Decision to use Designer10g vs. Viso

My team is absolutely new to using Designer. We have functional and non-functional requirements. However, we never went through the process of creating Process/Data flow diagrams. We don't plan to use Designer for creating ERD nor creating the DB, only for the Process/Data flow diagrams. With that said, is it worth it to use Designer to create these diagrams or would VISIO be easier. Also, if Designer is the way to go, is there a way to import the requirements developed and use those requirements to create the diagrams. I hope that made sense...
Thanks.

I can't conceive of how Visio would be easier, and I have used it to generate diagrams directly from an Oracle database.
The ERD tool in designer is not only easier but it forms part of your project - it can be updated in real time to show any changes in your data model design and can also be used to make changes to your data model. It also is integral to the configuration and version control aspects of designer and is of course custom built for Oracle. Note that Visio is only going to generate a diagram from your physical database schema, whereas Designer ERD shows a diagram of your logical design. This means ERD will show you the error of your design ways before they become physical errors for your developers.
My advice would be to use designer to the full because Oracle likes to make sure it's products all talk to each other, it offers support all on one telephone number - Microsoft has no such requirement for it's products to talk to Oracle and may not be too interested in answering any support calls about Visio talking to Oracle.

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Is it a wise decision to use flash for e-Learning course.

    Dear Friends,
Iam working for a company which is developing e-learning courses in Flash with AS3, Learning management system in dot net. There was a discussion with my superior, one guy was telling nowadays flash users reduced, in future flash will be outdated. This is not a wise decision to use flash for e-Learning.
Another issue is we cannot show our courses in ipad or Iphone.. please pass your comments and ideas to me. and suggest me, whether how can i use my swf courses in to ipad or iphone or tablets... Tell me whether iam in a right way.
i need another info, Whether silver light will be an alternate to create elearning courses with interactivity? That guy suggested Silverlight (because he is a dot net guy).
i need ur serious advice and info. Please tell me, list of companies using flash for Elearning development.
Kindly advice me whether i can continue my courses in Flash with AS3 or should i stop and change my work environment.
    Regards,
    Syed Abdul Rahim

The contents of what you're trying to teach make all the difference.
Are your tests very visual requiring interactivity with visual objects and media or are you just asking questions with various form-esque inputs (text inputs, radio inputs, etc)?
If it's very visual then it's worth considering AIR to some small extent but you'd really need to have a lot of time invested for that.
Ultimately I'd be converting it to HTML5/JS/CSS3. That's the 99.9% positivity rated presumption I'll make. As a general consideration, where Flash may previously have been used to "grade" a paper or tell the user their current answer is correct, this might need to change. You should be sending the users answer to a server to get a response. JavaScript is plain-text and can be read so you'd want to curb cheating by making sure the server contains the answers and not the client. This is an automation you'll lose by abandoning SWF.
I use C#.NET myself and I'd avoid silverlight like the plague. Let's be very clear here. Flash is not going away. They are repositioning themselves to handle more sophisticated endeavors in the future like full 3d games. Flash is auto-installed with the OS, the user base is not getting smaller. Silverlight almost never had a purpose to begin with, besides Microsoft just wanted a sandbox to play in itself. Windows Metro is the only potential obstacle in the future as it has been said to load SWF content externally, like an application, rather than embedded into the browser.

  • Invoke Decision service using Java instead of web service

  • How to change data in decision table using excel file in operating system?

    Hello, BRF Experts
I now brf + for the first time in the current project is being developed.
Now, project has been facing a big problem.
Develop system that was developed in the history of decision table in the operating system can be used to update excel file, etc. I do not know whether.
So, I was tested, but can not change data in decision table.
[ error message : system is not change allowed ].
The operating system itself to the current system setting is immutable and check it
: changes and transports for client-specific object -> no changed allowed
: cross-client object changes -> no changes to repository and cross-client customizing object.
Decision table in the operating system can update the details if I want to know what to do.
Maintenance view can be modified in the operating system as a decision table, I wonder if you can create a view.

    Hi ,
Exchanging data with Microsoft Excel is done with the help of the XML-based file format (file extension .XSLX) introduced with Microsoft Excel 2007. If you are using an older version of Microsoft Office, you can download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack to upgrade the supported file formats from the Microsoft Download Center ([Exchanging Decision Table Data With Microsoft Excel |http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466]). Once you have downloaded the Compatibility Pack, you have to install it on every workstation that has an older version of Microsoft Office installed.

    Hope this helps.

  • Running Business Rules with Decision Service using WebDav

Hello everybody, I have a problem when I change a rule from Rules Author.
    I have the following scenario:
Machine1 - I have Oracle Soa Suite 10 and I have defined a rule set using Rules Author pointing to a WebDav repository on Machine2
Machine2 - I have define my WebDav repository, it contains the rule "amountToPay > 100"
Machine3 - I have a deploy of a BPEL process using a Decision Service and Decide Activity elements pointing to my WebDav repository
When I test my BPEL process it works correctly, but after I change the rule in Rules Author (on machine1) to "amountToPay > 200" the next invocations of BPEL process still evaluating the rule "amountToPay > 100" and doesn't evaluates my last changes on the rule, and I need to redeploy my BPEL process so that it takes the new changes on the repository.
I am using Assert facts, execute rule set, retrieve results, and reset the session operation pattern in decision service and assertExecuteWatchStateless in invoke activity. I tried using assertExecuteWatchStateful as well but there was no difference in the result, any idea of that?
Does the BPEL process needs to be redeployed?
What can I do so that my rules take effect?
I've searched for documentation but I couldn't find any solution.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle Fusion and working on Business Rules.
Can you please tell me the changes need to be done in the sample java application to connect to the webDAV repository(carrental example which they have given in user guide)?
    Thanks in advance.
    I am using 10.1.3.1 version.

    Hi,
I have resolved this issue by performing following steps.
    1. Exported Decision Table Data into XL.
    2. Removed the action variable.
    3. Added again the same parameters as Action
    4. Imported XL file of Decision table.
    5. Validated and Activated. It worked.

  • How to use PROCESS_PARAMETER function in the Decision Maker

    Hi mates,
I would really like to know if some of you has already experienced with the "Decision Maker" process (available starting from 7.0 realise). I'm interested to use this process type giving as input a runtime parameter filled in one ABAP program which has been executed before in the same process chain. The input parameter read from the ABAP program will be used in the Decision Maker in order to decide what of next processes will be exectuted.
    Example
Let's consider this scenario: the program just wirtes the parameter p in the SAP memory with the ID OPT1, OPT2, OPT3
    REPORT  ztest08.
    PARAMETER p TYPE n.
    DATA: prog TYPE sy-repid.
    CASE p.
      WHEN '1'.
SET PARAMETER ID 'OPT1' FIELD p.
      WHEN '2'.
SET PARAMETER ID 'OPT2' FIELD p.
      WHEN '3'.
SET PARAMETER ID 'OPT3' FIELD p.
    ENDCASE.
For this progam I've created an ABAP process variant called YTEST01 which uses an ABAP variant that is defined with p=1.
Now, in the formula editor of the Decision Maker, I set this code
    PROCESS_PARAMETER( 'ABAP', 'YTEST01','OPT1', 'LOW', '        0' ) = 1
Hopefully the Decision Maker should get the parameter p=1 from the SAP memory reached with the ID OPT1. But it doesn't, and it sends me back an error message that some error has occured during the formula.
Note that, in the formula, I left the last parameter blank.
Does someone of you already experienced with Decision Maker using PROCESS_PARAMETER operands?
Thank you very much and best regards,
      Matteo

  • Design decision: good to use delete cascade in database?

    Hello,
Suppose there are two tables: customer and address.
These two tables are linked as one (customer) to many (address), and delete cascade. Every time when the application deletes a customer record, the linked address(es) will be deleted as well.
For my opinion, this is good because of performance and less coding.
But bad for maintenance, since the address is implicitly deleted, the developer may not know this in advance if the system is not documented well.
What is your opinion? What facts will affect your decision to use it or not?

The design should say that when a customer record is deleted, the linked address records must also be deleted. Otherwise your database loses referential integrity.
So for me, if the database supported cascading deletes, I would use them. Why would I do extra programming which the database is offering to do for me, especially since my version of the code is likely to be less robust than the database's version? The only exception would be if some other action needed to be taken besides just deleting the dependent records, and that action couldn't be handled within the database.
As for your comments about maintenance, it's true that if the system is not documented then developers may have difficulty in maintaining it. However I don't exactly foresee designers saying to themselves "Oh, this system isn't well documented so I won't use Feature X".

  • About using categories and perspectives for new user

We are just beginning a conversion and upgrade project to convert our Web site to Oracle Portal. I'm trying to get a good handle on some different things we need to resolve as part of the project. One of the first decisions is using Categories and Perspectives.
I'd like to ask users about how they have used categories and perspectives and some real-world examples of how these work and improve the site and user experience.
    About us
We're a big nonprofit river authority and wholesale electric provider in Austin, Texas. Currently, we offer very limited online transaction capabilities. However, we are diverse organization and users come to us looking for every specific information, so these elements may be very helpful. I'm evaluating how we can use these and other elements to make recommendations. Some real-world examples and best practices would help a lot.
    Thank you, Charles Boisseau

    Continuing the thread...
Perspectives and categories may be leveraged in custom search portlets, so that you can enter the content one time, in one place, and have selected content display in multiple places.
Re: our "news" concept: our central communications group posts news stories tagged with one or more perspectives, such as which school is related to the story. This allows us to keep all of our news stories in one page group, but reuse the content elsewhere. For example, for the School of Nursing intranet, we can use a custom search portlet that automatically displays only that school's stories.
You'll want to do some up-front planning regarding your classification scheme. One significant limitation of both categories and perspectives is the inability to change the hierarchy. Oracle Portal product team, if you're reading this, this is a serious pain! I might also recommend leaving your classification scheme relatively flat. Tagging content with perspectives becomes more difficult if the content contributor has to visually traverse a deep hierarchy of perspectives.
Categories work similarly, but we mainly use them to visually sort items on a page using the "Group By" feature of a region.
Hope this gets some gears turning.

  • TS3988 Can 2 people use the same icloud?

Need help badly, such a mess! My son is under my Itunes acct-I have an Iphone 4s, he has an Iphone 4. Somehow his phone is on the ICloud with our Apple ID (which is my gmail address) & pw. He also has an @me.com-set up by me trying to seperate our phones (mistake now I know!) Our ICloud Backup Storage is a mess-we use 1 laptop for Itunes and now ICloud--his phone updated & all my contacts went to his phone-he erased my people off his phone b/4 checking with my phone-now ALL my contacts are lost, only his remain on both our phones! Even worse now I cannot text him--I "think" his phone is seeing my phone as his now, if that makes any sense at all! HELP!

Thank you so much for your answer! Yes, this is my 1st time to the community too, again thank you! Okay, here's the sequence that 'may' help explain; 1st- My son got an Iphone 4 & wanted to buy songs, etc., so I added his phone to my Itunes acct..--he consequently signs on under my email address (my Apple ID) & my PW. No problem then, it had/has listed ex. Mom's Iphone & Son's Iphone (mine is a 4s, don't think that makes a difference- except in telling u that Siri doesn't work properly now either & refers to my son's name now instead of mine!) As far as I can tell, the real problems began with the ICloud settings on our Iphones--meaning the settings on 'where' to back our phone's- ICloud or to the Laptop (both phones back up to the same laptop.) It's so complicated I can hardly explain it, so sorry if I'm bouncing around! I did not mean to or rather it was not an intentional decision to use the same ICloud, however since we share the same comp. and Itunes account, and basically passwords--it somehow happened. I don't know how to undo this mess! Last night I went to ICloud.com & was able to sign on with my son's @me.com user ID & our Itunes PW (aka-Apple ID.) It really didn't do anything except show me Iphone features, ex. Contacts, Ibook, etc.. I did 'not' see a place where I could change any settings, like to possibly change his Apple ID, or pw...that's all I can think of to change? And even with that I'm not sure how to do that...he's 14, a minor--so he has to be under my settings to a degree. Don't mind at all having seperate ID's, but we do share "some" music and app's for example. Is any of this making sense or even partially explaining my problems? Thank you in advance!

  • How can I make an E-Book using InDesign?

I initally assembled an ebook using Microsoft Word and uploaded the file to BookBaby along with the cover design as a separate image file. The E-book is a relatively simply layout, 100 color cartoons and a text "forward" on first page. However, BookBaby said NOT....I needed to resend the book in a "fixed format". Thus my decision to use InDesign. However, since I've never used InDesign for any work like this I am curious if anyone can help or at the very least, recommend decent links at how I could initially begin to restructure my entire book? As mentioned, it's a relatively simple layout from an asthetics standpoint - - 100 separate cartoons in full color that are 700 pixels wide in JPEG format. Then the "forward" and that full color cover with text already in the image for embedding as the cover design.
Any insights, thoughts, feedback and / or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Normally a paid-for book from the iBookstore can only be read on an Apple device, it tells you that in the requirements section of the purchase page.

  • Creating a new database vs. Using the existing database

    Hi,
I have to build a new desktop application over an existing oracle database -
Current database is around 300 gb
    Has 1500+ tables
Tables are in denormalized form and has ungrouped table columns
High level of nesting is done in the triggers.
Now before I take decision to use existing database I want to know
    1. what factors to consider while choosing between the existing db or a new db?
    Thanks in advance.

Some of the things I would consider before including the two desktop applications together:
Would you mind impacting one or the other application (downtime) if you needed to bounce the database for any reason, or if there were issues with the database. Keeping them separate would prevent having to bring down both applications if the database went down for any reason (planned or otherwise).
Would the type of activity in both databases be so similar that all global optimizer and other parameter settings be perfect for both cases?
Would the SLA be the same for both databases? Would your customers agree to impacts of one application data if you had to roll back the database for the other application?
By having the two applications in the same database, you are also stuck with having to wait for both application vendors to certify their product with the next patch level or version for upgrades. Keeping them separate eliminates this problem.
Is there any compelling reason to keep them together?
Personally, I would keep them separate for all of the above reasons, and many more which I did not bother to write.

  • What are the pros and cons of using a port system.

    Hello All,
I'm a new explorer in the OS X UNIX world, and have installed macports, and, for the most part, succeeded in building and using a number of scientific applications.
I have noted a somewhat negative attitude by some on the use of port systems, while others seem quite content with them.
When making my decision to use macports, these "selling points" seemed desirable to me:
¤ Confines ported software to a private “sandbox” that keeps it from intermingling with your operating system and its vendor-supplied software to prevent them from becoming corrupted.
¤ Allows you to create pre-compiled binary installers of ported applications to quickly install software on remote computers without compiling from source code.
Especially the first point seems valuable, but am I deluding myself? Or, am I losing functionality/ flexibility? Or, am I just missing out on manually installing lots of dependents?
_I'm not trying to start a feud, here._
I'm just looking for some pointers (preferably well-substantiated) from those more knowledgeable than me, before I am any further committed to a choice I might later regret.
    Thanks,
    PWK

The biggest drawback/complaint I have is that you're bound by the implementation/installation policy of whoever built the port.
For example, take the installation issue - all software gets installed into some specific directory which is great one one hand - fewer compatibility issues with conflicting versions from what Apple provide. The downside, though, is that nothing on your machine will use these versions unless/until you tweak them.
For example, maybe you want to install the MacPorts version of PHP, great, but the standard Apache won't use that, so you either need to install the MacPorts version of Apache, or tweak your Apache installation to use the non-standard PHP version.
Well, what about PATHs, I hear you ask? well, sure, you could prepend the MacPorts/fink/whatever directory to your $PATH, but then you always use the MacPorts/fink/whatever version of any installed software which might not be what you want.
This becomes more of an issue in a multi-server environment where you have multiple systems that all need tweaking/maintaining - nothing worse than setting up a new server by copying an existing installation, only to find that it depends on MacPorts/fink/whatever being installed.
The corollary to this is that these package managers often install ancillary software that you do not need, nor want. It might have improved since I last looked, but installing either MacPorts or fink, for example, installs whole new versions of perl, GNU tools (gzip/gunzip, etc.), curl, and more - they even install new copies of openssl/ssh.
I don't want these. These already exist on my system so what are they needed for? Why can't they use the standard copies? Are they 'tweaked' in some way? How? why?
The secondary issue is that you are limited to the port's implementation - especially compile options - which may not be ideal for your machine.
Unlike most GUI-based software, much open-source software uses compile-time options to configure the executable. Now the port installer might do a reasonable job of tweaking the installation, but it's not psychic so there will be cases where you end up with sub-optimal installations. Sure, they might work well enough, but that doesn't beat knowing what those options are up-front and building your own.
Now there have been cases where I've tried to install software and almost given up when faced with a daunting list of dependencies (try RRD, or PHP w/ GD, for example) and have almost given up, but when you succeed the satisfaction of getting it working, plus the fact you now know how to do it counts for a lot.
Now, do I wish that Apple would do a better job of keeping up with the latest versions of the open source software they include in Mac OS X? absolutely - isn't that what Software Update is all about??). But I also wish the port maintainers would spend more of their time updating the original source configure and make scripts to incorporate whatever changes they're making to the code so that Mac users can easily use the same source distribution as other UNIX flavors.
And right there is the final rub IMHO - all the while the port managers create their distributions of common tools Mac OS X is treated like a poor step-child that's kept in the cellar. OK, maybe not that bad, but there's no reason why anyone who wants to install open source software on a Mac should need much more than:
    (download>
    ./configure
    make
    sudo make install
it really isn't all that hard. Too often the port managers perpetuate the myth that Mac OS X is too different from other UNIX systems to work with the standard tools that everyone else knows.
Now, maybe I'm also too old for this game since you always downloaded and built tools yourself when I started, and maybe package managers on Linux (which may have the same issues I've complained about) have helped elevate Linux in the mindset of a younger generation who are looking for a quick fix. All I can say to that is…
    GET OFF MY LAWN! :-D
