Current measurement capture

Hi everyone,
novice in Labview, currently using version 8.2.
attached is a simple vi program, purpose is to obtain data from a certain device, mainly using Agilent E3646A as DC Power Supply. I have a couple of questions...
1) how do i determine the byte count (Visa Read)? I wired Return Count (Visa Write) to byte count (Visa Read), the current seems constant
2) how do i implement by setting a voltage & current limit to the existing program?
3) how do i obtain the device's current consumption?
thank you so much!

You DO NOT wire the return count output to VISA Read. The return count is the number of bytes written and has nothing to do with how many bytes you should read. You can look in the programming manual to get an idea of how many bytes the query will return. You can, however, put some large number for the number of bytes to read. The instrument will assert EOI at the end of the data so the VISA Read will automatically terminate when the EOI is detected.
The simplest thing to do is to use the existing driver for the E3646A. Is there a reason you don't want to? You can use the Tools>Instrumentation menu option to search for it or to go to the Instrument Driver Network.

  • TestStand DC current measure

    Hi!
I'm using TestStand 2012 with LabVIEW 2011 for measuring the current in my Sensor Interface module. In the TestStand program's setup part I initialize the DC current measurement channel, and as the VI's output I take the Session and error out. In the Main part in a for loop I measure the DC current, and save the value in an array. In the clean up part I close the DC current channel. I have 1200 iterration step in the for loop and after 2-300 step my computer get crashed, and I have to restart it, I can't do anything, can't move the mouse ... I in the for loop I tried to close and reinitialize the DC current channel after  100 and 200... step and this way it goes to 1183 ot 1200 and crashed.
    I use NI-PXI-4071 DMM, Windows 7 and PXI-1033

    Hi Tamas!
I tried to reproduce the issue with a similar test sequence that I created, but without any success.
I ran the main part of the sequence for 10000 steps. During that I had a look on the resource consumption of teststand. I saw that it uses circa 6-7 times more memory, and 20 % of CPU, but for me it did not froze down.
I guess you ran out of memory, and because of this your OS freezes. Did you monitor the resource consumption?
Did you change anything in the settings of the VI call? How complex is your VI?
Is it possible to tell more about your sequence?
I have a suggestion, maybe it is worth to try it.
You wrote, you use a for loop. So if you go to the run options of the VI, you should set the Test recoding option to Disable. Due to this, the results will be evaluated after the 1200 iterations.
This solution is shown in picture TS_1.png
Or, you could achieve the same results, with deleting the for loop end enabling the looping in the settings of the called VI. This is shown in the TS_02.png image.
I suggest you to write an e-mail to [email protected] . If you can, please send the sequence, and I could have a look on it.
Please let me know, if my solutions helped, or please write to [email protected]

  • Time to make a current measurement

    Hi,
I am new to the PXI 4132. I am trying to measure current through a device using the PXI 1033 which has a PXI 4132 in it. I would like to know the lowest current that I can measure using this device(as I would be using this to measure leakage in a device) and also how much time would it take to make this lowest current measurement.

I have never used this device but from the specification sheet it looks like measurement rates are dependent on the aperture time.  With longer aperture times you get less noise.  From Figure 5 and Table 2 it looks like the noise on a current measurement on the 10 uA range with 1 PLC aperture is about 20 pA RMS.  With that setting you can get a maximum of 59.9 or 49.9 readings per second, depending on your power line frequency.

  • SCXI-1104 & 1102 Current Measurement

    1. Can SCXI-1104 be used for current measurement by soldering a precise resistor onto the board?
    2. If I use TC 2095 as multiplexer for SCXI 1102, and wire the input current through thermocouple plug, will that influence the current measurement?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Both methods are equivalent, at the end the only difference is the location of the precision resistance. If you reconfigure your system frequently I think the 1303 method will be more convenient. However, if this system is designated for this test I think that soldering the resistances to the 1102 will be the best
    option.

  • Constant Current Measurement VI.Which pins to use?

I have got the constant current measurement vi from the examples portion of LABVIEW 6.0.I have got NI-DAQ 6024E and it's connector block CB-68LP.I have left the default parameters as it is of channel & device.I read the input current values on pins 68 & 67 but they are not accurate.Infact, they are too far from the actual values.I've a potentiometer of variable resistance which I use in series of this circuit. The Rs shown on front panel makes no difference to the readings.
Also, is there any way I can increase the current limit of this program?
I'm attaching the VI I have used.

Is your DAQ card setup for differential input? If it is, you're using the wrong ground reference. You want to use pins 68 and 34 (AI0 is positive (68), AI8 is negative (34)).
This is most likely your problem.

Hello Mor. Thank you for contacting National Instruments. Is your FP controller showing up in the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) under Remote Systems? Does it find your modules when you right click on the IP address and select Find Devices? If it does, expand Data Neighborhood>>Fieldpoint Items>>your IP address>>your controller. When you hit start are all of your items successful? If they are then everything is working properly.
If your controller is not showing up under Remote Systems or Find Devices timeouts, reset your controller and change the network settings so that MAX suggests values for you. Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a great day!

  • How to use scb 68(pci 6221) for voltage and current measurement

    hi

PCI 6221 is DAQ card with 68 terminals and SCB (Shielded Connector Board) 68 is termination board to those 68 pins of 6221 card, so that you can connect signals (to be measured) to appropriate pin of PCI 6221. You might already aware of it.
Refer to the pin out of PCI 6221 to check which is the correct terminal, for voltage measurements.
You cannot measure current directly, instead use a resistor of known value (and appropriate current rating), let current (to be measured) flow through it and measure the voltage across that resistor.
I am not allergic to Kudos, in fact I love Kudos.

  • Can anyone provide the VI of current measurement for Agilent34901A channel21 and 22?

I want to measure the current by the Agilent34901A channel21 or 22. The HP34901A installed on the Agilent34970A is connected to the computer via GPIB Bus. Does anyone have the subvi for this measurement?

If you have the 34970A driver from NI, open HP34970A EZ Voltage.vi. On the diagram, the first string you'll see is "MEAS:VOLT:". Change this to "MEAS:CURR:". Save the modified VI as HP34970A EZ Current.vi. If you want, you can add this VI to HP34970A Single Point.vi just by adding an item to the "Function" slider and adding a new case.

  • Monitor audio tracks not currently being captured?

While logging and/or capturing, I would like to be able to hear what's going on in an audio track I have not currently selected for log or capture. This way, I can keep an eye -or rather ear- on whether the sound man added a second mic between takes or something interesting has developed with the boom audio.
It appears as if I can only monitor what I've selected to log or capture in the Audio portion of the Clip Settings tab of the Log and Capture tool. Is that true? If I think I don't want it, I don't get to hear it?
    Martin

That is the FIREWIRE feed. There are still audio outputs on the back of the deck. If there are more than two, you are in luck. If there aren't, then SOL.

  • Error concerning current measurement

I am trying to measure a voltage differential from a device (Magnehelic) which produces the 4-20mA output. I am using a DAQcard-6024. In the configuration window, I set the max and min input range with a 6 and 0. I have custom scaling with a slope of .375 and a y-intercept of -1.5. I keep receiving an error message saying that my max and min values don't fall within the appropriate range. It says the appropriate range is between -1.49... and -1.51...  Any ideas on what could be causing this problem?

    Squinn21:
Regardless of scaling errors, I believe the 6024 can only read voltage inputs, not current. You would need to place a 250 ohm precision resistor across the DAQ input terminals to convert the 4-20mA into a 1-5V siganl the DAQ can read.

  • Keithley 2000 current measurement

    Hi All,
I am using keithley 2000 DMM to measure current. I have configured the DMM under IVI Drivers in MAX. I am using the example program in CVI to configure and read the current drawn. When I read the current drawn from the DMM the current value displayed is incorrect. I have used the auto adjust to zero function also. Even on multiple readings with delay, the value keeps fluctuating and is no where near to the expected value. Can anyone suggest why I am not able to read the correct value? Where can I find the configuration parameters for this DMM in MAX? How do I know if I have configured the DMM correctly in MAX or not?
    Any pointers would be helpful.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Pradeep

    Hi Pradeep,
Try downloading the drivers for the Keithley DMM from http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.model_page?p_model_id=248
Nxt question is as to how you are connecting the DMM to your PC (serial, gpib??)
If you have connected over GPIB, verify that it is showing in MAX under devices and interfaces.
You can then right click on the instrument and select communicate with instrument. Use simple commands that should be available in the manual to read data from
the DMM. Once you have verified that communication is established, try using the example programs in CVI.

  • Conductance (current) Measurement vs Time with SR830

    Dear all.
I'm totally new to lock-in amplifier as well as LabVIEW. We have the Stanford Research SR830 in our lab and I want to setup an experiment to measure the conductance (or current) versus time. The conductance I want to measure is in the order of 1 nS. I have read many papers and they used lock-in amplifier for the measurement, sometime with the preamplifier. Most of the time they put a modulated voltage of frequency 10 to 100 Hz, amplitude 30mV to the drain and the source of the device. Though I am not sure how they set up the experiment.
It would be really appreciated that you could suggest me a setup for the measurement? Any other instrument is required?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi ncthanh1986,
I would not know how to set up an experiment with your specific piece of hardware, this might be something you would ask Stanford Research or consult the manual.
Instrument wise, the way to get the measurements from your SR830 to LabVIEW would be to have either a GPIB or RS-232 interface. National Instruments offers both of these interfaces with USB if needed.
Once you have the measurement in LabVIEW, you will be able to calculate the conductance in software.
    Hope this helps!

  • Current Measurements, General Questions, PCI-6229

I've been using the 6229 board for a while doing voltage measurements and digital I/O, but now I get to work with 4-20 mA inputs.
I'm using DAQmxCreateAICurrentChan to configure the channel/create the task. After a while I figured out the 6229 does not have an internal shunt resistor so I'll use an external 250-ish ohm resistor. With the channel configured as RSE I got the sotware to complie and run, but it really seems like this should be a differential channel. If I try that, using DAQmx_Val_InputTermCfg_Diff, I get errors saying this value is not supported.
It really seems like I need to be doing this in differential mode, else, what inputs do I connect the shunt resistor to?
And as long as I'm thinking I need a diff channel, why not just use a differential voltage channel, or two RSE voltage channels, hook up the shunt resistor, and calculate the current myself?
Also, when setting up a current channel, are Min and Max specified as voltages or current?
Sorry if I sound so clueless. The manuals are great at defining things and I've ben able to do a lot using them, but sometime a little more context helps.
    Mike
    P.S. The 4-20 mA devie I am using is - http://www.dwyer-inst.com/Product/Pressure/DifferentialPressure/Gage-Switches-Digital/SeriesDH3/Ordering#specs

You will need to measure VOLTAGE, not current.  What I have done for something similar is create a DAQmx Scale which does the calculation to current for me.  So you use a voltage task with a scale that will give you the results in Amps (or mA if you so desire).  Your max and min should be based on the values AFTER the scale.

  • Current measurements between 4071 and 2575 sometimes not correct

I'm using PXI-4071 and a PXIe-2575 in handshaking mode with a scan list.
The DMM is measuring current and the MUX is in 1x196 mode.
When running the scan list, I rarely (randomly) get a very small measurement in the nA to uA (when it should be 4-20mA). I'll run the scan list again and that channel will be correct, so it doesn't seem to correspond to a channel.
I've tried increasing the settling time of both the DMM and the MUX, but neither have had any effect.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Cswieson,
Is the relay board relatively old? If a board is close to end of life, there is a chance that the relay will sporatically not close and/or open. If the relay is stuck open, the DMM might measure very low current because no current is flowing (and only noise is coming through).

  • Current measurement using NI 9227

    Hello.
I am using NI cRIO 9012 with I/O modules NI 9472 (DO), NI 9227 (AI current), NI 9225 (AI voltage) in Scan Interface mode. I want to aqcuire current through a resistor using NI 9227 and implement PI control. I think I made the wiring as per the manual of NI 9227 but unable to acquire any measurement.
Im afraid I am making a mistake in connections of the 9227 to the resistor.
Kindly help me. Are there any precautions and necessary steps I need to take while connecting it? Any necessary steps to be taken while using the analog pin in the VI.
    Thanks in advance.
    Lahari

The 9227 does not measure the voltage across your resistor.  It measures the voltage drop across it own internal current shunt resistor (12mOhm according to the data sheet) that is directly connected between the AI+ and AI- of a channel.  This smaller resistor (the shunt) needs to be in series with your circuit in order to properly measure the current going through your circuit.
