Database is not started using spfile
Dear Friends ,
I got a strange problem . My databasae is not started using spfile default .
Sequences are as stated below :
1) SQL> startup pfile='/orafs/admin/MISLTEST/pfile/init.ora.082008214648';
ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 1207959552 bytes
Fixed Size 2020456 bytes
Variable Size 318770072 bytes
Database Buffers 872415232 bytes
Redo Buffers 14753792 bytes
Database mounted.
Database opened.
2) SQL> SELECT COUNT(*) FROM v$spparameter WHERE value IS NOT NULL;
COUNT(*)
0
That means , it is running using 'pfile' parameter
3) Now I create spfile following way :
SQL> create spfile='/orafs/app/oracle/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/spfileMISLTEST.ora' from pfile='/orafs/admin/MISLTEST/pfile/init.ora.082008214648';
4)
Now I just shutdown and open the database , Like :
SQL> shutdown immediate
Database closed.
Database dismounted.
ORACLE instance shut down.
SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 1207959552 bytes
Fixed Size 2020456 bytes
Variable Size 318770072 bytes
Database Buffers 872415232 bytes
Redo Buffers 14753792 bytes
Database mounted.
Database opened.
Now the problem is :
It is not strated using the spfile , And when I run the following command then it shows the database runs with the help of 'pfile' .
SQL> SELECT COUNT(*) FROM v$spparameter WHERE value IS NOT NULL;
COUNT(*)
0
Now I dont understand why the database is not running use the 'spfile' ? Can anybody plz help me regarding this issue ....
Hi,
In the platform-specific default location, Oracle locates your initialization parameter
file by examining filenames in the following order:
1. spfile$ORACLE_SID.ora
2. spfile.ora
3. init$ORACLE_SID.ora
You can direct Oracle to read initialization parameters from a traditional text
initialization parameter file, by using the PFILE clause of the STARTUP command.
For example:
STARTUP PFILE = /u01/oracle/dbs/init.ora
Further, you can use this PFILE clause to start an instance with a nondefault server
parameter file as follows:
1. Create a one line text initialization parameter file that contains only the SPFILE
parameter. The value of the parameter is the nondefault server parameter file
location.
For example, create a text initialization parameter file
/u01/oracle/dbs/spf_init.ora that contains only the following
parameter:
SPFILE = /u01/oracle/dbs/test_spfile.ora
2. Start up the instance pointing to this initialization parameter file.
STARTUP PFILE = /u01/oracle/dbs/spf_init.ora

Kumar

My database does not start automatically
i am using windows 2000 server and oracle 9.0.1, my database does not start automatically when i am booting the system.
in regedit autostart is there, my service is getting started automatically and i used startmode auto in my oradim command but still i have to manually log in to start the database, PLS help!!!
another issue is that i want to startup/shutdown the database using a user other than sysdba, pls tell which permission shud i grant as dba, connect, resource permissions are not doing the required jobspfile concept is introduced from Oracle 9i. You can call it system parameter file. Benefits of having spfile concept is that what ever changes u make to system through commands
alter system set ??? = ????
get automatically saved in the spfile???.ora which is managed by Oracle.
Main idea behind that as thought by Oracle is that previously u needed to change that parameter in init.ora file then start the database again after shutdown. Now u are doing everything online. spfile???.ora takes priority in the new Oracle concept.
If u delete spfile???.ora file, then it needs some specific init.ora which need to told to Oracle which can be through command like
startup pfile='complete patah .............'

Best Regards,
FanShow parameter pfile/spfile will not show you contents of pfile , for seeing contents you will have to show parameter with required parama name.
show parameter log_archive_dest
Whenever you start database ostartup first by default use spfile$Oracle_Sid.ora for starting the instance if this spfile does not exist then it goes for spfile.ora if spfile.ora also does not exist then it search init$Oracle_Sid.ora in default location.
As you created spfile after restarting the database will automatically use spfile and will show you spfile in yours param when you will show parameter spfile if it does not show then you are still using pfile

Multiple instances not starting using Windows services
Hi,
We have two Oracle instacnes installed in same oracle home. They are not starting using windows 2000 service manager.
I have to go to svrmgrl and set the ORACLE_SID environment variable to startup each instance. How can I make them start through windows Services instead of manually doing it.
Is installing multiple instances in same home a good idea?
These multiple instances are not part of paralell server.
Regards,
Wasim.Hi,
I have checked the registry keys and everything looks ok.
ORACLE_instance_AUTOSTART is true
ORACLE_instance_PFILE is correct
ORACLE_instance_SHUTDOWN is true
ORACLE_instance_SHUTDOWNTYPE is i
Above values are right for both instances. I even have recreated the services using ORADIM. I can start both instances by going to command prompt set ORACLE_SID and start the instance using SVRMGRL. But they'll not autostart when the machine is rebooted.
Regards,
Wasim. -

How to check if a database was not being used since past 90 days ?
Team ,
Thanks for your help in advance !
I'm looking out for some pointers to determine if a database was NOT BEING Used since last 90 days so that we can decommission them .
Rajkumar YeluguMy personal method which I apply after mailing to all users and managers and after using methods fellow answeres have given
Take database offline or in a single user mode and keep it like that for 15-20 days if someone is using it they would surely ping you or mail you. Please mail to all repective persons and app owners before taking it offline. As you said you want to decommission
it so i assume server will be less utilized itself.
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it

Database do not start due to error 445
Hi,
We have three databases on one HP-UX 11.31 server, the DB version is 10.2.0.4, we started facing slowness in all the databases, when I tried to connect to the server it was very slow, even the sqlplus was taking very long time, when checked the alert logs of all the databases, found the below error in each alert log file;
ksvcreate: Process(m000) creation failed
Sun Apr 10 12:56:56 2011
ksvcreate: Process(m000) creation failed
Sun Apr 10 12:59:00 2011The server resource utilization was fine with almost 15%CPU utilization, 55% Memory utilization.
I aborted the databases then tried to start them, the startup failed with the below error for all databases;
ORA-00445: background process "PMON" did not start after 120 seconds
The following is the alert log content for one database;

No changes on the server side, but recently we changed the Windows DNS servers and this unix machine is connected to the domain.
the resolv.conf file contents are
oracle:/etc$ more resolv.conf
domain mc.ed
nameserver 10.141.11.1
nameserver 10.141.11.2But, we have two new DNS servers with 10.141.11.3 and 10.141.11.4.
I think changing the old DNS IPs with the new DNS IPs will resolve the issue. -
CSS does not start using 11g RH4 SCSI drives
Hi All...
Followed all necessary procedures for setting up oracle. The problem is when I try and get ASM working, I get to the part that says CSS is not running and then do a $ORACLE_HOME/bin/localconfig add as root with all environmental variables set up properly. Furthermore, oracleasm was previously installed, properly configured because I can run the scan, query and list and it comes back correctly.
[root@db raw]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm scandisks

[root@db raw]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks

At the end of this process CSS fails to start. There is nothing placed into the /var/tmp/.oracle directory. I then ran the $ORACLE_HOME/bin/localconfig reset $ORACLE_HOME and get the same result.

DB is not starting with spfile .
Hi ,
i am running DB (10.2.0.4) DB on solaris.x64 platform.
When i started the database after install , its giving error as
SQL> startup
ORA-00064: object is too large to allocate on this O/S (1,3994560)
I checked the sga_target size in spfile , which is set to (729145600 bytes ~ 595 M)
When installed another DB with sga_target size as 412 M
and started the DB it gives follwing error .
SQL> startup
SQL> ORA-00821: Specified value of sga_target 412M is too small, needs to be at least 552M
if i start the same DB with pfile where sga_target has set to 1632 M , the DB is starting successfully.
My question is if it is starting with this higher value of sga_target in with pfile , why it is not starting with a lesser value.Cause: The specified value of sga_target is too small for the SGA to accommodate all of the necessary SGA components such as the log buffer, buffer pools, shared pool, etc.
Action: Set sga_target to the recommended value or reduce the values of any SGA component size parameters you have specified.
The previous solutions where correct, but if you're not providing a full path on the "CREATE SPFILE" make sure you have defined the parameter SPFILE. Otherwise you'll get the SPFILE created on $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfileDBNAME.ora

Edited by: Wander(Brazil) on Oct 15, 2010 6:46 AMHi,
You have to follow some order for starting services in RAC database.
Check the below steps can help you:
The ORDER IS AS FOLLOWS
For Starting things:
Step 1 Start Clusterware
Note
When any host in the cluster boots,Clusterware should be started.
The scripts listed below help make this happen:
/etc/inittab
/etc/rc5.d/S96init.crs
/etc/init.d/init.crs
/etc/init.d/init.crsd
/etc/init.d/init.cssd
/etc/init.d/init.evmd
Be aware of this for 2 reasons:
1. It may be unneccesary for you to start Clusterware. It might already be started.
2. The script, /etc/init.d/init.crs, can be used to start Clusterware if you want to use it.
To start Clusterware manually, maybe use this script instead of init.crs:
To start Clusterware manually, maybe use this script instead of init.crs:
#!/bin/sh
# Run as root
# start
ssh dbcl1n1 /home/app/crs/bin/crsctl start crs
or
$ sudo /home/app/crs/bin/crsctl start crs
Step 2: Start nodeapps
After you start Clusterware, you may start nodeapps.
Use this script to start nodeapps:
#! /bin/sh
# start
srvctl start nodeapps -n dbcl1n1
Step 3:Start Database
After you start the nodeapps, you may start the Databases.
Use this script to start the databases:
#! /bin/sh
# ps
ssh dbcl1n1 ps -ef | grep dbw
# status
srvctl status database -d AUCD
# start
srvctl start database -d AUCD
Step 4:Start the application after starting the Database
Best regards,
Rafi.

ORA-01112: media recovery not started
I use AUTO option , but no benefit .
I have no cold or RMAN backup of my database , and also database is not in archive log mode .
In this moment , is there any solution to startup my database ?
waiting for ur kind reply ... ...Check the alert.log for this database. What were the last few entries ? We need to know which redo log was sequence #116. You would be able to use that for recovery.
We presume that there are NO filesystem corruption errors and NO missing datafiles / redologs. -
SOS! The database does not start and the license key can not be installed.
Hi,
I have installed the SAP Netweaver 200s testdrive on linux x86-64. I have got the hardware key and requested a license key. I have received an E-mail with the license key (N4S.txt) attached.
Unfortunately, I am not able to active the installation with this license.
I always get the error: "open of N4S.txt failed: No such file or directory"
I have renamed the license as N4S.rpm but it still not working.
Furthermore, I could not start the database in the previous step. I have got the error: Database failed to start.
Does anyone already have the same errors? Your help will be so greatful.
Thank you.
JodieHello,
yesterday, I have tried your propositions but nothing doesn´t change.
@Joe
"You might want to check installation log files.."
I do it but I did not see any error.
@Marcel
"Which Linux distro did you use?..."
I have the linux Opensuse 11.1
@Hannes
"you mentioned, that you are not able to start the database. Unfortunately, your error message
does not give us any details of what happened"
I follow the Installation´s help file of SAP, I didn´t have any error before this step of the Installation (Start the Database: entering the command startdb).
1) did the installation finish successfully?
Until the request of the License key, the installation goes without errors.
2) logon as n4sadm (su - n4sadm) and execute: startsap n4shost
What is the output?
"No start profiles found"
3) check /home/n4sadm/startdb.log (or any other start*log files there)
This is the content of the startdb.log file:

Giriuse "_allow_resetlogs_corruption" is a hidden parameter, and undocumented parameter.Since you are working in your PC so you can set it.
add this parameter in your pfile and startup db with pfile. Once your database is open remove this parameter from pfile .
set allowresetlogs_corruption=true
SQL> startup mount
SQL> alter database open resetlogs .
let me know ....
