Cuda_supported_cards.txt in CS5.5
I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 card that I was able to use with PP 5.0. I see it's not on the list of supported cards for 5.5 and the text file no longer exists.
Why doesn't Adobe support all high end and expensive NVIDIA cards? Has anyone found a new workaround?
Colin, Tks. Unfortunately I was not able to edit my post fast enough you responded so fast!
Let me clarify: I had purchased the GTX 470 not the 480. As you point out the 480 is not on the list, the GTX 470 is on the list.
I had specifically purchased the GTX 470 to comply with CS 5 standards when I purchased the upgrade last year. And I wanted to make sure it would still work with CS 5.5.
My statement that the 480 is supported at this time was incorrect and a mistake on my part.
Someone such as myself did not read this thread with the purpose of circumventing standards, but thinking that something had changed. I appreciate your info, and I do try to stay within recommended procedures.
The GTX 470 is what I have and it IS on the list of approved cards.
The point I was attempting to make was that the thread is useful not for the purpose of getting around recommended procedures, but for knowing what is required.
(Earlier, when I had first upgraded from CS4 to CS5 I was like many others stuck with a card not supported, and I can't tell you the relief when discovering the txt file revision capability (i.e "hack") which allowed me time to upgrade my system as I went. So I consider it a very good feature.)
Sorry to have added to the confusion.

I'm on a "gaming" Win laptop using one of the latest nVidia GPU's, the GTX 880M. Being new--year old really new?--, I had to add it to the list contained in cuda_supported_cards.txt for Pr, AE and AME. With the newest CC 2014 update, these .txt files are no longer present in their respective program folders.
Does this mean that the programs no longer differentiate? If they see CUDA cores they enable the acceleration? Or does this mean they stopped the end-user from by-passing their filters? How to verify if I'm getting the acceleration? I recall having the feature greyed out in previous versions of these programs if I hadn't yet edited the list, and at the moment they are not greyed out despite not having found a list to edit.
I've searched for mention of this change in newest version but have yet found a discussion.
Thanks in advance,
AndrewFrom CC 2014 menu, select: file / project settings / General
And if the Renderer "drag down" shows a "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration" option, then rest assured that Premiere Pro is seeing and using your GPU!

Your mileage may vary ... When I originally installed CS6 on my new PC with a GTX 670 card I had to go edit the cuda_supported_cards.txt file and add the card; plus tweak the Nvidia settings (see link below). Anyway, tonight after I installed the 6.03 patch update I had to modify the file again. But I could not get notepad to save the file without an access denied error. Even though I installed the original program and patch update under my user name with administrator priveleges, I had to go back and run notepad as administrator. Just an FYI post in case someone runs into this issue.
http://vimeo.com/13440307You don't need to edit the file to recognize your card, simply delete the file and hardware MPE will be enabled! That's much easier.

Hi all, I previously was involved in some discussion regarding GPU acceleration with CUDA in Premier Pro CS5 using an 'Unsupported card' with my Macbook Pro... I would like to show you this still works and will be here to show the process for anyone, and will post a video of the whole thing as a step-by-step probably tomorrow (its quite late where i am just now) but I'll give you a quick run through just now... Proof at bottom of page...
Ps. This only applies to Nvidia card Macs.. I have no ATI card mac to try this out as OpenCL etc but i would imagine it would be a similar process...
Step 1... Install Cuda drivers for your Mac (im using 4.2.7) here http://www.nvidia.com/object/mac-driver-archive.html
Step 2... Install GfxCardStatus and force your graphics (if using a laptop) to discrete card only http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus
Step 3... Open Terminal... and run GpuSniffer... path as follows for original default installation directory, copy and paste then hit enter or change as required
/Applications/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6.app/Contents/GPUSniffer.app/Contents/MacOS/GPUSniffer
This should give you an output as follows, while it may differ this is my output...

Step 4... Using the name of your card from the above output, i have it underlined, in my case a GeForce GT 330M, copy this exact name as we will now add it to the list of supported cards...
Step 5... Using terminal still, again assuming default install directories, copy and paste then hit enter on the following...
sudo nano /Applications/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6.app/Contents/cuda_supported_cards.txt
You will then be asked for your computer password, type it and hit enter, it will not be shown as you type FYI... You will then see the default supported cards, add your card by pasting the name you have as in Step 4, then use ctrl+x to escape, type Y to save and hit enter a couple of times to get out...
You should now be able to run Premier Pro CS6 using the CUDA GPU option you can select in Renderer as you start a new project!!
Any questions i will try to answer them as soon as possible, and as i said i'll screen capture and record a video tutorial as i know that would be of help to some of you out there.. Some proof, here is a pic...
PS. It is a full 1080 pic so it is quite large...

Information about GPUs supported by Premiere Pro CS5.5
Hi,
I'm going to buy a new nVidia video card and, because of I'm very passionate of video editing, I want finally have one supported by Premiere Pro CS5.5. I've read something about that on the Adobe site, and I've found a list of supported GPUs:
GeForce GTX 285 (Windows and Mac OS)
GeForce GTX 470 (Windows)
GeForce GTX 570 (Windows)
GeForce GTX 580 (Windows)
Quadro FX 3700M (Windows)
Quadro FX 3800 (Windows)
Quadro FX 3800M (Windows)
Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro FX 5800 (Windows)
Quadro 2000 (Windows)
Quadro 2000D (Windows)
Quadro 2000M (Windows)
Quadro 3000M (Windows)
Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro 4000M (Windows)
Quadro 5000 (Windows)
Quadro 5000M (Windows)
Quadro 5010M (Windows)
Quadro 6000 (Windows)
Quadro CX (Windows)
Now I'm asking, if I bought a GTX 550, which is not in the list, would it be supported? I think so becase, however, it should be better than, for example, a GTX 470, instead present in the list. But I have this doubt... Can you clarify my ideas?Welcome to the forums!
It depends on what you mean by supported. If you mean can you use either of them then the answer is yes. The supported list is those cards specifically have been tested by Adobe and are listed in the "cuda_supported_cards.txt" file If you have another card you may have to add it to that file. If you take a look at the Premiere Pro BecnMark (PPBM5) you will see that many other cards are being used by people that have submitted their results,
The more important factors that you should consider is the number of CUDA cores and how much power your system can supply to this upgrade that you intend to do. The 470 has 448 CUDA cores and requires 215 watts. The 550 is of course a slightly new design but it is at the low end of the CUDA cores with only 192 cores but it only draws 116 watts. Either could require you to upgrade your power supply depending on how much spare power is available in your power supply.
Here are some boards that I personally tested about a month ago (prices may have changed) showing PPBM5 (MPEG2-DVD, H.264 and Rendering the Timeline) encoding times versus board type. -
Adobe premiere pro CS5.5 Mercury playback engine with CUDA
Hello,
I am trying to turn on the mercury playback engine to use my graphic card (Geforce 9800 GT)
I have modified that cuda_supported_cards.txt using my graphic card name and when I tried to save it it says access denied
so I have copied that cuda_supported_cards.txt file to the desktop and modified it and replaced it back in to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 .
After all this the mercury engine with cuda is not turning on
Is it becasue my graphic card will not support to CS5.5?
Please help me.....
Thank you...Does your card have 1Gig of video ram?

Re: CS5.5 GPU Hack - Not Working?
I tried the EXACT same steps with Adobe Premier Pro CS5.5 to apply the GPU hack but after modifing the cuda_supported_cards.txt file Premier Pro CS5.5 will not start. It will just crash. But when I restore the cuda_supported_cards.txt it then starts up correctly (but with no GPU hack obviously).
What's wrong? Anyone have the same problem?
FYI: I am using the Shipped Boxed Version of the software as it was shipped to me.It worked! OK so what I had to do was change the FIRST line of the text file to my graphics card's name.
The reason why it DIDN'T work before is because I was APPENDING my graphics card's name to the END of the text file, hence I was increasing the number of text lines by ONE.
So I think CS5.5 does a check for TOTAL lines in text, however if you change ONE of the EXISTING lines in the text file then it will work.
Please note I was using a shipped boxed version rather than the downloadable version. -
With all the interest of the "unsupported" GPUs, I thought it was time to start a specific thread.
Please post your questions and experiences.
Hacking is not advised and the unsupported cards are not ready for production use.

How to make Premiere CS5 work with GTX 295
by marvguitar on 01 May 2010 22:38
I figured out how to activate CUDA acceleration without a GTX 285 or Quadro... I'm pretty sure it should work with other 200 GPUs. Note that i'm using 2 monitors and there's a extra tweak to play with CUDA seamlessly with 2 monitors. Here are the steps: Step 1. Go to the Premiere CS5 installation folder.
Step 2. Find the file "GPUSniffer.exe" and run it in a command prompt (cmd.exe). You should see something like that:
Device: 00000000001D4208 has video RAM(MB): 896
Device: 00000000001D4208 has video RAM(MB): 896

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- If you look at the last line it says the CUDA device is not chosen because it's not in the named list of card. That's fine. Let's add it. Step 3. Find the file: "cuda_supported_cards.txt" and edit it and add your card (take the name from the line: CUDA device details: Name: GeForce GTX 295 Compute capability: 1.3 So in my case the name to add is: GeForce GTX 295 Step 4. Save that file and we're almost ready. Step 5. Go to your Nvidia Drivercontrol panel (im using the latest 197.45) under "Manage 3D Settings", Click "Add" and browse to your Premiere CS5 install directory and select the executable file: "Adobe Premiere Pro.exe" Step 6. In the field "multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration" switch from "multiple display performance mode" to "compatibilty performance mode" Step 7. That's it. Boot Premiere and go to your project setting / general and activate CUDA Hope this helps -
Will the newer video cards work in CS5 as a CUDA card just by adding the name of the card to cuda_supported_cards.txt or is there more to it than that?
CS5 only supports NVidia for Cuda, which SHOULD work with any card that has at least 1Gig of video ram

CS5.02 w/MPE turns off Aero Glass
I have a new Dell Precision T5500 workstation(X5560 CPU, 12GB Ram, PNY Quadro 4000, Win7 Ultimate 64-bit) running CS5 MC. AE looks and works great. PPro CS5.02 loads and looks correct but, once a project has loaded with the Mercury Playback Engine(MPE) enabled, all Aero Glass effects for Window Color and Appearance get switched off. Resulting in what looks like the default Windows 7 Basic properties and color scheme(Baby Blue with no transparency).
PPro captures, edits and outputs fine. And once PPro is exited, the Win7 desktop, visually, returns to my "normal" saved Theme. While PPro is running, the Win7 Personalization page shows that my saved Theme is loaded. Clicking it's icon to reload the settings doesn't cause any visual changes. Selecting the Window Color icon brings up the Window Color and Appearance tool which has a message stating that Windows Aero is off, etc.
If I remove the Quadro 4000 entry from the cuda_supported_cards.txt file, essentially disabling the hardware MPE, Aero Glass stays on while PPro runs. Except now I have to render effects since Premiere is using the software MPE.
The NVidia driver is from 10/16/2010( 8.17.12.5993 ). Everything else on this machine(HW/SW) is up to date and is working great. I haven't been able to find any mention of this anomaly here or on other CS5 or NVidia related forums. Has anyone seen/heard of this? Is there somebody else using the Quadro 4000 with CS5?Thanks, I checked out the search results of the link posted.
I grabbed and ran Microsoft's Mats_Run.aero.exe tool. Funny thing, even with Premiere running that tool still says there are no issues with my system. Plus I don't get a systray message saying something to the effect of "aero is turned off" like other folks report in the MS Answers forums when things like this happen. Anyway, like I said previously, I can live with this "feature" while I'm using PPro and so far with my hardware, my AE usage hasn't been effected.
Thanks All, -
Upgrade from CS5 to 5.5 - No CUDA on Quadro 5000 anymore
Hi there,
did the update to CS5.5
Now the Mercury playback engine entry is greyed out and no more CUDA is working.
cuda_supported_cards.txt lists all the cards. GPU sniffer says: CUDA driver too old: 3010
Will this update solve the problem?

Nvidia GTX 400 cards and CS5 (GTX285 is no longer current)
Given that NVidia has now released the GTX470 and GTX480 cards, is it reasonable to assume they will work well with Premiere Pro CS5? The GTX285 is outdated at this point and not really worth purchasing when compared to the GTX470.
Does the new Mercury engine run pretty much on any of the newer Nvidia cards, with only the 285 mentioned because of lack of time to test all permutations? I can't imagine it wouldn't run on a GTX470 or GTX 260 system for example, since the drivers are the same for most of the newer Nvidia cards.

[email protected]there is a simple text file inside the PREMIERE program directory which LISTS graphics card that can be used with MERCURY all you need to do is edit this list to include the card you want to use.
Providing your graphics card has at least 1gb and it is enabled to use CUDA the Mercury engine can be HARDWARE enabled by simple editing of this file
c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro cs5\cuda_supported_cards.txt
there is also a program which SNIFFS out which graphic card you have this is
c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro\ cs5gpusniffer.exe
just use this program and note carefully how the name of your card is listed then add this name EXACTLY as it appears to
c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro cs5\cuda_supported_cards.txt the easy solution is to CUT and PASTE the name
IF YOU UPDATE Premiere at any time then it automatically overwrites cuda_supported_cards.txt to its original state so you will then need to manually enter your graphic card name again inside this simple text file.
I am running MERCURY HARDWARE ENABLED RENDERING using a humble 9800gt nVidia card but you need to realize that not all cards which run will give you 100% compatibility with all the filters and effects which Premiere can apply ...probably Adobe have severely limited the list to cards which have been extensively tested...
hope this is helpful to you....in reality a fairly broad range of CUDA enabled nVidia cards CAN be used with Mercury Hardware enabled.
In a nutshell make sure your nVidia card has been CUDA enabled by running CUDA installation software then edit cuda_supported_cards.txt which in a WIN7 installation is found in c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro cs5\ if your are running another operating system then it might be located in a slightly different place but you can always do a search..........these details also apply to a SNOW LEOPARD system but obviously these files cs5gpusniffer.exe
and cuda_supported_cards.txt
providing your card is on the list in cuda_supported_cards.txt and it has at least 1gb ram then it should work OK
Adobe are simply being very cautious with regard to thoroughly testing cards before they list them as compatible. -

GPU Acceleration Cards For Premiere Pro CS5
Hello:
I am ready to invest in a GPU accelerated graphics card that will speed up playback and use the Mercury Playback Engine in GPU mode.
From what I could find on the Adobe site, these are the cards that are supported for Premiere Pro CS5
Supported NVIDIA video cards for GPU acceleration (CS5):
GeForce GTX 285 (Windows and Mac OS)
GeForce GTX 470 (Windows)
Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro 5000 (Windows)
Quadro 5000M (Windows)
Quadro FX 3800 (Windows)
Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro FX 5800 (Windows)
Quadro CX
Can anyone give me a recommendation from your own experience? Is the list of cards above still valid?
Thanks,
Rich LocusSo... before I go out and spend $650 on a GeForce GTX 680, it is this simple to make it work in CS5?
Yes.
(1) Make sure the card has at least 1GB of VRAM (which the GTX 680 has).
(2) Edit the cuda_supported_cards.txt to add one line: GeForce GTX 680 (starting in column 1)
(3) Install the card?
Do step 3 before step 2.
Also, you can simply delete the cuda_supported_cards.txt file
and achieve the same result.
Will Premiere Pro recognize that I have the card and immediately take advantage of the GPU capabilities, or do I have to change options?
You will need to specify:
"MPE GPU Acceleration" in your Project Settings:
If you do not have a supported card (or have not applied the hack),
this option will be greyed out. -
Premiere Pro CS5.5 Not Starting
Hello,
I've never had this issue in the past until I recieved this new workstation. It's a Dell T7500 running Windows 7 64bit with a Nvidia Quadro 6000 video card. The only way I can get PP to start is from a reboot. After that and it will not start again. When I launch PP, after the splash screen goes away the main UI window opens, but instead of displaying the workspace, it hangs there and displays a white screen. The application windows says it's not responding. I get no error messages or anything.
When it does start after a reboot, the source monitor window gets corrupted often and will not display video. I've seen this happen before too on a laptop running a quadro fx 2800m video card. I believe this problem to be video card related too, but the quadro 6000 is supposed to be supported. It's often common practice for a software vendor to certify a certain driver version, but I can't find anything like that. Anyone have any suggestions?
thanksActually I think it is just poor support from Adobe for the Quadro 6000. Any machines we get from Dell are immediately wiped and reloaded with our own build. I have discovered that if I disable the mecury playback engine for this card, PP starts and works as it should. The file is called cuda_supported_cards.txt and is located in the root installation folder. So that screams poorly implemented support to me. I've logged this as a bug, but will not hold my breath to see a fix for it from Adobe.
