Defective headphone jack on V Plus or Vision:

I have a Zen Micro, slightly more than 2 years old (it's a replacement for one that had a defecti've headphone jack and was replaced during the initial warranty period). This one has headphone jack problems that are becoming really annoying. I'm wondering if I'm at the point where I should think about a new player. Other than the jack problem, I really like the Micro. I've read several threads about other Creative players that also have/had the same problem in the past, but I haven't seen anything about either the V Plus or the Vision: M. Has the headphone jack been a problem with either of these newer products?

IMac OS Mavericks Headphone Jack quit working.

Was using iTunes late night and next am output to external speakers wouldn't work.
Connected ear buds and sound is very low, can hardly hear it. The ear buds and external speakers work fine with my iPod and Ipad.

Headphone jack quit working for a while

I plugged in the headphones, and the sound came out the speaker on the bottom of the phone. I tried another set of headphones, same thing. I powered off/on. Same thing.
Went and did something else for about an hour, came back, now the headphones work.

Zen Vision M Headphone Jack - different desi

I own a Zen Micro and am dealing with the headphone jack issue. Are the headphone jacks more secure on the Zen Vision M? I am considering purchasing one.

That sounds more like a motherboard issue. You could replace the board. Ebay is good source for parts.

Zen V / Zen V Plus headphone jack prob

Its been out a while, and no problems yet. The only models that have a headphone jack problem are the old (G: with the "back" for the back button) zen micros. No other player have had serious problems since.

Hi everyone-
I own a Zen Micro which I got for Christmas- like most here, it seems- and which was one of the limited-edition first run. Like many others who got this first-generation Micro, my headphone jack has come loose and quickly turned my Micro into an expensi've paperweight. I was told I would have to pay $40 to get the problem fixed.
I then came to these boards and realized that the problem was NOT unique to my player, but seemed to effect almost the entire product line. I saw much rumbling about class action litigation, although no one seemed to be a lawyer. I'm not paying $40 and going without my player to fix a design defect; other companies I've had quality problems with (Gateway, for example) shipped new parts to me at their cost and then gave me a week to ship the old one back in the box they provided so that I never went without my computer and didn't have to spend any money at all, even out-of-pocket.
I'm not a lawyer either; I should make that clear up front. I'm a law student in my last term, and I'll be a lawyer in six months. What this means is that I know enough to get the ball rolling here, and I also know of a law professor at my school- the Uni'versity of Michigan- who has done extensi've research on class action litigation and litigated several cases on the plaintiff's side himself. If the suit looks viable, I can approach him about signing on as the attorney, and he knows his business. Alternati'vely, we could pass off the suit to Girard Gibbs, the firm that successfully forced Apple into settlement over the iPod battery issue.
I think we have several legal recourses here, although I'm still doing some preliminary research. If it looks like I can put together a claim that will at least survi've summary judgment- and I'm pretty confident I can under at least two theories of liability- then I might just go ahead and file it pro se and then file for joinder or class certification later.
I expect Creative's response to this is going to be that they disclaimed all implied warranties in their warranty, including the warranty of merchantability. This obviously won't work in many jurisdictions that forbid manufacturers from contracting out of this warranty. It also has practical problems.
For those unfamiliar with the term, the implied warranty of merchantability is a general warranty that you offer buyers when you are a dealer of a certain kind of product which states that this product will function at least as well as the average kind of product on the market for its purpose. So here, Creative's implied warranty is that their MP3 players should perform as MP3 players at least as well as others. That is, the Micro should work about the same as the mini iPod; they won't be exactly the same, but the point is that they'll at least both play MP3s.
The practical problem I mentioned is that by arguing that their warranty disclaims this implied warranty of merchantability, Creative is basically telling consumers that they don't guarantee that their products will work AT ALL.
What I need to know from YOU is the following, if you would be interested in signing on as a plaintiff.
) What kind of player you have that has this problem.
2) When you purchased it.
3) How long after you purchased it that the problem started.
4) Where you li've (right now, please only respond to this is you're in the USA and bought it here)
5) Where you bought it.
6) If anyone from Creative indicated that Creative knew about this problem.
Please do NOT use this thread to talk about other problems with the Micro or other players; I'm only interested right now in headphone jack problems with ANY player.
I may add more to this as I do more research. I'd also say that if you've been dealing with Creative on this issue and are interested in pursuing litigation either on your own or as part of a class, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. I'd say go for email help instead of phone when possible, because this will provide written documentation of Creative's policies. If you have the know-how and ability to backup the threads on this board about this problem, please do that as well. Creative may eventually delete these posts, including this one, so if that happens we need to be prepared.
I'm hoping none of this is necessary, that Creative will issue a recall and offer free repairs and some sort of compensation to its customers as some sort of good-faith gesture on its part. But given Creative's slow response, this may be the thing that finally brings their quality control problems to light.

The Zen Micro is a very popular MP3 player. Statistics on the percentage of Zen Micros that have had a headphone jack problem are not publicly available. The percentage might be very small. We also don't have any idea about how the users who have had a problem treated their players. My guess is that on average they probably treated their players quite roughly. When you come to this forum you will see that a large percentage of those who are posting are having problems. When you visit a hospital, you will see that a very large percentage of those who have been admitted are quite ill. One shouldn't reach the conclusion that most humans are very ill after visiting a hospital.
For everyones attention: one of those links does not work, plus not one of the iPods are new ones. One of them is a third generation iPod - the rest seem to be second generation - one is possibly a first generation iPod. Come one, dude - you can find better links than that!

TS4113 Is there a terminal or other type of workaround to allow sound to come from the HDMI and headphone jack at the same time?

I have a late 2012 Mini, running 10.8.2. I have a set of powered speakers plugged into the headphone jack. My TV is running on a direct HDMI connection. I can only stream sound through HDMI, or even select it as an output, if I unplug my headphone speaker plug. Apple's knowlege base says this is the case. I am looking for a way to have both plugged in all the time, and have the sound mirrored to both.
I use the speakers for itunes music, system sounds, skype, etc.. The HDMI sound is for steaming content to the TV. I don't want to have to reach around behind the computer and unplug/plug each time I switch, for a multitude of reasons. Any ideas out there? Google wasn't getting me very far. Maybe a terminal solution of some sort? Thanks in advance.

it seems that m1r3k found a very good workaround, at least for the Mid 2010 Mac mini models (that I'm using right now). I don't know if it works also with more recent Mac mini models.

Open Audio MIDI Setup.app in /Applications/Utility, click the + (plus) button in the bottom left corner of the window and choose "Create Multi-Output Device". In the new device settings tick the HDMI "Use" checkbox and you're done. Simply go to the usual System Preferences Audio panel and choose the newly created device, without the need to unplug the audio cable from the back of the Mac mini. You can also name the new audio device as you want.
NOTE:
This is only a workaround for a deliberate choice made by Apple on OS X Lion 10.7.2 and beyond:

Headphone Jack sticking and screen turning on

I bought a sim free palm pre (non plus!) a month or so ago from handtec UK and now the sound intermittently doesnt work. its like the headphone jack is sticking which ive seen is common but when there is no sound the screen randomly turns on like i pressed the unlock button. So i think its a dodgy connection on the slider because when i blow in the slider/headphone jack it fixes it for a bit then it comes back, which is annoying because it drains my battery quicker.
Any ideas?
P.S i spoke to someone on palm live chat and they said to run webos doctor, (i dont think its software tho) but i thought id try it anyway so when i entered the serial number it said its invalid!!!!! Then i discovered theres another sticker underneath the sticker with the imei and serial numbers on the box which says its a movistar phone. When i tried this serial number to download webos doctor it said for movistar and i dont want to use this incase it locks the phone to that network :/
So im stuck as to whether to try and get the phone fixed or see if theres an easy fix but i just dont know what to do

I think you are correct, I would think it is the headphone jack connector. You can try some compressed air in a can in the jack hole, or maybe a little contact cleaner that has some very light lubricant in it to try and free up the micro switch in the connector. The exercise the switch by quickly inserting and removing the headphone jacks plug. I you do not have any luck wit this process you would be forced to get a repair or replacement.

Creative MP3 players still RELIABLE??? (headphone jack/software) USERS OF NEW PRODUCT NEED

after BOTH of my zen micro has headphone jack problem and the error filled software for the zen micro, i doubt about it's reliability, i want to ask the people who use creative's new players (mp3/photo/video) to tell me what they experienced. because i never like Apple, but they are much more durable to use. They can withstand so much physical dmg and works perfectly, on the other hand, the smallest vibration/movement caused the zen micro headphone jack's metal pieces to go out of place(have no contact on the male connector for headphones)

i've owned 3 creative and i only had problems with the zen xtra and thats one of their older players, with the zen micro and vision m i havent had any problems including the headphone jack, and i put my players through some rough times so i think their improvin upon the quality/durability overall

It is still under warranty and there was no damage to it from anyone. The headphone jack is faulty and it is a hardware problem not user damage

Bit of a problem (Headphone Jack and Scre

I just got a Zen Micro not too long ago and I love it. But recently I was having issues with the headphone jack. I was only getting sound in one ear and I thought at first it was an issue with the headphones, but it also happened with the new headphones that came with the player. I'm uncertain what the issues with the headphone jack are and I am curious if this warrants repair or not.
In addition to that during a recent roadtrip my screen got scratched pretty badly. I'm assuming they would repair this (all it appears to need is a new faceplate) but I'm curious if anyone could give me a ballpark estimate on how much that would cost.
Finally if there is a problem with the headphone jack, I'm assuming they would just replace it with a different one (At least that's the idea I've gotten from other topics) but I'm not sure if the headphone jack problem and the scratched screen (one being a defect, the other caused by me somewhat) would conflict with the warranty.

Okay, thanks for that info. I was wondering if the headphone jack issue applied to any problem with it or if there was a more specific thing that they would replace the unit for. I had noticed that alot of people had different problems with the headphone jack, many much more severe than mine, so I wasn't certain if they would take care of it.
As well, just to confirm, they replace the whole unit for that problem, right? So all of my music that I have on it will be lost I assume...

Imac headphone jack stopped working!?

i have a 2.4GHz intel imac that is only about 6 months old and i had a headphone extender plugged into the headphone jack outlet on the back that i never touched. i unplugged it yesterday and re-plugged it in today and now the sound is not going through the headphone jack at all. i've tried using different sets of headphones without the extender, i've unplugged and plugged all cords, re-booted, etc. to no avail. i'm really frustrated as this computer is basically brand new! and i'm guessing to replace the jack is going to be a big job. has anyone else experienced this or know of a way to fix? i haven't run any disc utility programs...

I just bought a brand new 24" iMac and the jack worked out of the box for about 1 week. Then yesterday it stopped working. I did some research in these discussion threads and found one about using a secondary cable between the external speakers and the imac. So, I plugged in my Monster cable splitter for sharing your headphone jack with a friend. The connection was more secure than when the speakers alone were plugged directly in. The Monster cable had not static or wiggle. Everything seems to be working again. So it appears to be a defect in the headphone jack tolerance in the iMac. I've tested the external speakers in 2 different ipods and it works fine with both of them.
It ***** to have your new computer not work well out of the box, so if you truly want a mint machine, contact Applecare and see about replacement. Or you can try this easy fix. We'll see how long it holds up!

Is it dangerous to look at the red light in the headphone jack?

I recently purchased an early 2009 model white MacBook. Today I was installing Windows on it and I noticed a red light coming out of the headphone jack. I thought there must be an LED in there to help you locate it in the dark. I was curious about it so I crouched down next to the computer and looked inside the jack to see what the deal was.
At the time I didn't know that there is such a thing as an optical audio jack. Obviously I now know that's what the red light was all about. Now I'm wondering if looking at that light could have injured my eyes. Is it a laser, an LED, or something else? Does anyone know how dangerous it is to look at that light? I looked directly at it from close range for perhaps 3-10 seconds, with eyeglasses on. I don't remember it seeming uncomfortable to look at.

Yes, my understanding is that that light should only ever come on when there is a Toslink mini-plug adapter inserted into it (or at least a regular 3.5mm analog plug). However, like you said, I've seen a number of posts on the internet about that switch that turns on the digital output (red light) getting stuck in the on position (even without having plugged in a Toslink adapter). My understanding is that in my case the light came on because I was in the process of installing Windows and the driver for the audio hardware hadn't been installed yet.

I don't recall having a reaction that it was uncomfortably bright and then having to force myself to look at it. If it had seemed uncomfortable I don't think I would have continued to look at it.
I don't think I actually became concerned about it until I found out that the light is for digital audio output and wondered if it is a laser. Not that I recommend looking right at a bright LED either. But I wasn't expecting a bright LED either (let alone a laser) -- like I said, my first thought was that there must be an LED inside to make the jack easy to locate in the dark (I was in a darkened room at the time.
