Data recovery after system restore and corrupt user account.

A few months ago I was in the middle of a school assignment and my HP laptop started acting strange. I would try to move an image and a copy of it would remain in its place. I couldn't delete the picture either, but I could "cut" the image. Well,
I ended up restarting the computer and when I logged on it logged me into a temporary account because my account failed to log on. Not knowing exactly what was going on or what to do we ended up doing a system restore like a dummy and restarted the computer.
Well, when I logged back in everything was gone, all my school stuff was gone. What do I do can I get these back without having to pay a lot of money to do so? I am a single mother of two and there is no way I can afford anything.

I'm assuming that, since this post is 2 years old, rachbutterfly81 has already moved on with her life. But, since this is the second time I've run into this problem, and this is the first time I've found a solution that worked, I thought I would add my two
cents. Of course I do agree that the original response was a little heavy for a mother of two, but it did work for me (with some slight variation that I will get to).
I definitely disagree with Mr. Malotte's statement that all her files were deleted by the system restore. She was obviously logged in under a temporary account, and so all her original files were fine and stored under the same location they always were.
There was no need for her to purchase additional software to "recover" her files when they were all there under her original account name. All she would have had to do to find her files (assuming she was running Windows Vista or 7) was to open her "C:" drive
and navigate to the "C:\Users\" directory and look for the folder with her account name.
Anyway, the first solution worked for me, BUT there is absolutely no reason to delete the original account folder as Magon suggests in step 3!
Simply rename it. Once you finish step 5 and delete the original registry key (I recommend backing it up by right clicking on the key and selecting export), there is no reason to reboot your machine. There are some additional steps to make
life a little easier though. I've added them to a modified version of the original:
1. If you know you have another administrative account you can use, go ahead and restart your PC to release the locks on your profile. If you don't have another account to use, you can create one by going to "Add or remove user accounts" in the control panel.
Select "Create a new account," name it whatever you want, check the Administrator box, and click "Create Account" (you may want to consider adding a password to this account as well). Now you can restart.
2. Log on with another administrative account
3. Rename your original profile to something different. For the sake of simplicity, we'll pretend it was called "myaccount." So, you would rename "C:\Users\myaccount" to "C:\Users\myaccount.original." It really doesn't matter what you name it, so long as it
is different than it was and you can still find it again.
4. Delete C:\Users\TEMP
5. Delete the registry key matching your SID from
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList". Check the value "ProfileImagePath" to make sure you pick your own profile.
6. Log off and then log into your original account. Everything will still look messed up, like before, but it will not warn you that you are logged in under a temporary account.
7.While logged in, navigate to your user directory (not C:\Users\myaccount.original, but the current one you are logged in under, C:\Users\myaccount) and copy any files you see that say "ntuser" in them into your original profile directory (C:\Users\myaccount.original).
Most likely, you won't be able to see any, so you will need show hidden files. Hit
Alt on your keyboard, and you should see the menu bar appear. Select "Tools" and then "Folder Options". Select the "View" tab, and under "Hidden files and folders" check the option to "Show hidden files, folders, and drives." While you are
at it, uncheck the box next to "Hide protected operating system files."
8.Once you've copied the files over, go ahead and log out. You will need to log into your other administrative account once more.
9.Rename the new account (or delete it if you want), and rename your original account back to what it was (so "C\Users\myaccount.original" will be renamed to "C:\Users\myaccount").
10. Log out and now log in using your original account. Some things may not work as they originally did (for instance, I had to log into dropbox again and go through the setup process), but most things will. Most importantly, all your files should still
be there.

  • Audit Issue in QA after system restore and client copy

    Hi Experts,
We have an audit issue and need your advise on that.
Our QA system was audited and auditors were looking for the approval tickets on which a user was created. I found that several users that were not created in QA and do not even exist in QA have their change logs in QA showing that user was created.
I researched it and found the steps that Basis and DBA's do when creating a new QA client.
    1. Basis export user master and authorizations using SAP_USER profile from the target QA environment.
    2. Then DBA's restore the QA Environment from the Production Backup.
    3. Basis import back the preserved User master and roles using SAP_USER profile.
But when reading about this profile, I came to understand that change documents ( USH* ) tables are not exported and imported back. So that is why we have change logs in our QA from Production system.
So my question is how to solve this issue, where Auditors look at the change documents in QA and ask for the documentation though in reality these change documents are coming from Production. Should we ask for DBA team to truncate USH tables or is there a client copy profile that saves the change logs that we can export and import back.

    Hi,
as you know the USH* tables belong to delivery class L. The tables in this class are never copied during client copy but you don't do client copy. Idea of deleting records from L tables after backup restore does not sound good because you will loose all data. As a workaround you could backup content of tables with delivery class L, export users SAP_USER, restore production backup, import users and import backup for tables with delivery class L. There is around 5000 L tables in ECC. Another approach could be to restore production on different box and do proper client copy to QA system.
    Cheers

  • Can't activate after system restore and reinstall

I recently installed adobe acrobat pro on my laptop, everything was working perfectly until I faced another unrelated issue that meant I needed to perform a system restore to a point before I had installed adobe acrobat.
After the system restore obviously my registry had been rolled back quite a bit and so I needed to reinstall acrobat. After reinstallation (downloaded the installer from the acrobat site on my acrobat.com account and let it install the same as last time) when I launch acrobat I get an error that my acrobat subscription cannot be validated.
This is the only PC I have installed acrobat on so it doesn't seem to make sense, even if it considered this to be a new installation then it should at least activate as my second installation.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I am not familiar with the limitations on the subscription set, but you may have to contact Adobe and explain the issue. It may be they have to reset your activation or whatever is done with the subscription. Typically when you start, you would be asked to provide your ID that you used to purchase Acrobat.

  • Problem with Photoshop and Corrupt User Account

This morning when I attempted to save a document I was working on in Photoshop CS3, the application suddenly crashed. Since then, I have not been able to reopen Photoshop without it quitting unexpectedly within seconds of launch. Never had this happen before. I tried rebooting, resetting the PRAM, fixing disk permissions, repairing the disk, rebuilding the directory with DiskWarrior, trashing Photoshop's preference files and reinstalling the program with no change. None of the other apps on my computer seem affected, only Photoshop.
What did make a difference was creating a new user account. While logged in to the new account, Photoshop launches fine and I can work in it with no problem. I also have a Carbon Copy Cloner backup of my boot drive (which I've failed to keep up to date - it's a few months old) and Photoshop works fine from there (if I boot from the clone).
So it seems that my primary user account has become corrupted. What I'm wondering is if (1), I can "repair" my old User Account or (2), if I should move all my user files to the new User Account (and the best way to do that) or (3), if I should try and update the clone of my hard drive without transferring any of the User Account or possible OS corruption to it and then wipe my primary drive clean (after I've tested the clone) and reclone the clone back to the primary.
    Thanks for reading.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Files Recovery After System Restored to Factory Default?

    Dear Friends,
Last month I bought Lenovo X100e in Germany. Last night I got a virus attack that blocked every thing. I had to restore the system to factory default. Unfortunately I forgot that I haven't taken the backup of the pictures of my two weeks long Euro trip  :-(
Now I want to restore my Old Folders and Files. I didn't make any new partitions and was storing everything in drive C.
During restore I noticed that the system spent most of the time running some command like backing up C drive. But after everything was set, I couldn't find any back up information.
Does Thinkpad restore tool really stores back up information before overwriting the C drive? Can I get my files back with available tools? If not what is the best tool to recover my folders and files, preferably with original name and size.
I shall be grateful if you kindly guide me in this regard.

  • After system restore to back up have lost texts, photos and app data

Speakers not working on iphone all of a sudden and volume switches not working (just the volume comes up but no bars at the bottom).  So did system restore and more problems.
After I did this restore (to my backup done today) to my iphone 4s, I now have no text messages on my phone, no photos and no data on my nike running app (6months of records of runs).  Have searched through these forums and still stuck.
I think I'm going to have to take my iphone somewhere for the speaker issue, but have no idea where as optus sent it out to me directly via mai l(Adelaide, Australia).
In the meantime, I really want my texts, photos and app data back on my phone.
    any help HUGELY appreciated..

thanks for your reply.  I am trying the restore again now.
But no, I still have no sound, so it was all for naught.  Its fine if I have headphones in, and fine if its in a dock or connected to bluetooth, the phone also rings and I can hear people on the phone:  the only sound that doesnt work is music playing through the speaker, and video.  Also when I press the volume up and down buttons, nothing works.  I suspect there is something wrong with the docking connection as far as I can see from other peoples questions on here.
But the loss of texts and app data is just the icing on the cake

I have uploaded an old itunes library by mistake - any way that I can go back to my previous library.  Unable to do a system restore and I don't know where to find an up to date music/playlist file.  I was originally trying to recover a playlist that vanished after I had updated one of the ipads, did an online search, followed the instructions only to discover that I had loaded an itunes library from 2 years ago.  Stupidly I thought that it had updated itself and didn't realise I had to do it.  Any he

  • After system restore i reinstalled firefox, how to get back bookmarks etc with old firefox data?

After system restore the only thing i have is old firefox data on desktop if all bookmarks, passwords are recovered it will be great help.
    P.S
i reinstall firefox from drive other than c ,that was in downloaded form.
    Thanks

The "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop has been created as the consequence of resetting Firefox.
Doing a Session Restore may have reverted the profiles.ini file to a previous version that hasn't registered the new profile folder that a reset had created, so you may need to check for this.
    * C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and Windows 7 and later versions are hidden folders.
If you have a profile folder that is more recent than the "Old Firefox Data" on the desktop then you can use edit the profiles.ini file and change the path of the currently default profile to the name of the profile folder as you find in Document and Settings.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
It is always best to be cautious with using System Restore as this can cause some file to be replaced with older copies, i.e. your Firefox installation and profile folder can get inconsistent and you may have to reinstall Firefox as well.

  • How to recover hp pre-installed games and office after system restore for HP Mini 210-4127se?

how to recover hp pre-installed games and office after system restore for HP Mini 210-4127se?

    Hi,
You can reinstall them from Recovery Manager by clicking on Start=> All Programs.
If you have performed a complete HP Recovery using F11 then all the software should be there. If you have performed a minimized recovery then you can install applications from recovery manager...If none of these works then you'll need USB recovery..
Here are the links that will guide you through the process:
Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 7)

    Order USB Recovery
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem

  • I can only print first 80 or so pages after I download firefox - if I do a system restore and uninstall firefox, the problem goes away... until I download firefox again and then I again can only print the first 80 or so pages - even if I am using IE!

This began when business increased in January and our print jobs got big (printing invoices off the internet). It can print any small job no problem but if it's over 80 or so pages, it will stop and show a spooling error. I have done system restores and uninstalled firefox and then Internet Explorer will print the big jobs UNTIL I REINSTALL FIREFOX. Then the problem resurfaces whether using firefox or IE!!! Why?! I don't care why - how do I fix it? All 13 other computers use firefox and that is how my staff is trained. I hate IE.

  • Uploading backup discs after system restore completed

model # g60-530us - recovery program by cyberlink.    first - when i go to the restore menu, I do not have the menu that hp site says should be there.  I only have the microsoft system restore and the ystem restore.  no others.  second - after running system recovery and reformatting the disc.  restore from the factory works as was supposed to.   does all ok.  when i go to reload the backup discs created, i do not have the option to reload them on startup.  I reload them by going to disc one and starting it myself.  this puts in a system recovery file on the disc.  how do i recover the files to their origional settings and folders?  My system runs, i see the folders but can only use them from the recovery folder, not as they were before my system became corrupt.   HELP!

running the Restore.exe  or RecoveryMgr.exe on the backup disc will expand all the backed up files to a folder on the C drive called "System Recovery", you will have to figure out where to put them.
Some of the files are junk and have no use, look in your old user account folder for pictures and whatever files you had saved on the old system.
Its not a very good backup software included with HP Recovery, it saves all the files but does not sort them or put them back where they go.

  • Can I filter out a corrupted user account and app as part of a migration?

I am in the process of upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I did an erase and install because of some issues with the old system, one being a corrupted user account. I am reluctant to use Migration Assistant because I don't want to bring that corrupted account over.
I have read in some other posts that if you already have a user account with a certain name in Leopard and you try to bring over one with the same same from Tiger, it will not transfer. Is this correct? If that is so I would create a user account in Leopard with the same name as the corrupted account in Tiger and that would block it, right? The next question is what constitutes the user account name, is it the designated name, often the computer name or is it the short name, often the same as the designated name but run together if it is two words. I guess I could just duplicate both names the way they appear in Tiger. Will that do it?
On a related note, is there any substantial difference between doing a simple upgrade on the one hand as opposed to an erase and install and then using migration assistant to bring everything over that way? I have a QT issue and along with the corrupted user account, I made the decision to use the erase and install option and essentially start from scratch. This, however, creates a lot of extra and perhaps unnecessary work. Would it help if I just deleted QT in Tiger so it couldn't be migrated?

There is a Mac OS X 10.5 help topic that answers most of your questions. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available online & obviously, you can't access it on your own Mac without Leopard already being installed -- a bit of a Catch-22!
Anyway, below I have copied the text of that topic from my own Help Viewer. It lacks the formatting of the original, but I hope it will be of some use to you anyway.
*Using Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac*
If you need to transfer your files and important settings from an older Mac to a new one, and both computers use Mac OS X, you can use Migration Assistant.
Before using Migration Assistant, make sure you have a FireWire cable to connect the two computers.
NOTICE: If you experienced problems while using some files or applications on your old computer, you may not want to transfer those files and applications to your new computer. If you do, you may transfer corrupted data or incompatible files.
To transfer files using Migration Assistant:
1 On your new computer, open Migration Assistant, located in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Read the Introduction screen, and then click Continue.
2 If a dialog appears, type your password, and then click OK.
3 In the Migration Method screen, select “From another Mac,” and then click Continue.
4 Connect a FireWire cable from your new Mac to your older Mac, and then click Continue.
5 Follow the instructions in Migration Assistant to restart your older Mac and select the hard disk and user accounts from which you want to transfer. Then, select whether you want to transfer applications, files and folders, or your Library folder.
NOTE: When you first open a transferred application on your new computer, you may need to reenter the application’s serial number or registration code.
6 Select whether you want to use your old network, time zone, and sharing settings, and then click Transfer.
When Migration Assistant is finished, click Quit.
You can use Migration Assistant with a MacBook Air if both computers are connected to the same Ethernet or wireless network. See “MacBook Air: How to use Migration Assistant” at the Apple support website.

all my programs are opening in adobe even the system restore and the regisrty -
how do I reset all programs to their originall default programs.
    Please help.
PS I have also tried starting in save mode and still have the same problem.

    Hi,
    As
BurrWalnut mentioned, first please run a virus scan to eliminate virus infection (if AV program is not opened in adobe)
The files association could be corrupted in your situation, apart from the solution posted in the first reply, I also suggest you check Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set your Default Programs or Associate a file type or protocol
with a progra,, manually check the association and check if it can do some help.
Add: another way to open restore point is launching it in recovery console, please refer to this guide

  • ITunes dead after System Restore

I can no longer launch iTunes, and this has nothing to do with spyware.
    Sequence of Events:
    1) Last Thursday, I purchased a new track from itms (Iggy Pop - Candy - it's good, check it out).
    2) Upon trying to play the track, I was presented with the message that the computer was not authorized to play the track. Other songs I tried to play gave the same error. I had been perfectly content using iTunes 4.7. However, in order to play the tracks, I now needed to upgrade to the current version of iTunes. This was, imo, obnoxious, but I capitulated, and downloaded and installed v6.0.1.3. After installation, iTunes worked perfectly fine.
    3) Thursday evening I shut the computer down for the evening. I didn't use the system again until Sunday evening. When I powered the machine up, Windows booted to a black screen. Safe mode worked properly, but 'normal'-mode would not light the display (this is a laptop). Not knowing what was wrong yet, I tried using System Restore to return the system to a slightly earlier state. The most recent checkpoint was just before installing the iTunes update, so that's where I restored to.
    4) System Restore didn't fix the problem. That's when I discovered the switch on the laptop that senses whether or not the lid is closed was broken, and it was telling Windows the lid was closed, resulting in the darkened screen. (I've removed the switch while I wait for the replacement plastic piece I need, so that's no longer an issue.)
    5) System Restore did not have the option to undo the previous System Restore.
    6) I then re-installed iTunes 6.0.1.3. Each time I try to launch iTunes, I see the standard MS "Do you want to send the error info to Microsoft?" message box, and iTunes won't start.
To try and repair the problem, I've tried uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime repeatedly. I've tried System Restore, and then a reinstall, several times. I've been a Computer Tech since '94, and routinely remove spyware problems from people's computers in a professional capacity. I am certain my iTunes problem is not malware-related. However, just to cover all bases I went ahead and followed the Apple doc referenced repeatedly in these forums involving MSCONFIG to ensure my iTunes problem wasn't related to some startup issue. I've taken the iTunes folder, with the library.itl and .xml files, and moved it to the desktop prior to reinstalling iTunes. I've uninstalled, and then deleted the Program Files\iTunes and Program Files\iPod directories prior to reinstallation. I've disabled my antivirus during the install.
No matter what I've tried, iTunes will no longer start.
Anybody have any ideas what I can try next to revive iTunes on my PC. I very much don't want to lose my existing playlists, album art, and music files (especially the approx. $130 of purchased music), obviously.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    well done, NoahsMyBro!
hmmmm. some thoughts (speculation warning) on what might have gone wrong with the QT. a system restore "over top" of a fresh itunes install will strip out some installation registry entries from both QT and itunes. (under those circumstances, itunes won't launch, spitting out a "some of the required files ..." error message.)
under those circumstances, i usually recommend uninstall QT and itunes prior to the reinstall. (of course, you had other more pressing things to worry about at the time ...) i've been doing that because the QT component of the itunes installer bundle can be a little more delicate than the itunes component when it comes to installing "over top" of existing program files and folders. i think it's partly to do with the fact that it's the second install in the chained install (more can go wrong with it). so the QT may have been compromised on the reinstall, even though the itunes part of the install went through fine.
you don't tend to get the same QT install problems on a standalone QT install (again, speculation, but it seems plausible) because it's not the second install in a chain.
    love, b
