Degauss DLT?

I am getting lots of errors on a DLT tape that I had degaussed. I was able to write to it using NetBackup but it failed in verify. Every time I try to access this tape now, it gives these errors and cleans itself regardless of which drive I use.
Should I not degauss DLT tapes?

Hi -
Did you get this solved? I use a Quantum DLT 4000 and have a problem. I reinstalled my OS on a new drive but don't have current drivers for the card and drive.
Do you know if I need drivers for both or just one?
Thanks
Dave

  • How can I connect a DLT-IV Tape drive with SCSI interface to Quad G5?

I have had no problems with my "Quantum equivalent La Cie DLT-IV Tape drive" on OSX connected to the G4 Quicksilver using an Adaptec 2930CU PCI card - but I can't move that to the G5 as it has to be PCI-Express cards as far as I can tell.
Adaptec pre-sales support inform me that Adaptec have no Mac support in their current product range.
Has anyone found a solution to this connection requirement that will work with Retrospect and DVD StudioPro?
If there is a workable solution which is no longer available to buy - I would still be interested in knowing so I could scour ebay for it.
    TIA,
    Richard

    Hi Richard;
If you go to ATTO, they are offering a ExpressPCI PSC which include a SCSI bus on sale for $24.11.

  • System no longer "sees" my DLT drive - Adaptec card seems to be fine though

Hoping for help before going the route of purchasing new cable, etc.
I need to format a dual layer job for replication onto my DLT 7000 tape drive but DVD SP3 says the drive is not connected. I un/re-plugged all, made sure to start DLT first and let it go through all it's motions but still no good. System profiler sees the Adaptec 2930CU card and when I connect to my Epson scanner (different cable needed than the DLT drive) it works fine. So I have little reason to doubt the Adaptec card and it always worked before with this DLT drive. I had to loan out the Adaptec card to a partner while I was out of town a few months ago and we have not had any jobs requiring replication since then.
The system profiler does not see the DLT and obviously nor does DVD SP3 at this time. Is there some chance a setting/extension was thrown off by disconnecting the card and putting it in another G4 then returning it in it's former slot.
Thank you in advance for any support.

    Hal,
Sorry for the delay to get back to this post.
    Your help is appreciated.
I have made sure after unplugging all concerned components to start the DLT drive first before turning on the G4.
I have removed the Adaptec card from my computer and given it along with the DLT drive and cable to my partner (as it last worked on his G4 - while I was on vacation/business travel). He reports the same problem. We will be purchasing a new cable today in hopes that will resolve the problem.
I hope it is not firmware/software related as that type of problem is usually a recipe for getting to know how poorly supported that aspect of troubleshooting can be when it comes to vendor volleyball.

  • SOLUTION for all DLT 4000 users

If you have had, like me, troubles in getting your DLT 4000 work with DVDSP 4, here is the solution.
The problem is DVDSP continously asking for the DLT to be inserted, also when you've already put it in.
The DLT 4000 is too old and too slow for your Mac, so the drive doesn't have the time to intialize the tape and something like a "timeout" occurs.
To solve, you need to FREEZE DSPro, do this or use some freezing shareware program:
    1. Launch a Terminal window.
    2. Change directory to the DVDSP folder, by typing the following:
    cd /Applications/DVD\ Studio\ Pro/DVD\ Studio\ Pro.app/Contents/MacOS
(note that the backslashes are required in Unix to "escape" spaces in file
    and directory names)
    3. Start the DVDSP application from the Unix shell, by typing the following:
    ./DVD\ Studio\ Pro
    4. DVDSP will run normally, but when you get to the point where it wants you
to insert the second tape, click in the Terminal window, and press
"control-Z" to suspend DVDSP. If you did it right, you will see the word
    "Suspended" in the Terminal window.
    5. Insert the second DLT tape, and wait for the drive to become ready (no
more whirring noises or blinking lights).
    6. When you are ready, type "fg" into the Terminal window, and press
[Return]. This will bring DVDSP process back into the shell's "foreground,"
and will begin running again, and start writing to the drive. Life is good
    again.
Do not close the Terminal window or type anything else into it until after
you are finished, and exit DVDSP normally.
    I've found this hint here:
    http://www.dvdafteredit.com/?q=node/198
I can guarantee that this works.
I've made a lot of DLT with this technique.
    Bye

    Gentlemen,
It is highly recommended that, mimimally, a DLT 8000 and DLT Type IV tape be used for Image submission to replicators.
Writing on the slow DLT4000 is driving your replicator nuts, and some will complain to your clients; as it takes forever to extract the Image in comparison, especially with DVD-9's.
Excellent shape DLT 8000's, about 4 times faster than DLT4000's, can be found on eBay for under $200.

  • Can I connect an external DLT Tape drive to the SCSI connector on an E450

Hi... totally new to SPARC. I have inherited an E450. It appears to have the 8 bay option. I have 6 scsi disk drives installed in slots 0 through 5. Internally, there is one ultra scsi controller in slot 2 and two internal cables running from the top of the card, one for each channel. I do have an extra ultra pci scsi card, but when I plugged it into a pci slot, the system would not boot. Bottom line, can I connect an external DLT drive to either Channel A or Channel B at the rear of the Unit and not intefere with other SCSI devices (i.e. the disk drives). Currently, the DLT is set to SCSI ID 8. If this isn't recommended, how do I install the secondary ultra scsi card and have the system recognize it ? Note that the Hard drives have been wiped and I WILL be loading Solaris 10, but have not yet. I wanted to make sure all of the hardware worked first. The second PCI Scsi controller I have is an Adaptec 39160, and I'm assumming it will work IF needed. I'd prefer not to use it if necessary.... ANY HELP is sincerely appreciated ! Thanks, Randy

I suggest you leave the current internal connections just as they are.
You never know when you'll need to add more disks.
That Adaptec card is for PC's.
It won't work in a Sun SPARC-based system.
What sort of SCSI interface is required for that tape device?
Single-Ended? High Voltage Differential? Low Voltage Differential?
You need a card that matches that interface type if you hope it to "drive" the tape.
One quick way to tell, is to examine the chassis of the tape peripheral
and find the small icon that should be at the port for the SCSI cable.
For example, Sun's 375-0005 card is Single-ended and is what you already have inside your E450.
Sun's 375-0006 is a HVD card and would be correct for A1000 and D1000 arrays or L7 or L25 tape libraries.
Sun's 375-3057 card is LVD and would be appropriate for Sun's D2 array.
The manual for that 375-3057 card happens to have pictures of the SCSI icons I just mentioned.
See page 35 in that manual.
    http://192.18.109.11/816-2156-11/816-2156-11.pdf
Once you confirm what's needed by the tape peripheral, we may be able to suggest how to connect it properly.

  • DLT writes perfect, but won`t read!

    Hi,
because of one stupid replicator, who as a problem to take a burned DVD-9 master, we had to pack out our old DLT-Tape (which was dead), bought a new one, which writes faster than anything else which I have previously seen (Quantum DLT V 4) - but won´t read the data on the just written tapes.
It doesn´t matter if I write it in any DDP or CMF format. Any suggestions? Our G5`s won´t recognize the tape, so we updatet a G4 with FCP Production Suite and OS 10.4.9
Thank you and a nicer weekend than mine

  • Did anyone manage to read DLT with Ratoc FR1SX?

    Hi guys.
This week I got the Ratoc Firewire to SCSI adapter and hooked up my DLT4000 machine.
DVD SP (and every other relavant application I tried) worked perfectly to write the tapes with this adapter. Even dual layer projects, with the historically traumatic tape switching moment.
However, none of the applications (including DVD SP) could read back from the DLT tapes. The error messages were all different. But it doesn't work. And reading DLT doesn't work either when booting in Win XP.
From a search I just did, apparently nobody here ever got the Ratoc adapter to read DLT (bad, but not the end of the world, considering that some other authoring apps can write but don't have an option to read DLT!).
I wonder if the FR1SX configuration utility has some obscure checkbox or setting that will make it able to read DLT? Perhaps somebody found this magical setting?
Message was edited by: Adolfo Rozenfeld

    Hi,
it's very interesting that the Ratoc works with your setup, which version of DVDSP are you running?
I am planning a similar setup (I have a Quantum 4000 too) and was wrecking my brains trying to fit in the DLT drive. If your DVDSP is v.4.x it would be great news. Have you had your DLT tape tested by the replication plant to make sure it is written ok?
    Please let me know.
PS. Sorry I can't help with your reading-back issue, but does it really matter? Being able to write/format to DLT reliably without a SCSI card is alone an achievement!

  • Spontaneous degaussing while I´m working

    Spontaneous degaussing while I´m working.
As far as I know degaussing happens everytime
    I turn on the eMac.
But from time to time mine makes a noise
similar to a magnetic turn off (like when
you turn on the home TV), and display
    diminished in voltage, (I suppose),
and then everything is normal again.
It happens when I´m working and some days ago
just five minutes after turning on,
the thing occurred two times in less than two minutes.
    Any help, please?
    Thanks in advance.

That doesn't sound good, I'm afraid. Is there any evidence that other electric devices nearby are also displaying evidence of briefly diminished power/brightness? If the root cause is a noisy power line feed to your place, an Uninterruptible Power Supply (e.g., BackUPS line from APC) would smooth out voltage fluctuations. I don't know if the Apple Hardware Test display test would pick up any degradation in the degaussing circuitry, although that seems unlikely.

  • Can you enable CSS using Encore to write DLT with CSS?

    re: CSS Copy Protection
I'm posting to find out if Encore can write a DVD master with CSS 'enabled' with the CSS keys turned on for replication mastering.
It's as easy as clicking a radio button in Apple's DVD Studio Pro to write a DLT tape master with CSS enabled. We submit the DLT tape master with CSS 'enabled' to replication mastering dept. that then 'activates' the CSS keys to create a glass master and stamper with CSS copy protection. All DVD's pressed from a CSS enabled & activated stamper carry CSS copy protection on each DVD disc.
    Thank you.
    Brian alan

Yes, Encore supports CSS flags for mastering to DLT for replication.

  • DLT 8000 problem with DVD SP 4.1.2

Every once in a while we will create a DLT for a client who authored their project in DVD SP. We don't use DVD SP daily for authoring, we use Spruce Maestro. But since we have the system, we do occasionally do this kind of thing. We've never had any problems, but today something new has come up and I'm stumped:
The setup is a Dual 2GHZ G5 with an ATTO UL4D card installed. We have this connected to a RAID normally. When we get one of these jobs, we shut down the RAID, disconnect both SCSI cables from it, and connect one to the DLT 8000 that we normally have on our Windows-based Spruce Premaster machine. We use the same terminator that we use on the RAID. This has always worked flawlessly.
Today, I did all of that, and loaded up the client project to write to tape. DVD SP goes from "Insert Tape" to "Waiting for Device" when I insert the tape, so it's clearly communicating at some level. The mac sees that the DLT drive is there in both DVD SP and the System Profiler, so no problems there. I've tried both SCSI channels, I've tried multiple terminators. Every time the same thing happens - the tape goes through its normal loading procedure, then pauses, then rewinds and gives me the green "Ok to remove tape" light. DVD Studio Pro then tells me that there's no drive there.
The drive is definitely good. We just used it Thursday to output a DVD-9 on the PC, and like I said, we've switched this back and forth for years between these machines with no problems.
    Any ideas?

Sorry - just realized that i mis-typed the version number. it's actually 4.2.1, not 4.1.2.
    Also - a few updates:
    1) we've determined that this is not a hardware issue. We are able to successfully write other DVD SP projects to the drive, but not this one.
    2) We tossed the .LAY and .layout files, thinking maybe they were corrupt. But this didn't fix the problem. It still fails in the same way.
Any idea as to what might cause this?

  • Best DLT for Xsan backup

I need to back up the 5+ TB of my Xsan. I know the best way of doing this is DLT tape backup. Can anyone recommend a system/brand of DLT backup from personal experience?
    Thank you in advance.
    DKG

Right now, I am using a Overland Neo2000 with 2 LTO-3 drives for backing up my 5 TB Xsan.
AFAIK, this a good solution, depending on the average size of your data files. We're getting about 120 MB/sec from our 3.4 TB Xsan volume that hosts big data files and about 80 MB/sec from our "office" Xsan volume.
A full backup runs about 17 hrs, which is not the fault of the LTO-3 drives, but is due to the fact that Xsan does not work too well for office data. Maybe Xsan 2 will boost things in this regard.
    Cheers,
    Budy

  • Copy Protection without DLT - Link does not work

I'm trying to find out how I can protect DVDS with Encore. Or if anyone knows of reasonably priced software to do this. I see there is a link to something called, Protection without DLT, but the link does not work....
    Help!
    Jessica

CSS keys are only licensed to replicators, player manufacturers, etc. so it is highly unlikely that there will ever be a free solution for creating encrypted DVDs.
CSS encryption is worthless, by the way.  It has been compromised for over a decade.  There are more complex copy-protection methods available that work by creating malformed structures on the DVD meant to confuse "ripping" programs.  However, they are an additional cost from third parties and, more significantly, they run the risk of making your product incompatible with older players or with some computer DVD-ROM drives or software players.
Your replication facility can tell you which additional copy-protection methods they offer and what their cost is.

  • Should I output to DLT using DDP 2.0 or 2.10 ?

Should I output to DLT using DDP 2.0 or 2.10 ?

This is a question for your replicator, rather than us here. Which can they handle best? I have sent DDP 2.0 and had problems, but replaced the tape with DDP 2.10 and it was fine. I was also asked to use CMF on one occasion - it all depends on what your bureau is happiest with, although I can't imagine they will struggle with any of the three options from DVDSP.
