Dangerously hot power supply burnt my hand and Apple don't care!

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. The 85W Mag Safe Power Adaptor got so hot yesterday that it burnt my hand when I went to pick it up! This is NOT good. I am VERY concerned that this product is dangerous and could catch fire or, worse, seriously hurt someone. I found my two year old putting her hand on it just before I picked it up which would have meant a trip to hospital!!
I couldn't get hold of anyone at Apple. I emailed my account manager in Ireland but got a message saying he was away.
So I sent an email to Apple's customer service email asking if they could you tell me what temperature is acceptable and whether or not they have experienced similar problems with other customers.
Unbelievably I got this response!!! Not exactly what I would call responsible.

The OP is talking about the power adapter getting hot not his MacBook Pro.
The design of the MacBook Pro allows for the main unit to dissipate heat from the CPU (the aluminium unibody is essentially a giant heat sink). Under CPU intensive operation the body of your Mac will get warm to hot, but not to the point of causing bodily harm. If it does, contact Apple ASAP.
If the Mac is properly ventilated when in use and is placed on a desk / table/ lap table thingy or similar, you shouldn't feel the heat being passed through the main body of your Mac.
Having had a previous model of 17" MBP, I found it too big to use on my lap so bought a laptop stand and have subsequently used all my notebooks on the stand and never even use my latest 13" MBP on my lap.

My 27" Imac (A1312/EMC2390) keeps shutting down unexpectedly with no warning or "screen of death". So far I reset the SMC, and zapped the PRAM. I even replaced the power supply but the problem continues. My error and system logs seem unhelpful too. Can anyone help me out?

You can get a shutdown like that if the computer gets too hot. Make sure the air intakes on the bottom and the exhaust vent on the top are clean and are not blocked by something in your workspace like papers or the back of the computer being too close to part of the furniture. You need a good six inches (15cm) of clearance between the exhaust slot and other objects or surfaces.
Anti-virus/internet security software, especially the "pay for" kinds, can increase operating temps. So can third-party backup software furnished with many "name-brand" external hard drives.
Fan motors and/or temperature sensors can fail. If you have the original grey disks that shipped with your iMac, find the on that has Apple Hardware Test (AHT) and run it. If you have a failed heat sensor or fan motor, it will detect it with an error code containing "SNS" if it's a bad sensor or "MOT" if its a bad fan motor.

  • 3750X, Dual Power Supply, 1 in 110V and 1 in 208V

I have a Cisco WS-C3750X-12S swith with dual C3KX-PWR-350WAC power supplies that are both currently connected to 110V PDUs.  We are being forced to migrate over to new 208V PDUs and I would like to know if it is possible to run this switch with one power supply connected to a 110V feed and the other power supply connected to a 208V feed?
I assume this will work as both power supplies are auto sensing and are rated for any input between 110V - 240V.  Would there be any potential issues with this configuration?
This will only be needed for one week while the second 208V PDU is connected.  I will need to migrate one PS to 208V, wait for the second PDU to be installed in my rack, and then move the second PS to 208V.
I was hoping to be able to migrate without having to reboot the switch as this would require a maintenance window and downtime for an important connection.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
That should be fine, I've seen customers actually run this in production for quite some time.  You should be able to migrate this without downtime as long as you are not running a large number of POE devices that are reliant on XX amount of power at one time.

  • Is replacing power supply more than plug and play?

From all input I gather although my G5 is not the right serial for a free fix I probably have a power supply problem. Unless the inability to power on could be something else, I'm going to give you guys a little time to keep me from wasting some money. It's $100 to have my mac looked at here in Houston as far as I know and they wanted $150 to take a stuck CD out of it which gave me the courage to open her for the first time and it would seem to me I could install another power supply, but would like some feedback about pitfalls. T

I recently had a iMac power supply replaced under warranty. It is, apparently, a routine repair, and I had mine back in two days (including mail).
Power supply issues are easy to diagnose.
PRAM battery is the place to start, as it's the less radical solution.
Consider the power supply, a not-uncommon problem with vintage Macs. There's an easy way to find out. Make sure it's a time you're going to be able to monitor the machine.
    1. Turn on the eMac. Go to System Preferences/Battery Saver, and turn these settings all the way to the right, to "Never."
    2. Note the time, and leave your machine on until it shuts off. Note the time again.
    3. Continue turning it on and noting the time. If the amount of time the eMac stays on gets shorter and shorter, then you have a power supply issue. This is more common for older machines.
Stuck CD is another issue; that can be any number of things, including a fried logic board. If you've attempted all the tricks, an expert may be your main recourse.

  • Power supply Mini Mac G4 and Mini Mac intel

Is there a difference between the power supply of the Mini mac G4 and the intel one.
I have tried to connect the intel to the supply of the G4. But the mac does not start. I can't read the specs because i have not the supply of the intel with me.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes there is. After I returned my old G4 mini and exchanged for an Intel mini, I attempted to use my original power pack from my G4 mini as I intended to keep the new power pack as a spare. However, the Intel mini did not get sufficient power from the old power pack to turn on. When I looked at the voltage it was slightly different. (Not that I can remember the exact figures).
    Hope this helps.

  • I replaced the logic board and power supply in my iMac and it's still dead.

Recently lighting hit my friend's house and his iMac was plugged into an outlet. It did frie the power supply. I replaced it and the logic board. The first two LEDS on the logic board light up green so I know it's getting power. However it still wont boot. A white light flashes in the bottom right corner and the fan kicks on and then off. I've tried reseting the PRAM and SMC and now it wont do anything at all?

The strike could have written everything off in the computer or if the part still works it still could be damaged and cause hard to identify problems or fail within a short time.
rkaufmans advice holds true, either take in it for service or probably write it off on the insurance. It is quite likely it is beyond economic repair.
If the strike was close by, sometimes not too much gets damaged but a direct strike, the ones I have seen have wrote the machines off.
Also do you know the provinence of the replacement parts, have you seen them working and know they are good and a direct replacement?

  • Apple and ATT Don't Care...3 days and still haven't gotten a person to help

My original iphone since upgrading the firmware to 2.0 has sporatically but for many many hours at a time has stopped allowing incoming or outgoing calls. I have attempted to reach both ATT and Apple to get support. Here is cronology of my attemps to get help to fix my phone. I don't think apple or att care about their customers at this point. After being an att customer for 10 years i am now considering the new sprint service with the new samsung device since I can't get anyone to help me fix my iphone so i can actually make or receive a call.
    July 16th, 2008
11:30pm called att support 888 327 2610 and chose the option for "not able to send or receive calls"
spoke to an agent who said i would need to call back in when i got my bill.
    Jason Poersch - Supervisor
VRU...is routing to billing, not even to tech support
Tried to tell me to call apple support..but i asked if this was an att issue or apple he said it could be either..well i called att so why does att check it out before telling me to call apple
Said that I would need to call back when i got my bill to have it adjusted b/c they couldn't adjust it at the moment.
Asked for corporate phone number to log a complaint....Said to look it up on-line...when my phone isn't working.
Jason agreed to send the email for me to the corp complaints. I find it very odd that a phone company will not handle complaints via phone, but force you to send them in an email.
11:50pm...transferred to att support...message experience unusually high call volumes due to networking issues. (what time of the day is good to call when you cant get thru even at midnight???)
11:59pm David Hamrick in tech support answered
    * unaware of problems ...just normal call volumes ...even though they had a message on phone line
    * we cannot do any trouble shooting here at att at all..you have to call apple
    * David did a warm transfer at 12:01
Then however ..he said he would have to put me in the queue..as he was transferring me in..the vru said apple was closed and that i would need to call back during normal business hours!!!!
12:07 am I asked for a manager and David said a manager would tell me the same thing..I said I would still like to speak to a manager. He put me on mute and came back saying a manager would not be available but he can put me thru to voice mail. I said that after being on the phone for over a half an hour..that i would wait until at&t decide to help me. i needed my phone tonight..not another day. He said ok..and put me on hold.
    12:15 am Jerry Henry (mngr)...
He said that i would need to go to att for any troubleshooting on the phone...i said what about the network..had we ruled that out? after all u had a message on your vru indicating that you were having networking issues. I would think i deserve the courtesy of having someone rule that out before sending me to apple so i don't have to come back again if it does happen to be the network.
He called as well and was told to call back during normal business hours
12:30 am *earlier today...outage in this area
creating a ticket and will call me back in 1/2 hour..
12:46 am called me back..he has opened a ticket..they should text me and call me when working. Jerry to research apple hours. Jerry to call me at 6:30am with status.
    July 17th, 2008
6:30am ..no call from Jerry Henry on either phone number. My cell is again not able to send or receive calls.
9:22am...called 800 331 0500 again..chose options for support...they said they were transferring me to apple support.
*VRU..experience high call volumes and that they recommend calling back later....but I could hold and did...since it doesn't seem to matter what time of day I call..they are always experiencing high call volumes. .
9:40 am ..hung up as couldn't hold any longer
    11:55am called support again.
    * *VRU..experience high call volumes and that they recommend calling back later....but I could hold and did...since it doesn't seem to matter what time of day I call..they are always experiencing high call volumes. .
12:12 pm ...Shawna in Canada ..would not give any additional information to be able to identify her in the event of a follow-up or concern.
    * Also asked for her managers name so i had an additional reference for follow-up. She put me on hold ot go ask her manager if she could give me her managers name. Shawna returned to indicate that her manager said she could not give her manager's name.
    * I then asked to speak to the manager directly...and she indicated it would be a long wait but that she would get a manager and would check back with me while I waited.
12:18 pm ..put on hold while waiting for a manager
12:25 pm ...still holding ..no one has checked back with me yet
12: 41 pm still holding..no one has checked back with me yet
12:: 57 pm ..still holding..no one has checked back with me yet
1:06pm ..still holding..no one has checked back with me yet
If they cared..do you think they would respond at some point?

Based only on that, stop bugging Att. It's highly unlikely to be their issue.
Phone was working fine. You didn't change the sim, your plan, or any Att-related apparatus.
You update the phone's software. That's Apple's purview.
You've had sporadic functionality with the network, and there aren't widespread posts about Att's network dropping away from many people, so that points to the fault being on your individual unit.
You haven't mentioned if you've done a full software restore. If you haven't yet, you should try it. Then test it out before loading it back up with applications. Especially if you've jailbroken it.
If you have jailbroken it, it's all too easy to imagine one of the wild applications isn't compatible with 2.0...
If it works after the restore, re-install your apps one at a time, checking each time to see which one might be wrecking up your phone.
    Good luck.

my ipod touch 4th generation has files that i didnt back up because i didnt know i was supposed to. the when i tried to add one new file to my EMPTY itunes, all files are deleted, yes because i know i didnt back the files up and the files on my ipod arent in my itunes. so i cancelled adding the new file and all files

You want to transfer purchases from the iPod to your iTunes account.
Connect the device to iTunes but do not sync.
    Select File > Transfer Purchases.
This will copy the content purchased via iTunes on the iPod to your iTunes account.

  • I Love Logic Pro and I don't Care Who Knows it!

I don't understand the constant complaining in the forum lately about Logic, especially LP9. Apparently, the complainers are choosing to use their free time to cry, rather than spend it "fixing" Logic Pro.
I, for one, love Logic - especially LP9. I play guitar and have had a refreshing, fulfilling time plugging my guitar in, turning up the volume in LP9 or Mainstage and electrically declaring that "Rock and Roll ain't noise pollution"!
Logic isn't about plug-ins, overloads, busses, and all the other technical stuff. It's about creating music. Based on several negative posts, the complainers claim that you can't make music without 300 tracks, 1800 busses with reverb, and more RAM than an IBM supercomputer. Oh, and if you don't own 19 FireWire external drives, your computer will blow up.
I've programmed intricate beats in Ultrabeat, created complex echo synths, recorded vocals with several plug-ins, and added multiple guitar tracks with a MacBook Pro that has 2G of RAM. No overloads, no errors.
Will you get errors if you add 11,000 tracks, while 18 ReWire apps are running simultaneously during a recording session of a 200-piece orchestra? Maybe. But isn't Logic, and therefore music itself, really about "Four chords and the truth"?
My questions to the complainers are: If only one audio track was allowed in Logic, could you make compelling music? If so, how about with two? If so, why do you need 27, 94, or even more than just 10? Perhaps the complainers are using Logic as a crutch, rather than a tool.
Finally, whether you like Coldplay or not, one of their "band rules" is the understanding that "a computer is an instrument, not a recording device".

You folks really like these amps... been playing a long time and to me most of these software amp sims sound a bit lame, especially the low-end response. Some of the cleaner sounds are ok but the distortions are not happening. The external boxes (Pod, V-Amp...etc) sound better to my ears but none as good as a small mic'd amp.
    pancenter-
    Pancenter,
I appreciate you sharing the specifics of your experience. I agree, to some extent, that real amps have a unique sound compared to software ones. Now, amps aside, much of your sound depends on your guitar (hollowbody, solidbody, Humbuckers, ect.) So, if you're using a lot of distortion and not getting the response you need, it could be the guitar.
I really like LP9's amps because they sound great with my semi-hollow guitar. When I push up the distortion, overdrive, or any other heavy effect, my guitar gets a bit muddy whether I'm plugged into a real amp or LP9. So, changing guitars can also have a significant effect on your sound.
I've been especially impressed with the cleaner settings on LP9's amps. Before LP9, I was seriously looking at buying one or two more real amps and potentially some software plug-ins to get the sounds I was looking for. But, honestly, with LP9 I couldn't be happier and I have recommended it to several guitarists.
Ultimately, I guess it comes down to personal preference. But, that said, as a long-time guitarist, I can create some serious sounds in LP9.

  • 4 pin power supply

hello folks I am wondering what and why some mb's have the small 4 pin power supply for the cpu and others don't. I have two machines I have put together and one does and the other don't. Can't find the correct literature to satisfy my curiosity. please offer some insight.
    Thanks Paul

the msi nforce 2 powers the cpu of 12v and so has the 2x extra 12v feeds, and 2x earths
as the 20 pin plug has only 1x 12v feed
and 8a is the most load an atx lead should ever have
and as 8a is about a cpu load and the 12v does other jobs on the board they are needed
older boards ,and boards like the assus nforce 2 still use the 5v rail for the cpu
so dont need nor have it

  • Power Supply Temperatures Running Hot! Mac Pro shuts down.

    Hello,
First I will give machine/hardware specs of interest:
    2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (pre 2009)
    8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 (running 2 displays)
    Apple RAID Card/Controller
    SMC Version: 1.25f4
*venting dimensions around computer: top=18", left side=3", right side=3" and back=18".
    Software of interest currently running:
    OS X 10.5.8
    iStat Menu
    SMC Fan Control
My machine has been shutting down spontaneously and I suspect either CPU or power supply overheating. In the 5 instances this has occurred, the room was very warm (AC was not on) and I was running HandBrake with CPU at full and an iStat reading of 145 F. Ambient was 77 F and I was not reading power supply temps at the time. I figured for sure this must be a CPU overheating issue. However, just a few hours ago I had another shutdown. The room was warm again but I was not running Handbrake, but StarCraft II. I have played a lot of Starcraft II with no problems until tonight.
I decided, this time, to check the temps on my power supplies. Power supply 1 = 147 F, and #2 is at 178 F. After many hours of searching forums I have concluded that these are crazy hot temps! I immediately installed SMC Fan Control to attempt to increase the fan speeds. I was successful in increasing all fans except the power supply (stuck at 599rpm). I have now turned the AC on in the house and the Ambient is down to 70, PS #1 145 and PS #2 169. All of these temps are a result of and idle machine running a browser.
The following may or may not be an issue, however, leave no stone unturned. I currently have 12 external devices running on USB. 4 WD passport drives, 1 DVD writer, 5 WD powered drives plus the keyboard and mouse. Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
In all my forum searches, I just can't seem to answer some basic questions:
    1. Can an overheated power supply shut the system down?
    2. What are optimal (normal) running temps for Mac Pro's? (everyone seems to have opinions, but there doesn't appear to be a technical specification anywhere).
    3. I thought the fans, especially CPU fans, were supposed to kick in when the heat rises. Why are mine staying at minimal rpm's?
Finally, does it look like I need new power supplies? Fans?
This machine was put into service in March of 2008 and has done very intensive rendering for the film industry...long nights...rendering for days sometimes. It has been retired for over a year now and is used at a lesser degree.
Thanks for reading this long post! I appreciate any input you can provide!
    Other iStat reading of interest:
    Power Supply 1 voltage = 12.28 V
    Power Supply 1 current = 26.44 A
    Power Supply 1 power = 316.75 W

Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
    Put your peripherals on that.
Don't share the same circuit for A/C as the Mac Pro, and put the Mac on 1300VA UPS at least.
As for all those external drives.... I'd consolidate into a good SATA case or two.
And yes in summer run with 3 of the fans up around 900 rpm.

  • Power Supply and Graphics Card Question for HP Pavilion a6432p

    Hello!
I have the HP Pavilion a6342p, and I'm wanting to install an NVIDIA Graphics Card either 512MB or 1GB. However, I'm not sure what is the power supply to this model (most graphics cards are saying 300-350W supply required).
Can anyone tell me what is the power supply to this model, and what would be a good graphics card model to look at to upgrade my graphics card to with this model? I believe the expansion slots are PCI-Express, but I'm not sure on the power supply so I can get the right graphics card.
    Thanks!

No the 9100 is not just an integrated video chipset and is available in both AGP & PCI form.
The Antec is a good PSU but I would recommend getting something better such as the OCZ or Enermax as they have a higher +12v rail amp.
