This post is now available at .. Redo log files in case of NOARCHIVELOG Mode.

Question is related with the oracle architure..
database requires a minimum of two redo log files to guarantee that one is always available for writing while the other is being archived, this sounds perfect when DB is running in ARCHIVELOG mode but at the same time it also forces database to have 2 redo log files even when the DB is running in NOARCHIVELOG mode?
    Any particular reason..
I would look for reasons not answers on what redo log is and what information it holds etc..

  • How to recover a PDB in noarchivelog mode?

    Hi all,
Urgent! We have a PDB currently in mount stage after restoring and recovering from backup. Whenever I tried to open it or recover data file, I keep getting this error message:

The CDB and PDB both are in noarchivelog modes.
Which command should I use to bring the database back?
    Thanks!!

Checkppoint being initiated when the redo log file is half filled
I mean, understand the logic, two is better, even best.. but still not getting convinced. I am just trying to think, can not Oracle work with 1 group with 1 big file..specailly when Noarch mode ? Having
Edited by: pgoel on Mar 12, 2011 7:27 PMNo, you still didn't understand and I am not sure how else we can say it. Okay, think about log groups as two buckets which are used to fill the redo content. The LGWR is filling one bucket at a time till it can't accept any more content. Once filled, rather than spilling the content out, it jumps over to the second bucket. Now, taking your statement of big sized redo, Pgoel, it doesn't matter how big sized bucket you bring in, eventually it will fill in. Its not possible that you wont be able to fill it , it just would take more longer than the normal timings. Thats all. So in any case , you need the second bucket. And I am not sure that why you are struck on the archivelog mode. I hope you do understand that its an optional mode. This means, this may or may not be there. If there, its a good thing that before doing the flush of the redo content, Oracle would be able to save the contents in the archived (think about the name, it's very meaning is to preserve, to archive) log file. If not, the redo content wuold be lost and there won't be any record of transactions leaving you to reenter the lost transactions. Its a meaningless point on which you are struck i.e. the archive or no-archivelog mode. Be it whatever, Oracle would still need minimum of the two log groups.

The answer is that you cannot directly take a datafile offline in noarchivelog mode. You must take the tablespace offline:

  • System datafile block corruption - no backups and database in NOARCHIVELOG mode

    Dear All,
Database version - oracle 11.1 Enterprise
    OS - RHELinux 5.8
What are the options of recovering from physical block corruption when there are no backup available to perform block media recovery?
V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION reports two segments corrupted (please see attached image for details).
    1 table in system datafile - sys_fba_barrierscn
    1 index - (applicaiton index)
    What are my options?
I know there is a possibility that the database will not restart after a shutdown due to corruption in system tablespace.
Database is in noarchivelog mode. So online backups are not possible and there aren't any full backups either.
    I am thinking of below,
    1. Run dbms_repair with fix_block_corruption. - Still database startup might fail?
    2. Shutdown the database and take offline full backup with RMAN MAXCorrupt option.
    Appreciate your suggestions and advises.
    Thanks
    Stefan

    Thanks Sybrand,
Agree with your first two suggestions .
Also scheduled a expdp job tonight. (Only backup like thing they had was a expdp cron, but until today all the large tables were failing due to small undo_retention).
Yes. Flashback is not used. So hopefully it will not affect the a database restart i guess?
    Related to dbms_repair, I was referring to - http://askdba.org/weblog/2010/08/physical-corruption-ora-1578-part-3/.
    Where DBMS_REPAIR.FIX_CORRUPT_BLOCKS and DBMS_REPAIR.SKIP_CORRUPT_BLOCKS used.
Which i think will not use any redo.
    Thanks

  • Recover database in NOarchivelog mode :)

Hi all. How to recover a database wich is in noarchivelog mode? B-)
    Suppose,
I have 3 redolog groups (with two members in each, the second members are located on another drive ). When first redo log group was 1/2 full I took a full backup. Then there were 2 switches from first to second and from second to third. Now the currnet redolog group - 3 (just started). At this point we faced media failer. How to roll forward changes using backup + online redologs?
Edited by: Junior Oracle DBA on Oct 16, 2008 1:53 PM

Restore your database cold backup (excluding redo logs).
    Then issue this command :
    RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE
provide the names of the last ACTIVE / CURRENT Redo Logs in the database when Oracle prompts for an ArchiveLog.
When Oracle has finished recovery to a consistent point in time, it will return to the command prompt without any error.
    Now issue this command :
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS
You would have a Complete Recovery.
This is provided that Oracle had NOT cycled through all the Online Redo Logs since the time when the Cold Backup was taken. (If Oracle had cycled through all the Online Redo Logs, it would have overwrriten the oldest log because it wasn't in ArchiveLog mode).

  • Recover a deleted record in NOARCHIVELOG mode?

    Hello,
I'm running 10gR2 in NOARCHIVELOG mode and we do not take backups (please, let's not get into a discussion about this!).
I need to know if there is any possible way to recover a record once it has been deleted and a COMMIT has been issued? A user inserted two records in the database that they should not have, and I need to verify there is no possible way to recover those once they have been deleted.
    Thank you,
    Mimi

    Mimi Miami wrote:
Ok so my UNDO_RETENTION parameter is set to 900...so 15 minutes after I delete the records they should not be querable using Flashback Query any longer, right? No,
UNDO_RETENTION is low threshold value of undo retention. Meaning, Oracle will try to keep at least that time before overwritten.
However, it's not gurranteed if not enough undo tablespace available, meaning it can be overwritten before the value is up if not enough undo tablespace to serve new transaction.
On the other-hand, it will not remove the undo record until it's overwritten, meaning the record could stay there for considerable amount of time if your database is not busy and undo tablespace is big.

Not sure what's the intention to make your delete irreversible,
you could actually create table newtable as select .. from old_table where <except the two records>.
Drop the old table and rename new table.
purge the recycle bin of your database

  • Back-up in noarchivelog mode

If running in NOARCHIVELOG mode, the script displays the following output:
Warning: Log archiving (ARCHIVELOG mode) is currently disabled. If
you restore the database from this backup, any transactions that take
place between this backup and the next backup will be lost. It is
recommended that you enable ARCHIVELOG mode before proceeding so
that all transactions can be recovered upon restore. See the section
'Enabling ARCHIVELOG Mode...' in the online help for instructions.
Backup with log archiving disabled will shut down and restart the
    database. Are you sure [Y/N]?
i was wondering why will it be lost when i am going to make a current backup? I will obviously stop all transactions isn't it?

Case of archive log mode online redo log files dumped into archives. So let suppose you have full backup at morning 6 am.
If your database crashes around 8 am, you can restore 6 am backup and you option of recovery until 8am. So there is no data loss until you have archives.
Now we talk of noarchivelog mode, here online redo log files are not dumped because of noarchivelog mode of database.
You have backup at 6 am
Now the time is 8 am , your database crashed. Now you have to restore 6 am backup. Later there is no concept of recovery. It's just restore. Because you don't have archives to perform recovery.
So again archivelog mode depends on your business requirements.
Overall you have two hours of data loss in noarchivelog mode.
    HTH.

    Hi All,
    Need help from the gurus.
Currently we are in state unable to do anything.
Was using a database and all of a sudden it crashed. Tried to mount the database, open it, it failed. Also tried the recover and alter database open, even that failed. Errors are as follows.

Please let me know how I should go about it. I am only a timebeing person trying to carryout a db activity. Any help would be of great help.

    Hemant,
    thanks for the reply.
I tried the way you suggested and it threw an error.
ORA-01145: offline immediate disallowed unless media recovery enabled
I searched and found that an additional tag of drop needs to be added to the command which you suggested.
ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE '<filename>' OFFLINE DROP.
i don't know what will the drop command have an effect ?
i have copied the data file to another location. Since i don't know much, i just want to be sure of what im doing.
if the above command is successfull, will it drop the datafile or the tablespace and i can no more use it. How can i use the copied datafile.

  • Restoring backup taken in NOARCHIVELOG mode

Hi I have a test database in noarchivelog mode. The backup I am implementing involves:
Shutting down the database in immedtiate mode. Taking a complete backup of the
    a) Datafiles
    b) Controlfiles
    c) Redo log files
    d) Parameter file
    e) Password file
Now, when I want to restore in case of any media failure, I will copy all the above file to their respective locations.
Here my question is that, do I require to open the database after restoring all the datafiles, controlfile and redo files(in particular) in the RESETLOG mode or as I will be overwriting the current useless redo log files with the backup redo log files, I can just open the database normally?
What I am thinking is to open the database with alter database open
    Please comment with full explanation.

Your thinking is right :-) You have chosen the simplest but not necessarily most efficient or reliable backup method. You simply get the whole database back from backup, so there is no resetlogs necessary. But keep in mind that you lose all modifications since your backup.

since you don't have a backup, and you have a media failure, you cannot recover.
You can set the tablespace/datafile in question offline, and work with whatever is left in the remaining datafiles. (i.e. export/import elsewhere)
if the file is just corrupted, and not lost,
you may be able to get some of the data back using oracles data unloader, but that is going to be expensive (i.e. you would need to engage oracle consulting to do it for you)
i strongly recommend you get familiar with the rman tool next time around, this is quite capable of performing backup and recovery.

  • Recovery in noarchivelog mode

    Scenario :
    - Database is in noarchivelog mode.
    - There are two redo logs for a database.
    - A closed database backup was taken at log sequence 144.
    - While the database was at log sequence 145, data file 2 was lost.
how can i recover the database till log sequence 145.
Kindly help me in this regard.

    Hi,
    If Current log sequence 145
& If log sequence 144 not overwritten the time cold backup (all datafiles+controlfile+redo logfile ) was taken, then use following steps:
1> shutdown ( if database is open)
    2> restore only corrupted datafile
    3> startup mount
    4>recover database
    5> alter database open
