Dataguard concept question (data loss?)

Hi!
On the primary side I have:
- mirrored redo log files
- archiver creates a archiving file every 30 minutes for example
- archive file gets transfered to to standby system
On the standby side (physical or logical) gets updated when it receives an archive file.
Lets descuss following szenario:
What happens if my primary systems fails and the current redo file isn't archived yet? Do I have now a data loss or can I somehow recover my standby system with the mirrored redo log file of my primary system?
Thanks
Markus

If you are using one of the less protective DataGuard protection modes, yes, it is possible to have data loss. Since DataGuard is protecting you from disasters, the assumption is that if you lose the primary database server, you've lost all the online redo logs. So in your setup, you'd have 30 minutes of data at risk. If that is unacceptable, you can certainly use a different protection mode. In the maximum protection mode, redo is applied synchronously on the standby.

  • Question: Will non committed persistence data loss if my application which is using Kodo/JDO crashes???

    Hi,

all the persistence data that have not committed to database??If an app crashes, all current transactions will be aborted. There is a
difference between data loss and aborting the current transaction. Data
loss implies losing some persistent data -- data that resides in the
database. That won't happen with Kodo.
You will, however, lose any changes that have not been committed to the
database yet. This is a good thing. You absolutely DO NOT want an
unfinished transaction to be recorded, because that could violate the
integrity of your data. Consider a transaction that decrements from one
bank account and increments another to implement a funds transfer. You
certainly wouldn't want to record the decrement unless you are absolutely
sure the increment would be recorded too!

  • [DATA LOSS] I closed the Tab Groups and all my tabs dissapeared. How can I recover the tabs in Firefox 26? Would you please just delete this feature?

Thank-you in advance for reading all of this.
A slip of the mouse in trying to return to the left-most tab caused the tab groups feature to take over the window. I completely failed to comprehend what I was looking at and closed the thing by clicking the x because I damn sure didn't want what I was looking at. Undo close group? Of course not, I didn't want a group in the first place. Hey! My tabs are completely gone now! So in just a few steps all of which seemed innocent, I have lost all but ten of the tabs that were open, and those were only the most recent ten (and actually older tabs would have been more valueable than newer so insult on top of injury).
I don't think increasing the number of undoable tab closures is the answer. I think getting rid of the tab groups feature all together is the best way to go. I seem to have lost all the tabs I had open, irretrievably, and some of them had been open for WEEKS so they can't be reopened from history.
The tab groups feature is a data loss bug. Please remove it from the UX completely. If you have to figure out a way to grandfather people who actually have a tab group, fine but don't further vex me with it, please.
The reason this catastrophe has occurred is that your feature, was so discoverable that I activated it by mistake, and the UI after that had to be learned on the spot, yet was too complicated to learn. You really should withdraw it until you can figure out how to keep the UI for it from causing data loss such as I have experienced this morning.
Also, there may be other questions on this feature which are from a certain point of view the same as this one. It's hard for me to tell for sure. None of them had a true resolution so that's why I posted this one, also I'm seeking a specific fix, removal of the offending feature.
Why remove the feature? Because if I allow in my discussion the possibility of retaining it, it will stick around in its present and dangerous form until your team is done bikeshedding the new form it should take. Instead I want you to delete the feature and then require its champion to convince you that a new incarnation won't cause data loss before you allow it back in.
Fellow users, if you know of a way to recover all 50 lost tabs from an "undo close tab group incident", I would be grateful for that advice, but I would still believe the feature should be deleted. Some of the tabs have been retained for months so digging them out of the history is not practical.

I am not 100% certain but I am fairly sure development of this tab feature has ceased and it is likely to be deprecated. I am even less sure what the replacement will be.

I have not tried this and am not even using Windows at present but the tabs groups are stored as entries in the sessionstore.js files. Firefox has such a file plus sometimes numbered copies and a backup copy. Firefox will have re-writen these files but I suppose there is a posibility the Windows OS may have kept copies.

Find and backup any current sessionstore.js file. Consider also bookmark or otherwise recording anything you have open. Now find any previous versions and try putting them in Firefox's profile before restarting it.

  • Data loss Lacie 500GB external drive_ disk utility changed partition!

Details of problem. I have a 500GB Lacie mini hub HDD which is used with an iMac angle poise. Recently it has been playing up- unable to access folders/files etc. and since I know the PSU fails on these items (capacitors fail -5V and 12V go haywire- already fixed another one - I have a 320GB with a mac mini setup) I removed unit from the imac and connected in place of the 320GB lacie on the mac mini, using the known good PSU. The iMac is running latest 10.4 and mac mini is running latest snow leopard 10.6.1
The Lacie spun up and mounted OK and I was able to access all files folders with no issue, so since I was keen to make sure it was 'fixed' I ran disk utility. It ran and said it verified and then I realised I hadn't run repair so re-did this. Big mistake!
It did the same run and said no problems found, but it then said something like updating partition! Horrified I waited and it seemed to finish or had finished straight away. Not sure. I looked at folders and yes main 2 items in place, but nothing showing below this. ****. It got worse. I ejected and tried to reconnect and low and behold it says drive needs formatting now. Disk utility even shows this 500GB as having 2.2TB of space, which I see in other posts is another issue.
I have important data backed up elsewhere, but there are a large number of files I do not have copies of and suspect there is a way to recover these. I have since seen all the 'data loss' guest account issues and wonder if this is yet another bug in snow leopard.
Have tried running Techtool Pro 5.0.6 to see if it can see the data but its not seeing anything. Will try Diskwarrior and others, but may well shelve to see if apple gets an os update released for data loss issues.
Any thoughts on how to recover? Anyone with a similar issue? I am pretty certain this is not a failed hard drive as it sounds 100% normal. Thanks for any help or guidance.

Thanks for all the comments recieved. V.K. made me re-evaluate what I had proved or not. I was fairly certain (not 100%) that the drive mech was OK, because the psu had failed, but should have proved drive mech was actually OK. So I removed the mech (as USB abd firewire can't do SMART etc.) and hooked up to an old G4 Powermac. I then found that the SMART verified, but had forgotten the 128GB limitation on older macs. So removed and got a PC to hook it up and run latest IBM_Hitachi drive fitness and other diags. (its a Deskstar HD and I have had almost zero issue with these drives over the years.) It checks out fine, so I was correct in my initial thoughts, only the PSU was faulty.
So back to my initial suspicions that Snow Leopard or disk utility has screwed things up, maybe a bug, maybe not. And I did run verify first and it said it was OK, only when I re-ran the repair did it then do a "partition update" (or whatever it said - should have done a screen capture - searched apple but can't find listing of all mesgs avail. must be in developers site I expect). So I am back at looking at how to recover, if at all possible, but as Alsoft have said this is not something Diskwarrior can do directly. Files must still be there just partiton map is now in a ... needs to be initialised mode. Not that I will do that.
So I guess summary is possible bug/funny in 10.6 and/or disk utility.
sounds like I will be contacting Alsoft now
may read up on partition map damage first, so I get a better picture of whats involved.
Cheers and thanks for all the help/ideas.
BTW - been using macs_pcs for decades now and helping friends & family fix things as and when. This is first time needed to post on forum as always found answers to questions I had previously. Must remember the old adage of not jumping onto new technology until it has bedded down I bet if I had hooked up to the old G4 Powermac I wouldn't be in this position. Thanks again.

  • Dataguard Interview questions and most frequeently asked DG issues

    Hi Gurus,
I am new to this forum and happy to be a part of it.
Can someone help me in posting " Dataguard Interview questions and most frequeently asked DG issues" as i am preparing for the interviews.
And also share the enhancements to DG in 11g.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm not impressed by any of the questions at any of the linked sites provided so here are the one's I would expect someone to be able to answer:
    1. What is the difference between Physical and Logical Data Guard in terms of how they work and how they are used in the enterprise?
    2. What is the difference between vanilla Data Guard and Active and Snapshot?
    3. How do you enable the Data Guard Broker process and why and when would you want to?
    4. Who is Larry Carpenter and why should you care?
    5. What parameters in using orapwd are critical for success?
    6. What would you recommend as a value for SEND_BUF_SIZE and why?
    7. Given a primary production database, and a full RMAN backup that takes 1 hour to fully restore ... how long would it take you to implement Physical Data Guard from the time you started working?
If the answer to question 7 is greater than 2 hours ... my assumption would be that you probably had never done it before and it wouldn't matter that you got the first six questions correct.

  • When is the Next update of IOS..? ****** of with Data Loss issue

I am using Iphone 4 for past 2 years in India on Dococmo Network, since after the update of IOS 5 and 5.0.1 I
am FAcing the frequent Data loss in Mobile...!!
Time beign i can over come it by turing off the cellular connetion to on and off mode where it resetting the data connection...!!!

Since you haven't bothered to describe what this mysterious "data connection issue" is, we have no way to confirm or deny your statement that the problem is widespread.
The fact remains, you're using it on an unsupported carrier.
If you'd like to try and describe WHAT THE PROBLEM IS instead of getting defensive about it, we might be able to help. Otherwise, your initial question has been answered. No one here can tell you when the next update to iOS will be released.

  • Data Loss in DB to DB Transformation in ODI

    Hi,
I am facing data loss when I am trying a transformation for a DB to DB mapping in ODI.
I have two tables in two different schemas with the following specifications. In ODI designer model of i have put the type of place as number in target and place as varchar2 for source and accordingly done the mapping. It works successfully when i am putting the data as ('12', 'ani', '12000', '55').
Now for testing I am giving the datas as ('1', 'ani', '12000', '55') and ('2', 'priya', '15000', '65t') and when I am executing it is giving the error as expected(ORA-01722: invalid number) in the task (Insert flow into I$ table). My C$ table is populated with the datas from source. But E$,I$ and target tables are not populated with the data.
Now when I am puttting data in source as ('3', 'shubham', '12000', '56') and ('4', 'shan', '12000', '59') it is getting completed successfully , datas from C$ tables are deleted and data is inserted into the target table.
Now my question is where are the datas ('1', 'ani', '12000', '55') and ('2', 'priya', '15000', '65t') gone. If they are lost what is the recoverable table so that no data loss takes place.
The codes for source and target tables are as follows:
    source table code:
    CREATE TABLE "DEF"."SOURCE_TEST"
        "EMP_ID"   NUMBER(9,0),
        "EMP_NAME" VARCHAR2(20 BYTE),
        "SAL"      NUMBER(9,0),
        "PLACE"    VARCHAR2(10 BYTE),
        PRIMARY KEY ("EMP_ID") USING INDEX PCTFREE 10 INITRANS 2 MAXTRANS 255 STORAGE(INITIAL 65536 NEXT 1048576 MINEXTENTS 1 MAXEXTENTS 2147483645 PCTINCREASE 0 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1 BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT FLASH_CACHE DEFAULT CELL_FLASH_CACHE DEFAULT) TABLESPACE "USERS" ENABLE
    inserted data:
    INSERT INTO "DEF"."SOURCE_TEST" (EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, SAL, PLACE) VALUES ('1', 'ani', '12000', '55')
    INSERT INTO "DEF"."SOURCE_TEST" (EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, SAL, PLACE) VALUES ('2', 'priya', '15000', '65t')
    Target table code:
    CREATE TABLE "ABC"."TARGET_TEST"
        "EMP_ID"     NUMBER(9,0),
        "EMP_NAME"   VARCHAR2(20 BYTE),
        "YEARLY_SAL" NUMBER(9,0),
        "BONUS"      NUMBER(9,0),
        "PLACE"      NUMBER(9,0),
        PRIMARY KEY ("EMP_ID") USING INDEX PCTFREE 10 INITRANS 2 MAXTRANS 255 STORAGE(INITIAL 65536 NEXT 1048576 MINEXTENTS 1 MAXEXTENTS 2147483645 PCTINCREASE 0 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1 BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT FLASH_CACHE DEFAULT CELL_FLASH_CACHE DEFAULT) TABLESPACE "USERS" ENABLE
    Thanks.

So, first you have data in "DEF"."SOURCE_TEST".
You then run your interface, and the data is moved into "ABC"."TARGET_TEST" if the interface executes successfully with no errors.
    Correct? - no data loss
But if you're saying that you need to handle records which are going to cause the "invalid number" error, then you should read up on 'flow' and 'static' control and how to flag errors before loading them. Flow and Static Control allows ODI to identify erroneous records prior to loading - they'll be put in the E$ table for you to deal with later.
If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to take a look at the documentation on this:

  • Doubt in Dataguard concept

    Dear all,
Please help me regarding this i am very much confused.....
I had couple of doubts in dataguard concepts.
1)When archive log is transferred from primary to standby ,
a.Whether DBWR will be in active state or not in standby server. To write the contents in the archived redo log files which came from the primary to the datafiles of the standby server.
b.I am using online redo logs in the standby server not standby redo logs , whether online redologs in the standby server will have any effect in shipping of redologs from the primary database,
    c. In my standby database online redo logs state is changing between CLEARING AND CLEARING CURRENT.How standby server redologs will change it state,
    Regards,
    Vamsi.

    Hi again,
They are not used in a physical standby database. They exist in order to be used in a case of opening the standby database read-write (failover/snapshot standby). Here what documentation says:
    Online redo logs
Every instance of an Oracle primary database and logical standby database has an associated online redo log to protect the database in case of an instance failure. Physical standby databases do not have an associated online redo log, because physical standby databases are never opened for read/write I/O; changes are not made to the database and redo data is not generated.
Create an Online Redo Log on the Standby Database
Although this step is optional, Oracle recommends that an online redo log be created when a standby database is created. By following this best practice, a standby database will be ready to quickly transition to the primary database role.

  • What is summary level concept in data warehousing?

I am new to data warehousing.
can anybody explain about the summary level and higher level concepts in data warehousing?

    If I understood your question:
Data warehouses are intended for analytic processing (OLAP). Basically, It's based on queries that would take too long in OLTP (transactional processing). So you build a new Database, with a relatively denormalized model (you probably have heard about Star-Schema modeling, etc).
Look for Bill Inmon (Building the Data Warehouse) and Ralph Kimball (The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit : Expert Methods for Designing, Developing, and Deploying Data Warehouses) Data warehousing concept books. Mr. Inmon and Mr. Kiball pretty much "created" the Data Warehousing concept. You'll also find a Book from Oracle Press, named "Oracle XX Datawarehousing Guide" (XX = DB Release).
Also, you have plenty documentation about how to create a data warehouse in OTN. See thread below:
    OLAP and cubes tutorials
    Hope it's useful for you!

  • Data loss in Manage data in HFM 11.1.2. Advice needed

    Dear All,
Yesterday while using the Manage data function in HFM we encountered a large amount of data loss. Let me explain.
Our goal was to copy Non Financial accounts Entity Currency data from one budget scenario to another budget scenario. See the below screenshot. While this happened correctly an unintended consequence was that the financial accounts data got erased. So the budgeting team had to end up redoing their budgets again. My question is when we are telling the system to only copy the Non Financial data why would the system even touch the Financial data?? This does not seem right at all.
Later when I was doing testing I changed the above Replace to a Merge and then the system only changed the Non Financial data and kept the Financial data intact. If this is indeed how it works it is very confusing to say the least and does not make sense.
The point being that when we are specifying the account to be replaced or merged why does the system even touch the non-specified accounts? Is this a system bug or its just the way it works? Will appreciate an insight please.

    Hi there,
Then I will agree with Eric... and I have also just noticed that you have used the Replace option in your screen which definitely has cleared all the accounts before loading the new data.
For me the best approach is to use the clear functionality to delete any previous data from the Non-Fin accounts and then use the Copy functionality with Merge to copy the data.

  • Java Usage Concept Questions

I have a java Command line running program. Which allow input/edit data of clients and store them into a Flat file. The problem is that i have to make a GUI, ( a thin web based client ) and using only HTML and Javascript.
The next step is the db should be frontended by servlet or JSP that interact with thin client to perform the database retrievals.
    Now my concept Questions:
    1. Is it possible to communicate to a Java Program using HTML and Javascript? If so, any exampler, pointers?
    2. I was thinking of using HTML and Javascript to directly modify the Database. ( Since it is a flat file therefore nothing more than a txt file ) But isn't this side stepping the problem?
    3. If i could modify the Flat file using HTML and Javascript only. Why would i need JSP and Servlets? And if i could do it with JSP and Servlets only why would i need the think client ( HTML bit )?
If all of above 3 are correct ( conceptialy ), what is the orginal command line java program for?
The last question is why i think i have the concept wrong. Please i am new to web programming so feel free to point out any error.

    Hello,
You a little off on a few things. let me explain what each is used for to give you a better idea what each i used for.
HTML - Used to format data. Is static and can't do any File I/O and such
Javascript - Is usaually used for client side validation and some cool effects.
JSP - Is a scripting language that allows you to execute code on the server to create dynamic content and server side stuff like saving to a DB or a file
Servlets - Kinda like JSP but gives you more control over a few things. Usaually used for form processing and Servlet/Applet communication
for you application i would probably embed HTML/JavaScript for layout and validation into a JSP page for your display pages.. then build JSP pages to handle all you business logic and processing.

  • Can I just close disk utility without risking data loss or drive problems?

I am using disk utility's restore to clone a hard drive to an external drive but it is taking forever (telling me 3 days)  and the cancel button won't work. Can I just close disk utility without risking data loss or drive problems? Force quit? Anyone have experience with this?
    - George

I spoke with a tech advisor through applecare. Theoretically the source drive should not be damaged if you quit the disk utility application while cloning your drive. More obviously, the destination volume will be unreadable and require a re-format, but in general no major damage will occur. I have quit the disk utility and restrarted, the source drive works as expected, while the desitination shows, "unreadable"
Hope this helps anyone else with a similar question.

  • Schematool, db changes, data loss?

    Question 1
What types of changes to the classes (and to the database using schematool)
could result in data in existing tables being lost?
    Question 2
I know from db days that certain db changes result in the tables being
wiped. Will schematool warn of potential dataloss before it changes the
    database tables?
    Question 3
Is there anyway of handling changes that would cause a data loss manually?
    Thanks.

What types of changes to the classes (and to the database using schematool)
could result in data in existing tables being lost?If you use the "add" action on the schema tool (rather than "refresh" or
"drop"), it will never drop any data. Otherwise, deleting or renaming a
class field and then running "refresh" or "drop" on the schema tool will cause
the old column for the field to be dropped (you could prevent this in the
case of renaming the field by adding metadata extensions to map the field to
the old column... or if you're already using extensions for mapping then it's
not a concern). There are other obvious cases too (running "drop" on a class).
Bottom line is to use the "add" action if you're worried about the tool
    dropping anything.
I know from db days that certain db changes result in the tables being
wiped. Will schematool warn of potential dataloss before it changes the
database tables? The tool does not perform any changes that result in clearing tables. It
limits itself to creating tables, adding columns, removing columns.

  • How do I avoid data loss during setup?

    Hi All,
Update: below is my original question/concern. But since posting, I've come across others posting about data loss at various stages of install and initial setup and syncing. None of those posts have been replied to, and I think many of us need some answers. So after reading one guys calendar got scrubbed, I checked mine and the same thing... I had synced through iTunes before upgrading, and all my freshly updated calendar events had been erased when I enabled iCloud. Honestly, what is it with Apple's obsession with deleting people's data when adding new equipment or services?
So add to my question below, a how to for getting data from existing devices to cloud w/o having cloud erase files and data from devices...
I'm just setting up. I want to go into this cloud thing slowly, starting with just calendar syncing.
I go to settings: Documents and Data and click it off. I get a pop up witch says "All documens and Data stored in iCloud will be deleted from this iPad"
    What?
This switch was in the on position upon install. Have my Documents and data already been scarfed to the cloud, where now if I turn off the feature I lose my files?
And what about down the road if one wants to turn off the feature after it's been in use? Doe my iPad get scrubbed of my files?
Am I learning that once my files get sent to the cloud, the server holds a copy which I can never scrub off iCloud?
The way that warning reads, my only option for taking a device off the grid is to have my data scrubbed from that device.
What am I missing? I want to control which of my data makes it to the cloud. This says they take it all up front and steal my copy if I try to get my device off the grid. No?
Please help me understand how to control which of my files go to the cloud, and how not to have my files removed from my device if I chose to opt out of the docs and data sync feature?
    S.
PS why would they ever make that a consequence of turning off the feature?

Unless you have signed up for AT&T's international roaming for phone calls, I suggest putting the device into Airplane mode. That is what I did when I did the 3 day Bahamas Cruise. And to support what AmishCake said, the cruise lines charge for their wi-fi. Generally a daily 24-hour charge, or they will have a special for the length of the cruise, but it is pricey.

  • Beware of iTunes' Reorganize Library feature - DATA LOSS!

Once again I had to report an INFURIATING DATA LOSS BUG in iTunes to Apple.
I have a large library of music, movies and TV shows-- all painstakingly purchased, ripped and imported onto a 2 TB external Lacie NAS. Everything works fine-- UNTIL I dare to use iTunes' Library -> Reorganize Files feature in an attempt to clean up iTune's inability to keep an external drive properly organized as media is added.
This time, iTunes saw fit to DELETE all of the .m4v files from THREE ENTIRE TV SERIES. With NO WARNING OR ERROR. The files are simply gone off my NAS. These will take weeks to replace!
I reported this bug back in iTunes 10.4 and it STILL EXISTS in iTunes 10.5b48. So beware of using this feature, even in the upcoming version of iTunes.
iTunes should NEVER delete your files without warning no matter what! Not under ANY circumstances!

Since this is an iTunes question, it might be better to post in the iTunes for Windows forum.
