Custom Theme Books Printing

Does anyone know of who will print custom theme books created using Aperture ?
Thanks in advance!
George

No, the built-in ordering system only supports the standard sizes.
If you can find another online book printer that directly supports PDFs you should be OK, but you'd still have to set the size of your book to their set sizes.

  • What is your export process for printing custom-sized books?

I will be printing my first custom-sized book created in Aperture.
Anyone have much experience doing this?
I am assuming that exporting to pdf and then sending that file to print is the process, but I'm wondering if the compression will affect the image quality enough to be concerned for a 9''x9'' book?

    Lots of experience here.
I outsource albums either as single page or double spread. Unfortunately Aperture only allows single page export, not as a full spread (required by some printers).
Unfortunately the Export options are a little limited, so read on
If you click on the Print button for your custom sized book, you'll get a dialog. Choose the PDF button at the bottom and a bunch of options will appear.
If you just want to export a proof for a client to review, you can select Save PDF to Aperture. The files will import as 200dpi JPEGs / TIFFs depending upon the option you choose. You can then export to a sharing service / web album etc.
If you want to export at a different dpi then DON'T choose the Save PDF to folder as JPEG option... again you'll get just 200dpi images. So what you can do is choose the Save as PDF option. When you choose that it will export the whole book as single pages in a PDF, with the embedded JPEGs (fully quality jpeg 12) at 350dpi (I know as I've checked this)....
You can then do 2 things:
    1. For services that require a single pages, run an automator action to run through the PDF and export the images at your desired DPI and change the colour profile (eg sRGB). Your images are then exported to the same folder. Here's the action: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/117989/Save%20PDF%20to%20Folder%20as%20JPEG.zip
    2. For services that require a double page spread instead, run an automator action to run through the PDF, change the colour profile and DPI and then import to Aperture.
What I do is have an entirely separate project called Album Proofs and import all images into there. When the action runs, it will ask where to put the images - place them in Album Proofs. I then have a custom book size that is twice the width of the album you are creating (e.g. if making a 12x9, the size is 24x9) with no margins or spacing. Then create a template album (you can reuse by right clicking and selecting Duplicate Book) that has two images per page, each image taking up EXACTLY half of the page (again no margins or spacing). I then drag the images I imported into this template, then auto-fill unplaced images. Your images are then layed out as spreads... So now what you do is re-export using the Save as PDF print option. Then run the action described in 1 above.
Here's the action: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/117989/Save%20PDF%20to%20Aperture%20as%20JPEG.zip . If it doesn't work use the other action above and just import manually.
    Hope this helps

  • Building a custom web-to-print solution. Where to begin?

I am a web developer in an organization that deals with creating books. They don't actually print and distribute the books, but they create the book designs in InDesign where they then send them to the printers to be printed and distributed.
The organization is now interested in having users customize portions of books online (logo, certain text, particular images, etc), to be automatically sent to a printer and then distributed. The organization realizes that there are a number of web-to-print solutions that exist, but they are very much interested in creating an in-house, fully customized solution (for a number of reasons, they didn't find the other solutions satisfactory).
Essentially, the desired online experience for the user would be to go through a series of steps, filling in text inputs and uploading images to replace the templated portions of the InDesign file. Further, the user would see a preview of the inputted changes on the screen.
A lot of the burden would be on me developing the software necessary to make this work. I have a lot of experience in a number of programming languages, but have very little experience in the web-to-print industry (as well as little experience in InDesign).
If we were to create a fully customized web-to-print solution in house, where would I begin in finding out how best to implement a solution like this? If one with experience could provide a list of high-level steps needed for implementation or even a bullet list of items to research, I would be extremely appreciative.
Note that we are not interested in actually printing the books, but sending the fully created print-ready design files to the printers for print and distribution.

  • Book printing - Unique Workflows? - Cross-Posted from Aperture forum

(Cross-posted. I think this post might be of interest to iPhoto users as well)
I am exploring the book printing features in Aperture. My goal was to build the book in Aperture and get this into iPhoto so that I could use MyPublisher to print the book. MyPublisher currently has a 50% off coupon for orders over $50. iPhoto needs their plugin to upload to MyPublisher instead of Apple when the BuyBook button is chosen. (code is MAC2550 - good though Dec 31). The design features in Aperture are rudimentary at best. It's simple to customize the design for photo placement, adding and deleting photos, resizing, etc. The type design features are not simple to customize, though. However, with patience a suitable design can be made. You can add and delete text boxes at will but these will always default to the template's built in style. I continually had to reformat the type by right clicking on the selected text and applying my preferred style. One trick when cutting and pasting text is to place the cursor one letter in from the beginning of a preformatted line, select the remaining text and paste - this will pick up the current style rather than default to the template default. Then delete the leftover first character of the line. From Aperture I printed the book to PDF, being sure to choose letter size and borderless paper option. Once book is printed to PDF I opened in Acrobat and "saved as" to PNG. In the PNG options I chose 600ppi (the default of 300ppi might have been just fine for quality, not sure). Saving to PNG creates an individual file for each page. In testing Apple's Preview software for this I found it would make a nice PNG - but of just one page at a time. I then imported all PNG pages into iPhoto. Within iPhoto create a book. I used "Modern Lines" with double sided pages. To create the cover (it's actually a label that is adhered to the linen hard cover book) I had to import the actual cover photo used in Aperture to recreate a new design based on the "Modern Lines" template. I then recreated my pages using the template. The key step being to assign the single photo page design for each page. For each page I dropped in the corresponding PNG file which included all type and images created previously in Aperture. One minor point when adjusting the placed PNG images in the iPhoto template is the option to fit photo to frame size (an option when right clicking on the photo). When fit photo is selected the image gets resized very slightly. I opted not to use this feature as I thought the resizing might compromise quality. I then clicked on the "buy book" button and the file was assembled and sent to MyPublisher. Since I had the 50% coupon I opted for the leather bound book option and ordered two 24 page books for $53.74 which included $9.98 standard FedEx fee. As for quality I'll have to wait and see. I'll post back once books are in hand.

It is important to realize there are two aspects to an index.
    1) Topics
    2) Page References
Topics have no relation to the text of the actual document. Topics can
be imported from one InDesign document to another. Also, creating topics
from a list of text is trivial. Just type all the words (or place them
from a text document or Word doc) and then press Ctrl+A to select all of
them and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+[, then delete the text.
Page references, however are not as simple. These have to be created at
each place in the text where you want the page to be referenced it the
index. This *can* in fact be done Word if you are using the text from
    the Word document.
What you really have to watch out for is that when you want to create a
page reference you have the "Reference" radio button selected in the
index panel. Otherwise you will just be creating a topic. It is best to
work with hidden characters turned on so you can see and make sure
InDesign created an index marker in the text after you created your page
    reference.

  • IPhoto Book Print - Rejected

    Sirs
Could you please help me with an issue that I currently have with iPhoto.
As a Christmas Present for my 6 year old daughter, I have created an iPhoto book of our recent trip to EuroDisney. I completed the book and purchased it via the Apple Store in iPhoto.
However, I have today received an email stating as follows:
    To Our Valued Apple Customer:
It appears that when your order was submitted to Apple, an error caused the
image file to be unreadable or unprintable. As a result, Apple is unable to
process your order and you will not be charged. We recommend the following
      before submitting your order:
      1. Update your software.
      2. Restart your computer.
      3. Make sure all applications are closed.
      4. Open iPhoto or Aperture.
      5. While all other applications are closed, preview your print product as a
      PDF.
      6. Resubmit your order.
While previewing and resubmitting your order, make sure all other applications
are closed. For instructions on how to update your software, refer to:
Mac OS X - Updating your software
      <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1338>
I have checked the version of my MacBook - it is OS X 10.7 and I have checked the version of my iPhoto - it is 9.1.5. When selecting purchase in iPhoto, it is stating that I need to upgrade to 9.2.3. However, when I attempt to check for new updates in iPhoto itself, it is stating that my version is the latest version. Furthermore, checking for software updates via the Apple logo does not bring up any update for iPhoto nor does any updates in my Application Store.
It seems as if I require an update but there are no ways in which I can update this.
Could someone please advise / assist as I desperately want to get this book printed.
    Many Thanks
    Paul

If you update your system to 10.7.5 with the OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo) and OS X Lion 10.7.5 Supplemental Update updaters you can update your iPhoto version all the way to 9.4.2 thru the updaters availailable here: Apple - Support - Downloads-iPhoto 9.
But that's no guarantee that will fix the problem. If the problem image appears OK in a PDF preview of the book it should, as Larry pointed out, print out OK.  If it doesn't look OK in the PDF preview file export it out of iPhoto, open in Preview and export as a new, JPEG file.  Import it back into iPhoto, add to the book and replace the problem file with the newly created one.  Then create a new PDF file of the book and check that photo.

  • Custom themes: How do I create & edit an auto-text box?

    Hello
Continuing my exploration of custom themes
I have now found out how to make text boxes editable (control-command-option-T, that was carefully hidden!) and am now struggling with creating and editing 'auto text' boxes (not sure what their real name is in Keynote-speak)
    1) Creating new text boxes:
Let's take a simple theme like White. One of the Masters is Title + Bullets Left. Now let's assume I want to create two text boxes with bulllets - the existing on the left and another on the right. In PowerPoint it's pretty simple: highly text box; copy; paste; move & resize as needed. Well Keynote won't let me Copy so that's out. If I create a fresh Text box, I can mimick the indent levels, bullets, font attributes, etc. (long and painful) but it still won't work because it is not a placeholder text box (fixed size) but a regular text box (size depends on content).
    I'm sure I'm missing a trick!
    2) Edit auto-text boxes
Again, take any theme, say White again; If I choose a Master with a set text placement, say Photo Vertical, there is very little I can do with it: I can change text attributes and box size, but I can't touch the number of indentation levels for example. Then again what defines a text box as been 'double click here to edit' from a regular placeholder?
Overall I think I'm missing a whole editing 'avenue' regarding masters - Anyone care to guide me?
    Thanks!
Message was edited by: Moscool - typos!

You can set a text field to be multi-line and tick off the option to scroll
long text to have it automatically wrap, but you'll have a problem with the
first partial line, since form fields can only be rectangular. Another
problem might be the lines themselves, since you'll have to use a font size
that will fit them exactly, or it will look odd. I would suggest getting
rid of those lines altogether. They are not needed when filling in the form
electronically. It's a relic from printed out forms where people had to
    hand-write their answers.

  • CS5 & Manage Custom Sizes when printing.

Every time I try to “manage custom sizes” when printing, Photoshop “quits unexpectedly.” I am using Photoshop CS5, and Epson 7800, and Mac Yosemite. I’ve done all the updates, and reinstalled the driver. Any ideas on troubleshooting?

I am having the exact same problem with an Epson 3880.  I chatted with Epson support earlier today and they suggested that I uninstall the drivers and support software and reinstall.  I followed their instructions and the result was the same.  I did save my image file to a TIFF format and then opened it under Preview and when I used file->print and selected "manage custom sizes" it brought up the custom size menu as expected.  I also attempted this using Photoshop Elements 11 and the "manage custom sizes" menu appeared only in this case when I selected "Cancel" Elements crashed too.
It is not clear to me how to proceed with kglad's recommendation to "shutdown running processes in a logical manner".  I don't know what a logical manner might be.
Anyway, I have just done a complete uninstall of Photoshop CS5 and I'm about to reinstall it from the distribution DVD.  I think I'll test the "manage custom sizes" before I install the updates this time.
I'd sure appreciate it if you come up with anything, that you would post it here.  Thanks
So, I uninstalled Photoshop 5, restarted my iMac, and reinstalled Photoshop CS5.  When I attempted to Manage Custom Sizes, Photoshop CS5 blew up.
I find that I can add custom sizes and manage them from Preview and then use them in Photoshop.  So, I guess that will have to suffice until someone comes up with a fix.  Given that Photoshop CS5 is no longer supported that will probably be never.
Post here if something better comes along.

  • HT1338 I can see my photos in iphoto but can't email them, edit them or print them....help please!

I can see my photos in iphoto but can't email them, edit them or print them....help please!

First, what is the formatting of the external hard drive?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled). You can determine it by selecting the EHD and typing Command + i.
If it isn't formatted to that you should move the library off of it and reformat.
The "!" is an indication that the file path to the original file has been broken  So make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Aperture and Custom Sized Books

I am starting with my own little publishing company – private, precious coffetable books. I have my own printer/bookbinder, i.e. I don‘t want to use any of the affiliated online printers that Aperture offers plug-ins for. As of now I would work my layouts with InDesign and work the fotos with Photoshop but I am very interested in the automation and integration of Aperture. So here is my main concern.
Is it possible to create my very own templates, i.e. overall format, grids of fotos, text, other elements? I found this question in this forum from 2008 and was wondering, if by now and with Aperture 3 this shouldn’t be possible and easily so. Maybe there is even a tutorial somewhere.
    Thanks for your help. Goso

This site Customizing Aperture Books might be  some help. There is lot you can do in Aperture itself as far as customizing book layouts before you need to resort to creating your own templates.

  • Aussie created Iphoto book printed in the US?

I live in Australia and have created my iphoto book on my computer here but would like to have my photo book printed in the US and shipped to my parents for Christmas.
Is there anyway I can do this?
    Thanks.

    Greetings,
The last time I saw a question on this topic it was a bit over 2 years ago so the answer may have changed but yes, Canadian book orders are printed in Canada.  As far as taxes, what you see in the order window is the total for the book in your region.
To find out for sure before you order, contact Apple Store Customer service for Canada and indicate you want to ensure that the total dollar amount indicated in the order window is indeed what you will be charged (I would assume it is otherwise there would be lots of people yelling about it).
    Cheers.

  • NW2004s: Assigning a custom theme to a web dynpro running in the portal

    The situation is as follows:
Some web-dynpros (for java) have a custom theme, a theme which is <b>not</b> the default theme of the portal or  the default theme for web-dynpros in general.
In NW2004 this worked as follows:
When starting a web-dynpro in the portal it checked if it was started with the right theme. If <b>not</b> the exit plug of the WD interface view was called with an Url of the WD application plus a parameter for the right theme.
This is the famous parameter sap-cssurl.
For that parameter there are some values possible:
    1) sap-cssurl=http://<host>:<port>/irj/portalapps/com.sap.portal.design.urdesigndata/themes/portal/mytheme
    2) sap-cssurl=http://<host>:<port>/irj/portalapps/com.sap.portal.design.portaldesigndata/themes/portal/mytheme
    3) sap-cssurl=http://<portal>:<host>/webdynpro/resources/sap.com/tcwddispwda/global/SSR/themes/mytheme
The first 2 are locations of the portal environment, the last one is a location of the WD runtime environment.
As I noticed this must be a full qualified absolute Url including host and port.
This works in NW2004 for web dynpro's running standalone <b>AND</b> in the portal.
    Now for NW2004s:
The 3 variants of the parameter sap-cssurl work for web dynpro's running standalone.
But now for web dynpro's which are integrated in the portal:
The exit-plug with an Url is not possible anymore, this leads to the runtime error:
<i>com.sap.tc.webdynpro.services.exceptions.WDRuntimeException: Exit-Plug must no be triggered with an URL when running in portal. Use portal navigation instead to navigate to another application!</i>
Okay, as a first workaround I tried the portal navigation,
but somehow the supplied parameter sap-cssurl has no effect.
The code for that in the on-startup plug of the WD component:
    WDPortalNavigation.navigateAbsolute(
      PCD_ID,
      WDPortalNavigationMode.SHOW_INPLACE,
      null,
      null,
      WDPortalNavigationHistoryMode.NO_HISTORY,
      null,
      null,
      "theme_set=X&" + theme,
       theme,
       false,
       true
I used there absolute portal navigation and the  parameter (sap-cssurl=...) is part of the <b>launcher parameter</b> and the <b>business parameter</b> in the call to <b>WDPortalNavigation.navigateAbsolute</b>.
But as I wrote above, this has no effect on the theme.
In the I-View the parameter "Supply portal theme" is set to <b>NO</b>, otherwise the parameter "sap-cssurl" is supplied twice (this can be seen in the poroperties of the web-page in Internet Explorer).
What I tried afterwards was setting the parameter sap-cssurl hardcoded in the "Application parameters" of the I-View. This doesn't work either.
My question is: Should this be anyway possible for a NW2004s portal?
    Did anyone successfully implement this?
    Kind regards,
                Erich Lind

    Hi Erich,
I am facing the same problem. I am on 04 s and couldnot implement the custom theme to a web dynpro running in the portal. When I run the web dynpro app as stand alone, the custom theme applies fine. But when in portal, it takes the standard theme.
Was wondering if you figured this out.
    Thanks

  • How do I leverage a custom theme for Outlook 2013?

Microsoft has a problem. They use the term "theme" in Office in 2 different ways: 1) the 3 background colors you can choose of the Office applications and 2) a collection of colors, fonts, and layout that can be customized and defined by the user
    for the applications.
I know how to create a theme in PowerPoint and save it as a default for all new presentations. Allegedly you can you this across Office applications but this is where it breaks down (as far as my user experience goes).
I've created a theme in PowerPoint. It has my custom colors. I want to use that same collection in Outlook.
I can apply it on a email by email basis (Options menu for an email), but I want the default email (new or reply) to use that custom theme. I see my theme in the drop down menu under a heading of Custom, but there isn't a way to set it as default
    (behavior differs from PowerPoint here).
So I look under the Outlook File menu, then Options and select Mail. You can change stationary, but the custom theme isn't an option there.
Then there is Styles under the Format Text menu when in a new email. There are color options and font options, but again, no way to leverage the work I did in creating the custom theme.
Searching on customizing themes for Outlook only gets me answers on the first use of the word theme, not the latter.
Is there no way to you the theme I created for Outlook 2013?

Its very simple - if you want a product that remains consistent and does not change its layout every few years, that is fully customizable, and will remain being supported by subsequent operating systems, then get an open source product running in an open
source OS. It seems that you can no longer rely on MS to provide consistency, stability, or support for their own products.
When will MS realise that customer familiarity with their products is their intellectual property, like branding, which you would never trash every five years. Imagine that MS wanted to change their name to a new company name, or their Outlook brand to Inlook
    - it would never happen. So why is thee trade getup and arrangement changing so often and against what their customers want? Is it to justify thee new products? Maybe with cloud and 365, they will finally be happy and stop mucking about with what works (after
they change everything back to '95 /XP format?).

I am trying to delete pages I have crated in numbers, but can only see them in print preview. Without print preview I do not see them. How can I delete these pages, but keep others before and after?

    Hi Crushed,
Numbers doesn't have pages. It has a canvas that holds objects such as tables and charts.
Drag the objects from the bottom of the canvas onto the white space above. That will reduce the number of "pages" (sheets of paper) that will print.
