DB backup is hung

What are the different ways to know if DB backup & archive log backup process have hung. How can we know the average run time of db backup & archive log backup ?
What are the advisable checks to be performed / steps to be taken if we observe the backup is slow (determined by average) or has hung.

Hi Jayesh,
These are depends upon which hardware you are using for backup and which backup tools you are using.
And depends upon your database size.
Anyways you can check the same with last successfull backup, how much time it is taking for full backup.
And you can check the estimated end time when you are scheduling the same at OS level.

It is in this situation since 4 Hrs.
I had set all the permissions as mentioned in the SAP Note : 113747.  Backup was happening as normal till 25th June thru DB13.
My observation is, I had alter the  oracle parameter as per the  quiry results.  ( i.e added the events ..  I  had executed the script attached  in the S.Note : 1171650.  ST04 --> Performance --> Additional Function --> SQL Command Editor )
    O/S :  AIX 5.3,
    DB : Oracle  10.2.0.2.0
    ECC 6.0
Backup in all other servers are happening without any problem..
    I appreciate  your  expert suggestions.
    Thanks!

  • After backup, computer hung - conflicting backup info

Just bought the time capsule/time machine disk on Saturday. Mac pro desktop, connected via internet. Backed it up Tues night. After the first backup (I left it overnight), the "busy basketball" was visible, wold not go away, and my machine would not respond to anything (not even cmd-opt-esc). According to the time machine preferences screen, which was still up, the backup was complete. The screen said it was backing up the 275 GB.
So I restarted the computer manually (pushed the button, shut it off, pushed the button to restart.). About 275 GB and 800,000 files were supposed to be backed up. According to time machine buddy, the last message indicated that it copied only 68 GB and 253 files, and indicated that "status of backup unknown". If I go "into" the time machine, the finder showing the backup db file indicates that 275 GB of space has been used in the backup disk. Perhaps this space has only been reserved but not actually used?
This is obviously an amateur product. How can I tell what's actually been backed up? I have a really bad feeling about this.

Were you doing the initial backup via Ethernet? That's highly recommended.
According to the time machine preferences screen, which was still up, the backup was complete.
Do you mean it showed the appropriate timestamp in *Latest Backup?*
What does it show now? If there's a timestamp there, look at your backup via Time Machine. Click the Time Machine icon in your Dock, or select +Enter Time Machine+ from the TM icon in your menubar.

That's likely because of the forced power-off; the later messages didn't get moved into the log files on disk.
If I go "into" the time machine, the finder showing the backup db file indicates that 275 GB of space has been used in the backup disk. Perhaps this space has only been reserved but not actually used?
If there's no *Latest Backup* date on the Preferences window, the backup failed; the 275 GB is in an ".inProgress" package, not in the forum of a completed backup.
Without the logs, there's probably no way to tell why it failed. If the Prefs window says Failed, see #C2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
This is obviously an amateur product.
No, an amateur user. The documentation leaves a lot to be desired, but it works fine for millions of folks.
How can I tell what's actually been backed up? I have a really bad feeling about this.
If the backup didn't complete, and there's no message on the Preferences window, connect via Ethernet if you haven't already. Start a new backup (select +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your menubar, or by right-clicking the TM icon in your Dock).
Time Machine will "recover" the failed backup. That will probably take a long time, even via Ethernet.
If it fails, note the message it sends, and see #C2 in Troubleshooting.
If it seems to hang, for a long time, and won't cancel, see #D6 there.
While it's running, you might want to review the [Time Machine Tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics] and perhaps browse [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Need to restore TM backup to 2nd HD w/o install disks (1 mac)

    hi all,
i've run into a quandry. my powermac g5 primary drive (OSX10-5) is throwing i/o errors. i have a recent TM backup, and would like to restore it to my secondary drive (MacOS), and reboot from that drive. then i can work on the primary drive. the panther install on MacOS no longer boots, so i want get 10.5 on that drive.
my dvr-116d cannot read my leopard install disk (nor any other disk). i have a WD mybook -- it's my TM drive. (how about that for irony?) i followed the thread on the WD and DVR mis-interaction, but none of the suggested fixes have worked (no WD plist file to delete, have updated drivers and firmware, rebooted without drive, etc). thus, i can't restart from the leopard install disk. my other systems are all snow leopard, which won't run on the g5, so that rules out the 2nd mac method.
i have made few attempts without success. first, using disk utility (DU), i tried to create an image from the TM OSX10-5 backup. it hung after 30 hours of "creating disk image..." second, i tried using TM restore to different target to put the files on MacOS, and ended up with /Volumes/MacOS/OSX10-5. using DU again, i turned that into a disk image, reformatted MacOS, and restored from that disk image. the result won't boot properly (system tries to booth, then powers off in about 15 seconds). on reflection, the FAQ did say "to restore a data-only volume to an alternate location", so i shouldn't have expected it to work. i'm currently looking into migration assistant...
the primary disk is on borrowed time, so i'd be grateful for any/all ideas/help. (too bad i can't just dd the backup onto a reformatted volume like the old days.)
    many thanks,
    bert

Another alternative for booting the Leopard install disc would be to "borrow" the DVD drive from one of your newer computers via FireWire Target Disk mode. You would need an appropriate Firewire cable that could connect the two computers.
In this situation you can't set up FireWire Target Disk mode with the Intel as the host computer, but you should still be able to use TDM "the other way", using the computer with the functioning DVD drive as the TDM target and and running the Leopard DVD from the G5 as host. The newer Intel Mac is used only for its DVD drive, and is otherwise totally passive.
To try this, you could do the following:
Shut down the G5. Insert the Leopard DVD into the other computer, and restart the other computer while holding down the T key, booting the other computer into FireWire Target Disk Mode . Connect it to the G5 with the FW cable, and then start the G5 while holding down the Option key. This should boot the G5 into the startup manager, and hopefully you will see the Leopard OS X install DVD as one of the startup choices. Select that, and try to boot from it.

  • Unable to complete Time Machine backup to Iomega 1TB external drive

I've read through all the posted topics related to Time Machine failing. I've run Disk Utility without errors; ensured that the external drive is formatted correctly GUID; 1 partition; Mac OS Extended (Journaled); downloaded TimeMachineBuddy; and still cannot get my new Iomega 1TB hard drive to complete a backup. My prior external drive, a LaCie, had no such difficulties but is now full.
Here is the TimeMachineBuddy error report. I am hoping one of you can help me understand what my next steps should be and thank you, in advance:

    Thanks, Pondini.
I attached a new drive last night. Time Machine prompted me that it needed reformatting, which it did internally, without going to Disk Utility. It then started a backup but hung on "cleaning up" where I found it this morning.
Again, the finder was taken out with the TM hang and I had to hard reboot (on/off button - restart doesn't work nor does force quitting finder).
Here is the sad log from last night's attempt. Since it mentions an entirely new set of failures I am now ready to point to my computer as the faulty party. $180 worth of external drives into this, I am reticent about sinking anymore money into this until I rule out the computer itself. This line "NSFileHandleOperationException:* -[NSConcreteFileHandle writeData:]: Input/output error"
seems to be the essential problem.

  • Cannot do catalogue backup

    cannot do a catalogue backup

I have LR5 CC running on brand new MacBook Pro w 512 GB SSD.
I have a very large catalogue. (last saved was 5GB.
Very very slow backup as late as mid Nov.
At that time, when I attempt to do backup, encountered permissions issue on drive.
Switched drive, ran backup, it hung. Checked disk permissions. I have Read /Write privileges. Switched back to external drive being used. It worked.
Last night I let LR run backup overnight. Hung at 3/4 complete.
Tried running multiple times today after running Disk Utility / Repair Permissions. Turned off all apps. Checked Activity Monitor, turned off 3d party non essential utilities.
    Still hangs.

  • Lost the ability to Spotlight Index my Time Machine drive

I have an external, Firewire Time Machine drive which has been working without problems up to now. This evening I had a backup which hung up in the "preparing" stage (no file transfers begun yet). When I went to look in the console, there was a device error apparently related to trying to detect the powered-on state of my Time Machine drive. Apparently Time Machine did not handle this gracefully. In the course of trying to clear that I got into a state where I had to force shutdown of the system (holding the power button). (I accidentally clicked on the Time Machine icon which got hung up trying to display the histories, and left me with no access to the Desktop....)
Things appeared to check out fine when I brought the machine back up (including Verify Disk of both the main and Time Machine drives and Repair Permissions of the main drive), and I finally did a Back Up Now in Time Machine. Due to the forced shut down, this became a "Deep Traversal" "preparing"stage. We'll I've seen those before, so no worries. However it lasted quite a bit longer than it should, at which point I noticed that Spotlight was indexing the Time Machine drive.
So at this point I dragged the Time Machine into the Spotlight Privacy list. Rather than going away completely as I expected, the indexing of the Time Machine drive apparently went into some sort of clean-up phase that said it was still indexing for another 5 minutes (where it had, just prior, said it was going to be indexing for another 2 hours). The progress bar advanced normally as if it really did do 5 minutes more of indexing of the Time Machine drive. I've not seen this before
When that finished, the backup which had been "preparing" during all of this also finished "preparing", transferred the several MB of files I expected, and finished normally. There were no errors in the console related to any of this.
I rebooted, and once again did a pair of Disk Verifies and a Repair Permissions without problems. Opened up the console to track things, and poked around in the Time Machine. All was normal as far as I can tell. I also explored the Time Machine drive via the Finder. No problems.
So I now went into Spotlight Privacy and removed the Time Machine drive from the privacy list expecting it to do the re-indexing I had stopped above. Spotlight started indexing the drive and a couple seconds later it stopped. I tried again -- into and out of privacy -- same result, a couple seconds of indexing and then it stopped.
At this point I noticed the console was saying I had some bus errors in the I/O system, and that's what was terminating the md worker process and stopping the indexing.
So I shut down, unplugged the Time Machine drive, and went through my maintenance ritual.
I reset the PMU (this is a powerbook), reset PRAM, booted once in Safe Mode, booted normally, and ran Disk Utility again to Verify and Repair Permissions on the main hard drive. All of that went without a hitch. No failures, faults or funnies.
I ran through the list of Applications I use, keeping an eye on the console. Again no problems.
So I shut down, plugged the Time Machine drive back in and booted back up. I put the drive into Spotlight Privacy and turned off Time Machine backups. I then did a Verify Disk on that drive. No problems. I went into the Time Machine history display. No problems. And no problems looking at it in the Finder either. In particular, no bus errors or anything else funny in the console.
I rebooted and did a new Back Up Now. It completed without problems. It was another Deep Traversal backup due to the Safe Mode Boot, but it went without a hitch. I rebooted and did another Back Up Now and got a normal speed incremental backup again without a hitch. The bottom line is that as far as I can see that Time Machine drive is working just fine.
So I went into Spotlight Privacy and removed it from the list. Once again it started to index and stopped in a couple seconds. But this time there were NO Console error messages.
I moved my main hard drive into Spotlight Privacy and removed it and it re-indexed from scratch just fine. Tried again with the Time Machine drive -- indexing stopped in a couple of seconds with no message in the Console. Spotlight searches find all the right stuff in the main drive. Spotlight and finder searches find only the top level Time Machine folders in the Time Machine drive.
I also tried removing the Spotlight plist from my account's Library / Preferences. Spotlight created a new plist as expected but it still won't index that darned Time Machine drive.
Apparently there is something left over from when I originally aborted the Spotlight indexing of that drive which is causing Spotlight to think it has no work to do. I'm not seeing any I/O errors of any sort any more (I think my maintenance pass took care of that) and Time Machine backups and history access continue to work just fine. And again, the Time Machine disk Verifies just fine.
So I've run out of things to try.
Is there a hidden file that I need to remove from that drive so that Spotlight no longer thinks it already has it indexed?
    --Bob

    Well unfortunately the command
    sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/MyDiskName
    didn't help.
The command itself echoed the name of the volume and then said "Indexing Enabled", which looked good. But the Spotlight indexing stopped after a couple seconds. The Console reported the Terminal sudo command and nothing else.
I tried moving the Time Machine drive in and out of Spotlight privacy and once again the indexing started and stopped a couple seconds later with no Console messages.
I then tried another trick I've learned to make Spotlight indexing happen which is to do a Finder search for, say, all folders (limited to the one drive) via Command-f and while Including both System Files and files both Visible and Invisible. And indeed Spotlight indexing started but again stopped a few seconds later.
However, this time there were console messages and a crash report.
The Console shows (with personal information x'ed out):

Apparently the mdutil command didn't actually delete the Spotlight index file which is causing the problem, or at least didn't leave the indexing files in a consistent, empty state to start indexing over again. I may have to Erase this Time Machine disk and start over.
I should point out that except for Spotlight indexing this disk is otherwise working just fine. It passes Verify Disk with no errors and both new Time Machine backups and viewing and restoring via Time Machine and Finder work without problem.
Any suggestions before I just Erase the disk and start over with a new backup?

  • ITunes 10.5 on Windows 7 (32bit) doesn't display the iTunes store

    Hello there,
on my Windows 7 (32bit) system, already with iTunes 10.4 I encountered the problem that the iTunes store remained inaccessible - it simply wouldn't load/display. Problem was solved by removing all Apple software, cleaning up the registry, rebooting, reinstalling iTunes 10.4.1, and NOT installing Safari 5.x - because as soon as Safari got installed, the problem would reappear.
Now with iTunes 10.5, the problem is back. Only that this time it does not matter if Safari is installed or not - the store simply won't come up.
I've tried the whole support articles suggestions up and down - to no avail.
It's not a problem of firewall, antivirus, hosts file etc. - the diagnose function says clearly that even https is OK, all settings in the internet options are right, etc. etc. - I've spent days on that, and believe me, I'm sure about it.
The diagnose function says, however, than QuickTime would not be available. No matter if QuickTime IS installed or not, before or after iTunes 10.5 that says it would neither contain nor need QuickTime anymore.
After cleaning out all Apple software and its traces, a reboot, and a reinstallation of iTunes 10.4.1, the store is accessible again - only that iTunes 10.4.1 can't use my iPhone with iOS 5 on it.
So I'm either stuck with an iTunes that CAN access the store, but can NOT sync my iPhone, or with one that CAN syn my iPhone, but can NOT access the store.
Besides, with iTunes 10.5, the separately installed iCloud control panel app simply won't come up - I can click until I get blue in the face...
Obviously, for iCloud control panel, although it is only listed as "recommended", it seems it's actually "required" to have Outlook 2007 or 2010 - and I have Outlook 2003 and do NOT intend to switch to a higher MS Office package.
I got an appointment at the Apple Store nearby now for Wednesday noon - to revert my iPhone to iOS 4. Then I could at least go on using the iPhone until again the first apps won't support iOS 4 any longer, as it happened shortly after the launch of iOS 4 when iOS 3.1.3 wasn't supported any longer.
Oh, I forgot to mention - during the update/upgrade to iTunes 10.5 / iOS 5, the sync destroyed my recent backup and hung - the only way out was to kill the backup process and continue, which resulted in a "new", blank phone. Lost some years' app data and a lot of important bookmarks that way.
Needless to say that the iPhone was my last Apple product ...

    Peter Hah
After spending another two days on pinning down the iTunes 10.5 blank store page problem, here's the solution to be found: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3372617?start=0&tstart=0
    Look out for "japiohelp".
    In short:
    a) press Windows key + "R", enter "cmd", and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (= runs as admin)
    b) enter "netsh winsock reset" and pres enter
    c) reboot the computer
    and Bob's your uncle.

  • System restore...I've got a bad feeling about this...

I've downloaded 10.7.2 on my three Macs, an MB Air and a Mac Pro both at home and in the office.  The office Pro has seen some significant issues since the update.  After the update, my iPhoto was broken--it would not import photos either directly from my camera or image files on my hard drive without crashing.  I put iPhoto to the trash and and reinstalled over it but it still wouldn't work.  So I went to the app store and bought a new copy (I had a project due that needed iPhoto) and that didn't fix the problem.  This morning when I came in my time machine backup had hung and in the Finder I could not see my harddrive.  I could see it in disk utility and did a repair but that didn't make it visible in the Finder.  So in desperation, I rebooted into the Lion reinstall and selected a full restore from backup.  Selected my back up external drive (Drobo) and it started but is taking forever.  When it first began is said it would take 99 hours...  It's been at it now for almost two hours and the time remaining is down to 45 hours, but it's only restored 4.1% of the files.  My hard drive is 2TB but it was a bit less than half full.
WTH?  My big fear is that it'll take two days and then tell me I'm screwed...
Surely a 48 hour restore can't be normal, can it?

  • 64GB+ RAM support: OS X v10.8.2 Supplemental Update 1.0

OS X v10.8.2 Supplemental Update 1.0, a minor software update bringing a handful of fixes to the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion.
The OS X v10.8.2 Supplemental Update is recommended for all users running OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 and includes the following fixes:
    - Resolves an issue that may cause certain Japanese characters to appear incorrectly in Mail
    - Allows Safari to access secure sites when parental controls are enabled
    - Addresses an issue that may prevent systems with more than 64 GB of RAM from starting up
    Not on http://support.apple.com/downloads/ yet.

The supplemental update did address the 'slow' Time Machine backups under 10.7.5 - if this is your first backup, and depending on how much data you are backing up, I would guess that it could take 6-9 hours, but certainly not 2 (or 99) days. If it seems that the backup is 'hung' just stop it, reformat the external drive, and try again. For some great Time Machine troubleshooting tips, see http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Reinstall and Install horrors

Earlier this month Time Machine crashed during a backup and hung the system. Then I could not reboot. I booted from TechTool 4 and attempted to repair the drive, but it couldn't be repaired. I booted from the Leopard DVD and ran Disk Utility and it too said the drive could not be repaired - it said there were keys out of order and the leaf count was wrong among a slew of other problems. Also, all backups except for the one done the night before were gone - 6 months worth. After much hand-wringing I performed a restore off the last remaining backup. It ran for 4 hours and finally restored.
All was fine for a few days and with backups working fine. Then another bad crash - just like the first. Tried to repair with DU and Techtool but no luck. So, I did another restore but that failed at 98% into the restore. Tried it again and got the same problem about 60% into the restore. I was using the latest backup (4 days after the first restore. Thinking that there was corruption in that restore I used the oldest BU - the one I used initially - but this also failed. Tried numerous times - it took days but each time failure, So, I then wiped the problem drive clean and attempted to reinstall 10.5 from the DVD. It got about 75% complete and failed - hung. I started all over again - erased the drive, zeroed it out and tried again - this time after about 20 minutes failed again saying that the "Installer could not validate the contents of the BaseSystem" Tried again - I did do the verification of the DVD first and BTW I have had Leopard (10.5.3) running on this machine for months with no problem. Each time I attempted an install I got the same message "Installer could not validate the contents of the BaseSystem", So, thinking it might be the hard drive I installed a new HD to no avail - same problem. I then took another copy of the Leopard install disk I have and had the same problem. So, I got a new optical drive and tried that and it failed the same way,
My G4 PPC MDD has 3 drives in it and I have another installation of 10.5.4 on one of the drives so I was resigned to having to pull all of my files and apps from the Time Machine backup onto this drive, but other problems started. All of the 3rd party apps would not launch - Photoshop, word, appleworks, etc. and I could not do a fresh install either - the installers will not launch. Console reported that the binary files could not be executed.
Looking through the various Console messages I noticed a hugh amount of info.plist errors among a slew of others and then this installation started to behave really weird. Sometimes starting up fine then hanging or crashing. Disk Utility or techtool were able to repair the volumes but then it would happen again. After days of this (lucky I have a few other Macs to use) and much checking of the various useful Apple help spots I decided that I would reinstall the 10.5.4 combo updater. No luck - it too hung just like others are describing in this thread. Further, I removed all 3rd party memory and a USB 2.0 card I had installed but this did nothing.
I am at my wits end - if I could either repair or reinstall 10.5.4 or do a clean install of Leopard on another drive I could get all back in order as no data has been lost. Any help would make my day. Also, would Disk warrior be a better choice to do these type of repairs?
    Thanks

I upgraded my copy of Disk Warrior and it indeed fixed a lot of problems. As far as I can determine there is RAM problem - a serious one.
When I initially ran the Apple Hardware Test it would not launch saying that there was an Invalid Memory Access. So, I removed the memory and added each of the 4 modules back in one by one. Only of module out of the four was okay enough for the hardware test app to launch. It tested fine. I then added the other modules back in one by one with the good module. One of them did allow the test to launch, but it failed with the extended test. The others, when installed with the good one prevented the test launch giving the Invalid Memory Access notification again.
Interestingly, the G4 will boot normally into 10.5.4 when all are installed, but flakiness does continue especially running Disk Warrior on corrupt drives.
Further all of the 4 modules have been in use from 4 years to 7 months and the machine has performed fine. I suspect that the problem is somehow related to the latency set on these various modules all from different vendors that is causing a sync problem once the memory is heavily stressed. The CL on the one good module is as follows: CL: 5, CL3: 6.0, CL2 7.5
I am a bit surprised that 3 modules would be bad. I guess I now have to go through the hassle of returning the defects as they all have lifetime warranties. Sigh.

  • V10.8.5 Supplemental Update 1.0 froze after reboot

While running OS X 10.8.5 I installed the "OS X v10.8.5 Supplemental Update 1.0" from the Software Update menu, and the initial install process succeeded, and then prompted me to restart the machine as expected.
I clicked restart and then during the start-up process, a dialog "Installing Software Update…" appeared, got to about 80% progress and then froze with "Less than a minute" to go:
I waited about 20 minutes for something to happen, but nothing moved at all.
So then I forced a restart by holding down the power button, and the machine rebooted and everything appeared normal.
But I was worried that the update had not installed correctly, so I downloaded the combo update for "OS X v10.8.5 Supplemental Update 1.0" from Apple and re-installed it. Again, the initial install process succeeded and prompted me to restart. However this time, no additional install dialog appeared during the startup process.
After the startup, things appeared normal, except there was no OS X menu bar at first - it wasn't until I clicked an app in the Dock that the OS X menu bar suddenly appeared (I don't know if that's significant or related).
I rebooted the machine once more, and everything seems completely normal now. Software Update is not prompting me to install the supplemental update again (says there's nothing to install).
Any idea what happened? What is the purpose of the "Installing Software Update" process that runs after startup? And what is the significance and likely impact of it freezing at 80% and not completing?

The supplemental update did address the 'slow' Time Machine backups under 10.7.5 - if this is your first backup, and depending on how much data you are backing up, I would guess that it could take 6-9 hours, but certainly not 2 (or 99) days. If it seems that the backup is 'hung' just stop it, reformat the external drive, and try again. For some great Time Machine troubleshooting tips, see http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html.
    Good luck,

  • Mac OS X v10.7.5 Supplemental Update 1.0

I installed Mac OS X v10.7.5 Supplemental Update 1.0 a few days ago, which said (amongst other things) that it was to improve TimeMachine Backup times... yet, previously it was estimated to complete in 2 days, yet since the install the estimate is now 99 days...
Not sure that it is a great improvement (although this is an initial sync)
