Deleted files do not go into the trash

When I delete a file from the mac mini hd, it just asks if I want to permanently delete it and then it's gone. I've tried the terminal commands in this post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11486270&#11486270 but nothing works, please help.

  • My deleted files do not go into the Trash Folder

Deleted emails do not go into the Trash Folder even though my configurations are correct and I have selected Trash Folder for my deleted files. Is something wrong with TB? This just started happening recently.
Also the auto-fill is not working correctly. When I start to type an email addr in Compose, non-related email addrs appear. I know that TB uses the 'within' range as opposed to 'starts with' but that still does not explain my problem. If I enter 'h' into the To: field, email addresses that do not contain the letter h anywhere (first name, last name, email addr, etc.) appear.
    Please help.

  • I can't send deleted files from i movie to the trash and delete them.

I can't delete files. I bought a Lacie big quadra 4T and allmy project are saved there (mode raid1). When I’m trying to delete files theydoesn’t go to the trash bin but they are not longer in I movie. Apparently  they are still in the hard drive using space. How can I delete them or send them to the trash bin of my Macbook Pro?

Okay I had the same problem but I figured it out.  When you go to choose file, all the links are greyed out.  Use two fingers simulatiously and click down on the file you want, then choose "quick look" from the option menu.  This will open a preview of your document and make the open button usable.  Close the preview, and then select the open button.
The site I was trying to use says it only supports IE, so maybe that is what causes the problem.
    Hope it works for you!

  • When I move items to the trash they do not go into the trash, they are deleted entirely

Heading above pretty much explains it.  Sometime recently, my trash started acting differently - when I attempt to move an item into the trash, I get a message asking if I want to delete the item permanently.  I am sure this is a fairly new phenomenon.

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and verify that you are able to write to this folder in the Sharing & Permissions section of the Get Info window, and that it isn't locked; if it is already set this way and you get that error, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    mkdir ~/.Trash
If you get a message stating that the folder exists, run the following:
    sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
    chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
The first command in the second set will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while it is being typed. In either case, click on the Finder icon in the Dock with the Control and Option keys pressed, and relaunch it.

  • Deleted files don't go to the trash

Lately whenever I delete any files by moving them to the trash, the following window appears:
After entering the Name & Password, the files completely disappear instead of going to the Trash.
I don't know how to fix the problem. Please help me.
    Cheers!

Hey Catherine, hopefully you were able to fix your issue! In the future, especially with closed issues such as this one, I'd reccomend creating a new thread for your issue as you'll get a more prompt response and attention to your issue specifically!
For both Catherine and those coming through Google, you can change the permissions by copying/pasting the following commands into terminal (go -> utilities -> terminal).
    mkdir ~/.Trash
If your system informs you that the "file exists", you can ignore in and move on.
Next copy and paste the following line, followed by the Return key:
    sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
This time Terminal will ask for your Admin password -the one you log into your mac with. As an FYI, this won't appear as if anything is typing, I promise, it is. It's going to be black text on a black background for security reasons, but you won't see the asterisks you're used to. Type slow, and hit return.
Next copy and paste the following:
    chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
Essentially what we're doing with these commands are:
    1) Making sure that the ~/.Trash directory even exists
    2) Changing the "owner" of that directory
    3) Setting permission level for it.
It should end up looking like this:
Last login: Tue Apr 08 05:00:53 on ttys000
    YourComputerNameHere:~ yourusername$ mkdir ~/.Trash
    mkdir: /Users/yourusername/.Trash: File exists
    YourComputerNameHere:~ yourusername$ sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
Password:    (type your password then press Return)
    YourComputerNameHere:~ yourusername$ chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
    YourComputerNameHere:~ yourusername$

  • Where does KN 09 store .mov files when these files were not copied into the KN document?

I saved a 'test' KN document without copying the movie files into the document.  The size of the document was less than half the size of the actual movie files themselves, so I figured they were not embedded into the document.  I then played the KN slideshow on a different drive that did not contain the actual movie files.
But it played!!  How can that be?!
I had created the document leaving the box for copying audio and video unchecked!  It was saved as a package.  By the way what is a "package" anyway?
Can anyone shed light on this dilemma?
    Thank you,
    Howard
PS - the reason this is important is that I want to edit my real Keynote document as it gets bigger without the constant spinning color beachball appearing everytime I right clickk or edit.   This doc is 9GB already and will get a lot larger.  If I can edit without the beachball appearing by saving as a package without embedding the video that would be great!
My other option is just to leave the videos in a separate folder and then click on them at the appropriated moment.  That is what the Apple tech support guy told me is what lots of Apple people do when presenting Keynotes in their stores.
    Thanks again.

I decided to try double-clicking one of the files in my library, whereupon iTunes told me that it couldn't find the file. I clicked the button to find the file myself, and was pleased when the dialog box opened up in the right folder.
This made sense, as iTunes knew where the file should have been, so offered that folder as a starting point.
I then tried another file (from a different album), and iTunes offered me the same folder as before. This was logical, as most Windows applications remember which folder you last chose. I navigated to the correct folder for this file, chose the file and closed the dialog.
I then tried another file in the second album, and guess what? iTunes offered me the very first folder again! No, it didn't remember my last folder.
So now if I want to tell iTunes where the files are, I have to double-click each of the 100 files that it's lost, then click the button to say I'll find the file, then navigate away from the wrong folder to the one that it should have remembered from the previous time, and then choose the folder.

  • Deleted files keep coming back into the / directory

Tried both finder and cli deleting some files erroniously placed in / but they are back after I startup or re-boot.
Also, my desktop settings will sometimes go back to a previous setting. Location is set to automatic at home I get Black and white desktop and at home I get Aqua. I imagine that the os sets this by remembering setting based on dhcp server response, but I'm not sure.
    Please explain,
    Reece

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore is not, in itself, a solution.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • Deleted files do not end up in trash bin

When I delete a file, it does not end up in the trash bin but it is directly deleted from the computer. I get a warning message: 'file will be immediately deleted. Do you want to proceed'. Whe choosing yes, the file is deleted - the trash bin remains empty. When choosing no, the file just stays where it is.
This problem suddenly occured a few days ago, I don't understand

Hi Paul, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Choose your Home folder and "Get Info" (command-i). Under "Ownership & Permissions" be sure you have "read & write" privileges. Under "Details", be sure you are the owner.

  • Deleted mail does not appear in the trash can

When I delete mail from my inbox I can't see it on the Trash "On My Mac". I have set the trash settings to delete everything after one week. Does anyone know why this is happening or how I might be able to fix it.
    Thanks

On the Mac without an account named Trash mailbox for the POP account under Trash in the Mailboxes drawer, is "Move deleted messages to a separate folder" selected under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences?
If so, the account's Trash mailbox is located in the account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) at Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder > Deleted Messages.mbox folder.
Not at Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes.
The Deleted Messages.mbox folder within the Mailboxes folder represents the "On My Mac" named Trash mailbox under Trash in the mailboxes drawer.

  • How do I "delete" files that I emptied from the trash but not securely deleted

just dont want to waste memory

They are gone. Securely deleting a file or files in no way affects memory. It doesn't affect disk storage space either. I merely makes it more difficult for someone to recover data from a hard drive.

  • My files are not opening into the right program now

After updating to Adobe CC 2014 on all my applications, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, my computer is not recongizing the proper program to open an ai, psd or jpg file into. I keep try to set my defaults using the Windows Explorer settings, but when I try to add Photoshop.exe as my default for a .jpg file, it doesn't add it as a valid option.
Any ideas on how to fix this? It's really broken my work flow.

Delete existing file associations before trying to "fix" them. You are simply suffering from context handler overflow, meaning there's too many actions associated with specific file types and Windows can't add more.

  • Non-image files are not copied to the Backup Location

I'm on Aperture 3.0.3... I just noticed that non-image files (e.g., WAV files) are not copied into the Backup Location, although they are copied into the main folder location during an import. Does anyone else see this behavior?

    Shawnsat,
Yes you can still stream from the host computer, the knowledge base article that describes this is http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305098. If you are attempting to display Photos on Apple TV, they must be synced to the Apple TV, per knowledge base article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305139.

  • Is it possible to retrieve a deleted file that wasn't placed into the Trash can?

I created a new Word document and was going to submit it to a Subversion repository using the Versions application.
However I accidentally deleted it from within Versions. Versions did not place it into the Trash Can after deleting it, and as it was a new document it is not yet under version control and so cannot be retrieved from the repository.
Is there anyway I might be able to retrive it?
(I've asked the same question within the Versions Google support group but posting here while/if I get a response from there. Wondering if there are any OS X specific techniques/tools I can use if Versions doesn't provide the ability).

Did you try to open this file in Word for editing and saved the modified file under the same name?
If that is the case then you should always use Save as to save the file under a different name and in another folder.
If that wasn't the case then you should have kept the file unless other (cleanup or anti-virus) software has removed the file because Firefox wouldn't remove files that weren't saved to temp folder.
