Dedicated or shared  server configuration

Hi all,
Good day...We have a 10204 rac db running on a linux server. Our concurrent connection are more than 1000..Is that good to have a shared server configuration or we can continue with dedicated server configuration...
thanks,

In reality, all Oracle databases are capable of supporting both shared AND dedicated connections at the same time.
So perhaps the question becomes:
Based on the workload (typical transaction style) of the connections, how many shared and how many dedicated connections are required?
To answer that YOU need to understand your workload.

    Whereas Shared server the user connection is shared, that is user is connecting by dispatchers and when a user is idle his <br>resource can be used by other users, thus lessen the load on system. Never heard that anyone uses shared Server Setup with SAP.
    With SAP, it is NOT the user having a DB connection.
    It is the workprocess, and it is keeping it even if all users are idle.
    You allways have dedicated Oracle processes for SAP Workprocesses.
    The rather old note 70197 states, that Oracle MTS (multi threaded server)
    allowed, but you are on your own to configure it and there are some pitfalls.

  • Oracle 9i Shared Server Configuration

    My working platform is as:
    O.S. : Windows 2000 Server
    Database: Oracle 9i Release 2
    Database Configuaration is as:
    Database: Manually created (not the default one) and SID = test
    Listener :
    Name: listener1
    Port No. : 1523 (Not the default 1521)
    Associated with "test" database.
    Dispatchers: (PROTOCOL = TCP) (DISPATCHERS = 3)
    Shared Server: Set to 2
    At Client side (connected through LAN) : I am configured a "Service Name" using Oracle NetManager and Set the following parameter : Connection type = "Shared Server", SID = test, Listener Port = 1523, Host Name = IP Addrs of Server Machine
    In this scenario, whenever I want to test the connection from client side (from Oracle NetManager), it shows the following error message.
    Listener is not configured to handle this type of connection
    Please help me to solve that problem.

    "Listener is not configured to handle this type of connection"
    When I try to connect through Listener which is running at non-default port ( i.e. apart from 1521) the above message is shown.
    As soon as, I checked the service status of the running listener and I observed that listener is handling one handler which is for "Dedicated" only. There is no other handler initiated for that listener to handle "Dispatchers"

  • ISP shared server configuration -- are they nuts?

    Help! I don't know if I'm being fed a line by my ISP or not.
    I am in the process of moving my organization's Web site to a shared Solaris server hosted by one of the big ISPs.
    When I was given the IP address and FTP'd to the site to start transferring files, I found I could navigate all the way up to the root of the Solaris server. All of the standard Unix directories seem to be visible, such as dev, usr, bin, etc. Although my user rights appear to be limited -- I can't copy a file into usr/games for example -- I can clearly see the folder names for the other clients sharing the server (although I could not see their individual files) and can FTP back some of the operating system software, including a quota file. Some of the folder names are pretty obviously the names of the other companies sharing the site.
    This is not how my previous hosting service handled things. They mapped the customer account to the root of the customer's home directory and I could not see anything of the host server, other customer folders, or the operating system. Nor could I see other client's home directories.
    I've been told by the hosting company that these rights are granted because "a customer not 'living' in a chroot'ed environment can overflow a buffer in a command that has additional privileges and gain root access, thereby granting themselves greater access than they should have."
    Isn't there a better solution to this problem that doesn't end up inadvertently disclosing the identity of the other businesses sharing the host server? Or am I just being neurotic and this is standard ISP practice for shared boxes?
    Thanks!

    Thanks a lot and i know the reason now but i removed the conn=2 form the dispatchers parameter value but immediately after this i got error message
    ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
    and users were not able to connect with the database so i changed value back. Why did i receive this error message? any idea
    Thanks

  • Dedicated Server Process or Shared Server Process

    Hi,
    I am little confused to justify the number of users that may be best to use dedicated server process or shared server process.
    Kindly advice.

    In addition, make sure you account for administrative issues. It's a lot more challenging to trace applications using shared server connections. Shared server configurations also tend to introduce a variety of gotchas into a DBA's world-- at a minimum, most articles you find on the internet tend to ignore any shared server specific issues. That's one of the reasons that I tend to be of the opinion that if you have to ask, you probably don't need to enable shared server.

    ShanIt's not an either/or situation, as the database does not "run in shared server mode" vs. "run in dedicated server mode". A database will *always* accept dedicated connections if requested by the client. It *may* accept shared server connections -- *if* requested by the client *and if* it is configured to accept them.

  • Shared Server and Dedicated Connetion

    We have 1000 dedicated server database connection. My boss want me to configure one shared server connection out of 1000 dedicated connection for 100+ user of one particular module. Is it possible?
    I guess if we activated shared server at database level then for 999 connetion we have to pass SERVER=DEDICATED at connection string. Which is not feasible for me seeing my current enviroment.

    Unless you start using a shared tnsnames.ora file ( some where at a netwerk share ) and have pointing TNS_ADMIN to it, it means updating every tnsnames on every client you have.
    However I found this link:
    http://www.filibeto.org/sun/lib/nonsun/oracle/11.1.0.6.0/B28359_01/server.111/b28310/manproc003.htm
    Where it says you can limit the number of concurrent shared sessions used by setting the parameter SHARED_SERVER_SESSIONS
    Reading more of it, it looks like you can also define a seperate listener, with a seperate port for the shared server configuration and configure the dispatchers with that listener information.
    So, it looks like you don't even have to change 1000 clients
    Good Luck,

  • Shared server config issues

    Dear experts,
    Below is my environment details:
    DB: Oracle 10gR1 Base (10.2.0.1)
    OS: RHEL 5
    I have configured shared servers as shown below:
    1) Set the following parameters
    dispatchers='(protocol=tcp)(dispatchers=2)'
    max_dispatchers=10
    shared_servers=4
    max_shared_servers=10
    circuits (not configured)
    2) Changed TNS parameter as below
    I modified SERVER=DEDICATED to SERVER=SHARED
    3) lsnrctl services
    the output of this command shows dispatchers ready
    Now coming to the issue, when i connect to the database using new tns alias, i see "NONE" displayed under "SERVER" column of the V$SESSION view. It should have been SHARED.
    Appreciate your help in this regard.
    Thanks
    P

    In Shared Server configuration when we see value 'NONE' , it means there is no task being processed by shared server for that session. The server column will infact show status of 'SHARED' if there is some task being processed at that particular time by the shared server process for that session. Hence to check the status, fire some big query and then check the server status .
    you can check the shared server as
    select server from v$session where machine='XXXX' ;--neeraj

  • Shared server connections.

    we are running a third party application with an 11g database shared server configuration and OAS 10gR2. Dispatchers set to 10 and shared servers set to 100. When the database instance is started, the 100 shared server and 10 dispatcher sessions start up and I can see these processes with ps -ef. They show as ora_s0* processes and ora_d0* respectively.
    At some point after the startup of the application, it establishes a connection pool of 100 sessions (10 per dispacher). The process Id of these sessions correspond to the pids of the dispatcher processes not the shared server processes.
    The 100 sessions in the connection pool remain idle until a user logs on to the system. When a successful login is made, I see that about 8 of the idle sessions become active and remain so until the user finishes with the application and logs out.
    Questions :
    1. Is there a query I can do to show me the shared sherver sessions i.e. ora_s0* being used?
    3. Are the 100 sessions (in the connection pool) really the shared server sessions even though they show up with the pid of the parent dispatcher?
    2. I need to record the number of connections being made to the system over a period and how long each user is connected for, could you suggest the best method (including queries) of going about this task?
    Thank you.

    I see only ash the option for you, else you need to have your own scheduled script/procedure that would gather that information.
    Thank you.

  • Dedicated or Shared Sessions?

    I have a 10g SE1 + ASM running in Windows 2003 ES with 4GB RAM with /3GB switch and 7TB JBOD storage. Our custom data mining applications access this database from a grid of 15 servers. Application architecture uses a mixture of hibernate, roll-your-own connection pooling in Java, and daemons with dedicated sessions. In all, we typically have 200 sessions but only 3 to 9 are active at any given moment. Individual queries and transactions range from sub-second to 3 hours in duration.
    I’ve run the system with MTS and in dedicated server mode; it runs either way. I have never tried tweaking multiple shared_servers, dispatchers or circuits.
    Right now it seems to run fine with 200 dedicated sessions, but it does gobble up a lot of unused PGA memory for the inactive sessions.
    In our situation, what is the best configuration, MTS, or shared, or dedicated, and why?

    Mark, I think that physically a shared server process is no different than a dedicated server process in Oracle on Windows - both are threads in the oracle.exe process image.
    The only real difference is that one deals directly with the client, and the other with a virtual circuit.
    This then raises the question about the PGA and UGA. As the thread runs in the oracle.exe space, it has direct access to, and uses, the data segment (DS) of oracle. The PGA is likely a dynamic memory allocation - so too the UGA for a dedicated thread, while a shared thread will use the SGA instead (for the UGA).
    Now assuming that my speculation is not far of, there are very little overheads between dedicated and shared server threads on Oracle in Windows - except for the dedicated servers being more and thus more PGAs given the nature of these threads versus shared server threads.
    This is unlike Unix where there is a large physical difference as each process (dedicated or shared) has data segment and code segment. The resource footprint for a process is a lot bigger.
    A concern of mine... Windows is excellent at running threads.. it really strains running lots of physical processes (unlike Unix/Linux). But as threads share the same code and data segments, a single thread running into a severe bug can potentially corrupt the entire physical process image, crashing all other threads in it. At least, this has been my experience doing Windows server development.
    Would be nice to read a technical paper on just how Oracle implements their shared and dedicated server models on the Win32 API.

  • MTS (shared server) problem

    Hi,
    when i use MTS (shared server) architecture, after a while,
    i see 1500 sessions in v$session, but, about 4000 oracle processes in the operating system which hits the os user max process limit and get the following error.
    how can that be? 1500 sessions in v$session, and, 4000 oracle processes in OS.
    i can not reproduce the same case since this is production.
    in test, i tried to reproduce the case but even though, i create mts sessions once in a second, after 1 hour, no problem.
    shared_server=10
    max_shared_server=50
    max_dispatchers=2 (each with 250 connections)
    thanks,
    ORA-27300: OS system dependent operation:fork failed with status: 11
    ORA-27301: OS failure message: Resource temporarily unavailable
    ORA-27302: failure occurred at: skgpspawn3

    Afew things to check, firstly are the connections actually using shared server? check ther server column in v$session session may show as dedicated in which case th eocnnection is requesting a dedicated server and is ignoring the shared server configuration.
    next check v$process have you got 4000 processes listed there? if so you can connect them back to the sessions e.g.
    select vs.sid,vs.serial#,vs.username,vp.SPID,vp.PROGRAM
    from v$session vs,
    v$process vp
    where vs.PADDR=vp.ADDR

    Please post me Helpful LinksYOu need to understand that ... as far as the database is concerned ... it's not an either/or situation between dedicated and shared server. Setting shared server parameter like DISPATCHERS simply allows the database to handle shared server connections. But it is up to the client to specify which method it wants, and the database will always allow dedicated server connections.
