Dashed line "Dash" & "Gap" options

Hey all, looking for a CS3 tip here.
I use a lot of dashed strokes, and I've found that when I enter values in the Dash and Gap boxes, I later can't delete the values entirely. I can delete whatever I entered, but Illustrator won't leave the box blank - it now fills the box with 0 point.
For example, I create a path, turn on Dashed Line, then enter 2 point Dash, 1 point Gap, and accidentally Tab to the third box. Once the focus has been put on that third box, it won't remain blank, the best I can have is 0 point. So now continuing the example, my stroke is 2 point dash, 1 point gap, 0 point dash (slightly visible on screen, invisible in print), 1 point gap, and repeat. The net effect is that it looks like a 2 point dash followed by a 2 point gap.
Any way to reset the box to contain NO information? It's bugging me because once I've created one of these "bad" dashed strokes, I either have to fudge my values to make it look right, or quit illustrator and start over because the bad values are persistent any time I turn on the dashed line checkbox until Illustrator is quit.

I'm deleting everything in the box, and just to be sure, I've tried clicking in the box and hitting command-a to select all, then hitting delete. But whether I do it that way or drop the cursor in at the end tap delete repeatedly, it still auto-fills "0 pt" when I leave the box.
As to the second point, I always try emptying the boxes from right back to the left. I get the effect you describe if I empty the first box - they all reset to blank and the "dashed line" checkbox changes to unchecked. But the moment I try to put a dashed line on a path again, it refills with the previous setting, including the 0 pt entries on the right most boxes that I would hope to stay blank.
I take it your installation doesn't replicate the behavior I'm experiencing? I will be upgrading to Leopard just as soon as I have a slump - I can just wait to see if a clean installation of Illustrator takes care of it.
Thanks.

  • Dashed Line - Dashes Move?

I'm trying to make a dashed line move, sort of like what you see in photoshop when you outline something. Basically I want the dashes to move along a path.
Usually I can come up with these solutions pretty quickly, but I'm not able to on this one. Maybe I'm not as versed in the "shape" behaviors as I should be.
Originally I thought I could just ramp the offset of the dashes, but that's not an option. I'm hoping I don't have to make a movie of a dash moving left to right, and use that as the source of my pen. That seems a little intensive, but may work.
Anyone have a quick idea on how this should be done?

    Adam:
That's helpful, but I'm trying to get the dashes to actually move (all of them) along the path, like in a loop. Like marching ants on a path. As one disappears on the end, another will come on at the start. You know?
The replicator is a good idea, but I can't get the sequence behavior to follow the path. It only allows the position to be an xyz point.
Using Motion Path wont allow me to align the angle.
I feel like I should use the shape behaviors, but that won't allow me to move anything along the path, much like the limitation with the replicator.
I keep feeling like there should be an offset that I can move, but there isn't.
I'm seriously thinking I need to animate one dash moving left to right and make that the source of the brush. Right?

  • How do I remove the 2 dashed lines (dashes) from above my html signature (from file) appearing in new mail I write?

I have saved an HTML signature to file (as per Mozilla instruction).
When I write new mail the signature is present but it is preceded by 2 dashes.
I have no idea why and would like to have them removed please.

You are refering to the signature delimiter.
    '''what does the delimiter do?'''
    http://www.ehow.com/info_12071771_email-signature-delimiter.html
If the signature is placed directly after the reply and on top of the quote, it lacks the "-- " signature separator. That separator is used by Thunderbird to strip off the old signature when replying or changing identities. The signature becomes part of the message and can no longer be automatically removed (since it can't be identified using the seperator), causing a stacked signature
''' To switch it off for all identities of your accounts:'''
    Tools > Options > Advanced> General tab
    or
menu icon > Options > Options > Advanced> General tab
    * click on 'Config editor' button
it will tell you to be careful :)
    * in top search type: separator
    * look for this line: mail.identity.default.suppress_signature_separator; false
    * Double click to toggle 'false' to 'true' or right click on line and select 'Toggle'
    * Close config editor - top right X
    * click on OK to save changes in Options.

  • Dashed Line option

Does the Dashed Line Option only work when using only the Line Tool ?

No. You can apply a dashed stroke to any path drawn with any drawing tool.

  • Disappeared dashed lines options

very often when I want to adjust the spacing for the dashed lines in Indesign cs6, the options disappear in the stroke flyout panel.
Strangely, it remains disappeared for the specified file forever. The workaround that I do for this is that I open a new file, make the dashed lines as desired, (yeah, the options come in a new file), then copy paste it. What exactly is causing this weird behaviour?

I'm always beware of new versions, often they are heavier and take longer time to process, e.g. photoshop cs6 i found slower than cs5
You haven't select the Dashed Line at the bottom of the Type options.
You have 2 different stroke weights selected, that's why weight shows as nothing.
Bold part: That's just not true for everyone, in fact I find each version of all the Adobe suites to run perfectly fine - there may be something you need to change on your system to get the programs to work better. But I never notice any difference from version to version regarding longer times to process.

  • Dashed lines in illustrator cs5

    Hi,
Is it possible to make lines dashed and dotted like you can in indesign cs5 where it is so simple?
    i can't figure it out.
    thanks

Yes and if you read about strokes and the appearance panels and experiment with adding strokes and different settings for creating dash lines you can accomplish a lot.
Look at the Stroke Panel a little more carefully and you will see the option to create dash lines.
The help probably has changed for CS5 since there is an additiona option for CS5 as to the way the dash lines are spaced
in relationship to the corners and paths the other keeps the exact measurements of the dash and gaps not considering the ends or corners

  • Dashed lines

    Hi folks,
I'm trying to increase the length of the individual dash
strokes (i.e. shorten the gaps between the dashes). Does anyone
know how to do this; alternatively, is there a way I can make a
    custom dashed line?
    cheers

To create a new dashed stroke style:
    1. In the Object panel, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option
(Macintosh) as you select a dash from the dash style pop-up menu.
    2. To set dash sizes, enter values in any of the On text
boxes in the Dash Editor. To set the space sizes between dashes,
enter values in any of the Off text boxes.
    3. Click OK to add a new dash to the dash style pop-up menu
and apply the new dash to any selected paths.
Note: The dash style pop-up menu can display up to 255 dashed
strokes. You cannot remove styles from the menu.
Reading the manual or Help File is sometimes a good idea. The
text above is copied from the latter.

  • Dashed line between pages

Is it possible to avoid the dashed line between pages when "Show Gaps Between Pages" is unchecked? In other words is it possible to have the 2 pages join seamlessly, no gaps, no dashed lines?
    Thanx,
    Guido

"I would like to export the document to PDF using the spreads option, so that the spreads are combined into 1 page.
However, is there a way for the PDF to recognise the page numbers originally specified in InDesign?"
When you combine pages in a spread you make one page in Acrobat. I can't see how you would expect Acrobat to see this as
    two pages.

  • Dashed line in Health app?

    Hi,
I tracked a run today using Endomondo that posted the calories burned into Health in iOS8. However, the chart is sowing a dashed line as opposed to a solid line as it has done in the past
Does anyone know what this means? The calories have been shared with all the other connected apps, so I'm not too concerned, I'm just curious!
    Many thanks,

The dashed line corresponds to gaps in the data, spanning points in time where you did not log any activity.  For example, I cycled on Oct. 16 & 17, so the Week view shows a solid line between those adjacent days for which there was recorded activity.  I did not cycle again until Oct. 20, so there is a data point showing that day's activity on the 20th and a dashed line connecting to the previous data point (on the 17th).
This is actually to prevent confusion about the meaning of the lines spanning the points.  The dashed line makes it easier to see that I did not cycle in those intermediate days, while still allowing me to see at-a-glance that my activity on the 20th was less strenuous (since the line slopes downward) than that previous point back on the 17th.

  • Showing grid lines as dashed lines

    Dear All,
i am using a waveform chart to plot my data .. i want to insert grid inside my chart .
There are 3 different options for inserting grids in d chart .
is dere any way i can change the style of lines of grids ?? i want to see them as dashed lines rather than a continous line ...
    Thanks
    Ritesh

    Hi,
the solution to it was a bit complicated .. i had to search for examples to get my data on the wavefrom graph...
thing is like dis. i have to store the data of different channels on different clusters and join the clustes using Build Array ...
Now dat i am able to show the data on graph(atleast) its not showing it continously .. the graph is plotting all d data at the starting point, i.e 0 and not moving forward ..
I am posting the Block Diagram as well as the Output that i am getting ..
Regarding Block Diargram - I am reading a text file containing the waveform data.. it has N number of rows.. each row has 4 columns containing data of 4 different channels .
i read the file "line by line" and store the data in 4 diff arrays(b,c,d,e). then i cluster these 4 arrays separately and build array using dese 4 clusters .. and d output of the array is plotted on the graph den..
Pl. have a look at it and see if dere's any solution to it ..
    Thanks

  • Can Flash create dashed line with blunt not rounded dashes ?

    Hi,
    using Flash8
I can select line tool and dashed line in properties and draw a dashed line and get a line of sausages. How do I get a line of dashes without rounded ends to each dash ?
Line option has end caps option with None (gives straight or blunt tip to line, round gives rounded tip .
Draw a line with None and its got blunt ends, select it and choose dashed line option and it gets round ends to the dashes, the end cap option is greyed out !
Are dashed lines with blunt dashes now possible again with CS4, a forum poster also found that CS3 no longer gave blunt dashes ?
    Why do I ask:-
I am trying to bring a map into Flash8 from Illustrator (Illus version 10 as it allows blunt tip lines to remain blunt it was said on the forum)... which has blunt ends to roads and has blunt type dashed lines. The roads remain blunt..GOOD !..but the dashed lines become what looks like a solid line. BAD !
I do a right click - break apart,  then double click one of those now solid lines that should be dashed, and I am able to select a portion of the line, it is no longer a continual line as drawn in Illustrator. Properties shows it as solid line. Flash8 obviously having a problem with supporting Illustrator 10 dashed line then !
Select dashed in properties box and I get a portion of the line as sausage dashes, but working my way along the line doing each bit sees a far from correct dashed line result as sausages dont start stop evenly as each line is a separate entity and ignores the previous line.
Looks like I shall have to try and draw the line as one long line again in flash but unless I can give it blunt dashes when done, there is no point even trying that method, hence my question.
Would the latest Illustrator and Flash versions (CS4) allow blunt type dashed lines to appear in Flash ?
This is crucial for bringing maps into Flash.
    Envirographics

I noticed one problem with my solution.
If you look, very carefully, at the end of the stream, it's flat. Not rounded like it should be. After a bit of trial and error, I tried a different brush:
Note that, in addition to the rounded rectangle (done with the new corner controls in the latest version of Illustrator CC that just came out) and the three circles, there is also a rectangle, with no stroke and no fill, to provide a space at the end of the three dots. Here is the result:

  • Can I change the dashed line between pages in 2up Display mode?

Did anyone ever figure out an answer to this query: Remove dashed page lines in two up mode?
Or did it get fixed or modifiable in a later version?
I'm viewing a pdf in two-up mode and I hate the dashed line Acrobat uses to indicate the gutter line between pages.
I don't want to export as spreads from the indd doc because it ruins pagination.
I wouldn't mind changing it to a solid hairline. the dashes are really distracting.
I don't like Showing Gaps between pages either.
Anyone have a way to modify that dividing line in regular two-up mode?
    Thanks.

Is there a way to change this?
    No.

  • Dashed line / dotted line coupon effect? FCPX

Seeing if anyone has any tips or tricks on how to create a dashed line type of effect around an object in a video, making it look like a coupon or like it was cut out of paper?
The line doesn't necessarily progress around the object in the video -- it can be a static layer. Though, if anyone DOES have tips on animating the lines, that could be cool, too!
    Thanks in advance.

    Familiar with Motion?
Draw a short horizontal line. Select the Anchor point tool and drag the center to the right end of the line you drew. Replicate the line. Change the Arrangement to Outline.  In the Cell Controls section, check the Align Angle option.
You will now have a dashed outline rectangle. You can publish the Size parameter and change the size of the rectangle with the Width and Height parameters from Size. You can increase the number of line segments with the Points parameter and you can animate the outline with the Offset parameter (but there's a catch.)
When animating the offset, you will have line segments extend "outside" the base rectangle shape briefly (since they are aligned to the side they are attached to, then snap to another side when the anchor point changes over from one side to the next.)
To get around that, you need to create another rectangle that is 100 by 100 and link the Scale X and Scale Y parameters (separately) to the Width and Height of the Replicator (in the Link behavior, set the Scale to 10 for both.) Drag the rectangle onto the Replicator in the Layers List and hold until you get the popup menu -- select Add Mask to Object. [PS -- you should center the Replicator AND the rectangle before adding the rectangle as a mask!] [You can create a square rectangle then select the Shape > Geometry tab and type in the exact points: (-50, 50); (50, 50); (50, -50); (-50, -50) to create the exact size you need.]
If the mask is perfectly aligned, you can now animate the dashed line and it won't look weird. You can change the width and height of the replicator and the mask will change in perfect synchronization.
You can also make the dashes longer or shorter by manipulating the Scale X parameter in the Cell Controls of the Replicator. If you made the original line white, you can colorize from the Cell Controls as well.
After that, you'll need to figure out if you want a solid color background; a drop zone or effect source/title background; what kind of text you want inside the dashed outline (or you can manually place a Basic Title in FCPX if you like); etc...
Hope this helps...  If  you need further help with this, let me know.

  • Mathematical formula for even dashed lines?

Is there a mathmatical formula for getting evenly distributed dashed lines in Illustrator? Something involving Pi, I assume.
I usually get double dashes next to each other or unevenly distributed dashes.
For example, I have a stroked circle with a width/diameter of 100 pixels. If I want 4 dashes with a dash of 0.5, I would need a gap of ???. If I wanted 64 dashes with 1 pixel dash, I'd need a gap of ???.

    Navarro,
The perimeter, or path length, equals PI * diameter (3.141593 * W).
A Blend with one step less than the number of dashes applied to a circle with a cut where you wish to start/stop may be your friend, as may a rotation, by 360 degrees divided by the dash number, of the first dash along with a large enough concentric circle (this may be done as an Effect and possibly expanded).

  • Dashed Line Problem in CS

I am using Illustrator CS and I draw a lot of origami diagrams.
I have set up a little library of Graphic Styles for the various lines I need to use.
I would like to be able to start and end a line of whatever length and angle on a dash.
    see link below;
    http://www.itsjustabitofpaper.com/Dotted%20Line%20Problem.htm
Step 1 is what is actually happening and Step 2 is what I want (Step 2 only works because I stretched the background rectangle to fit.)
Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
    Rikki

Yes, that would be useful when you have a dashed line joining itself to form an enclosed area and keeping all the dashes and gaps evenly spaced. But in Rikki's case having only a straight line across a specific distance, my method would be more expedient, time wise that is.
