Damaged files or extension problem

When I copie my files, which I create at home, on the server at my work location (I am using a Maxtor external HD). And I'm opening these files, a lot of the images are being damaged. Mostly -eps and -tif files.
However when I go home and open them again, there's no problem.
The systems and software at home and at the work location are the same. Except for the fact that I don't have a 'server' or network at home. (the server has a windows-platform)
Maybe someone can help me solve the problem?

Hi, how do you mean "damaged"? Are the files not all there (a comparison of the size on your hd vs. the file on the server will tell you)? Are the files' extensions being lost? (In the latter case, the file is all there, but the name is altered). Is it something else entirely?

It sounds like you are getting an error from iTunes when you launch it. I would try the troubleshooting in this article named:
iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

Start with troubleshooting for 3rd party plug ins section, then the rest of the article if needed:
Start iTunes in Safe Mode
Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any interference from plug-ins or scripts not manufactured by Apple.
Hold down Shift–Control while opening iTunes. You should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.
Click Continue.
See if the issue you're experiencing persists in Safe Mode.
If you have the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the "Create a new user account" section. If you don't experience the same issue, follow these steps to remove third-party plug-ins.

PP3.0 --Problem Project Manager Trim Software Damages Files

I have a problem that occurs when a Premiere Pro 3.0 project is trimmed using the project manager software.
It occurs mostly with non-captured files- with wav files such as narration, music, and sfx (they can be Cd 44.1 files and mono and stereo tracks). Sometimes, it happens with graphics files. This problem occurs about half the time the project manger software is used.
In an affected project, there may be any where from 2 to 25 damaged files. The error message that we get in the trimmed project is “unsupported file formats”.
When we open the non-importable audio files in another application like Sound Forge, they are identified as Raw PCM files. These Raw PCM files frequently have errors-- like random noises. The ones that don’t have errors can be saved as a wav file and then it can be re-linked and used.
It is happening on more than one computer. These computers all have dual 32 bit Xeon processors and at least 3 Gigs of memory.

Could you give me a little more details about using a file manager?
I usually think of a file manager as selecting some files to keep and some file to delete. I don't think that this will work. Many of the files use only a small portion of the larger file. Are you suggesting to keep the larger files even though they may be less thn 5% of the total size?

CFHTTP problem - is file-type extension required

I have the following simple code to check a value from another server:

The URL that is shown above returns nothing when using it within CFHTTP. If I change the URL to http://www.google.com or whatever I get the code of that page assigned to my theContent variable as expected
From a browser, the URL used in the cfhttp function above works fine. The request returns a simple HTML file with the following code from which I need to pull the agents_available data:

I tried your suggestions. Used Firefox with FireBug and LiveHTTP Headers and nothing appears out of the ordinary except the Content-Length which is always 0. It's not being redirected. The response is 200 OK.
i.e.:

Note that there are two methods I've used - 1 used commentd out in this code. If i change the url in the cfhttp function to ANYTHING else I get the expected result - goog.com, our site, cnn.com, whomever but not from this URL which clearly works from a browser.

ITunes 7.0 Gap feature damaged files on Ipod, sync problems

After upgrading to iTunes 7.0, the remove gap feature created many songs that will no longer play on the iPod then just skip through an entire album. I upgraded to 7.1 and tried to delete the songs on the iPod and resend. I could not do anything to replace the damaged files. Is there something I can do?

As a happy user of the Matrox RT.X2 for many years, and later an equally happy user of a Matrox MXO2, I can say from experience that it is highly unlikely that this problem has anything to do with the Matrox hardware!
Can you open a new blank project, and save it?
If you cannot import your faulty project into a new project, can you import the sequence from your faulty project?
Have you tried clearing the Media Cache, clearing your preferences, etc. - all among the techniques used to resurrect a Premiere Pro project that has gone bad???

Unable to install the Novell File Upload extension to upload directories

Using Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 7 I'm unable to install the Novell File
Upload extension to upload directories.
As per the pop-up help page, I've added
extensions.install.requireBuiltInCerts in about:config and set it to
false but that has made no difference, even after restarting the browser.
I've also tried this with Firefox 9.0.1 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard
(10.6.8) - unsupported I know - with the same result.
Do I really have to use Internet Explorer? Urgh!

Acrobat 9 pro seems to be damaging files, why?

I tried searching for information. but haven't been able to find a prior discussion that helps.
I have been using acrobat 9 pro on windows vista x64. I build files by dragging and dropping pages from one file to another. This is so that instead of having 12 files for a years worth of one bill, I have one.
This has happened more than once, so I did a full scan of my hard drive looking for bad sectors in case the problem was the file being written onto a bad sector.
What happens is that I open a file that has been fine and some of the pages are blank, both the thumbnail and the page. When this has happened before each re-open produces more blank pages.
The current file is 30,824 K.
Any idea why this happens and what I can do to prevent it?

I am not sure how to do this given what I am doing.
Scenario 1: I have scanned a bunch of pages into a single pdf file and at my leisure move the pages to different files. Not sure how I would use insert pages in this situation.
Scenario 2: I open a monthly statement and move the pages into another file containing previous months statements. Would I have to actually save the file first before I could follow your suggestion?
Is there anyway of determining what fonts I need in order to check if I have them?

To test the font issue, try using insert pages to add a file to another one rather than the drag and drop. There could be a bug in the latter, or just that fonts don't work well with that process, particularly if you do not have the fonts on your system.

I was working on a file in indesign when my indesign crashed. Now when I try to open that file it says "Cannot open. The file is damaged and cannot be recovered." Here is the major problem. Not only did this crash affect this document but somehow damaged every document on my desktop. Every indesign document says the same thing when opening. I've tried to open the documents on other computers and they give the same message. Help! I'm about to lose days worth of work.

Joel has, of course, in a backhanded way, asked if you have backups (and by now you probably know the correct answer to that question should always be "of course I do.").
Guessing that you don't, and if nothing else will work to recover -- and one thing that has worked for me once in the past was to open as a copy, which nobody has yet suggested -- then you should evaluate the cost of rebuilding as opposed to paying $200 each for Q2ID and ID2Q from Markzware if you also have Quark Express. Opeing the damaged files in Quark, then opeing the Quark files in ID often will work to mostly or even fully recover your work. If you don't own a Quark license, Markzware will do it for you for about $200 per file, I think, no charge for failures. Depending on the number of files it might even be cost effective to buy a Quark license.

"File Import Failure Unsupported format or damaged file" in CS6 but fine in CS5.5

Hello All.
Recording in Pal DV AVI from Sony Z5U with MRC1K compact flash recorder.
Imported files to computer using the Sony utility, and also tried dragging and dropping.
Some files import to Premiere Pro CS6.03, but others give "File Import Failure: Unsupported format or damaged file,".
The files that do import show up as 4:3 and I have to modify / interpret footage to get them to show as 16:9,
However, these same files play back just fine in Windows Media Player.
Intriguingly these files import just fine to Premiere Pro CS5.5, and also show up correctly as 16:9.
I can't figure out why some files import into CS6 and others don't....
Anyone else seen this kind of behavior?
(Normally I record in HDV and I've never had problems importing from MRC1K into Premiere, but the client specifically requested DV files for their ease of editing...)

PS When I use the DV recoverer utility on these files they import just fine into CS6....

OK, here's the video that imports OK into CS6.03 but that Premiere CS6.03 sees as 4:3:
And here's the one that won't import into CS6.03 but is happily opened by CS5.5 and correctly seen as 16:9:

How to use Terminal to Find or Locate files without extensions?

I'm conversant with the cli, but not a power-user. I've discovered a fairly large number of audio files, across dozens of sometimes nested folders, that (somehow) lost their '.aif' extension and now appear as Unix Executable Files. Upon appending said files with the proper extension, they are perfectly normal audio aif's.
My Problem: using the Terminal, how can I search a directory tree to find those files *without* an extension, discriminating between files and folders, and then append the correct extension to only the files?
I've tried a number of queries, mostly built around the idea of using 'filename.*', but for some reason searching for an extension omission (as opposed to a specified string) isn't so simple.
The following: ls -al *.
Brings up 'No such file or directory'
And the following ls -al .*
Brings up files AND directories
I need o discriminate between files and directories, finds all files without extensions, and rename them with the appropriate extension.
Can anyone help?

The following will find files without a file extension in the current working directory and any sub-directories->
find . -type f ! -name "*.*"
If you are confident that the files found are the appropriate audio file (in this case aif) then you could->
find . -type f ! -name "*.*" -exec mv {} {}.aif \;

CS3 "Unsupported format or damaged file"

Hi,
I have took clip with sound only in my DXCAM, While import it to my project I get the following erroe message:
"Unsupported format or damaged file" I can hear the clip in the camera and also in the application received with the camera
XDCAM EX ClipBrowser V2.6, Of course I have installed the update 3.2.0for XDCAM.
Does any one can have any idea how to solve it?

Now I start working more with this kind of files and to my sorrow despie the SC3 is updated
I get again the same error message.

Were your PDF documents originally the email attachments opened in Apple Mail on your iPad/iPhone? Apple Mail may have corrupted your PDF documents.

Constant 'damaged file message when it isn't

Please help, I have an IMAC, and I just cant seem to get Adobe Reader to work write. Now I get a damaged file message on a PDF both emailed to me anda document I downloaded, when I know for a fact there is nothing wrong with the document at all because it works on my IPAD and PC? HELLLLLLPPP

Do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can skip the step to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue.

Keynote damaged file

I have started using the new keynote. I've had many problems with some animation changes, tolls disapearing but globaly, I thought the application was more stable . That was untill a several Gb lecture which I have been working on for several days with photos, videos, just opens with a grey rectangle and a cross for each picture......The file is reduced from several Gb to 8 Mb, I can still see my slides in the organizer but cannot do anything with the presentation. This has happened many times with the previous version and the new keynote still hasn't corrected this bug which is at least 5 years old......I can probably count in weeks the time this application has made me loose.. Anybody knows how to solve this issue so I don't redo everything one more time??????

The crash has happened again... Using the previous version doesn't make any change: The bug destroys all the pictures and videos of the presentation! If you don't have a backup, you have to start all over again! This means having a hard disk running all the time and saving every 10 mn with time machine to make sure you don't have to redo too much. This is not what I would advertize, as you do, a "stable and reliable version". It's incomplete, dangerous and time consuming. The iworks team contacted me, I sent 2 damaged files and since then....NOTHING!
The previous version started to be very unstable with the change to mavericks so how can you get back to the old version of MacOs, of keynote? What do you do with the files that have been opened with the new version that cannot be opened any more with a previous version.
Why isn't there a box you can tick saying "That didn't help me at all"???? To make sure there is never a negative feedback.?
These bugs have existed with Keynote for at least 5 years with multiple crashes when you manipulate large files with embedded video.
It has never been corrected and the new version is worse than all the previous ones!
