Cursive writing in inDesign

Hey,
I am working on a printed book for second graders that teaches cursive handwriting. You may remember this from your school days... the guides that have the dotted line through the center... the little arrows on the characters that teach which direction the curves go...
Here is my problem. The writers use a set of cursive fonts, http://www.schoolhousefonts.com/Schoolhouse/samples.htm to teach from. They come with software to properly align and position the cursive letterforms together, which won't work because I am doing the layout in inDesign. Any ideas on different cursive fonts, or ways of getting cursive fonts to position correctly in inDesign? I have CS4 and CS5 and am using Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I figured out what their software was doing. It has all the possible placements and adjustments of the cursive letters as different glyphs. What you end up doing to get it to work, is type what you want to be cursive in any text editing program (doesn't work with inDesign though), then run the little program and it switches out each character with the correct glyph. I found this out because if I copy the changed cursive text from textEdit into inDesign unformatted, it displays all the greek and jumbled glyphs. Change it to the cursive font and it looks like it should.
This is a pain but it has to be my workflow... unless someone knows of an Opentype version of the Zaner-Bloser Cursive Set

  • Why does InDesign CS6 forget my preferences when I re-start?

Why does InDesign CS6 forget my preferences when I re-start? Not every time, but often. It's very frustrating to have to re-enter all my prefs. Every once in a while I start up InDesign CS6 and the new document dialog shows page sizes in po (I always use inches) and the prefs all seem to revert to default.

Do you have a Windows PC and when shutting down, is Indesign still open? If so, this can result in a damaged preferences when still writing while Indesign is being terminated by the system.

  • (CS3) Images resize in InDesign to Photoshop copying

Hi everyone, hopefully you can help me out. I'm running Adobe Photoshop and InDesign CS3 on my Mac, and it's been working fine before - even this morning. Basically, I have images in InDesign with exact dimensions that I'm copying to Photoshop to work something out. This never happened before and it always worked fine, but now when I copy from InDesign to Photoshop the image sizes have sometimes increased fourfold.
For example, if I copy a 166x93 px image from InDesign into Photoshop, it comes up at 692x388 - before, it would copy at the same 166x93 size. Does anyone know why this is happening? The reason I ask is because not only is it annoying and I want to fix it for future ease-of-use, but I am trying to get some images into a specific size, but increasing them to the size the canvas is creating makes them bad quality. I know you can resize them smaller, but (and it's hard to explain) this isn't going to work for what I'm trying to achieve.
    Thanks a lot for reading.

I would believe your last statement if I were working on a Mac. I don't give Windows machines that level of sophistication.
The only thing this HP is telling me is that it can't remember what I'm doing.
If something works once, it should work every time. If I copy something, it should be there when I paste it.
I'm not individually resizing my images, that's the whole point of the copy and paste thing that I'm doing.
I'm also not simply releasing the files to prepress.
I take the images which are assembled roughly into Indesign layouts by our designers as oversized high resolution package shots.
I copy them out, paste them into Photoshop and then layer and drop shadow them before placing them back into Indesign as flattened EPS files at 100%.
Seems like a RAM/hardware issue to me. Was just wondering if maybe someone else had run into this and come up with a solution.
Coming in here and having people tell me that copying and pasting is abnormal seems a bit odd and has me wondering what I could do differently.
Writing the Indesign file to a PDF is not a solution to my problem.
I'm aware that I can save the Indesign pages out as an EPS or PDF or simply edit the original file, but as I said before, that adds many steps to the process.
Anyway, thanks for your help Marian. I guess I'll dig around the forums some more.

  • Urgent Help Needed! .....key locked in repeating mode?

Help please -I've done something stupid but I don't know what. Somehow the 'period' key on my keyboard is locked in a repeating mode and all sorts of complications have resulted...
    Briefly here's what happened:
I was writing in InDesign CS when apparently I hit some combination of keys because all of a sudden the 'period' key went nuts typing periods.............. row after row after row. I tried to stop it but could not. I closed out of the document and by not saving changes was able to return to my original text. But whenever i tried from then on to type anything, the period key just takes off, regardless of applications running or not.
I've found I can control the speed of the repeating by using my mouse system controls. I've slowed it down enough to where I can navigate some but I can't type anything, even a password because faster than I can type the machine inputs one or more periods and the password is rejected.
I've restarted multiple times to no result. I've tried resetting the PRAM but the machine will not.
With no applications running, when I can get the desktop open, a file is selected. If I try to select another file the highlighting moves to the selected file for a moment then jumps right back to the previous one. If I trash that file, the selection just moves to another?
The problem is cross user too - I have two user files on the machine and the same thing happens regardless of which user file I'm working in.
I've searched Mac help and can't find anything about repeating keys but that seems to be what's happening - the period key is stuck on if that makes sense.
I've a major project to complete this weekend... PLEASE HELP!
The problem is on my MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo. Obviously I'm writing this on my desktop backup machine.

The problem is cross user too - I have two user files on the machine and the same thing happens regardless of which user file I'm working in.
That points to s 'system-wide' issue.
    Try resetting your SMC.

Also, you could try booting from your install DVD and see if it does it there. If it does not, it's more than likely a software issue and an Archive and Install should fix it.

  • How can I format my manuscript for my upcoming book?

How can I format my manuscript for my upcoming book with adobe in design?

"Manuscript" ≠ "book". Are you writing in InDesign itself, or do you use a regular word processor and intend to hand this over to a book designer?

  • Speeding up a Flash animation in Captivate 5.5

    Hi,
I created an animation in Flash 5.5 and imported it into Captivate 5.5. The animation simulates cursive writing, so I set the FPS to 70 in order to look like normal writing. Unfortunately, since Captivate is defaulted to 30 fps, the animation plays slowly.
Is there any way to increase the speed of a single animation in a slide?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, but either way (setting the fps high or low in Flash), Captivate will render it at the moderate speed of 30 fps. I'm thinking that I'm just going to have to recreate the flash animation so that it appears faster at 30 fps. That's something I'm going to have to do when I actually create the animation.
    Thanks...

  • Tracing on  ibook

Is it possible to have the students trace on the ibook ? (similar to a cursive writing app ?) .
My idea is to create a textbook that would also allow students to practice writing ...this is ofcourse intented for very young kids learning to  write .
I would appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks !

At this time that interactive ability does not exist. However, it is a good and noble idea. Please send feedback to Apple about your idea. Good luck.  - Fabe

  • Indesign wont start due to lack of writing permissions to the settings file!

My Indesign CC2014 refuses to start.
I get an errorwindow saying "Indesign couldn't start because you lack writeing permissons to the Indesign settings file. Correct the problem and restart Indesign."
    Where is that file located?
I have no problem with the other CC-programs, they run just fine!
    Anybody encountered this problem?

See Replace Your Preferences  for folder locations and Cant launch new inDesign CC | Adobe Community  for directions for setting the permissions on Mac. Procedure is similar on Windows.

  • How many scripts (as in writing systems) are supported by InDesign?

I am trying to find a definitive list of scripts (as in writing systems) supported by InDesign. Is that available somewhere? These are the scripts I am interested in:
    Arabic
    Armenian
    Bengali
    Braille
    Canadian Syllabics
    Chinese
    Cherokee
    Cyrillic
    Devanagari
    Ethiopic
    Georgian
    Greek
    Gujarati
    Gurmukhi
    Hebrew
    Japanese
    Kannada
    Khmer
    Korean
    Lao
    Latin
    Malayalam
    Mongolian
    Myanmar
    Oriya
    Sinhala
    Tamil
    Telugu
    Thai
    Tibetan

Yeah, I do understand that Ge'ez/Ethiopic script covers many languages - but quite a few East African minority languages written in Ge'ez that are not Amharic or Tigrinya use forms/"houses"/etc. not in the Unicode spec. The same is true of minority languages in Myanmar - don't assume you can typeset Karen once you have "Myanmar" in your list of supported languages!
When you say "out of the box" do you really mean that? Most of the languages in that list that will work without plugins etc. require specialized fonts. The glyph coverage of the fonts that Adobe gives away with ID or the Creative Suite is extensive, but won't include most of your required languges. But, assuming you already have the fonts, and assuming that you know where to find the World-Ready Composer, then anything in that list that is not right-to-left (or vertical) should at least render correctly in ID. Mind you, "render correctly" doesn't help you if your Burmese translator doesn't key in zero-width spaces, for example.
I think that this may well be why there is no Adobe master-list of supported languages that is easy to find; it's because It Is A Very Complicated Issue. I've been doing typesetting in a list of languages much like yours for the last decade, and even if Adobe's type rendering engine handles fonts-built-according-to-Unicode-spec (e.g. Lao), there is significant variation in font development techniques, font modification by people writing in minority languages, keying order, and personal translator keying preferences. But if you find that list, post it! I will be surprised, but not shocked, if it exists somewhere.

    Mateo

  • Writing in Arabic in InDesign CS3

A customer asked us to reproduce a card in Arabic.
We have the scan of the card in .jpg
Now, I enabled Arabic in the keyboard layouts,
in International inputs and I do have arabic fonts that work.
The problem I have (I am only able to recognize Arabic letters, I do not speak Arabic)
is that even if the text is right aligned, the characters are added from the right,
not the left. In other words, the text is right aligned but as I add characters
they add themselves to the right of the characters that's already there.
    How do I do this?
P.S. I noticed in Keyboard viewer (Mac OS Menu) that the Arabic letters are only shown
in one form (individual letters) and I know that in Arabic letters are written differently whether
there are in front, in the center or at the end (left) of the word. How do I know which character to choose if I'm not Arabic!
    Thanks

There is this small utility software that will enable non Adobe ME applications to accept Arabic text. Just type your short Arabic text in arPIX pro, then copy and paste the text into InDesign. Text will stay as text after pasting in InDesign.
    Software is found here http://www.grapheast.com/ge-software/cp.php?id=99

  • Crashing Indesign writing 5 letters

    Hi,
I'm trying to write this 5 letters combination:
    ÌÍ5GÓ
Always causes the crash of indesign.
Just write this in a new document with the text instrument.
I have test it with indesign CC 2014 and indesign CS6 (italian versions), with mac and windows...always crash.
There is an hack to write this without crashing indesign?
This text is present in a big document that I need to merge, so I can't create outline of it.

Ok, ho capito dove è il problema. Cambia i dizionari in Proximity, e togli Hunspell. Ero quasi certo fosse un problema di dizionario.. ed in effetti è quello.
Ne approfitto per ricordarti che esiste anche un gruppo italiano di InDesign..

    AdobeGuru
PS.. for the english people reading this conversation, the problem is in the HUNSPELL dictionary. Changing it in the preferences and choosing the old (and wise) Proximity, InDesign doesn't crash.

  • How do I use an Edge Animate project with SVG files in InDesign for DPS output?

Is there any way to include an Edge Animate web content using .svg files in InDesign for output to DPS?
Edge Animate works great with InDesign, except for when you're using SVG files. I've worked with SVG files on the web successfully (writing .htaccess files and such), but it seems like InDesign doesn't like them.
This is pretty important because I don't want to have to design multiple renditions on the DPS suite. Currently I have it setup as a PDF format (DPS) and that scales all of the vector-based type perfectly. It would be wonderful if the animations could also be in a vector format so that when the iPad (3) users see the designs, they will scale naturally through the PDF framework.
    Any advice would be invaluable.
    Thanks!

    moved to the DPS forum....
