DAQ collecting finite samples despite being set to continuous acquisition mode

Hello,
I've created a vi which reads data from one channel on my USB 6225 OEM device, displays the data to a chart, and writes the data to a .csv file using the write to spreadsheet file vi. The DAQ acquisition mode is set to Continuous Samples; however it behaves as if it were set to N Samples, as the number of data points written to my .csv file is equal to the number specified in the Samples to Read input.
I replaced the DAQmx Assistant vi with the Simulate Signal vi and observed the same behavior. Why does this happen?
Attached below is my vi.
Attachments:
chart time.vi ‏78 KB

When the acquisition mode is set to continuous samples, the samples to read input becomes the buffer size -- not the number of samples read. I expect the DAQ to collect samples until I stop the vi. This is the behavior I have always seen in the past, so don't know why it is any different this time.

• ITunes Only Burns At 8X (Despite Being Set At 16X)

Hi, I recently noticed that whenever I burn a CD with iTunes now, it burns rather slowly even though I have it set to burn at 16x. iTunes doesn't show what speed it's actually burning at but I figured it must be burning at 8x since it now takes about twice the normal amount of time to burn a disc. For example, it just took me approx. 7 min. to burn a CD with 16 tracks (56 min.). I decided to burn the same playlist (with the same CD-R media) using Burrrn with the speed set at 8x and sure enough it took about the same time (7 min.), confirming my suspicion that iTunes is burning at 8x (despite being set to burn at 16x). What would be the cause of this? I've even tried to set it at different speeds like 12x, 24x, etc. but it still seems to burn at 8x. Thanks for any help.

I also forgot to mention that whenever I burn with iTunes now a text file named GEAREXT.WOIDENT shows up on my desktop. This is what it reads (it's obviously information sent by iTunes to the burner):

• Vertical setting during continuous acquisition with NI5112

I need to change the current vertical range configuration during a continuous acquisition.
Is it possible without data loss?
Or I have to stop the acquisition?
Thanks for your answers.

Thank you Annette, your answer allows me to understand some details about PCI-5112 board.
I need to acquire continuously data at 2 Msample/sec for 10 minutes at least, without loss, and signal level can slowly change during the acquisition (es. a sinusoidal amplitude increasing from 0.5 to 2 V into 10 minutes).
It’s important to adjust the vertical setting due to use all the dynamic range.
I’ve used “niscope Fetch&Save Forever.vi”, performing a single channel continuous acquisition with 8-bit fetching data (“1 channel acquiring – 1 channel fetching” example).
Fetch operation is inside the loop, while all the configuration ones are outside, so if I want to change a configuration parameter, I have to exit from the f
etching loop, stop the acquisition (with “niscope abort.vi”), set the new parameters and finally restart the acquisition, with a necessary loss of data.
I thought a second way: “2 channel acquiring – 1 channel fetching”.
If I have well understood, I could acquire the same signal from both the channels, configured with different vertical settings (es. +/-1V and +/-2.5V respectively), so I could fetch data from the better vertical range channel only.
In this mode I perform an effective vertical setting (but in 2 steps only) during the continuous acquisition without data loss.
First question:
Is it right? Is the last example (2 ch. Acq. – 1 ch. Fetch) more expensive with respect to the first (1 ch. Acq. – 1 ch. Fetch) in terms of PC and/or OS resources?
I have inserted the PCI-5112 board in a Pentium III, 128 Mb RAM, with Windows ME OS.
Second question:
Sometimes, during the fetching operation, the board stops the acquisition (I see
noise only), and it’s necessary to make the shutdown of PC, before to see the signal again!
Is it necessary a reset (with "niscope Reset.vi")? Is a Windows ME bug? Is a board failure?
Thank you in advance.

• IPhone 4S time and date keeps resetting, despite being set to automatically do so.

After having recently upgraded my iOS to 7.0.4, my Verizon iPhone 4S has started to re-set the time and date every now and then at random. It does this, despite me having my Settings set to automatically set the date and time based on my location. I have called Verizon about this and all they had me do was to reset my network connections and reset my roaming capabilities...and despite me doing that this morning, the time re-set itself again this afternoon. I have found the only solution has been for me to power off my phone completely and then once on again, set the phone either into Airplane mode for a second - or to just wait until the Verizon signal switches the phone back to being the correct time and date on its own. I have also found that these issues have started to affect my ability to send and receive iMessages, as well. For some reason, when the date/time re-sets, the iMessage option becomes un-selected and I have to manually go back and turn that functionality back on. Anyone else having these same issues? It's incredibly frustrating and I'm not sure what else I can do save for constantly hard, re-starting my iPhone everytime I notice the time and date is out of whack. Also it's hard for me to tell if this is an Apple hardware issue/bug that just needs to be fixed - or something to do with Verizon. Any tips/info would be appreciated.

Try setting your time to manual. This way, the iPhone is the one controlling the time. As you correctly understand, when it is on auto, it is controlled by Verizon and their individual towers. If after setting the time to manual it works, then I would say it isn't a phone issue, but a Verizon one. Do you frequent the same area when this occurs? It could very well be an issue with a particular tower in your area and Verizon would need to check that. If the time goes off again while on manual, then it could be the phone. User troubleshooting is restart, reset, restore from backup and restore as new. Try each in order until the problem is fixed. If it cannot be, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar at Apple to have the phone looked at for hardware issues.

• How do you make Mozilla listen to users and stop FFFFirefox Auto Updating despite being set to NOT auto update?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/999831?esab=a&s=&r=0&as=s
I set Firefox to stop auto updating,
Then the other day I installed a new user on my laptop, when they loaded Firefox it auto updated MY version of Firefox.
Has NOTHING been learnt?
STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID
So I have 2 questions
How do you make Mozilla listen to users?
and how do prevent what happened to me happening again?

SuperSluether
Not a millionth, you have only provided 150 answers and I doubt they were all this issue.
If you don't like it, don't use it.
If a business took this attitude they would soon be out of business
Updates help KEEP YOU SAFE
Sometimes, but in my experience FFirefox updates can really screw up your system, lose you data, mess up your user interface. I have run IT for one of the biggest intranets on the planet and we never allowed even Mictosoft updates until we did User Acceptance Testing and understood the impact of the upgrade. I am a grown up not a child, I have system where I test updates for performance, security and impact, I WILL DECIDE when I want to install it. If Mozilla wants to provide real security updates I would take them but if you look at the link in my OP you will see it said an update was security and it completely messed up.
Updates add tons of great new features
Actually with FFirefox in my experience they take more away than they add, things I did not ask them to take, they do not look at my config and leave my settings as they were and then tell me about new options, no they completely screw my productivity as it takes days to figure out how to undo the kwap they have added. Copying the AWFUL Chrome interface is not an improvement, Google has one of the worst UI's on the planet accross all their products.
Firefox is designed to be customized PER USER, NOT CROSS-SYSTEM
There are some things that benefit from being per user and some that are per machine, windows has group policies per machine and per user. My OP is telling Mozilla that this is another area where they have "designed" badly, I tell them this so that they improve it and in the vain hope that there is some config setting that will stop this nonsense.
So SuperSluether you have not really helped, all you seem to say is FO if you do not like it. Good job you do not run a business. With that attitude probably best you do not contribute.

• Despite being set to 'enabled', Z68Intel SpeedStep not working with overclock.

Here is a screenshot of my modest 24/7 overclock on my Z68A GD80 (G3) mobo:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/87/cpuzcpu.png/
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/580/cpuzrams.png/
Problem is, that the screenshot was taken when system was idling, yet the mobo has not recognised that my system is idling and therefore I am merely wasting energy by sitting with my CPU at 4.6Ghz. I o/cd my previous CPU (which I have had for 4 years) by more than 30% of its default clock yet the mobo still recognised when the 4Ghz was not required and underclocked it to 2.6Ghz (by reducing multiplier).
I am hoping that there is some setting that I have overlooked (which has been the case a few times already for problems I have had with this mobo), but I can state, that in the bios setting, 'Speed Step' is set to enabled.

With Sandy Bridge things changed slightly.
Manually change your base multi and /or your VCore and they will stay there.
This is being moved to the OC section.
The trick is to leave your "Adjust CPU Ratio" at 33 or 34 depending on the CPU used. Then open up your last item in the OC section (CPU Features), and then adjust the 1/2/3/4-Core Ratio Limit.
Most of these boards will clock in Auto to at least X43-X45 when all is left on Auto. Just disable EuP2013 and Spread Spectrum.
Thanks for the tip! I tried using the method of leaving everything on auto, and adjusting the CPU core ratios in the section of the bios you mention above. However, since my PC couldn't even post using this method with x42 (4200MHz intended oc) set across all four chips, let alone 43-45. I would have taken a slighlty lower overclock than my 4.6 Ghz in exchange for the power saving functionality but not if it meant losing 500-600 Mhz (and possibly even more) of CPU horsepower.
But this is a pretty bloody annoying change on Intel's part....
......overclock and lose the built in power saving feature!?
I mean ?

• Firefox 15.1 storing Downloads in Temp folder despite being set to save into Downloads?

OK so I'm running Windows 7 64 Bit and Mozilla Firefox 15.1
Downloads is set to save to "Downloads" but, they are in fact saving to a firefox temp folder?

I read an answer on here that said "Disable Real Time AV Scanning??? are you serious? all those hackers out there and you want me to turn off my AV?
Please can you provide a suitable answer to this query.

If the anti-virus software is scanning the file while it is still in the temp folder and keeps an handle on it then Firefox won't be able to move the file from the temp folder to the destination folder.
Your AV software should still scan the file if you try to start it or open the file in another application if real-time scanning is disabled.
You can also try to exclude the temp folder, so the scanning will be done once Firefox moves the file to the destination folder and not during the download phase.

• Changing from continuous to finite sampling

Hi All,
I'm programming the 6602 with DAQmx 7.4 Ansi C API. This is pretty small issue, but since it might be a bug I thought I'd post it anyway. When I run a counter input task with implicit timing (say period or frequency measurement) in continuous sampling mode everything works fine - the task can be restarted after it has been stopped without any problems. The same goes for finite sampling mode. However, if I run the task in continuous mode, stop it, switch to finite mode and run it again, then it never seems to finish. More specifically, even after all the samples have been read, neither DAQmxIsTaskDone() nor DAQmxGetTaskComplete() indicates that the task is completed. Also, the done event callback function is not executed. Consequently, my thread for reading the data and saving it to file never completes even though all the data is read from the buffer. Anyone know what is going on here? As a workaround, maybe I could monitor the amount of data read from the buffer and stop the task explicitly once the requested number of samples have been collected, but I'd rather have it complete naturally......
Jeff

Hi Axiom-
I have been able to replicate the same behavior you're seeing using NI-DAQmx 7.5, the most recent released version. It seems that this may be an issue and I will file a corrective action request for the issue.
For the timebeing, your suggestion to monitor the number of samples read and programmatically stop the task seems like a solid workaround. Please post back if you have any additional questions.
Thanks for keeping us on our toes!

• Need help to choose a DAQ for simultaneous sampling

We need to choose a DAQ for simultaneous sampling. The restrictions are:
a) 2 channels
b) The signals on both channels are not continuous. A valid input on the channels is signaled by a falling edge in a third line that can be used as a trigger.
c) The rate of these signals can be up to 50000 per second but they do not arrive in a periodic way.
d) The timing:
The trigger is a pulse of 600 ns
The signals on the channels are stable 200ns before the leading edge of the trigger pulse and remain stable for 900ns.
We have seen the PCI-6143 but we are not sure if it is the best choice.
We have some questions:
1) Does the 6143 fulfill the timing requirements ?
2) Is it posible and easy to set the board to take one sample after the trigger ?
3) Is there a better choice than the 6143 to solve the problem ?
4) Can we solve this problem programming in VB or VC++ and using the software that comes with the board or do we need to buy extra libraries ?

1) Does the 6143 fulfill the timing requirements ?
Yes, the 6143 should fulfill these requirements. It has a 250 KS/s sampling rate per channel which should give you 5x oversampling at the 50 kHz maximum bandwidth you indicated. The minimum delay from the recognition of the trigger to the first sample on this board is 100 ns which falls within the 900 ns window.
2) Is it posible and easy to set the board to take one sample after the trigger ?
It's not clear to me whether you want to take a single sample after a trigger and stop or use the trigger as an external sample clock to acquire several samples at the rate of the trigger. In either case, it's possible and relatively easy to do so. The only quirk is that the minimum number of samples to acquire for a hardware timed acquisition is two samples. This means if you really only want one point after the trigger, you'll have to setup the hardware to acquire two samples and then throw the second one away in software.
3) Is there a better choice than the 6143 to solve the problem ?
This seems like a pretty solid choice for the application you described. However, you didn't mention what the amplitude of your input signals are. The 6143 has a fixed +/- 5 volt range. If this isn't sufficient, you'll have to provide signal conditioning or choose a board with a wider input range. Also, I'm assuming your trigger signal is a TTL signal. If it's an analog signal, you'll want to choose a board with an analog trigger circuit (the 6143 doesn't have an analog trigger). The PCI-6111 is a 2 channel board with a +/- 42 volt input range, an analog trigger, a 5 MS/s sampling rate, and will also meet all of your requirements. The only down side of the 6111 is that it is more expensive and is a 12 bit converter instead of 16 bit. The PCI-6120 has even more functionality than the 6111 and has a 16 bit converter at 800 KS/s. PXI has some more simultaneous offerings, but I'm assuming you want to stick with PCI. You can also check out some of our modular instrument offerings such as the PCI-5102. I'm not as familiar with the modular instruments, so you'll have to check out the specs for yourself. Whether there is a better choice or not is pretty subjective. That will depend on how much you're willing to spend for the features and specs you really care about. From the information you provided, the 6143 will be the lowest cost solution that meets the requirements you specified.
4) Can we solve this problem programming in VB or VC++ and using the software that comes with the board or do we need to buy extra libraries ?
The DAQmx driver provides interfaces to both of these programming environments at no extra cost.

• PCI-6023E DAQ card maximum sampling frequency

Hello
I am using PCI-6023E DAQ card in pc-based ETS solution (and writing appilication in LabView 7.1 with RT module). The card has 200kS/s maximum sampling frequency, but it can be set for much higher sampling frequencies and the waveform acquired appears to be correct (i.e. i've tried setting it fo 1MS/s and sampling 400kHz sine, which is obviously above Nyquist frequency for 200kS/s card, but on spectral graph, main peak is at 400kHz). Is the card driver doing some kind of free/coherent sampling?
Moreover, when sampling frequency is set to 200kS/s, the card seems to be doing same thing - i.e. for 200kS/s and sample block size of 200kS, graph should be updated once in a second, but it's updating slighty slower.
I'd really appreciate if someone could explain me (or gave me a link to materials) what exactly is happening here? Is driver doing some background work, or maybe it is problem with network latency/unstability ? What is the impact of this effect on real-time aquisition?
Thanks in advance
Jan Kienig

Since the fundemental is 4 times the nyquist, then what you are measuring is an alias of the fundemental. This works well as long as the fundemental is a repetitive signal. Sampling every other peak and every other node looks the same as sampling every peak and node. Tektronix exploited this on their 7S series sampling heads. Another use of this phenomena is the effective demodulation of high frequency signals as long as the bandwidth meets nyquist. As with your card, if the input amplifier supported it, I could extract modulation information from a 500 MHz signal so long as the the bandwith of that modulation did not exceed 100 kHz.

Are you sure the settings are correct? Did you check the outgoing mail server setting? Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

• Fonts are activated despite being off in Font Book

I opened a Word doc in MS Word 2008 and, all of a sudden, started asking me in a dialog box:
"Microsoft Word want to use the font... "bla bla" ... that was downloaded from the internet. Allow Microsoft Word to use this font?
And then buttons to either "Show in Finder" "Don't Allow" and "Allow"
Some I allowed and some I didn't allow.
This was a document I had previously opened in Word with no problem. These are fonts that were definitely not in the Word doc.
Now, in Word and other applications like InDesign, I have all my fonts activated despite being off or deactivated in Font Book.
That's nearly 100 or so fonts open that I don't need so this is slowing me down.
I've restarted - no luck.
Any ideas?

First try manually removing the Office font cache files. Close all Office applications. Remove the following files. The tilde (~) indicates your home account.
~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
For Office 2008, the location of the second item is:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Office Font Cache (12)
If that doesn't do it, read on.
Being unable to open or close fonts from within Font Book's interface is almost always a sign its database is damaged. The only fix is to clear it and start over.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally.
This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode. Any font sets you have created will be gone. Also, all fonts in the three main Fonts folders (System, Library, your user account) will now be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
Next, you need to clear all font cache files from the system.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
