Data Merge error InDesign CC 2014

Hi Folks!
Eager to use new InDesign CC 2014, I was trying to develop a simple set of Certificates for a costumer, as I always did in older versions of InDesign. 50 sheets or so (each sheet just change the name and the category os certificate). Everything was fine, but when I output the merged file, InDesign just COLLAPSED! Many times occured the same. Fortunately I could do it in InDesign CC, that worked fine.
Can anybody tell me if occurred same issue in new InDesign CC 2014?
Thanks a lot!

  • Data Merge Errors in InDesign CS5 - need help please!

Trouble with Data Merge in InDesign CS5: We have a word doc that was created, then each appropriate section was cut and pasted into an excel file. When the Excel file is saved as a csv file and imported, the file unexpectedly stops, not completing its flow into the appropriate data fields. We are thinking that it is because of some unknown "special/hidden" characters within the original Word file. Is this a correct assumption, and if so is there a way to show those characters in order to eliminate them? (we did not create the word doc originally)
Or, is there another way that we can accomplish what we are trying to accomplish, which is to flow text from a database into an InDesign template?

I'd start by opening the .csv file in a plain text editor and taking a good look at it to make sure each record has the same number of fields (commas) and there are no obvious special character problems. Then resave from there as plain text with the .csv extension.

  • QR code date merge error.

When trying to create a qr code data merge in indesign, I cannot seem to create actual QR codes.
Instead they are previewing as text.
How can I create a QR data merge code with QR codes?

No real tuts that I am aware of. Here is a link to a sample set of files.
In the ZIP is an ID file, the merge text (tab delimited),4 images for the merge (hey, it's Disney character themed), and most importantly, an Excel file. In the Excel file, the last column is a calculated field that pulls together info from the other fields and adds the strings (text) that is needed.
I no longer have access to ID 2014. I used the trial version to help someone else do this and to prepare this sample. I suspect I can answer your questions without being able to actually see the ID file should you have any.
    Take care, Mike

  • How do I generate a data merge in InDesign from an excel spreadsheet which includes a barcode

Can you please advise if the following process is possible within InDesign CS 5.5? (Mac OS 10.8.2).
We need to create a data merge that includes a barcode. The data merge is for several thousand records.
We have a customer-supplied Excel spreadsheet that contains seven fields, one of which is a number that ultimately needs to print as a barcode when we make the data merge in InDesign.
As you would expect, the conventional six fields data merge perfectly - but we can't find a way to make the barcode print correctly within the data merge.
We have investigated several possible solutions without success.
Some solutions suggest a plug-in for Excel to convert the number into a barcode whilst still in the spreadsheet - but this doesn't come across correctly when we import the CSV file into the InDesign data merge.
We have investigated certain third party software applications but none provide the full solution we require. Some, for example, appear to create the barcode within the Excel spreadsheet but don't produce the barcode correctly when we data merge in InDesign; and some will allow us to create a one-off barcode within InDesign but have no automated way of retrieving the thousands of Excel numbers and turning them into barcodes.
We have also come across possible 'font' solutions but have had no success with these either.
For a previous job we needed to produce we outsourced to a specialist mailing company, who assured us they produced the whole job (very quickly) within InDesign. They, understandably, won't tell us how they did it. But, given the speed with which they produced the job for us, we imagine - with the correct software - the whole process is easy to do.
    Can you please advise?

    HI MIKE
Thanks again for your reply and your help with this.
I've downloaded the barcode font from the link you supplied.
I've tried three tests - and seem much closer to getting what we need. But I've come up against a couple of issues.
TEST 1 - almost just to see if the downloaded font worked, I simply data merged our source csv file and applied the downloaded barcode font to the serial number in ID. Probably unsurprisingly, this produced a perfectly printed barcode - that wouldn't scan.
TEST 2 - I manually added asterisks before and after the serial number in the first couple of fields and then tried the same process as TEST 1. It produced a perfectly printed barcode which this time DID scan correctly - but obviously the barcode had asterisks on it which I don't want. I just want the serial number. And with thousands of serial numbers we need the addition of the asterisks to happen automatically (which is where your text editor process seems the perfect solution, if we could get that to work).
TEST 3 - Noting your comments about using parenthesis around the serial number, I followed your example of (123456). But Excel won't let me type a parenthesis. It lets me type the parenthesis but then instantly substitutes it with a - (hyphen) before the number in the actual serial number cell and no character at all after the number.
If you have any suggestions or solutions for any of the above they'd be gratefully received! Thanks again for all your help with this.
    Kind regards
    Rob

  • Data Merging in InDesign 5.5

    Hello,
I would like to use data merge in InDesign but unfortunately it seems to be missing some essential functions. One function I would like to be able use is creating single PDFs naming them using a column that is in the CSV file.
Does anyone know of a plug-in (free or not) that extends the ability of data merge in InDesign? We are on Windows 7.
    Thanks,
    Graham

Not offhand, but it's a pretty straightforward script.
Merge the filenames into a field on the pasteboard and then have a script that iterates over the pages of your document, reads the filename out of the textframe on the pasteboard, and exports the page to the filename.
It's like 4 lines of code...Search around and ask in the scripting forum if you can't find one or manage it yourself. I'm 25% sure I've written one of these for someone...

  • Quick contract gig: Data Merge with inDesign

My client has a small college directory created with inDesign, and a spreadsheet of contact info / headshots. They would like to perform a data merge so they can ready the directory for print.
Please contact me if this is within your wheelhouse!

You can make three separate ID files and then combine them into a book. The book file is merely a super set of the individual ID files.

  • Data Merge with Indesign

I am trying to create a large catalog.  I have 3 very different product types that require different info, and therefore I think, completely different templates.  I was thinking that I will need to create three separate data merge templates/ merges, but then I would like to combine them all into one indesign book.  Is there an easy way to do this without copying and pasting all of the products from each into one main book?
    Thanks!

  • Data Merge error message

I keep receiving this message when selecting Data Source in InDesign: "The data source cannot be opened. Confirm that the file exists and that you have rights to open it, then choose the Select Data Source command again." I saved my excel file as a .csv file. What else needs to be done or isn't being done right?

Below is a sample of what I am trying to merge into InDesign. Do the fields look right to you? Or are the comma and dollar signs a problem when it comes to merging?

  • Data Merge with InDesign doc that's 4up

I've just experimented with an InDesign document that we want to print 4 up (postcard) and we'd like our addresses to merge and print in the mailing area. When I've tried it, however, it's putting the same address on each of the four cards. Any way around this? The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to split my excel address list into four equal groups, name them each a different name (addresses 1, addresses 2, etc) and then add the merge information for each doc on each on of the cards.
    Doable? or no?
    Susan

Unfortunately, the designer before me (I work at a print shop) lost the manual. I've searched the web. I've followed the instructions in InDesign help and also Excel help. I've tried numerous times to do this, changing different parameters hoping that it will succeed. As for putting only one placeholder on the page, it's not cost effective in printing to print a postcard one up on a digital printer. Tons of wasted space. FYI... data merge may be new to me, but no need to be flip about your response. I've been a designer for over 27 years, certainly no newbie.

  • Korean in InDesign data merge error

    name,adress,no
    aaa,"""서울""",1
    """나나나""",bbb,2
    """다다다""","""부천""",3

Likely it is the encoding of the merge file that is the problem.
I don't know if you needed the quote marks or not, so I stripped them. From Excel, I exported as a Unicode TXT file, which will automatically export as UTF-16 and is tab delimited. The result is shown below once merged.
Edit to add, make sure you are using an appropriate fonts, too

  • InDesign CC data merge is slow and crashes

Is there a way to create a data merge in Indesign for a large number of records, and not have it freeze?  I am on PC, using a new computer. I tried reducing the data source to just 6 columns and 5 rows as a test, but it still got hung up. I tried unchecking create overset, and I also tried creating merge to pdf, and .indd. So far any merge I have tried/tested has been unsucessful.
the client wants serial numbers on a small sticker like product to place on their inventory.
4000 serial numbers, 6 times each, and I set up a file with 300 per sheet
Is this possible, or will another program handle this?  OR Is there a script, OR am I doomed to to input the serial numbers myself, with the copy/paste and find/replace as my new best friend?
The numbers are not in numerical order, a typical number is WFC100652.

I was having the same problem while trying to do a merge of 7,000 records.  The computer would run slow and the program would crash after a hour of so. I then did the 500 records at a time, but that was taking to long and its ridiculous to have to do that in the first place.  I checked my data file as suggested on the message boards and it was fine, with no errors found.  I tried a workaround and to my amazement, it worked fine.  I realized that the program didn't crash when I did a preview of the intended merge.  What I did was, on the DATA MERGE tab, I did a PREVIEW of my merged data.  I checked through the "merged" documents and they looked fine.  I was even able to change a mistake that I found.  I then choose EXPORT TO PDF from the pull down menu (instead of CREATE MERGED DOCUMENT) and it created my PDF of 7,000 merged documents fine in less than 2 minutes.  I was then able to open up the PDF and print it out without any problems.  Since then, i've done jobs of 8, 9 and 12,000 records without any problems using the PREVIEW method.

  • How to create multiple editable PDFs from data merged Indesign file

    Hi
This is quite complicated but I'm hoping someone can help me and hoping I can explain it too!
I am working on a project for a client. She wants to send 150 people a 6 page PDF with fields to complete and return to her.
She has an Excel spreadsheet with some of the fields completed already so these will be Data Merged into InDesign CS6.
The short version of the question goes like this:
Can you automate the process so that once all the data is in the InDesign file, it can then create a PDF every 6 pages all in one go?
For those still interested, the long version of the question goes like this:
I have created 3 pages in InDesign with fields to complete and used the 'Data Merge' facility to add the Excel info.
I have created 3 more pages with blank fields to fill in.
Then I have made all fields editable using the 'Buttons and Forms' facility in the Interactive menu.
Then I have created an interactive PDF. Then I have opened that PDF in Adobe Acrobat X Pro and saved it as 'Reader Extended PDF' and 'Enable Additional Features'
I now have an Editable PDF with half the fields filled in and half blank to be filled in and this can be saved and returned.
Now, this would be great if it was only one or two. But I need to create 150 different versions and this is just for the Pilot study. If all goes well, this will go to 5,000 people and I can't be creating 5,000 seperate PDFS!!
At this stage, I am just focussing on the 150. So again, going back to the original question, is there a script that could be written either to break up the 1st PDF every 6 pages into 150 different PDFS? Is there even a way of extending that script to Save as Reader Extended etc? Is there a simple idea that I'm missing? Are there any ways to do this? I can use 'Created Merged Documents' to make 150 x 6 pages in Indesign so can anything be done from there?
    Any advice greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    G

    Hi Akash,
    1) Pass the three header data in header table. 2) Pass all the item data in item table. here explain where you struck.

  • InDesign-Data Merge, Consecutive Empty Fields

    Hi there,
I've been doing data merges in InDesign for quite some time now and I've always had this problem. I don't know of any other way, besides to go in and manually delete every line, to get rid of this issue.
    Here's my data block:
    <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>
    <<Spouse First>> <<Spouse Last>>
    <<Address 1>>
    <<Address 2>>
    <<City>>, <<St>> <<Zip>>
Normally, I can just combine address 1 and address 2 into one line separated by a space and it's no big deal. I've tried using the merge option to delete the empty line, but it has never worked properly.
My main concern is the second line. Not all records have a spouse associated with them and when merged, I have to go in an manually delete the entire line. Is there a way to fix this?

I've tried using the merge option to delete the empty line, but it has never worked properly.
That's odd; it's pretty much exactly what you are asking after. Can you tell us anything outside of "it has never worked properly"?
Is there anything non-standard about your merge? (I.e. unusual text encoding, images, master pages, n-up merges, et cetera.) Can you take screenshots of your merge dialogs? Or give us a step-by-step rundown of what you are doing? Are you previewing before merge?
I am an infrequent but long-time user of Data Merge, and I've always been able to use the "Remove blank lines for empty fields" checkbox without issue.

  • InDesign Data Merge w/Multiple Page Document

I am working to print a multiple-page newsletter, and printing the mailing information using a Data Merge in InDesign CS4 (PC), with the intent of printing this in-house to send to our members. (My office has been doing this successfully for years using Publisher, but I insisted we update to InDesign.)
I have the document ready, and I have the Data Source information (set up in tab-delimited (.txt) text format).
After I have selected the Data Source (Window > Automation > Data Merge), inserted the Data Fields, and then Created Merged Document, I wind up with multiple versions of the Document; one for each person we are sending the newsletter to!
I was working with our printer technician to solve the issue, but his sources told him that the only way to do this was by using one document as the newsletter master and another document as the Data Merge document, and doing a little magic thru the PostScript driver in the printer.
(Specifically: the document is letter-sized, set to print as a booklet. The work-around involves copying and pasting these pages into a new tabloid-sized document, creating another blank tabloid-sized document that has only the Data Merge info in the proper place, printing the cover with this Data Merge separately, loading that into a drawer, and printing the new document and wrapping it with the pre-printed cover.)
1 - What am I doing wrong that gives me over 800 InDesign documents for this newsletter?
2 - Is there a way for me to print this without the work around?

That is what Indesign does when it does a data merge, it creates copies of the document and there's no way to change this.  Have you tried exporting to PDF (In CS4 you can do this in one step from the original) and printing?  I've never had anyone confirm it definitively but I'm pretty sure that the PDF created will be an 'optimized' one, meaning that when it sends it off to a compatible printer the images will be sent once and cached, with only the text that changes being sent separately.
Definitely worth comparing it to Publisher for speed anyway, Office programs can merge straight to the printer, but in effect they're doing the same thing.  There are programs out there for doing far fancier stuff than data merge, probably the best is XM Pie, but unless you've got a printer that recognises their language they're a waste of time in this circumstance anyway.
