Deactivate Outline function in Word Processor, AppleWorks 6.2.9

For some reason my AppleWorks 6.2.9 word processor has decided that every time I open it I want to make an outline, when all I want is to write a letter or something similar. I have no use for all the arrows and margins and squiggles that are part of the Outline function. Does anyone know how I can deactivate this feature? Thanks for any help. Doc

When something that was working stop, the likely cause is corrupt preferences. Easily fixed by deleting the AppleWorks preferences & restarting AppleWorks.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9 - Word Processor crashes upon any keystroke

I am using AppleWorks 6.2.9 for OS X (10.4.7). Whenever I open a 'Word Processing' document, whether new or existing, AppleWorks quits as soon as I type a single keystroke (any key that would produce a character in the document - modifier keys do not produce this effect).
This does not happen in the Spreadsheeet, Database or Presentation modules; only the Word Processor behaves this way. I have tried:
    1) Deleting Appleworks preference files and restarting
    2) Updating AppleWorks to 6.2.9 (it was 6.2.4), deleting preference files and restarting
    3) Removing AppleWorks 6 (Classic) and AppleWorks 6 (OS X) and all their preferences files and reinstalling only AppleWorks 6.2.4 (OS X)
    4) Removing AppleWorks 6 and all its preference file, reinstalling AppleWorks 6.2.4 (OS X) and updating it to AppleWorks 6.2.9 (OS X)
None of these have done any good.
No program but AppleWorks (as far as I can tell) manifests this problem and then only the Word Processor. Removing and reinstalling AppleWorks and its preference files doesn't fix it.
Thinking that it might be some issue involving the keyboard, I plugged my Apple 101-key keyboard into a USB port on the computer (rather than a USB hub). All other programs seem to work properly with regard to keyboard input; only AppleWorks does this, leading me to think that the problem is not hardware related.
I'm not sure where to go, from here. I have been using AppleWorks on this computer (a G4/1.25DP/MDD) for almost 3 years with few problems. I have installed a couple of games, lately, but nothing that I would think would cause this sort of behaviour.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as word processing is quite central to my use of the computer. In any event, thanks for taking the time to read this and consider it.

  • Missing word processor?

I have recently purchased a new mac mini with OS 10.6.4. to replace an older
mac mini unit. Since the old mini was G4/PPC, I used Target Disk Mode to
transfer itunes, and migration assistant for most other files. Everything
transferred perfectly, except my documents. My documents on the new unit
have symbols that look like they came from a Mummy's Tomb, with other
english words helter-skelter. . . in other words, my documents look nothing
like the originals. I've spent hours looking in the new mini for a word
processor, and the only thing I've found is "TextEdit", which is just crap.
I hope this isn't the de-facto word processor, as it's just about impossible
to use. It seems to me that my old mini had a word processor that was
similiar to MSWord, named Appleword, or Appleworks. I did a search on the new
unit's HD, and found nothing under Appleword, and only "Appleworks User Date"
for Appleworks, which took me nowhere.
Questions: Am I missing a word processor program in this new mini. Please
write yes, because I sure don't want this "TextEdit" garbage to
be my only choice. If I am missing the "other" word processor,
can you tell me how to find, or load it into the new unit?
Do you know why my documents transferred badly, and how to fix
    that?
All help will be greatly appreciated!
    thanks,
    ed farmer

Note that TextWrangler is not a word processor... it is a text editor. That may not sound like a significant difference, but a text editor like TextWrangler includes no functions for styling text (not even basic underline, italics and bold), no functions for laying out the page, no way to insert multimedia such as pictures, etc. Text editors serve a very different function - typically, editing code. And this also means that TextWrangler won't open your AppleWorks documents in the way you want... oh, it'll open them, but you probably aren't interested in seeing the raw contents of the file interpreted as plain text!
If paying for a word processor is what you're getting hung up on, try something like [NeoOffice|http://www.neooffice.org>. It's not as good as iWork, in my opinion, but it'll do the job.

  • Pages: Is there a way to make lines independent, like a real word processor

There are so many things that infuriate me about Pages. Save As.. missing, autosave, etc which are NOT like 99% of other apps on the Mac.
    Specifially (today):
I have a letter in Pages. It’s a standard business letter you have see 1m times.
After the first line of the address, at the top of the letter, I insert a carriage return and BINGO, the tabs in the middle of the letter are suddenly all messed up.
    Grrrrrr.
Is there a way to make lines independent in Pages? I have this crazy belief that letters are not Web Pages, not HTML, and that an extra line somewhere should not reformat following lines way down the page.
Alternately, is there some 3rd party word processor that works like the old Apple Works, with graphics and tables you can recommend?
    Thanks

Save As is still there, hold down the option key as you go to the File menu. This is not Pages, it is Mountain Lion.

    Grrrrrr.
Then you are doing something wrong, probably pounding away at spaces, tabs and returns to position things. Turn on invisibles to see what is going on:
Menu > View > Show Invisibles
If you have strings of tabs, spaces and returns that is the problem.
Is there a way to make lines independent in Pages?
Yes, hit the return key. Like every other Word Processing program.

Time to learn Pages. AppleWorks is dead. Stop pining for it. This is a case of user error and instead of blaming Pages, it would pay to find out what you have done and stop doing that.
Pages, except for the fancy DTP features, tables and charts works like most other Word Processing apps. Just a case of learning new tricks. My guess is you have other stuff going on.

  • What is a good word processor app as pages has changed and is now rubbish

Since some stupid update on pages that has absolutely ruined the entire thing, can anyone give me advise on a good word processor app?

If you had Pages ’09 v4+ before updating to Pages v5+, then the older, more functional application will be in /Applications/iWork '09. This retains your document compatibility with existing ’09 documents, which no other application on earth can open directly.
If you are done with Apple's interpretation of word processing, then export your documents to MS Word format, and then you have options. One might be Office for Mac 2011 for native MS Word document compatibility with MS Office users. Or, the free LibreOffice, which was purposely (and actively) developed to be a Microsoft Office replacement solution. It is current with Office 2013 documents.

  • Word Processor for Panther

Hi, I'm asking this question for my MIL who owns an older iBook with Panther.... Is there a way to get an older/compatible version of iWork for her machine at this point in time? Or is there another word processor program that we can try? Obviously, as it's been several years since she's had the iBook, she doesn't use such programs often, but she wants one now. The iWork that is available now is only for 10.4.10 and higher.
    Any suggestions welcomed!
    Thanks,
    Aviva

You could look for a used copy of iWork '05 or '04 on eBay. Either should work with Panther. Or you could look for a copy of AppleWorks (PPC) which also works on that model with Panther.
The commercial product, Papyrus, is an integrated productivity application that will work with Panther - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. There is also the free open source integrated suite, NeoOffice Aqua, that is available for PPC Macs and works with Panther or later. It is similar to MS Office.

  • Word Processor

Is there anywhere I can get a word processor online for my mac? Mine didn't come with appleworks, and I'm just looking for something basic to put on it. I took a look at openoffice.org but I don't think that is right for my system. Thanks!

Andrew, suggest that you check the System Install CD that originally came with your iMac. You should be able to custom install AppleWorks. If not, then you will be able to do so using TomeViewer.

  • Best option for a word processor for the G3 dual usb running Panther

More and more I am coming to rely on my G3 for word processing tasks - particularly research notes and a personal journal.
So far I've tried the simple text editor (quick but poor text on-screen), OpenOffice (being xwindow it's slow to load and slow to update screen) and AppleWorks (good display but no spell checker) -each have problems for me.
What is the best word processor for the G3 running Panther (or Classic/9 for that matter). I need: Quick to load/run, readable text, automatic word wrap, spell checking and a reasonable path to exchange files with my desktop Linux system.

AppleWorks does have a spellchecker; it just is not automatic (check-as-you-type).
In AppleWorks, go to Edit menu > Writing Tools > Check Document Spelling.
I've never used anything (in a major way) except AppleWorks.
A couple of options which you haven't mentioned are Pages in _iWork '06_ (or earlier; the current version has left behind G3 processors) and _Microsoft Office for Mac_.
I'm unsure of how well any of these will integrate with Linux. Open Office may be your best bet there. (I'm just guessing. It seems like common sense to me that Open Office would work with an open OS like Linux.)
Another application which is creating a buzz and sounds like it could work for you is _Google Docs_. There would certainly be no problem with Linux integration there. It looks like it would be easy sharing all the way around and you shouldn't find any incompatibilities as long as you have a decently up-to-date browser.
I'm not sure anyone has developed the "perfect" word processor, but there are some good ones out there. Good luck on your quest.

  • HT202879 Other Word Processors than Pages? & why do we have to pay for an upgrade that is incomplete?

    I am very unhappy.
In order to access my documents from iCloud I have to upgrade to Mavericks (free, alright) and the new Pages, for which I have to pay.
The new Pages (and Numbers etc) does not have the same functionality as the one I have been using - yet I have to pay for it. Alright, Apple promises to upgrade in the next six months and add the new functionality. This is not good enough.
This was a very unpleasant surprise today - when I went to my document that I have been working on on my iPhone and my Mac at various times during the day and the Mac one had changed to 'Untitled 47' and the version on my iPhone would not open on my Mac unless I upgraded to the new Pages - $19.99 - and to OSX Mavericks - free - but I don't want to upgrade yet. And I don't want to pay for a new version of Pages that clearly does not have the same functionality(according to the user comments and the apple page that  this discussion is about).
I have praised Apple to high heaven for the functionality of iCloud. But this really really annoys me.
If there's anything I hate its a company I am relying on forcing me to upgrade before they've sorted out the bugs.
I am definitely considering changing to a different company's word processor - if only they had a word processor that I could use on my Mac and iOS devices.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks Tom! Following your advice I posted a (shorter) version at feedback.
And thanks for those hints. Yes I've been looking at those ones.
IA Writer and Byword both can use the iCloud.
    Writeroom only syncs using Dropbox.
Of course they're very minimal apps compared to Pages, or Word.
    I feel very depressed.
Perhaps I will have to use one of these and then import into Word for final editing.
Believe it or not, for a minute I thought MS Word might be a contender for iOS syncing - because there is this thing called Office 365. But look at the reviews.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/office-mobile-for-office-365/id541164041
I really don't want to deal with all the problems of updating to Mavericks just now.

  • Product key not accepted - cannot register Word processor...

    Hi,
I bought an HP dm4 including Windows 7. When I try to register the Word Processor program by using the Microsoft Windows 7 product key in the sticker at the bottom of my laptop I get a wrong key notice!
    What is the problem??
    Thanks for help!! T.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Please confirm the question I asked you. Did your computer come with Word 2010 Starter and Excel 2010 Starter already pre-installed on your laptop ?
These versions are versions that do not time out, they have a few features taken away from them that the full version has, if you want the full functionality, as well as access to power point etc you will need to purchase the full version.

  • Justification on word processor using java

hello! i would like to ask if there is a function in java that has the function similar to that of the word procesor......or if anyone has created a function that does that.....please help thanks!!!!!

    Hi,
in another of your posts I left a link to application SimplyHTML. The link is http://www.lightdev.com/template.php4?id=3
Did you visit this link already? It leads to a Java application implementing a word processor. Does this meet your needs? If not, it would be interesting to hear about what you are missing in detail...

  • What word processor is right for me?

    Hi guys.
I have done extensive searches on this topic, but still have some unanswered questions.
First of all, my 1gig black macbook will be arriving some time next week (fingers crossed). I can't wait. As so many people with the intel chips, I now have to chose a proper word processor that will meet my needs. Needless to say, I can't wait until Office 2007 is released!
Essentially I need to be able to receive word documents and powerpoint presentations from windows machines. I would like to be able to open them and edit them as I please. Also, I need to be able to send them back, open them on a windows machine and print them.
I am a university student, so I only use word for papers that can occasionally include digital photos, or just pictures from the internet.
I use powerpoint to look at lecture notes from my professor and need to able to take notes on them i.e. add my own info to the slides.
I can live without Excel for now. I have seen the recent beta of NeoOffice, that looks like a very good solution. Can I send/receive documents to/from windows machines? My only problem with this solution is that it seems to require close to 400mb. That seems large to me and I would think the program might not be as snappy as I want it to be. Any thoughts?
I could instal MS Office for macs, but since it doesn't run natively, I am hesitating. What about a program like Papyrus? I have downloaded a trial version and it runs extremely fast. I was not able to find a powerpoint equivalent on there. Is there one?
Also, what about iWork? I saw that pages is is mainly for publishing and using fancy templates...Is that program more than I need? Keynote of course looks great.
    Any comments are much-appreciated.

Appleworks has always worked for me since leaving microshaft! I use notta for MS stuff on my computer and in my home. I just went to the recent Pages and like it a lot - appleworks works on my MBP on intel and is quite fast but I am also going to switch over 100% to pages! I am actually in transition. neooffice loads very slow but it it nice. I tried and used to use it but i remember reading that there was support or development issues going on re: not happening or else the actual freeoffice ro whatever the parent app is does not support anythging with neooffice anymore so i stopped using it. I found some stsuff slow in neoooffcie due to it being run in Java.
If it was to be developed and ssupported more I would probably try using it. be careful of the various builds re: your OS too. i was using a panther build before and that was my introduction.
I am happy generally with pages. I need something that is as stable as I can get for business stuff.
Neooffice is somethin if it does take off again that I would consider. but slow load and sosmetimes i type and there is a lag before the characters emerge on the page.

  • Word Processor / WordPerfect  MBP

    Hey everyone,
I can't believe that the MBP does not come with a decent word processor. I've searched the forums and have found little on how to solve this problem. Does anyone know of a decent word processor to get for free for the MBP?
ALSO, I have a bunch of word AND Wordperfect files. Does anyone know the best way to get these opened on the MBP? I've tried Appleworks, but it kept crashing my computer (and it can't recognize WordPerfect files at all). Thanks for the help!

    Hi Jack,
I have not heard of a free word processing program that is very good, but if you are willing to spend a bit, microsoft word:mac is very good for me.I know that it can open windows word files, but I am not sure about word perfect because I have never tried. I think it is worth it to buy this software and in factt I really like all of the programs in office (powerpoint, exel, enterage and word)

  • Outline function?

I've recently made the switch from PC to Mac, MS Word to Pages. Does Pages have an outline function similar to Word's, which allows you to collapse all the text and see just the various levels of the headings at the click of a button?

Does Pages have an outline function similar to Word's, which allows you to collapse all the text and see just the various levels of the headings at the click of a button?
You may check with a search upon the keyword "Outline" in the PDF User Guide but, as far as I know, the response is NO.
_Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'09

  • Default word processor in OS X

It seems there is an app called TextEdit in OS X, so if I'm mostly just going to be emailing and typing up some occasional documents, does that mean I probably wouldn't need MS Word or Pages? i.e. I don't need Office or iWork to get a lot out of a Macbook, right?
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, C.M. Welcome to the Discussions.
While TextEdit can support tables, embedded images, lists, and import/export in Word format, the actual performance of these features is not, IMO, up to par with Word or other word processors. For example, table import and export is often problematic. There's little flexibility w.r.t. page numbering and other features one comes to expect from a true word processor. Therefore, what you mean by "occasional documents" is very important.
The following applications are frequently mentioned in discussions of MS Word alternatives. They each have their adherents and fans. In alphabetical order:
    • AppleWorks, essentially been superseded by Pages.
    • Mellel
    • Mariner Write
    • Nissius Writer Express
    • Pages, part of Apple's new iWork bundle.
    • Ulysses
Some additional "office suite" alternatives that are regularly mentioned include:
    • ThinkFree Office
    • NeoOffice: a free prototype of a port of OpenOffice to Mac OS X.
You can investigate other solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
You must compare your requirements against the features of each package to determine the one that best meets your needs.
    Good luck!
