De-interlaced footage becomes jerky

Tried this question in the quicktime corner, to no avail, sorry for anybody reading it again,
I shoot with a Sony PD150; DV interlaced in PAL. Footage looks smooth but ragged, both in iMovie HD, FCP, QuickTime and when played back on a flatscreen from a DVD.
I tried de-interlacing with FCP (filter and export option) and with Visual Hub. The ragged edges are gone, but camera movements become very jerky. First thought the problem was in the DVD, but it's not. The Quicktime Film, played back on the mac, is jerky too.
Any suggestions to fix this?
Thanks,
KC

Glad to be able to offer a workable solution.
1/25 looks much better. I only used the shutter speed to control the light, when an ND filter wasn't enough and I didn't want to change the iris because of depth of field.
ah. Advanced photography requires advanced tools. You'll need a set of NDs or polariizers to control light that way. The 150 has such tiny sensors, though, you only get a decent depth of field effect at full telephoto and wide open.
Maybe you can help me out with three more questions:
about the PD150
1. In the manual set menu auto shutter is -- obviously -- set to 'off'. But is the 'prog. scan' option, in the same menu, any use in getting some sort of progressive footage
The manual for the 150 is available online at many sources if you've lost yours.
http://www.mediacollege.com/ (free download of the PDF)
I have never used the progressive shooting feature, I completely forgot it was there. Now I've got to experiment with it myself. However, shooting 25P is not the same as 50i, you will lose half of your temporal resolution. You want to be able to shoot 50P and then have the choice of converting it to interlaced.
2. do you know what the 'frame rec' option in the 'camers set' menu does?
Records only a single frame when the start button is pressed. Used for still frame animation projects. Not recommended, the transport does not like to do this. If you need still image recording, use a memory stick.
3. switching to HD. Any suggestions for an HD camera that's easier to operate than the PD150, has a flawless workflow with the Mac and XLR sound input?
Sorry, can't help you at all. We will not move to HD for at least two or three more years.
The 150/170 has far too few professional controls as it is now. Your desire for depth of field control suggests you need a professional grade camera but you want one with controls that are easily accessed and understood, not fewer of them.
The problem with the 150/170 is the necessary functions are hidden three or more menus deep. They are impossible to change quickly or inconvenient to check during real world photography so I tend to leave them alone.

  • Premiere Pro CS4.2.1 preview window has become jerky (more details)

I am using a PC, Quadcore (Athlon II X4) 64 bit Windows 7, 4 internal Hard drives (all single partitions, NTFS), 8GB RAM. I am using Production Premium CS4. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 4850 running the latest Catalyst drivers (or at least the ones from 3 days ago). I am using 2 TFT monitors, both running at a resolution of 1280x1024.
The hard drives are arranged as:
80GB windows drive (where CS4 is installed): 14GB free
500GB: Cache files stored here: 270GB free
2TB: raw footage for a new project: 844GB free
1.5TB: scratch files and all other project files stored on here: 204GB free
I put in a new Internal 2TB harddrive & installed a black magic plugin for some high def footage (the decklink software from www.blackmagic-design.com)
All preview playback in Premiere Pro has become jerky and unmanageable: only a few frames per second. Before installing the blackmagic plugin playback was smooth with all video sizes, now I can only achieve smooth playback with a tiny (~10% size) preview video.
I tried uninstalling the black magic plugin and changing catalyst control centre settings (regarding playback) neither of which worked. I tried to do a system restore on the windows drive, but this failed. I also tried disabling hard disk indexing for windows search in case this was having an effect, but it seems to have made no difference.
I have tried everything could find on message boards; old DV footage that was fine previously will no longer play smoothly it seems likely to me that this is a software configuration issue.
I have an ATI Radeon 5670 card which I'm going to try today. Other people have mentioned switching to nVidia cards, but I don't want to shell out for a new graphics card unless it is guaranteed to solve the problem once and for all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, if any more details would be useful then let me know and I'll post more information.

I've just removed a large number of temporary files, uninstalled a few unnecessary programs (e.g. nero) and have moved the swap space away from the OS drive to being spread over the other drives. I've disabled disk indexing, removed unnecessary windows services and run CCleaner. I also followed (most of) your guide on setting a system up for optimum performance.
I should note that Windows Media Player doesn't have a problem with playing large files, and so it appears the problem is localised to Adobe software.
The time taken to render DV footage has increased dramatically almost tenfold. This is something of a guess, but could Adobe be using the CPU to render video instead of the GPU?
This might not be relevant, but the timeline bar flickers when I'm previewing a video.
    Disk space is now:
    80GB:    43GB free
    500GB:   255GB free
    2TB:       696GB free
    1.5TB:    349GB free
I tried creating a project that didn't use the 1.5TB disk, but it exhibited the same problem.

  • Interlaced footage not rendering correctly

    Hi Everyone,
I have made a series of 10 second ads that all share the same graphical ending that contains a logo and text that flies in and then settles. The ending was generated purely in After Effects but is a little time consuming to render so I created a pre-rendered quicktime movie in pro-res 4444 as the ending needs an alpha channel. This pre-render was rendered as a pal interlaced upper field first clip, I have re-imported the render which is correctly interpreted as upper field first and replaced the source in my new comps. When I render out a new ad as interlaced the end frames after the logo has settled appear to have been rendered as interlaced interpreted footage in a progressive comp and give me jaggy edges instead of smooth aliased ones around the logo and text although the preceding motion seems smooth.
I have had to revert to the original un-rendered composition thus drastically increasing my render times but the output is correct.
To check wether this is a codec issue I re-rendered the ending to Animation codec but this produces the same results.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this ?
I am using After Effects CC 2014 on Mac OS X 10.9.4
    Cheers
    Nic

OK, I have partially solved this issue. I had forgotten that I had sped the duration of the ending up by 50% so as to fit correctly. When I use the original comp (sped up in the master comp) it renders correctly but when using the original length interlaced pre-rendered file (which is then sped up by 50% in the master comp) I get the error I described in the OP.
What this seems to mean is After Effects is only using a single field of each frame of an interlaced movie if you speed it up using AE's time stretch. Thus effectively halving the resolution of the frame and producing the jaggy effect visible on the curves of the text.
Is that how AE has always done this and is there a way around it with frame blending or such? Although I have rendered out a clip that was sped up before rendering that now works correctly when I re-import it I am concerned about using time stretch on other interlaced footage in the future.
    cheers

  • Can anyone explain why streaming video from BBC's iPlayer is becomes jerky on my Air?

I'm using my MacBook Air to watch streamed video from the BBC iPlayer and the picture becomes jerky after a couple of minutes, only clearing when I close the lid and let the system power down.  However it soon becomes jerky again after restarting.
The spec of the machine is 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 with 2GB RAM and about 20GB's free harddrive memory.
Adobe Air app installer also appears to keep attempting to boot.
This is pretty annoying, when during a 30minute programme I have to close the lid every 5-10 mins to make the programme watchable.
Any info would be greatly appreciated, a solution would be fantastic!
    Thanks,
    JJ

I'm not certan how to tell whether or not it is jailbroken but it's only when I use a specific charger and it's been fine ever since I threw that stupid thing away, No problems with the phone other then simple things I can handle. lol I seriously hope that madness never happens to anyone else!!!!

  • Interlaced footage in secondary preview - wrong field order.

I just got CS5 Production Premium and an EVGA GTX 465, which is basically a GTX470 with less CUDA cores (352 instead of 448). I added the card to the list in the Premiere CS5 txt file (the so called hack) and everything seems to work perfect except for one thing. When I play back interlaced footage that I shot with either of my two AVCHD cameras (Canon HF100 and Panasonic AG-HMC40), the footage in the TV set (which is setup as my second monitor) will play with the fields in the right order but after a few seconds it will start playing as if it were progressive, or as if the fields were in the wrong order. Then, eventually, it will go back to play the fields in the right order, and then the wrong order, and go back and forth like that. It switches every ten or twenty seconds. This happens both when the footage is played back in the source window and in the timeline.
Thanks to the GPU acceleration, it plays smoothly always even with added effects and even with different tracks at different opacity levels (I tried three tracks, one at 25%, another at 50% and the other at 100% and it played without skipping a frame), but I don't understand why it doesn't always send the right field order. I wonder if it has anything to do with the cable that goes to the TV set, since it's DVI on the end that I connect to the video card, and HDMI on the other end. Regardless of that, I purchased the cable from Monoprice and it's a very thick, well shielded cable. The card comes with a mini HDMI output, but the cable that comes with it is not long enough to reach the TV. Still, I'm not sure that it would make a difference.
Is this happening to any of you? Could this be a problem with the card itself, with my footage, or with Premiere?
Note: I had switched the "Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration" to "Compatibility mode" in the Nvidia control panel and it didn't make a difference in anything related to CS5, whether it's this particular problem or anything else.

We should probably just get the details, instead of speculation on what hardware is being used.
Oh, the system is pretty fast, but Premiere always took a huge toll when external preview was enabled, it was like that in CS3 and CS4 as well. But here are my system specs just in case:
    AMD 1090T @3.8 Ghz (stable)
    16 GB of DDR3 G.Skill RAM
    Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5
Western Digital 1.5 Gb Black Edition (as one of the video drives, the OS drive is a standard WD)
    EVGA GTX465 1 GB
So while this may not be the fastest computer in the world, it's more than fast enough for HD, with 6 cores and 16 GB of RAM.
This is something that's either wrong with Premiere's design, but maybe there's a workaround, which is what I'm trying to get to. I've been trying many things in the "Manage 3D" section of the Nvidia control panel, but nothing seems to work. VSync on or off, Triple Buffering, etc, etc, the problem is still there.
Obviously if I right click on the monitor window and instead of "Both Fields" I choose either first or second field, I get just that, but I don't see why do I have to edit interlaced video with just one field instead of both.

  • Footage is 'jerky'

    Hello,
I exported my film from encore and watched it to discover the footage appears 'jerky'. It isn't horrid, but noticeable to the trained eye. My test audience didn't seem to notice, but I can clearly tell. It looks like the footage is missing a few frames per second. I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure if it is the storage device (standard 4.7gb dvd), the burn speed, the footage, etc.
I am unable to successfully use Dynamic Link (long story short it causes a glitch for no darn reason).
    Details:
    I exported uncompressed from PP2.0
Imported into AE to add a 'film effect' (Film Magic Pro) and then exported uncompressed. I wasn't sure what format to use in AE for the output moduel so I used the default Video for Windows. I posted on the AE forum, but have not been able to determine if this was the proper format to export for intended DVD use.
Then imported into Encore, which demanded transcoding for 24 fps (23.### fps) footage. I then built the dvd for a test viewing and it turned out 'ridged/choppy'.
Any clues/suggestions guys? The footage was shot 24p using a DVX-100a
    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pans when capturing will be jerky.
How do the clips play in the canvas, viewer and QT Pro Player?
In addition, how about some specs for hardware, RAM, dedicated internal media drive for footage, FCP and OS versions?
You have a couple of configurations in your sig, and I trust you aren't playing the footage off the internal HD of either the MP or MPB and that you don't have the cam and external HDD playing off FW.

  • Slow-mo interlaced footage troubles

I use an HV30, which can shoot 60 FPS interlaced footage to tape. I want to play it back at half-speed with 30 FPS. When I tried putting it in half-speed, it just played back at 15 FPS, still interlaced. When I deinterlaced it, it still played back at 15 FPS. I guess when you deinterlace, it just cuts out all odd scan lines, instead of making separate frames for even and odd scan lines. Does anybody know how I can make separate frames with the even and odd scan lines so that my 60 FPS footage plays back at half-speed like it should, 30 FPS? Thanks much!

No no, see, it definatly shoots 60 frames in every second, but it takes every subsequent even and odd frame and combines them into one interlaced frame, which it does 30 times per second. Every time you look at one interlaced frame, the even lines show one frame, the odd another. I want to separate the even numbered lines into one frame and the odd numbered lines into another. I will then have 60 frames per second video. I just need to know how I can do that, then I can slow it down to half speed, achieving 30 frames per second slow motion. Does that make sense?

  • Limitations of editing interlaced footage

I have a program timeline full of Red and P2 footage in both 29.97fps and 23.97fps for a program that needs to be delivered in 1080i. I have been advised to bring all of my footage up to 29.97i by adding 3:2 pulldown in AE.I was told that AME does not do a good job of adding the pulldown. I would then edit this interlaced footage to a final in Premiere.
It was also said that "I would then be subject to all of the limitations of editing interlaced footage."
I don't know what that means. Can anybody help?

Ask your question on the Premiere Pro/ AME/ AE forums, resepctively. No point whatsoever posting it here. This forum only deals with general suite issues and pre-sales questions.

  • FX Room and Interlaced Footage...

How important is it to create a separate node tree for each field of interlaced footage in the FX Room?
I have run some tests and found that sometimes it works well without doing this - what is the deciding factor as to whether a single node tree will be successful with interlaced footage?
The Color manual specifies that a node tree must be created for each field, but I'm just wondering if and when this can be avoided.
Is this a bug with Color or is all interlaced footage usually handled this way when working with node trees?
    Thanks.

The node tree is a borrow from the Shake topology, as it interfaces nicely with scripting.
although I have seen Shake forget a line here or there. And yes, you have to deal with interlace on a more discrete level with applications that give you real power, instead of plugins. Its the first thing that you deal with on FileIn import, again using Shake as an example.
Computers are notoriously bad with interlacing/deinterlacing -- its because they have no sense of time or sequence. All the frames exist at once, so what differentiates interlace vs. progressiveness?-- nothing. But its not like selecting "render out progressive" is going to help, either.... that would all be post-COLORFX, and the damage will have been done. The SHAKE manual has a great section on the subject.
In the ColorFX room it is pretty much mandatory. There is a good illustration of a deinterlace/ process /re-interlace tree in the Manual. Pages 247, 248 in the Color 1.0 user manual pdf make short but interesting reading. You will be able to get a single node tree to work, as long as its I/O is sorted out.

  • Viewing interlaced footage on external monitor (HD Prores)

    Hi,
I have a project that I would like to watch on my Flatscreen LCD TV. My project is prores 422 1080i 50Hz (PAL) and so is my footage. My TV is connected to my Imac and set to 1080i 50Hz. FCP is set tot view all frames on external monitor (full screen) but the footage doesn't playback smoothly and still shows that it's interlaced (the TV doesn't process the footage as being interlaced). Is there a way to send an interlaced signal to a TV from FCP?

When in Mastering mode what the MXO driver is doing is interrupting the normal output of your Graphics card and instead sending uncompressed YUV + embedded audio from the application out via the graphics port (ie subverting the normal operation of the graphics card). The MXO then passes that output to its own video output ports for your monitoring pleasure, plus works some magic to translate the signal back as a color critical DVI reference signal for monitoring on a supported DV display.
... Or at least, thats my guess. But as you say, a rough understanding of the process does not make it any cheaper. Sorry about that.
    Cheers

  • Wide Screen Footage becomes 4:3 after Export

    Hallo
I videotaped footage in the Widescreen Format (16:9) and also set the settings of the project in Premiere that way. The project also displays the footage in widescreen.
But as soon as I export it, it will become 3:4 Format.
What am I doing wrong? I think Windows Media Player and VLC Player should be alright with the widescreen format or is it the exportsettings in Premiere?
    Thanks alot for helping
    Michel from Switzerland

Whoa, whoa whoa. Time out. Stop the bus. There's a LOT of misinformation going on here. First off...
    Jim wrote:
    >The original footage has 1.2 pixels. Coming from the "conversion will always introduce some measure of degradation" camp, they should be left without conversion if at all possible
Keep in mind, Jim, the original poster wrote, "media players such as Quicktime, Real Player, Windows Media Player, VLC Player and Youtube." So we're talking about Adobe Media Encoder. So conversion/rendering is taking place regardless of what pixel aspect he/she chooses.
    Secondly, Brian wrote:
    > Windows Media Player has always recognized the videos I export out at 1.2 aspect ratio as 16x9 format and play then fine.
Brian, this is typically not true for clips exported from Windows Media. (Perhaps you have tweaked some preferences to your Player, or perhaps your video drivers do something to correct this?) Even so, that's a rare instance only to your computer, and is not the proper advice to give.
Try this: export a 16x9 clip or 16x9 timeline via Adobe Media Encoder to a "for download" or streaming Windows Media format. You'll notice the available presets specify all of these types of formats at 1.0 PAR. Try it for any QT or Real Media or H.264 "Youtube" format-- it's all 1.0 PAR.
In addition, to test your theory: I forced the PAR to 1.2 and 1.333 for a few different clips I had. My Windows Media player (version 11) played them all incorrectly. As did Quicktime. Now, I agree that if you had an attached video monitor, it may look okay there. But not when viewing on a computer monitor.
Finally, keep in mind, you're creating a clip for someone else to download. Even if your own computer looks okay with Windows Media, the only way to *guarantee* it will display properly on everyone else's across the globe is to use square 1.0 pixels.

  • Another smooth video becomes jerky in iMovie'11

I am downloading many old Sony8 tapes:
I have my camcorder (Sony Handycam Video 8) many years old, connected to a Canopus ADVC110 converter which I've used for many years.
The cables are only red/yellow/white plugs into  the camera, same into Canopus although it does also have a port for "S Video" and DV in/out.
Some of my favorite video is unusable as it comes through, stop and start, very "jerky!! But when I connect my camera to the television, the video plays perfectly.
I saw another discussion where "optimize media" is recommended, but not able to do that, never gave me a choice.
This is so frustrating, to have all this wonderful footage that cannot be used, any suggestions?
I read in the other discussion of this same ilk, a frame speed issue?? Should I try a new converter?? Mine is 10 years old. I used this same footage in iMovie '06, worked fine, only "jerks" going into '11.
    Help!! :-)

    Hi Susan,
I've just added another reply to the thread that I think you are referring to, but I don't think it will help with your situation. Is this the thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5084106?tstart=0
You said "I used this same footage in iMovie '06, worked fine". If you still have that footage, you should be able to import it to iMovie '11. Locate the iMovie HD 6 project in Finder, then right-click (or control-click) on it. From the pop-up menu select Show Package Contents. In the Media folder you should be able to see all the clips that were used in that project. To get them into iMovie '11 it's probably best to copy them to another location, then import to iMovie (File > Import > Movies).
Sorry I can't help with the jerky playback issue you are seeing. But I'll keep thinking!

  • Realtime effects become jerky after being rendered for 24p HD video

    Hello,
Any one comes across that for 24p HD Video clips, e.g. just adding a "cross-dissolve" as the transition between two clips (I have tried both uncompressed and ProRes 422 HQ). Before rendering, the realtime effects (green in color) plays perfectly across. However, after render realtime or render all, we find that there will be once that the video becomes jerkly about at the "out" point of the "cross-dissolve". The same result to the video recorded when "print-to-video" or "edit-to-tape".
The only work-around is to either export the whole sequence to a quicktime movie, OR adding a dummy "Quicktime" effect filter into the both video clips and render all effects. Both methods are very time consuming, as it is video footage
Also, this problem seems happen to 24p only, not 50i or 60i. I wonder there is any error in calculating and making the render file of the effect for 24p.
    Software configuration:
10.4.10, Final Cut Pro 6.0.1, Quicktime (most updated), KONA3 driver 4.0 (actually this problem happens to BMD MultiBridge/DeckLink Systems too)
Is it a "known" bug in FCP? or anyone get similar problem but have a solution to it?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Golden

Hmmm....odd. I only saw this with P2 footage that was imported with FCP 5.0.4 and used in projects since upgraded to FCP 5.1. That little jitter at the end. I had that. I had to reimport all my footage under FCP 5.1.1 and it went away.
But that is NOT what you are dealing with...same issue, different footage, different version of FCP.
    Got me.

  • Should I de-interlace footage when its for PowerPoint, on to a projector?

Hi. Im doing a project for a event. Basically they are going to have an powerpoint presentation with some of the buttons linked to the videos im doing for them at the moment. So should i de-interlace the footage? Some of the videos are ONLY going to be still pictures with some motion and text.
Another question about this. I did some tests which compression works best with PowerPoint. I found that H264 with 2 million Kbps, with the extension changed to .WMV worked best. If you guys have any other better suggestions i would really appreciate it.
    Thanks again

How do i know if my sequence with just jpeg photos is interlaced or not.
When the timeline is active, do Command-0 to see the sequence settings. Look at "Field Dominance." Upper and Lower are interlaced, None is not. If you're working in DV NTSC or PAL, your sequences will normally be interlaced. Now, if all you have is stills and graphics, no motion video at all, you can just change that "Lower" to "None" and your stills will be rendered progressive.
How do i convert my video to square-pixel? I thought only HD footage have square-pixels?
By that I meant that Powerpoint will treat the video as square pixels and it will be distorted a bit unless you account for that. In NTSC land, I'd make the export 640x480 for 4:3 or 640x360 for 16:9. I'm sorry, I don't have the numbers for PAL conversion. On the other hand, you may be able to distort it back to normal in Powerpoint and be fine.
A good data rate for Powerpoint wmv is between 2000Kbps and 3000Kbps. You stated 2 million. I think you meant 2000. Otherwise stated as 2Mbps.
I'm still wondering about that wmv conversion. Maybe I'm missing out! I would normally convert my DV sequence to WMV using Compressor with Flip4Mac plugin or Sorenson Squeeze.

  • Interlaced footage and resize question

Ok I am finishing a past project of creating DVDs from VHS.
Ok I have my clips captured they are DV-DVCPRO NTSC. I used audio filters to remove the audio hum from the VCR.
I want to remove the black border from the side and top of the video. Now my question is if i scale the video to fit wont that offset up the fields.
I am expecting to have 60i footage when I'm done.
Should I use Shake and separate the fields resize then re interlace them.

It's like a public access studio where they videotape live talk shows and that kind of thing. Below is a photo of it.  Analog basically means they're shooting and recording the footage in the studio in NTSC analog where the pictures are interlaced one line at a time.  They're also recording the output onto some kind of capture box (I have no idea what kind).  Afterward, they're exporting the footage to whatever file you need.  The exports they gave me were MOV but I noticed that my Premiere kept crashing every time I tried to edit and then export a finished edit.  So I took the MOV files and converted them to MP4, which now works fine in my copy of Premiere.  Below (the second to last link) is the converted MOV to MP4 file that dropped into Premiere for editying.
