Database Alert Rule Engine

Hello ,
I am running Oracle XE . This database collects information about server statistics in my organization ( memory usage, threads running, etc). Now , I need to send alert/ notification emails if the certain thresholds are crossed by server ( ex: if number of threads increase more than 100, send an alert email).
One way to do this is to write stored procedures and schedule them to run every hour and send alert email if conditions are met.
But what I want to do is to use some sort of rule engine where I can specify the rules/conditions which have to be true for alerts to be sent. The reason I want this approach is so that every time there is a new rule, I do not have to write a new stored procedure and I can just specify the condition in the rule engine .
So are there any Rule Engines out there that I can use?

Hi,
Yes.
Oracle has a monitoring tool built-in Entreprise Manager.
I suggest that you get started with:

    Hi All,
I  have cretaed my alert rule as follow.
    Conditions
Connected To Message ; Not Relavant
           Sender Service   : *
           Sender Interface : Test_OB
           Sender NameSpace   :urn:abc.com

           Reciver Service:*
           Receiver Interface : *
           Receiver Namespace:*
    Where did the error occur
        No restriction.
When i tested this alert rule, mails are getting triggered for Integration engine alerts. But when messages fails in adapter engine, i am not getting any alerts/mails at all. Why this happens?
    How should i debug this?

    Check this for troubleshooting: /people/michal.krawczyk2/blog/2005/09/09/xi-alerts--troubleshooting-guide
Also the alert should be raised in Adapter Engine for Test_OB as source interface.
Uncheck Suppress Multiple Alerts of This Rule checkbox.

  • Using Rules Engines, & Batch jobs

So, we're looking into the best method for storing our business rules. So far, we're investigating Rules Engines (Drools), using database Triggers, SOA, or coding those rules into the application itself.
Currently, the bulk of our business rules are in table triggers. So, when our batch jobs execute, they pick up all of the business rules as they go.
I like the concept of using a Rules Engine, though, especially if we could give some control over maintaining those rules to the customer.
So here's my question, if we went to a Rules Engine approach, or chose one of the non-Trigger approaches, would our batch jobs now have to plug into those rules that applied to that particular process? I'm worried about losing those automatic business rule checks when the trigger executes for any interaction with the underlying table data. With a rules engine, it would seem, you'd have more planning b/c the batch job now has to call all rules that may apply.
Am I missing the point of a Rules Engine, or is this the case?
    --=Chuck

    1) Oracle 10g includes a rules engine, so if you're going do that path, I'd consider strongly keeping everything in Oracle.
    2) What is the nature of the business rules? Are these validations? Calculations? Something else?
    3) Depending on the rules, and whether your batch process has to do anything to react to a rule (i.e. if you have a validation rule that indicates the batch job inserted an invalid entry, does the job need to do something? Or could a subsequent query alert the user to the problem), you can generally have the rules engine run all the rules at the end of the load (that's generally 1 command from the batch process to the rules engine). Or you could have the rules engine run everything periodically. With the internal Oracle rules engine, I believe you can also have things evaluate synchronously.

  • BAM getting random timeouts calling BPEL web service as alert rule

I have a BAM alert rule set up to call a BPEL process (web service call basically). This is part of our custom error notification and escalation solution.
In production I randomly see timeouts in the BAM event engine logs where the web service call has timed out. On the BPEL side these processes never show as being invoked, nor are they in manual recovery.
This only happens at random times, although usually in "clumps" lasting a few minutes. The rest of the time this has been fairly reliable.
Any help from the BAM experts would be appreciated. I would open an SR on this, but I have found support to literally take days/weeks to get back to me on BAM issues -- and this particular issue does not seem to be reliably reproduceable.
Here is the event engine log message:

  • Alert Rule Configuration in SAP PI 7.3

    Hello,
I am using PI 7.3. It's java stack only. I am using component based alert configuration.
AlertConsumerJob is running. But for a particular scenario, no alert is generated, although the message status is "System error". We are getting the below error for this scenario.
com.sap.engine.services.jndi.persistent.exceptions720.NameNotFoundException: Object not found in lookup of PI_Technical team.
This alert generation is working fine for others scenarios. Means, we are able to get alert mail for other scenarios.

  • Alert rule not working! Please help!

    Hi All,
I have a Async XI scenario IDOC ---> XI -
    > JMS
In order to receive alerts if JMS adapter or server is down, I have configured alert rule in runtime workbench. The associated alert category is setup correctly with fixed recipients.
Following are the settings in my alert rule.
       1. Conditions: Connected to message - Not Relevant
Sender component: I have given my IDOC source system.
Receiver component : I have given by JMS target system.
           Remaining all values: *
       2. Where did the error occur? : No Restriction
Now for testing purpose if I give a junk server name in JMS communication channel and send the IDOC from source system, then I found that the corresponding XI message is showing as successfully processed. AT the same time in communication channel monitoring in runtime workbench I get an error:
Error creating JMS connection. JMS provider gave error message as Failed to connect to the server
But I don't receive any alert. Why? Is there anything wrong with the alert rule?
Why is the message in XI showing successfully processed even though there is an error in adapter?
Is this the normal behavior of any Async communication?
Please help! I am struggling with this issue for a long time.
I will be grateful if somebody can help me.
    Thanks & Regards

    Dear Gopal,
you have a couple of questions...
    1. Even thought the receiver communica channel is in error , why is the moni showing successfully processed?
Ans...This is not an unusual behavior... what is happening is as your mapping is correct the message is passing through the IE properly but when the adapter engine ( JMS receiver channel ) tries to coomunicate with the receiver JMS system it is giving error ..as u have given some wrong server details
    2. Alert e-mail not received
chk whether the alert catergory u created is attached to your alert rule..
you can do this in the alert configuration tab in the RWB
Also you need to activate your alert rule ..this again can be done in alert config tab..there is a chkbox of "rule activation".

  • Business rules engine faults..

Can someone please advise on what could cause this issue?
We are using SOA suite 11.1.1.2
    1. The rules engine takes an input as usual but doesn't send any output.
    2. The BPEL process that invokes the rules sends out a bpelFault instead - (because the rules engine doesn't send anything back)
    <bpelFault>
    <faultType>
    <message>0</message>
    </faultType>
    <selectionFailure>
    <part   name="summary" >
<summary>empty variable/expression result. The XPath variable or expression /ns1:callFunctionStatelessDecision/ns1:resultList/ns2:RulesResponse is empty at line 122. An attempt to read or copy data referenced or computed by the XPath expression either had invalid data, according to the XML schema, or did not contain certain optional data. Ensure that the variable or expression result named in the error message is not empty. Enable XML schema validation of related variables to ensure the run-time data is valid. </summary>
    </part>
    </selectionFailure>
</bpelFault> 3. At other times, the process works fine for the SAME input

    Hi Paul:
The short answer is yes.  But its not easy.
You will have to add some references to your orchestration:
    System.Transactions.DLL, System.Data.DLL, Microsoft.RuleEngine.DLL
Next the BRE will need a connection string to connect to your database.
Create a Variable in the orchestration ex:  SQLConn of type  System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection
Create a Variable in the orchestration ex: RulesConn of type Microsoft.RuleEngine.DataConnection
in an expression shape set the following :
    SQLConn = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection("Initial Catalog=Customer;Data Source=(local);Integrated Security=SSPI;");
    RulesConn = new Microsoft.RuleEngine.DataConnection ("database", "tablename", SQLConn);
then call the rules shape.... it should work.
there is a blog post about this I have used in the past:

  • Does sap xi has business rules engine?

    Dear experts,
i am dealing with microsoft biztalk server,i come across this business rules engine.this framework comprises policies, facts, vocabularies, and rules.
so does <b>sap xi </b>has this business rules engine??if yes plz eloborate?? if no whats the sap's alternate for this??
    thanks heaps in advance
    cheers
    kish

well alternative would to develop some web page or ABAP screen which you can fromulate rule and in background you can use R3 Custom tables or any database tables to store the rules...
while mapping you can do RFC lookup in case you have used R3 tables or database lookup to read the rule in case of other database....
look possible but we have yet started working on this approach..

  • Problem with Alert rules

    Hi All,
I created 6 alert rules in Alert configuration of RWB.
One of them is 'AE related alert'. For this, error occurance place is Adapter Engine and Adapter type is '*'. This is related to an alert caletory 'AE alerts'
Other 5 alerts are IE related alerts for which error occurance places are Adapter, Application, Server, Protocol & Server. All these are related to an alert category 'IE Alerts'.
For all the alert rules, Rule Active is Checked, Supress multiple alerts is not checked, connected to a message is YES, sender and receiver party/service/int/int namespace are all '*'.
Now, wheneveran error occurs, say for example mapping related error, i am getting 5 alerts from all the 5 IE related rules.
My expectation is, only one of the alerts should be sent. How can i achieve this?
    Many Thanks
    Chandra

    Hi Prakasu
In my scenario, i do not want to use 'supress multiple alerts'.
By doing this, i will supress alert from 2nd message, till the alert from the 1st message is confirmed(both messages belonging to same interface).
I want to supress multiple alerts for the same message.
As i said earlier, i have multiple alert rules for problems in different areas (proxy, mapping, server, ).
When there is a problem in mapping, all the 5 alerts belonging to different error categories are being sent.
I only want one alert to be sent.
    Many Thanks

  • What can be monitored using Alert rule via Runtime workbench? Help!

    Hi Experts,
In the alert configuration in XI runtime workbench, there is something called Alert Rule. Under Alert Rule there are options where we can give sender/receiver interfaces, channel, etc.
What exactly we can monitor using this option?
If my receiver is another SAP R/3 system then using this can I send alert when the SAP R/3 is down?
Similary if my sender is also SAP R/3 then can I monitor if this system is down?
What more can we monitor with this?
    Kindly help!
    Thanks
    Gopal

    Hi,
Alert rule is not at all used for monitoring directly. it can act as a filter for your alert category. so first you must have created an alert category.
you can specify the sender/receiver party, service, interface and namespace in a alert rule after choosing a alert category.
you can also specify where you are expecting an error like integration engine or adapter engine
if you define an alert category with an alert rule, no restrictions then you will get all alerts for all sort of errors from all of your interfaces.
so by specifying an alert rule you are restricting an alert category that you created to a particular sender service or namespce etc..
to get step by step idea of how to create alerts see the below blogs

  • Alert Rules vs Alert Category - Is there any limitations for multiple rules

I have an alert configuration implemented already and i want to add few more rules for the same alert category.  While creating the rules for new set of scenarios, I am able to create only one rule . Is there any limitations for having the rules per category ?

    Hi,
If the Suppress Multiple Alerts of This Rule checkbox is selected (default setting), then no further alerts are generated once the rule has been met until the first alert has been confirmed.
There is no limitation of creating alert rule for a particular alert category.
Check out the steps of Alert rule configuration.
    Creating Alert Rules
To create an alert rule in which you use a defined alert category, proceed as follows:
           1.      Give the rule a name (Description).
           2.      Select the alert category that you want to use by clicking the corresponding category in the alert category table.
           3.      If necessary, specify conditions for the sender or receiver, or both.
&#9675;       If your rule results in alerts that must be assigned to a specific message, select the option Yes for the Bound to Message condition.
&#9675;       If your rule results in alerts that are not assigned to a message, that is, they are caused by errors that occurred before the message was sent, select the option No for the Bound to Message condition.
In this case you cannot enter any further details about the sender or receiver.
&#9675;       If the rule is to cover both cases, select the Not Relevant option.
           4.      If required, restrict the errors further to:
&#9675;       Errors reported from the Integration Engine (with or without error category or error code)
&#9675;       Errors reported from the Adapter Engine (with or without adapter type)
You can enter an asterisk (*) in steps 3 and 4. You can enter just the asterisk, or enter it at the start, end, or start and end of a string.
           5.      To add the new rule to the list of alert rules, choose Add Rule.
If the Rule Activated check box is selected (default setting), the rule is automatically activated when you add it and is displayed as active.
If the Suppress Multiple Alerts of This Rule checkbox is selected (default setting), then no further alerts are generated once the rule has been met until the first alert has been confirmed.
Once you have created a rule, it is automatically displayed in the list of alert rules. If you want to display the conditions of a rule, select a rule in the list and choose Show Conditions.
    Hope this will help you.

  • Alert Rules - Some doubts

    Hello,
I have the following doubts about alert rules:
    1) Is there a way to create an alert rule that verifies the comparison between two formulas? For instance: send the alert if sum(field1) > sum(field2)?
I couldn't find a way to do that using line filter or group filter.
    2) Is it possible to create an alert rule that verifies data in two data objects? For instance: send the alert if dataobject1.field > dataobject2.field?
    Thanks in advance
    Edited by: user7565430 on 13/05/2010 06:54

    Hi,
    1) a) A Web Server understands and supports only HTTP protocol whereas an Application Server supports HTTP,TCP/IP and many more protocols.
    b) Web server mainly deals with sending HTML for display in a Web browser, an application server provides access to business logic for use by client application programs. The application program can use this logic just as it would call a method on an object.
    c) Webserver is used only for jsp and servlets and for static functionality it has limited functionality and it doesn't provide any security ,persistence and it doesn't support EJB and JMS and JAAS like other functionality
whereas Application server provide all functionalities.
In short, Applicaion Server is a super set of which Web Server is a sub set.
    2) Two-tier architecture is a client/server architecture , where a request to do some task is sent to the server and the server responds by performing the task.where as a three-tier or a multi tier architecture has client, server and database. Where the client request is sent to the server and the server in turn sends the request to the database. The database sends back the information/data required to the server which inturn sends it to the client.

  • Alert rule config

    Hi,
please help me out in defining the "alert rule"
i configured but no messages.kindly provide links
    srini

Alert Configuration:- You use alert configuration to have the system informed you about the errors that occurs during message processing.
*Used for alerts that occurs at IE.
Alert Management: When you define the integration process you can specify that if a particular situation occurs at runtime a alert has to be thrown using alert management.
*Used to handle business specific errors.
For example if the stock falls below certain level an alert has to be thorwn to the specified user using the integration process in this case you have to follow steps defined in alert management
    Defining Alert Categories
During alert category definition, you specify the alert text, expiry time, escalation, and all other conditions related to the sending of this kind of alert.
    1. Ensure that you are in change mode in the alert category definition environment (transaction ALRTCATDEF).
    2. Choose Create Alert Category.
    3. In the Alert Category column, enter a technical key. Choose a key that describes the situation that triggers the alert, such as CUSTCANC for a category responding to a customer cancellation. This key is language-independent and identifies the alert category. The standard namespace convention applies to the key, this means keys Z* und Y* belong to the customer name space.
    4. On the Properties tab page:
    a. In the Description field, enter a description for the alert category. Choose a description that is informative with respect to the content of the alert category. The description is language-dependent.
    b. If required, you can select a classification in the Classification field. If you do not choose a specific classification, the category is stored in the classification folder Unclassified. For more information on classifications, see Alert Classification.
    c. In the Max. No. of Dels field, specify a maximum number of times that an alert of this category is to be delivered if it is not confirmed. This refers to delivery using a communication channel other than to the recipient’s display program (UWL, application-specific program, or alert inbox).
    d. Select Dynamic Text if the texts of the alert category cannot be defined at this stage. This refers to situations in which the texts are not known until runtime, for example when CCMS Alerts are forwarded to ALM.
No translation can be performed for alerts with dynamic text. System messages can be entered manually in several languages.
    e. In the Expiry Time in Min. field, you can enter a life span for alerts of this category if the alerts will no longer be relevant after a specific period of time. If the expiry time elapses, the alert is removed from the alert inbox and is no longer delivered using any other channel.
Expiry times can be derived from various sources. Priority is given first to the data provided by the triggering application, second to the BAdI ALERT_EXP_DATE, and third to this field in the alert category definition. If none is found in any of these sources, the default expiry of 31.12.2099 applies.
    f. If you wish to specify an escalation recipient, select Escalation Active and enter the escalation recipient. Also specify a tolerance time in minutes. When escalation is active for an alert category, an alert is escalated if none of the alert recipients has confirmed the alert after this tolerance time. The escalation recipient is also informed that he or she has received the alert because of an escalation.
The escalation functionality is based on the administrator report RSALERTPROC. This report has to be scheduled as a regular job. For information on this report.
    5. On the Container tab page, define any variables that you may want to use in the short text or long text. You can also define other application-specific variables, such as company code or material number. These variables are then replaced at runtime with values from the application. For more information, .
    6. On the Short and Long Text tab page, enter texts for the alert category. You can include text variables referring to elements of the alert container or system symbols. In the case of a container element, the variable must be defined in the alert container. The entry in the text must be in the form &<ElementName>&.
The title is used as mail title, fax subject, and alert title in the inbox. The long text is used as mail/fax body and the long text view in the inbox. The short text is used for pager and SMS.
    7. On the Optional Subsequent Activities tab page, you can enter URLs for subsequent activities. If you trigger your alerts by calling a function module, you can also specify dynamic subsequent activities. For more information, see Triggering by Calling a Function Module Directly in Triggering Alerts.
    8. Save your entries.
You create an alert category to use in alert rules.
    Prerequisites
You have started the Runtime Workbench from the SAP Exchange Infrastructure start page and have selected the Alert Configuration tab page on the initial screen.
    Procedure
To create an alert category, proceed as follows:
    1. Choose Create Alert Category.
You can also create the alert category directly by calling transaction ALRTCATDEF. In both cases you require the authorizations of the role SAP_XI_ADMINISTRATOR.
    2. Enter the following values:
    The receiver of the alert
    The title of the alert
The text of the alert, including container variables that are automatically created and filled at runtime.
    The follow-up activity
Specify the URL of the required follow-up activity. At runtime, the link address of message monitoring is always entered as the standard follow-up activity.
    3. Once you have created a new alert category, choose Update Table to display the category in the alert category selection table
