Database layout with XML

I'm a java dev, not an oracle admin, so please be gentle!
I've mapped the physical structure of 10 types of devices to 10 XML schemas. These devices have a lot of common attributes (id, location, usage, etc) so I've kept these out of the schemas and, instead, wanted to store them in the DB relationally.
My first instinct was to create a table like:
id varchar2(20),
inventory_xml sys.xmltype
location varchar2(20)
usage varchar2(20)
If I wanted to use Oracle XML DB, though, the "inventory_xml" field does not contain the same type of XML element, because they can be any of 10 different devices, so I can't map the column to a schema. The solutions I came up with are:
1) Wrap the elements in a "device" element so that they are all the same element type. This seems like a hack, however, and goes against the spirit of XML DB.
2) Create a table for each device type, which includes the "id" as a foreign key and the xml data. Then, in the main table, replace the "inventory_xml sys.xmltype" column with "device_type_table varchar2(20)" which stored the name of the correct table.
I have no idea whether this is a good database practice or not, so any suggestions would be appreciated. The reason I want to use XML DB is that the extracts are super fast when you map the xml fields to schemas so queries would take milliseconds instead of 10's of seconds.

Hello,
I would like to refresh a region based on a database procedure (it generates html/xml/javascript with SVG).
The layout of the region is generated by the procedure. But when the data changes, the region layout has to change too.
That's why I have made a button with label 'Refresh Region'. I was hoping when a user clicks on it, the region is refreshed. But it does not work (via Dynamic action).
How do I make the region refresh (actually run the procedure again and show the result..).The built-in Refresh dynamic action can only refresh interactive reports, standard reports, charts, and list regions. My initial approach would therefore be to consider rewriting the procedure as a standard report. (I have rarely—if ever—seen a Dynamic PL/SQL region that isn't better implemented as a report with a custom template.)
The other obvious possibility would be to run the procedure as an on-demand process and display/refresh it using an AJAX/JavaScript DA.

  • Generating layout with xml

    Hi,
    I want to make a graphical user interface with xml.
    Is that possible?
    For example:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    <JMenubar>
    <JMenu name="Program">
    <JMenuItem name="Connect" method="Connect()" />
    </JMenu>
    </JMenubar>
    I automatically want to create these menu.
    But this xml could be more extended, and then the layout must also made automatically.
    The problem is, that you don't know how many JMenu's en JMenuItems there are.
    Anyone has an idea how to work with this?

    One way to do this is just to use XMLEncode & XMLDecode, so a nice example for you, to run this, first
    java Test -c test.xml
    It will ask some questions, fill 'em in.
    then
    java Test -l test.xml
    and it'll create a frame based on the XML file created by step one.
    import java.beans.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.io.*;
    class Test {
        public static void main(String argv[] ) throws Throwable{
         String file = "default.xml";
         JFrame frame;
         if( argv.length > 1 && argv[1] != null ) {
             file = argv[1];
         if( argv[0] != null && argv[0].equals( "-l" ) ) {
                    XMLDecoder d = new XMLDecoder
                     ( new BufferedInputStream
                    ( new FileInputStream( file ) ) );
                 frame = ( JFrame ) d.readObject();
                 frame.pack();
                 frame.show();
                 return;
         if( argv[0] != null && argv[0].equals( "-c" ) ) {
             System.out.println( "Frames Title:" );
             BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader
                ( new InputStreamReader ( System.in ) );
             String title = in.readLine();
             frame = new JFrame( title );
             frame.setDefaultCloseOperation( frame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE );
             System.out.println( "utton or [L]abel" );
         String bOrl = in.readLine();
         System.out.println( "Objects Title: " );
         title = in.readLine();
         bOrl = bOrl.toUpperCase();
         JComponent obj;
         if( bOrl.startsWith( "B" ) ) {
              obj = new JButton( title );
         } else {
              obj = new JLabel( title );
         frame.getContentPane().add( obj );
         System.out.println( "Number Of Menus" );
         String noS = in.readLine();
         int no = Integer.parseInt( noS );
         JMenuBar bobTheMenu = new JMenuBar();
         JMenu menu = new JMenu( "File" );
         bobTheMenu.add( menu );
         frame.setJMenuBar( bobTheMenu );
         for(int counter = 0; counter < no; counter++ ) {
              System.out.println( "MenuItem " + counter + " title: " );
              title = in.readLine();
              menu.add( new JMenuItem( title ) );
         System.out.println( "Saving" );
         XMLEncoder e = new XMLEncoder
         ( new BufferedOutputStream
         ( new FileOutputStream( file )));
         e.writeObject( frame );
         e.close();

    The Oracle documentation has a good overview of the options available
    Generating XML Data from the Database
    Without knowing your version, I just picked 11.2, so you made need to look for that chapter in the documentation for your version to find applicable information.
    You can also find some information in XML DB FAQ

  • Dealing with XML  as  database

    Hello members,
    My requirement is to deaI with xml totally as a database instead of taking any data base(like oracle etc..).I.e i have to deal with all the operations like update,delete, insert etc to the xml file from my java application.So that my application willl idependent from database.
    I am not finding any information regarding doing update and delete operations from a java application to XML file(the information i am getting is only how to read and write into the XML file ) and i am not able implement all these stufs to my project.
    If any body have any idea help me so that i can move further.
    Thanks
    Mahi

    If you have decided to go ahead with using XML as a d/b then JAXB will be an ideal place to start, at some point you will need to convert XML to java objects and vice versa, then search for the appropriate node in the xml and do delete or update option.
    If you are still pondering over - to use or not to use XML I suggets you to use simple flat files (thats what I do in my project; and it does work fine)
    I store incomming & outgoing SMS in flatfiles (serialized objects). processes like insertion/deletion/update are all done by keeping the file pointer position in memory and I traverse to the exact location (using io.randomAccessFile) of the file and change the record.
    You may try a similar approch in using XML where you may allocate same size for each child node in the XML and mapping each child to a File pointer position in memory and traverse to the exact child to delete/update/insert, so when you make an update - you will actually be writing to a file pointer position in the file and the XML child node will be re-written-over by a new XML data (similar to update in a d/b); when you delete a XML chile node, traverse to that File pointer position and remove it in the file, but that file pointer position remains open/active; where you can write your next record...

  • Updating with XML datafiles from Database or Applications Server

    Our Environment: One database server running 10g with multiple application servers.
    My Question: Am I correct in saying that if you want to update a database with XML files using a bfilename and a directory object, that the physical data files must always reside on the Database server?
    Thanks and kind regards
    Adrian

    Thank you very much for the reply.
    Our systems all operate under Unix and I was wondering whether you or anyone else knows if anyone has successfully tried to use 'soft links' to span the file systems to other machines.
    There's obviously a performance downside, but what we are trying to accomplish is leaving all 'data files' on our individual application servers.
    Thanks again

  • Failed to Load database information - Crystal report with XML as datasource

    Hello Friends:
    I am getting the attached error when i try to load the Crystal Report with XML as data source.
    I have designed the crystal report with the sample XML provided with XSD schema (PFA I have attached the XML and XSD). It is working as expected on design time. But it is failing when I load it from C# code.
    Note: I have referred the following DLLs of version 13.0.2000.0 in my sample application.
    CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Design.dll
    CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.dll
    Please let me know what should be done in order to resolve this.
    Thank you!

    All I know is that you are using 'SAP Crystal Reports, Developer Version for Visual Studio .NET". No idea what service pack or what version of .NET...
    So. make sure you are on SP 9:
    SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio: Updates & Runtime Downloads
    Search for KBA 1525432 (search box is in top right corner) and follow the instructions there.
    Remove your reference to CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Design.dll
    Add the following references:
    CrystalDecisions.Shared
    CrystalDecisions.ReportSource
    CrystalDecisions.Web (if web app)
    CrystalDecisions.Windows (if win app)
    I'd also recommend commenting out the export code for now; one step at a time. Get it to work in the viewer, then move on... No Big Bangs

  • Problem with XML loading and xmlns

    I'm having a problem with loading an XML file that was created by Filemaker.  Filemaker will output an XML file using one of two different grammars.  One outputs in a mostly standard form that I can use with one glitch.  Flash CS4 AS3 seems to have a problem with the xmlns in one of the nodes.
    Specifically:
    <FMPDSORESULT xmlns="http://www.filemaker.com/fmpdsoresult">
    If I remove the xmlns="http://www.filemaker.com/fmpdsoresult" the file loads properly and I can access the various fields with no problem.  However, when I leave the xmlns=... in, it will trace out the XML properly but I can't access the fields using the code listed below.  This is driving me crazy!
    With the xmlns part in the XML file I get the following error when it tries to load the thumbnail files:
    TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
    I need to have it so that the user can enter/edit data and simply output the XML file from Filemaker and then Flash will load up the unaltered XML file and show the info requested by the user.  That is to say I could have the user open the XML file in a word processing application and have them delete the xmlns..., but that is rather cumbersome and not very user friendly.
    I've tried every xml.ignore function I could find but it doesn't help.  Hopefully someone out there can help
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    I was trying to use xml namespaces, so in my application I receive an XML file from the server. The file has a namespace, so when I parse the file I need to specify the namespace:

            <ls:projectV  id="" version="" creationdate="" modificationdate=""/ >

    </ls:projects>
    </ls:exchange>
    and the following code
    <mx:VBox label="WELCOME" verticalScrollPolicy="off" horizontalScrollPolicy="off">
          <mx:Tree id="tree" dataProvider="{srv.lastResult.project}" labelField="@name"  width="300" height="100%" itemOpen="itemOpenEvt(event);" />
    </mx:VBox>
    So i want to display the content of the xml (project nodes”) in a tree view, but i don’t know how to includes the namespace"ls:" in the data provider “srv.lastResult.project”. can u help me it’s urgent.

    Correct - this is for a standalone install of BI Publisher and not applicable to EBS.
    2. as default xml publisher is active in ebs and we can use this for our report, is it true?
    Yes - you can use BI Publisher to create reports out of EBS base tables. If you are wanting to create reports out of any custom tables or remote custom databases, pl contact your Oracle salesperson for licensing issues.
    3. i think xml publisher in EBS give us only xml file and we should use Xml Publisher Desktop to see our reports (With xml file source), is it true?
    BI Publisher Desktop is a development tool to design the layout of the reports. EBS includes seeded xml templates as well as design templates. When XML reports are run, these two templates are automatically used to produce the desired output.

  • How to display 2 layouts with 2 different Header and Footer in a template.

    Hi,
    I am using XML Publisher 5.5. I have created one template which is having two layouts. I am using <?Start: Body?> and <?end body?> for displaying Headers and footers. Now my problem is, I need to display first layout with it's associated Header and footer and then second layout with other header and footer. But the two layouts should come in single template file. How is it possible?. Is there any work around? Please help me as this is the urgent requirement to my client.
    Thanks.
    Siva.

    No problem. Select Insert -> Break from the menu bar. Then select a "Section Break" - Next page.
    Header 1
    <?start:body?>
    Page 1
    <?end: body?>
    Footer 1
    ==================Section Break (Next Page)=================
    Header 2
    <?start:body?>
    Page 2
    <?end: body?>
    Footer 2
    Worked like a charm.

  • Creating a template in Financials for using with XML Publisher..

    to whom..
    I hope someone can help please. I'm trying this process for the first time so please bear with me..
    Ive got everything in place for producing PDF reports via XML Publisher through ORACLE Financials but I'm stuck on the last
    part.
    According to the notes (Publishing Concurrent Requests with XML Publisher - An Oracle White Paper Jan 2005) I've come
    across, I need to update the concurrent program definition with a default template (when you submit a request, its in the
    'upon completion' last section where theres an option to change or enter a template layout) yet this section is GREYED OUT.
    Now according to my notes, to create a template you..
    "Setting a Default Template....to select a default template in the Update Concurrent Program page available from the System Administration
    responsibility (Note that this field is available only from System Administration. It is not available from the System
    Administrator Forms interface)......."
    My query is, where is this 'Update Concurrent Program page'..?
    Thanks In Advance..

    OK, so now I've found out how to 'default a template for EBS 11i' (System Administration > Concurrent > Programs - notice its Administration not Administrator)... but its unavailable.. in the the 'OnSite Setting' tab there was no box visible for me to enter a template filename. Does anybody know why this could be?
    thanks,

  • Configuring Mysql database in EJB  xml file for JBoss

    I am using Mysql as database , How to configure JBoss to use Mysql as the database when using ejb's( session beans)
    My ejb-jar.xml is as follows
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE ejb-jar PUBLIC '-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Enterprise JavaBeans 2.0//EN' 'http://java.sun.com/dtd/ejb-jar_2_0.dtd'>
    <ejb-jar>
         <description>no description</description>
         <display-name>LoginJAR</display-name>

         <session>
         <description>no description</description>
         <display-name>loginEJB</display-name>
         <ejb-name>loginEJB</ejb-name>
         <home>com.rfp.Session.loginHome</home>
         <remote>com.rfp.Session.loginObject</remote>
         <ejb-class>com.rfp.Session.loginEJB</ejb-class>
         <session-type>Stateless</session-type>
         <transaction-type>Container</transaction-type>
         <resource-ref>
              <res-ref-name>jdbc/rfptrack</res-ref-name>

              <trans-attribute>Required</trans-attribute>
         </container-transaction>
         </assembly-descriptor>
    </ejb-jar>
    1) My doubts are
    a). there is a username and password to access the database,
    I am mentioning only the database namein the xml file like-
    jdbc/rfptrack. So where should the username and password be
    mentioned or declared.
    b). The server showed the following error when it was started.
    Caused by: java.sql.SQLException: Table 'test.jms_messages' doesn't exist
    11:40:11,687 ERROR [MainDeployer] could not create deployment: file:/C:/jboss-3.2.3/server/default/deploy/Jlogs.ear

    deployer: org.jboss.deployment.EARDeployer@1e940b
    status: Deployment FAILED reason: Verification of Enterprise Beans failed, see above for error messages.
    state: FAILED
    the server is showing that table "test:" does not exist but I am using rfptrack as the database and not test. how can I configure the server for it.
    PLEASE GO THROUGH THE EJB-JAR.XML FILE AND THE SERVER ERRORS GIVEN ABOVE AND GIVE SUGGESTIONS TO RECTIFY MY ERRORS.

    Hi Svend,
    Please share the xml file.
    I am able to acheive the result by doing the above changes.
    Thanks,

  • What is the best way to create a database schema from XML

    What is the best way to create a database schema from XML?
    i have  a complex XML file that I want to create a database from and consistently import new XML files of the same schema type. Currently I have started off by mapping the XSD into Excel and using Mysql for Excel to push into MySQL.
    There must be a more .net microsoft solution for this but I cannot locate the topic and tools by searching. What are the best tools and way to manage this?
    Taking my C# further

    Hi Saythj,
    When mentioning "a database schema from XML", do you mean the
    XML Schema Collections? If that is what you mean, when trying to import XML files of the same schema type, you may take the below approach.
    Create an XML Schema Collection basing on your complex XML, you can find
    many generating tools online to do that.
    Create a Table with the above created schema typed XML column as below.
    CREATE TABLE youTable( Col1 int, Col2 xml (yourXMLSchemaCollection))
    Load your XML files and try to insert the xml content into the table above from C# or some other approaches. The XMLs that can't pass the validation fail inserting into that table.
    If you have any question, feel free to let me know.
