Data Refresh and slicers in Sharepoint

I am wondering if someone can explain the difference between refreshing data in sharepoint and utilizing the slicers. I am a little confused about how and where the data is actually stored, is it in the powerpivot model or in the database? If I design
a powerpivot model in excel using a query that points to a SQL server database, is this data actually stored in the excel workbook? If i publish a workbook to sharepoint, is it an actual workbook containing data or more of a data model? Where is the data being
stored and is the automatic refresh necessary if I am using a slicer? The thought being that if powerpivot is only acting as a data model, clicking the slicer would trigger a refresh by re-querying the sql server database especially if the model has been released
from the cache in SSAS where the analysis is happening. I have been working with powerpiot and doing research, however, there seems to be conflicting information about what powerpivot actually does and how it works. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Josh

Hi Josh,
If we create a PowerPivot data model and load data into it, the data is highly compressed and resides within the .xlsx file itself.  If you have published your workbook to a PowerPivot Gallery or Sharepoint site that supports PowerPivot, we should update
the data from the source whenever you choose. For detail information, please see:

Slicers are one-click filtering controls that narrow down the data shown in PivotTables and PivotCharts, it can be used interactively to display data changes when you apply filters. For more information, please see:

  • Analyzer for Excel and Office 2007: Issue on Data Refresh and Parameters

    Hi all,
    for a customer BIP workshop I want to prepare a demo and experience a strange issue. Hope this is known and bugfix or workaround exists.
    Created a very simple demo report with two columns and a numeric parameter. Called Excel Analyzer, the document opens correctly in Excel, data are filtered properly using the parameters initial value. I always have to log in to BI Publisher Server first, when a new instance of Excel is opened.
    Then I choose 'Show parameters' from the BIP add-on menu. My parameter is shown with its correct inital value. But: After pressing 'Refresh Data' (regardless if parameter value has been changed or not), a VBA error message (Code 1004) occurs. Then the excel cursor remains hourglass and no BIP related function is available in this opened Excel instance anymore.
    And another thing: After choosing 'Show Parameters' there appears a new empty column under 'Report Parameters' and the first cells of the table data are overwritten with parameter values.
    Think, something goes wrong there with Excel 2007. Unfortunately I only can use this version.
    Thanks in advance for hints. If I cannot fix this until Friday, customer will probably not be exalted by BIP :( .

    fschulze,
    I face the same issue in Excel 2003: Run-time error 91, Object variable or With block variable not set.
    This happens everytime when I try to refresh the data after I open a saved excel template. But the refresh works fine when the report is initially downloaded using the Analyzer for Excel button
    Have you found the workaround for this problem ?
    Thanks.

  • Data Grid - issues resizing width of columns and with data refresh and sort

    SQLDeveloper 1215 on Windows XP professional
    Database : various 9.2
    In the table data tab there are a few minor issues our developers have highlighted.
    1) There seems to be a minimum column width in the data display. This restricts flexibility in reviewing the data, esp. where the data length is less than the minimum column width.
    2) If a column is resized or the column order is changed and a refresh or a new filter is applied then the columns are restored to their original position and size making it frustrating to run more than one query via the GUI.
    3) There is no quick sort option by clicking on the column heading which would be useful.

    I am still seeing this minimum column width in SQL Developer production (v1467) and I haven't seen any other posts relating to this. I have seen this all of the grids that I have looked at, including all of the grid based sub-tabs for the Object tabs (ie Columns, Data, Indexes, Constraints, etc) and the SQL Worksheet results tab.
    It is very obvious with the Column Name and Data Type columns of the Table Columns tab - the Column Name column can be shrunk to truncate values but the Data Type column can only be shrunk to about the twice the width of the widest value.
    Can anyone in development provide any comments about why we have this minimum width and how the minimum width is actually calculated?

  • "External Data Refresh Failed" in Excel Workbook in SharePoint 2013

      Hi Everyone,
    I hope someone can help me sort this out. I wasn't sure if this should be submitted to SQL Server 2012 or SharePoint 2013 but I think I have ruled out an actual SQL issue here.
    I have a test SharePoint 2013 Farm installed on one server.  On that server we have SQL Server 2012 Standard (Database Engine Only) installed as one instance for SharePoint 2013.  SharePoint 2013 is installed as Enterprise.
    On another server I have SQL Server 2012 Enterprise installed I have both the Database Engine and Analysis Services installed on that server in one Instance.
    I have created a new Analysis Services Cube and stored in on that server using VS 2012 Data Tools.   I then use Office 2013 Excel and create a new Pivot Table and bring in that data into that workbook.  I save that workbook to my desktop and
    can click on the DATA tab and do a "Refresh All" and the data is refreshed with no problem.
    I then Save that Workbook to SharePoint 2013 in my Business Center documents library. I then try to do a Data Refresh and get the following error: External Data Refresh Failed. We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in the workbook. The following
    connections failed to refresh: servername ConnectionName.
    Let me tell you a little bit about how I have my SharePoint 2013 setup.
    In Application Management ==> Secure Store Service - I have a Target Application Id setup with an AD account name and password.
    In Application Management ==> Excel Services Application Settings - I an using an Unattended Service Account that is pointing to the Target Application ID that I setup in Secure Store Service.
    Now in SQL Server 2012. I have made the AD account name and password a SYSADMIN account (because nothing seemed to work) and mapped that login to my Database that I created my cube from.
    I have went into the Properties of my Analysis Server on SQL Server 2012 and out that AD userid in the Security Page as a Server Administrator.
    Now let me tell you the real kicker here.
    I also have a Sharepoint 2010 farm that we have been testing for about a year.  This is something we wanted to go into production with but now have decided we will deploy our new production site on 2013.
    This has the same setup only I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 as my database for SharePoint 2010, and am using SQL Server 2008 R2 on another server and instance for Database Engines and Analysis Server.
    I have already created a cube on the SQL 2008 r2 Analysis Server using BIDS.
    I created a Excel Pivot Table based on that cube and save it to the SharePoint 2013 site.
    I then put the SSS AD account name on the SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services Security as Administrator.
    I pull up that Excel Workbook and go into Data and do a Refresh All and it works.
    I then bring up my copy of the Excel workbook I created for my SQL Server 2012 Cube (this does not work on SP 2013) and save it to my Business Center in SP 2010.  This will do a DATA Refresh on that workbook.
    Another thing that I have done, (we have Office Web Apps Server running on the SP 2013 side), is set SPWOPISuppressSetting -view -extension xlsx so that when I bring up the Excel spreadsheet in 2013 it has a url with the xlviewer instead of the WOPI
    url.
    OK.  I have went through all of my setup.   I am must wondering if I missed something in my install for this.  HELP.   There can't be that much difference in the installation between 2010 and 2013.
    Thanks in Advance everyone.

    After many hours of research and totally burning down my SQL Server 2012 server because of the many changes I made to it, I finally found the issue that caused this and specifically why SP would not work with SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services.  This
    time I reinstalled SQL Server 2012 from scratch again but only put SP1 on at this time.  I can't be completely sure this fixed the issue since I have not put any of the other CU  on the box.  But, after the reinstall, everything seemed to work
    perfectly from the Excel Services side.
    The issue I then ran into was that I could not get my PerformancePoint Services to work with my Cubes that were created on SQL Server 2012.  I received Error Message " The DataSource Provider for data sources of type 'ADOMD.NET' is not registered" on
    my SharePoint 2013 Server Event Viewer.
    I finally found this post on the issue:
    http://yossidahan.wordpress.com/2012/08/14/cant-get-ssas-databases-to-appear-in-performance-point-dashboard-designer-check-you-adomd-net-version/
    Seems that SP 2013 is built to use SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services, so you need to install the ADOMD.net from SQL Server 2008 in order for it to work.   But make sure you install Version 10 since if you install any other it doesn't seem to
    work.
    I feel like I wasted a whole month tracking these issues down, and I haven't been able to test PowerView, PowerPivot or SSRS yet.  I hope there is not any more.

  • Need JavaScript for Sharepoint Designer 2010, to show a Pop-up to all the users between date range and the redirect the site

    Dear all,
    I am very new to Sharepoint designer 2010. Its better to say, i am just stepping in.
    I have sharepoint site which is accessible for all the users to update few information. But i want this site not to be accessible during a date range, say from 15th to 20th of every month.
    I am planning to have something like this: If any user tries to access this sharepoint site between 15th to 20th date range of everymonth, then the browser must show an pop-up alert saying "This site is not accessible during this date range" and Redirect
    this sharepoint site to someother site (Say http:// somesitename.xx.com) immidiately.
    I know very little about how to add Javascript in sharepoint webpart.
    Please provide the Javascript or any best alternate solution to my concern.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    From your description, my understanding is that you want to redirect sharepoint site to another site between 15th and 20th every month.
    I agree with what Sudip says. If you still want to use JS code,You could try these steps
    below:
    Open your site with SharePoint Designer.
    Click Master Pages in left navigation.
    Find file v4.master, and backup it(it is very important).
    Right click your v4.master,
    choose "Edit File in Adavance Mode".
    Add the code below into the <head/> tag.
    <script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.1.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script><script
    type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function(){
    var today = new Date();
    var day = today.getDate(); // get current day
    var id = _spPageContextInfo.userid; // get the id of current logon in user
    var boolFlg = false;
    $.ajax({
       url: _spPageContextInfo.webAbsoluteUrl + "/_api/web/SiteGroups/GetByName(\'"+"sharepoint Owners"+"\')/Users", //get users in a specified group can access the sharepoint site from 15th to 20th every
    month
       type: "GET",
       headers: {"accept": "application/json;odata=verbose"},
       success: function (data) {
          if (data.d.results) {
             var src = data.d.results;
             for(var i = 0; i < src.length; i++){
                if(src[i].userid==id){ //check the logon in user in  the specified group or not
                   boolFlg = false;
                   break;
             if(!boolFlg){
                if(day <= 20 && day >=15){
                    alert("This site is not accessible during this date range"); // alert the message
                    location.href = "http:// somesitename.xx.com"; // redirect to another site
       error: function (xhr) {
          alert(xhr.status + ': ' + xhr.statusText);
    })</script>

  • How scheduling the data refresh for a published Excel workbook - SharePoint 2013

    Hi,
    I've implemented an Excel workbook that connects to a SSAS Tabular data source and I've published it on SharePoint.
    Now, how can I implement a scheduled data refresh if it is possible?
    Thanks

    Hi pscorca,
    If  my understanding is correct , you want to implement a scheduled data refresh on SharePoint 2013 and the data is from a SSAS Tabular data source.

  • Data refresh of Excel file on Sharepoint 2013 Online (E3)

    Is it possible to refresh data in an Excel PowerPivot model from external data (SQL Server 2012) on the
    SharePoint 2013 Online solution that comes with the Office365 E3 plan?
    I need to either have the Excel file itself on the public facing website with data refresh there, or possibly have the Excel file in a private Business Intelligence Center subsite and then publish webparts or whatever on the public site, as long as the charts
    are refreshed and publicly viewable. I've found a lot of conflicting info on this.
    Re
    D

    Currently, when a workbook that contains a Data Model is published to a library in Office 365, data refresh is unavailable.
    However, you can use a PowerShell script to configure a workaround.
    donwload this white paper for workaround:

  • Secure Store Service and Schedule Data Refresh

    Hi
    Can you please let us know how many (max) target application's we can create under 1 secure store service application?
    As we know, Manage Data Refresh feature is only available for PowerPivot Service Report and we can access it from Sharepoint to schedule the Workbook for Data Refresh.
    As per our requirement, we need to build a interface to use this Schedule data refresh feature in a separate browser not from SharePoint. Please let us know how to build this interface, is there any option to use API Web Service.
    Thanks in advance.

    I created a simple Excel 2013 PPIV workbook with an oracle data source and uploaded that to SharePoint 2013, but no change in the results - still getting the above error.
    What is this error? We have installed Oracle client (64-bit, since we use 64-bit Excel and Sp is also 64-bit) on SSAS PPIV Server and SharePoint Content DB Server. Do we need
    to install it anywhere else?
    Thanks,
    Sonal

    Hi Sonal,
    To use PowerPivot for SharePoint on SharePoint 2013, it is required to install PowerPivot for SharePoint with the Slipstream version of SQL Server 2012 SP1. If you install SQL Server 2012 and then use the upgrade version of SQL Server 2012 SP1 to upgrade,
    the environment will not support SharePoint 2013.
    I would suggest you refer to the following articles:

  • Data refresh problem - QaaWS and Tomcat cache

    Hi Experts,
    I have a problem with data refreshing in Xcelsius 2008 dashboard when I use QaaWS.
    System is: BO XI 3.1 on the Win2008 server.
    When data are changing in the database InfoView documents show it immediately, but into the Xcelsius dashboards new data not coming.
    In the dashboards I use auto refresh, and Refresh button too... It doesn't help.
    New data are appearing just after restarting of Tomcat.
    Maybe Tomcat is caching data...?
    Do somebody have similar issue? Could you suggest me something to do?
    Thx,
    János

    Hi Janos,
    Tomcat has cache which the default time is 60 seconds.
    You can change the cache time when you create QaaWS wsdl.
    If you do NOT want the cache, you can
    1. locate to: ${BOE Install Path}\Business Objects\Tomcat55\webapps\dswsbobje\WEB-INF\classes
    2. Open dsws.properties
    3. Find the property qaaws.cache_dpresult.optim= and set it to false.
    4. Re-start tomcat.
    Hope this can help!

  • Why does the new iOS 8.0.2 software refresh your apps if you back out to text or check another app? It's frustrating and its racking up my data charges and I really don't like it!

    look I updated my phone to iOS 8.0.2 and now any time I back out of an app to text someone or check on another app it refreshes the page (if I'm on the internet) or the app and it's really annoying. If someone could please tell me how to fix this or just help get a new software up please do. It is racking up my data usage with all the refreshing and its getting really annoying and expensive.
    Thank you.

    Same issue here both with my iphone 5S as well as my iPad2. THe sync to my macbook air does not complete and it shows a large overcapacity level when connected, but once I disconnect there is plenty of room (4 GB) available, not a 20 GB overage.

  • Problem in scheduling data refresh of excel file that uses PowerQuery and PowerQuery

    I think I have successfully created and enabled the gateway and data sources for refresh - they are both seeming to connect.  However, when I try to schedule a data refresh to occur in the PowerBI site for the Excel file I receive an error message
    that the connection could not be established and receive error message "Correlation ID: d118ab93-436d-44a9-8c09-564f64fe0c58".  Appreciate any assistance in figuring out how to resolve.  Thanks a lotl

    Brookseed,
    Is this still an issue?
    Thanks!
