Data warehouse VS Active data warehouse

Hi,
I was reading about active data warehousing (ADW) in a book, which says, that ADW is featured by "event-driven actions". ADW supports near-time or near-real-time decision making. eg a retail store may get to know that they are running short of some items and need to place an order.
It means that ADW is also use for controlling inventories, just like OLTP systems. This point is bit confusing for me because as per my knowledge datawarehouse is meant for decision making.
Any comments/suggestions.

"ADW supports near-time or near-real-time decision making. eg a retail store may get to know that they are running short of some items"
The ADW in this case plays the role here of alerting that the business is running short of specific items.
The following statement: "and need to place an order"
Implies that indeed an order needs to be placed. But this step in the process occurs in the OLTP system and not in the ADW.
A better example of an ADW could apply to an Airline. They may want to know how the sales of tickets are behaving during the day... almost real time... so they can make adjustments to their promotions, marketing programs, etc. Here the ADW comes to play a very significant role in providing sales information in almost real time fashion. It gives the company the advantage of analyze current behavior. The DW comes to provide a Business with the historical version... years, months, quarters, and so on.
Regards.

  • Moving date is before activation date

    I am moving on the 26th of the month but my new activation date is not till the 30th due to the house we are moving to, not being disconnected from their provider till that day.
    A Pain but not a problem.
    The question I have is, where we are moving from will have our old number (and account as we are not taking the phone number with us) for about 4 days.
    Presumably they could run up a massive bill in that time that we would be charged for?
    Is that the case?

    Yes - but you need to license the Standby Database. So it is not really "free" - but you better ask that our sales people :-)

  • How to auto scroll a table to last row when using Active Data Service?  11g

    Hi all,
    Has anyone got any experience with the ADF Active Data Service?
    I am using an af:table in combination with the ADF Active Data Service and I want the table to scroll to the latest row when new data arrives.
    It is basically a simple setup:
    The value attribute of my table points to a bean that extends CollectionModel and implements ActiveDataModel. This works perfectly. A soon as I receive new data in my bean, the table is automatically updated (e.g. a new row is inserted). I use JDev version: 11.1.1.3
    The problem is that I can not get the scroll bar to move down to the last row automatically when new data arrives. The auto scroll only works for the client that actually performs a submit. In other words the person that submits the new data, will see his scrollbar move down, this is because I added the following code:
    RowKeySet rowkeysset = chatTableBinding.getSelectedRowKeys();
    rowkeysset.clear();
    rowkeysset.add(getRowKey());
    AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance().addPartialTarget(this.chatTableBinding);
    This does not work for the clients that receive the new data via the Active data model. Apparently the active data service partially refreshes the table, but not in such a way that it sets the selected row to the last row?
    My table definition:
    <af:table value="#{pageFlowScope.chatBean.instantMessagingChatwindowBean}" var="row"
    id="t1" columnStretching="last" rows="10"
    styleClass="AFStretchWidth" autoHeightRows="10" contentDelivery="immediate"
    horizontalGridVisible="false"
    verticalGridVisible="false"
    disableColumnReordering="true" displayRow="last"
    rowSelection="single"
    binding="#{pageFlowScope.chatBean.instantMessagingChatwindowBean.chatTableBinding}"
    inlineStyle="height:80px;">
    p.s.
    The table is used to show incoming chat message.
    I am building a chat client (taskflow) in a Webcenter application. The concept is similar of that presented by Lucas Jellemain in his blogpost on building a Google Talk Client http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/jellema-googletalk-094343.html

    Dan,
    This is a thanks for posting your findings. You saved me quite some time.
    <af:selectBooleanCheckbox id="showOnlyActiveSubscriptions" selected="true"
    label="Show only active services:"
    value="#{servicePortfolioBean.showOnlyActiveSubscriptions}"
    autoSubmit="true" />
    <af:table binding="#{servicePortfolioBean.serviceTable}" ...
    partialTriggers="showOnlyActiveSubscriptions">
    Of course, when I add a "ValueChangeListener" to the selectBooleanCheckbox, the PPR stops working. :( I wonder why?

  • Problem in Activating from  New data to Active data in DSO

    Hi All,
    For   my DSO I am fetcdhing some fields from other DSO table ,    through END Routine ,. After  running the DTP , I am getting data for the fileds which i am fetching through routine in New data Table.
    After Activating the New data table to Active data table I cant able to see my data.
    ie in Active data table there is no data for the fields which i am fetching through end routine after activating the request . One more thing my request is activated sucessfully.
    it shows ready for reporting.
    Please help me on this................................

    Hi ,
    After unchecking the checkboxes mentioned in my previous post and still if you dont find data in active table then I think the problem might be  because of Database Statistics not being up-to-date for your ODS tables which causes a delay in data load completion process. You can try refreshing the Database Statistics of your ODS both tables and indexes (active data table, change log table and new data table). This probably may resolve your problem.

  • Is there any documentation which throws light on how data aggregation happens in data warehouse grooming? what algorithm exactly it follows in different aggregation type (raw, hourly, daily)?

    Is there any documentation which throws light on how data aggregation happens in data warehouse grooming? what algorithm exactly it follows in different aggregation type (raw, hourly, daily)?
    How exactly it picks up a specific data value during Hourly aggregations and Daily aggregations?As in  How the value is chosen. Does it say averages out or simply picks  value at the start of the hour/day or end of the hour/day ??

    I'll try one more time. :)
    Views in the operations console are derived from data in the operational database. This is always raw data, and typically does not go back more than 7 days.
    Reports get data from the data warehouse. Unless you create a custom report that uses raw data, you will never see raw data in a report - Microsoft and probably all 3rd party vendors do not develop reports that fetch raw data.
    Reports use aggregated data - hourly and daily. The data is aggregated by min, max, and avg sample for that particular aggregation. If it's hourly data, then you will see the min, max, and avg for that entire hour. Same goes for daily - you will see the
    min, max, and avg data sample for that entire day.
    And to try clarifying even more, the values you see plotted on the report are avg samples. If you drill into the performance detail report, then you can see the min, max, and avg samples, as well as standard deviation (which is calculated based on these
    three values).

  • Need suggestion on Active data guard or Logical Stand by

    Hi All,
    Need a suggestion of on below scenario.
    We have a production database ( oracle version 11g R2 ) and planning to have a Logical standby or physical standy (Active data guard). Our usage of the standby database is below.
    1) Planning to run online reports (100+) 24x7. So might create additional indexes,materialized views etc.
    2) daily data feed ( around 300+ data files ) to data warehouse. daily night, jobs will be scheduled to extract data and send to warehouse. Might need additional tables for jobs usage.
    Please suggest which one is good.
    Regards,
    vara.

    Hello,
    In active dataguad Whig is feature from 11gRx ,
    If you choose active dataguard, you have couple of good options, one is you can make a high availability of your production database, which can act as image copy of production, as you are asking in 11g you have more advantage where you can open in read only mode and at the sometime MRP will be active, so you can redirect users to connect standby to perform select operations for reporting purpose. So that you can control much load on production ,
    Even uou can perform switchover in case of role change, perform failover if your primary is completely lost. Also you can convert to physical to logical standby databases & you can configure FSFO
    You have plenty of options with active dataguard.

  • Differences between the Portal Data Collector and the Activity Data Collect

    Hello,
    I want to know what are the differences between the Portal Data Collector and the Activity Data Collector?
    Best Regards.
    Pablo Mortera.

    All of my SQL Server instances  are sql server 2008r2 standard edition(10.50.2500). MDW is existing database, I try to setup collection sets for multiple instances and store data in one central MDW database
    I create MDW in one instance, then run run configure Management Data Warehouse in target intance. collection sets were created successfully, but job failed with following error:
    Executed as user: COCAD\INTDEPT01SQLAgentC10. The Management Data Warehouse version "00.00.0000.00" is not supported by the current data collector. Please upgrade the Management Data Warehouse by running the Management Data Warehouse Configuration
    Wizard.  Process Exit Code 5.  The step failed.

  • How to create DB partitioning in active data tables for ods?

    hi all,
    Can anyone let me know how to create DB partitioning in active data tables for ods. if any docs pls share with me at my email id : [email protected]
    regds
    haritha

    Haritha,
    The following steps will briefly explain you to improve the performance in terms of DB partitioning as well as loading. Please find the same,
    transaction RSCUSTA2,
    oss note 120253 565725 670208
    and remove 'bex reporting' setting in ods if that ods not used for reporting.
    hope this helps.
    565725
    Symptom
    This note contains recommendations for improving the load performance of ODS objects in Business Information Warehouse Release 3.0B and 3.1 Content.
    Other terms
    Business Information Warehouse, ODS object, BW, RSCUSTA2, RSADMINA
    Solution
    To obtain a good load performance for ODS objects, we recommend that you note the following:
    1. Activating data in the ODS object
    In the Implementation Guide in the BW Customizing, you can implement different settings under Business Information Warehouse -> General BW settings -> Settings for the ODS object that will improve performance when you activate data in the ODS object.
    1. Creating SIDs
    The creation of SIDs is time-consuming and may be avoided in the following cases:
    a) You should not set the indicator for BEx Reporting if you are only using the ODS object as a data store.Otherwise, SIDs are created for all new characteristic values by setting this indicator.
    b) If you are using line items (for example, document number, time stamp and so on) as characteristics in the ODS object, you should mark these as 'Attribute only' in the characteristics maintenance.
    SIDs are created at the same time if parallel activation is activated (see above).They are then created using the same number of parallel processes as those set for the activation. However:if you specify a server group or a special server in the Customizing, these specifications only apply to activation and not the creation of SIDs.The creation of SIDs runs on the application server on which the batch job is also running.
    1. DB partitioning on the table for active data (technical name:
    The process of deleting data from the ODS object may be accelerated by partitioning on the database level.Select the characteristic after which you want deletion to occur as a partitioning criterion.For more details on partitioning database tables, see the database documentation (DBMS CD).Partitioning is supported with the following databases:Oracle, DB2/390, Informix.
    1. Indexing
    Selection criteria should be used for queries on ODS objects.The existing primary index is used if the key fields are specified.As a result, the characteristic that is accessed more frequently should be left justified.If the key fields are only partially specified in the selection criteria (recognizable in the SQL trace), the query runtime may be optimized by creating additional indexes.You can create these secondary indexes in the ODS object maintenance.
    1. Loading unique data records
    If you only load unique data records (that is, data records with a one-time key combination) into the ODS object, the load performance will improve if you set the 'Unique data record' indicator in the ODS object maintenance.
    Hope this helps..

  • Active Data Guard Licensing

    I have no idea where to ask this question and if I'm asking in the wrong forum I'd appreciate it if someone can direct me to the right one.
    I have a physical standby server and I'd like add the Active Data Guard option to it to offload ETL processing. If I want to use named user plus licensing, how many named users to I need to pay for? There is only 1 server, 1 process, and 1 user that will be pulling data from this standby server into a SQL Server landing store database. Eventually the data will make it into a data warehouse (also SQL Server), SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Analysis Services. Between SSAS and SSRS there might be 100 distinct users on the front end, but they are all several levels removed from the standby server.
    So the question is how many named users do I need to buy? The definition of "named user plus" in the licensing definitions is about as clear mud. I think I only need 1. But it could be 25 based on minimum # of users for EE. And it could be 100 if every user of SSRS and SSAS is counted individually.
    I'm trying to avoid doing processor based licensing which is equally unclear but on initial impression seems to be much more expensive. The standby server in question has 2 dual core intel xeon processors, running on Windows 2008 R2. The version of Oracle is 11GR2 Enterprise Edition. If I've done the math right, processor licensing comes out to 23k.

    Hello;
    Active Data Guard does need a license and you are in the correct forum. But only your Oracle salesperson can answer this question.
    Was at Cloud Control class last month and several DBA's there thought everyone has a similar license agreement. Not true. So somebody here might guess at your answer, but in the end only Oracle's answer will count.

  • Active data retrieval

    I've created a report using an external data source, and set an active data retrieval interval.
    However, when i update a field, using sqlplus, it doesn't update the report.
    With an internal data source, it works fine.
    Can you help me with this?

    Theoretically, yes.
    Instead of using a External Data Source as the basis for the report, you could create a data object that is a replica of of the external source. And then you can have changes to the external data source, be replicated in the data object through an EL plan. I recommend this, since Enterprise Link resembles the ETL portion of any data warehouse, which should in charge of handling data cleansing and uploading. IMHO, this may result in data duplication, but you're better off than having your client hit that reprompt button every time she wants to view the report.
