save postscript you are flattening the file so it could have something to do with the flattener presets.
    but there is no reason that you can't export from ID. I know you said its a work flow thing but one has to wonder are you working with people who are uninformed.

  • Illustrator CS3/CS2 text engine comaptibility with CS

    Is the text engine in Illustrator CS2 and CS3 backward compatible with Illustrator CS? We are considering upgrading to a newer version but need to understand the impact on the original text - much of which is in foreign languages.

    The basic text engine changed at AI 11 (CS) and, to the best of my knowledge, has remained the same since.
    If you can't get a clear answer from Adobe on this, post a small test file created in AI 11. (Use a font we're likely to have, e.g, Arial Unicode.) Those of us here with 12 and 13 will then open it and report the results.
    If you haven't yet seen it,

    is Mordy Golding's original post on the new text engine, now archived as FAQ #5.

  • All copies illustrator crash, cs2 cs3 cs4 Leopard 10.5.8 powermac 1.8 dual

    I crashes every time i open it. it suddenly started happening. i could get just past  the opening pane at first allowing me to choose what kind of document to open print rgb etc, the it stopped doing that. i get the opening pane the it crashes, it aslo happens in past copies cs2 cs3 cs4 non of my illustrator copies will open

    It could be an issue with your font caches.  Go get fontnuke and try deleting all your system and application font caches.
    It doesn't sound like a preference issue if it's affecting all the other versions.  Do you have the suite installed?  Is Photoshop working properly?

  • Right -click "Open With" shows old Illustrator 10, not newer CS3

    At work we have Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3. Due to a large archive of graphics we keep an older version of Illustrator 10.0 for files that just don't open in CS.
    I'm on a new machine with more memory so I want to give this Bridge a chance. But I just found it totally useless for Illustrator.
    The first day I used it I went to open a PDF in Illustrator, so in Bridge I right click and go to open with to only find Illustrator 10 and Photoshop CS3 listed. No Illustrator CS3. Nor any option to browse and choose a different app.
    I went through file associations, and changed all associations with 10 to CS3, but that doesn't solve how to open PDFs in Illustrator CS3 from Bridge without changing its default app from Acrobat.
    Here's what I mean:
    http://premium1.uploadit.org/TimothyB/bridge.jpg
    No where is there an option to tell CS3 Bridge to see Illustrator CS3 instead of version 10. I imagine this might be due to the order the techs installed Illustrator? I hope this doesn't mean I need a tech to mess with my computer to reinstall everything until it shows up as CS3 instead of 10, there are already so many problems that can happen from having two versions installed.

    In XP Pro, not there to be 100% sure, that "open with" already has Illustrator CS3 listed and no version 10, the opposite of what Bridge shows.
    I'll try it, just in case that helps update Bridge.
    Thanks

    I've spent about 12 hours trying to get this stupid thing to look right.. What i had to do is make each "gradient section" a different "shape", and make it exactly the right angle to contour with the flag. (IF anyone knows an easier way to do this, let me knowww)
    Anyway, the part I cant figure out is... I can do up and down gradients fine (even though it takes forever)
    What I cant figure out how to do is the gradients that dont go up and down all the way.
    I could do this in about 3 seconds in photoshop, but I'm just about ready to give up in illustrator....
    This is what I wanna do in illustrator...

    What i had to do is make each "gradient section" a different "shape", and make it exactly the right angle to contour with the flag...
    Traditionally, that's part of  what you do to render realistic shading in vector drawing programs. Before features like transparency effects and gradient meshes, such drawings are basically a combination of the gradient fill types provided by the program (in Illustrator, limited to the most basic two: linear and radial) and object blends. In an illustration like your sample, with compound curvature surfaces, a key to that is understanding that you can create blends between grad fills.
    So that drawing could be done using nothing more than those techniques: grad fills and blends. It would not be unusual for it to take 10 hours for a beginner not yet familiar with the tools to accomplish. An intermediate level user could do it in an hour or two.
    Transparency effects and gradient meshes provide more options.
    The trade-off with use of transparency effects is that you have to be aware of and vigilant about the fact that such effects often have to be rasterized as soon as they leave the drawing program, which--depending on the intended usage--can obviate the whole purpose of doing it in a vector program to begin with.
    The trade-off with gradient meshes is that the interface for using them is quite unintuitive and particularly frustrating to beginners.
    Beyond that general advice, you'd be asking for specifics on how to draw that partricular image of that particular flag; you'd essentially be asking for someone in a user forum to draw it for you as a custom step-by-step "tutorial".

  • Problems with gradient tool bar not remaining on object applied in illustrator cc

    Hello,
    when applying a gradient to a rectangle i will get the gradient tool, click on the left half of the object i want it applied to and while holding down drag a line to thew right hand side of the object. the problem the arises when i release the mouse as the gradient bar that has been shown while holding down then disappears. this applies the gradient but the issue is that all gradient editing has to be done on the gradient window as a posed to live on the object slowing the work flow.
    I am not sure what I'm doing wrong but help would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Joseph

    Just for the sake of learning how to use the tool i start with drawing a rectangle then click and drag the gradient tool across the box. i see the gradient line appear but when i release the mouse the gradient line disappears
    i end up witha box with a gradient but all my editing has to be done in the gradient box as shown in this screen shot:

  • CS6 Envelope Distort Warp - PMS color problem

    Hi Everyone!
    Massive issue here.
    We're using Envelope Distort > Warp to create packaging to fit a curved dieline.
    The image used for the background includes a Pantone PMS who's values are changing at the Warp stage.
    The image after warping appears lighter and the tones have changed.
    The image is an embedded Photoshop flattened .tif.
    We have tried:
    * removing all colour profiles from both Illustrator and Photoshop and any embedded profiles
    * changing the PMS to a spot colour that isn't linked to the Pantone Plus colour books we use, but retaining the correct CMYK values
    * we've replicated the problem using another image that includes tones of a PMS. Warping also changes the tones.
    * Expanding the final Warp in the hope it would revert to the right values after.
    Using CS6 on OS X 10.8.4
    I've attached an image of the problem. The top is how the PMS should read. Below, is after warping.
    *EDIT - Rasterizing the ENTIRE artwork solves the issue - BUT, this is not ideal to send to print as the text is now pixelated.
    We then Rasterized the background image, along with a vector shape of the dieline with no fill or stroke (as the image would not Rasterize on its own). On top of that we warped the text and other vectors. So we now have two warped shapes - one for the background and one for the text.
    It appears this is a bug in the way Illustrator treats colours at warp stage.
    Would be interesting to know if anyone else can replicate this problem and thoughts?
    Thanks muchly :-)

    We are experiencing a similar thing with gradients values changing slightly which cause min dot value issues for flexo printers.  We have tried all of the different envelope option settings and nothing works.  The text issue you are having did you try turning off the Anti-Alias option? Did it make a difference for the pixelated text?

  • How to make a envelop distort like in this image

    Hey guys I wanted to know how can i make a envelop distort like this image in adobe illustrator CS6. Im running it on Windows 7.

    I still believe the originator of the artwork at least tried to keep to the straight and narrow. The crucial question is whether Hunter wishes to (too).
    When zooming in as far as possible on the image (so it is 190 mm wide on screen), as far as I can see, the spaces are still constant width and the lettershapes at top and bottom are still straight, especially evident for the TE at the end, so I believe any deviation would be an inaccuracy. The rounding of the basically horizontal segments as in Envelope (or Art Brush) Distort should be clearly visible.
    I believe Hunter may be able to make sure by zooming in on the actual artwork, and maybe measuring distances between key Anchor Points, and/or dragging with the Line Tool between them, in the latter case the top of the TE would show the greatest deviance from straightness.

  • Envelope distort to center of the object only possible?

    Envelope distort to center of the object only possible?
    Okay, can anyone please give me a hint how to achieve the effect shown in the image? If not with Illustrator what software can do this effect?
    It's like an envelope distort but like the object (small circles) is not entirely wrapped into the envelope.
    I tried moving the corners of the applied envelope towards the center of the object but it resizes the entire shape along with it...

    Set up the dot pattern (or whatever the art is)
    Choose Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Mesh
    Enter 2 rows and 2 columns and click OK
    This will add 1 mesh point to the center of the artwork.
    Use the Direct Selection Tool (the white arrow) to select only that center mesh point.
    Double-click the Scale Tool and enter a value larger than 100% in the Uniform Field.

  • Issues exporting gradients from Illustrator CS5 files to EPS 8

    Hello everyone, I'm having problems exporting illustrator files to EPS, mainly with gradients that aren't rendering properly. These fills are appearing as small sliced objects rather than complete shapes. Any advice?
    Thanks!

    Illustrator 8 is over a decade old. I expect that Adobe has significantly changed the way gradients are saved in Illustrator files since version 8. So, in order to preserve the appearance of the gradient Illustrator just expands it, rather than continuing to support a legacy format that’s so old. This is unfortunate but understandable.
    Perhaps there are other options. Why are you saving as an Illustrator 8 EPS file? Surely you are not sending the file to someone who has no more recent version than 8? If the file is not meant for use exclusively with Adobe Illustrator 8 then it will be converted to some other format when the person you are sending it to opens it. When that happens, expect the gradient to be converted anyway.
    My point is I doubt this Illustrator 8 EPS file will need to be edited, so it doesn’t matter that the gradient is expanded.

  • Printing with 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour setting to Epson Stylus photo 2100

    I have just upgraded my work Mac (G5 Dual 2ghz PowerPC running OSX 10.5.4 and 6gb Ram) to CS3. Brilliant, except when I came to print out a presentation for a client, it keeps crashing illustrator. It always happens when I try and print to my Epson Stylus Photo 2100 using 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour settings. We have previously be using 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour settings (as this gets a pretty true colour representation out of our CMYK printer). All the other settings work fine, but lacks the rich colour of the emulated setting. I don't seem to be able to get even close by adjusting the setting in the colour settings panel.
    Does anyone know of a way round this, or of a patch to fix this? I have been checking out the internet, but cant find the Illustrator settings from version 6 (i'm sure it was very basic - but my boss wont except anything but those settings).
    I have tried printing with 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour settings to our Lexmark laser printer C522 (basic colour results) but it was able to print. Not sure why it should work on one printer but not another?
    The printer we are using is a Epson Stylus Photo 2100, with the latest driver 3.09.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I wonder if it is a conflict with the system settings or Adobe Bridge settings somewhere. I used to use "Emulate Illustrator 6...", but always had a RIP interpret the information. I can't think of any reason why Illustrator would crash. I'd send Adobe Tech Support a note about it, maybe they can figure out what's going on. By the way, I sometimes switch my settings to "Emulate Illus 6..." and, like you, have had no problems ( but, I'm still in v10 via 10.3.9 ).

  • Adobe Products CS, CS2 & CS3

    Can anyone confirm that these products install and work properly. I really want to upgrade but it's not an option if these programs don't work.

    Adobe just released a paper on this topic, it discusses their latest releases...
    "Adobe Photoshop CS3, Flash CS3 Professional, Contribute CS3, Dreamweaver CS3, Fireworks CS3, Flash Player 9, GoLive 9, Illustrator CS3, InCopy CS3, InDesign CS3, Bridge CS3, Version Cue CS3, Device Central CS3 and Acrobat Connect (Start Meeting) are all compatible with Leopard.
    Older versions of Adobe and Macromedia may work with Leopard, but the company warns there could be “installation, stability, and reliability issues for which there is no resolution.” Adobe said these products would not be updated for Leopard."

  • Using an envelope distortion as an action.

    I am trying to create a distortion action so that I can apply it to an image that will eventually be printed on a curved surface. I think the envelope distortion will work. So when I try to create an action with the envelope distort, I make the distortion using the rows and columns, and when I try to play the action on an image, instead of distorting the image, it just moves it around for every time I moved the row/column around.
    I know that's very confusing but hopefully someone understands and can help. Thank you.
    ...and if there is an easier way, besides using envelope distort, please let me know.

    We pad print on a curved surface. So what I did was etch perfect circles and straight lines onto the curved surface, put ink in the depressed etches, lift that ink off of the curved surface and onto a flat surface. Now this image is what our distortion should look like to print perfect circles and lines. I'll call this image A. I then scanned image A into Illustrator. I then took an image of circles and lines, with the exact image size as it should appear printed on the curved surface. I'll call that image B. I want to create an action that will distort image B to fit exactly with image A. This way, well what I hope will happen, I can apply this action to any image, in my case logos, and it will distort it perfectly to be printed on a curved surface.
    I've tried using the different warp effects (arch, arc upper, arc, lower, bulge, and so on) but due to how the pad flexes over the curved surface, these warp effects do not work perfectly, and it needs to be dead on perfect.
    I've tried pasting the vector file into photoshop and using the warp tool in there, which is very much like the envelope distort, but I cannot get image B to match perfectly with image A.
    Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks.
