Dell laptop loses signal, shuts down: Network issue?

We have a Dell Latitude laptop running Windows XP connected to an all-Mac Airport network. Despite signal strengths of Good or Very Good, the Dell will drop the wireless connection and totally shut down -- instantaneous power off -- after a few minutes of inactivity when used several rooms away from the AEBS. But if the Dell is placed on the same desk as the AEBS, with an Excellent signal, it stays connected, goes to sleep when inactive, wakes when needed (still connected to the network) -- essentially acts as it should. Is there an explanation for the bad behavior (other than it's a PC)? Is it a network/AEBS issue or a hardware/PC issue?
iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   AirPort Extreme (n)

Let me put it this way: Since wireless networks are designed to work across multiple platforms, is it conceivable or does anyone here have experience with a loss of network signal prompting a computer shutdown? Knowing that would help me determine whether I should be looking for a PC hardware/software problem (and troubleshooting with my company's IT dept) or a Mac network problem (and troubleshooting with my home IT dept -- me).

  • Need help? My laptop overheats and shuts down when up loading

I installed Premier Elements 8 on Vista and finished my first video and when I try to upload through the share option to youtube Before 1/2 way my laptop overheats and shuts down. I have tried several times. I tried pluging laptop directly in to network so I was not uploading wireless. No luck. I also tried turning my screen down so it would make less heat. I dont know what else to try.

What is happening is that the CPU and the HDD's are being stressed more than with most other operations. This is common and can be observed in places like Speedfan and Task Manager. There are a lot of files being written to, and read from. This is especially hard, if one only has a single internal HDD, as it must do so very much, and is being asked to do it all at the same time.
In general, editing Video is about the toughest task that one can ask of a computer. The Export phase is about as tough as editing gets. If one is editing AVCHD footage, the CPU usage goes up even higher and almost exponentially!
What you observe is not a fault of the software, but just how all NLE software must work.
Unfortunately, most laptops are not properly equiped with adequate cooling to begin with. They also usually have a single HDD. That was why I went with an extreme "gaming" laptop to start, and then modified it for NLE work. It works fine, but I had to add the cooling pad, and Speedfan.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

my computer displays grey screen and apple logo for 10 minutes or more during start up and shut down. sometimes it refuses to shut down . this issues started after installing OS lion. what do i do?

I don't think it's exactly an incomplete installation brody, but most likely in-correct permissions somewhere along the line that either happened, or became magnified during the upgrade. Also, it could be corruption as well.
First thing to do, is boot up holding down Shift key to do a safe-boot so we an clean up any corrupted OS caches, after that do another reboot, but go to the Lion recovery, and scan the HD for errors, repair any if you find them, and then try to do a Repair Permissions job.
That should fix the issue, if not, we can start doing a PRAM reset  and SMC for good measure.

  • Ethernet light remains on even when DV7 series laptop has been shut down

    Product: HP Pavilion DV7-7008tx
    OS: Windows 7 64-bit
Issue: When I shut down my laptop and leave the ethernet cable plugged in, the ethernet light stays on. Removing the cable turns the light off, but putting it back in brings the light back on.
Is this meant to happen, or is there a way to stop this?
    Thanks!

Do you have the "Wake on Lan" setup in the BIOs? The feature allows the computer to be woken up my network inputs. You will need to boot into the BIO to turn off this feature. You may be able to disable this feature in Windows 7 as well. Here is a good article on how to disable/enable the Wake on LAN feature: Wake-on-Lan (WOL) for Windows 7 Made Easy!
    Hope this helps!

  • Laptop doesn't shut down completely

Hello,I've got a problem where shutdown, sleep, hibernate orders won't completely put my notebook in peace, the process goes until the screen goes black, and then It's stuck on that with my power button light up, and rest of keyboard indication lights, like WiFi and so.. The problem happened when I replaced my Fan since my old had stopped working properly, I've damaged a cable pin during the process of replugging my laptop but then I fixed it by simply pushing it back at its place, It's positioned right below my touchpad anyhow. Changing OS several time hasn't solved the problem, double checking if the cable was connected properly done. No idea what could be it, but Now I can only hold down my power button everytime I want to shutdown my laptop.

Hi guys! I had the same issue, but I got into a support chat with an HP Technician, the first time it was a temp fix, second time it seems to be working great! Heres how to fi the issue: 1. Go to this link: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html2. Put in your product name or number (Can find this out by doing Esc + fn)3. Click Option 24. Change the top blue bar to Windows 8.15. Install the BIOs driver6. You should be good to go after installing! *I have recommended this on the forums and there is not a BIOs update for Envy users...hopefully HP will come out with one, but pavilion users there is one! So far I have had no issues! If there do seem to be issues I will let you guys know! Please let me know if you run into any issues, I will try to help, also if you see anyone having the same issue please help them this seems to be a HUGE problem.  *UPDATE* Over the last few hours after I got the BIOs update I was checking in to see if it was still working RIGHT after I posted this I checked in, didn't work...sorry if you did the BIOs update thinking it was a perm fix cause its not, I guess we will have to keep going through with this until HP/Microsoft figure out what the hell is wrong, good news is, is that hard shutting down your laptop can maybe corupt an application, it cannot do any OS issues which is a good thing.

  • Windows Vista laptop turn off/shut down loop

I got a windows vista hp pavilion from my grandfather. I have recently wiped it and restored it through the hp program on my computer. Whilst uninstalling microsoft .net framework 3.0, it told me to restart it to be completely uninstalled. Now my laptop is in a loop. It will turn on and the screen that says installing update 3 of 3, load to 99% and shut down. It has been in this cycle for about 2 days now. I have tried force reboot but it just keeps going. Please help!

    Hello Gradof,
Well, you may have to Recover the notebook again if it is trashed, a Reset may stop the horrible looping:
    The Hard Reset:
This method works for a variety of Driver connection and ‘stuck’ program issues.
    Shut down the computer
Disconnect all external devices - everything.
Remove (disconnect / unplug) the AC power
If the notebook contains a removable Battery, remove it
Press and hold power button for at least 30 seconds
    Reinstall the battery,
    Reconnect the AC power cord
    Power on - Log in

    Just in Case:
Recover Windows Vista Operating System Using HP Recovery – Notebooks
    Excerpted from the above file:
If Windows Vista cannot open and if the Recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning properly, you can perform a System Recovery by performing the following procedure:
NOTE:If the RECOVERY or FACTORY_IMAGE partitions on the hard drive have been deleted OR the files in these partitions have been deleted, these steps will not work. You must use recovery discs.
Turn off the computer if it is not already off.
Disconnect and remove all external devices such as printers, USB drives, and memory cards.
Turn on the computer and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly , about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.
On the Welcome to Recovery Manager screen, click Next .
On the Microsoft System Restore screen, select No , and then click Next .
On the System Recovery screen, select Yes , and then click Next to continue the recovery process.
The Recovery Manager gives you the option of backing up your data files. To do so, read Backing up your files .
To continue recovery, select No , and then click Next .
A recovery progress screen opens. Wait while files are restored.
When System Recovery is complete, click Finish .
The computer restarts and continues into Windows setup. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup. Then, turn off the computer, reconnect all peripheral devices, and turn on the computer.
Before using the computer, update and protect it by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the System Recovery.
Reinstall any software applications that were added after purchasing the computer, and replace any files that were backed up.

Indesign CS6 - 8.0 on iMac 10.9.1, I have a few issues that may be connected:
    1. My computer shuts down goes to a black screen then restarts on its own.
    2. My InDesign will crash when I am working and there doesn't seem to be a pattern it just happens sometimes.
    3. I have an InDesign file that all of a sudden now takes 30-40mins to PDF 50 pages, I think there may be an issue with fonts but I am not sure, none of the other files take this long.

Thank you so much for responding Bob, I tried to update but when I tired I get a message "Contact Administrator if you wish to apply updates on your machine, Updates have been suppressed by the administrator...". I actually have admin rights and I called in my IT guy, he could not get it to update. The Application Manager says I have all current updates. Am I suppoes to update using "AdobePatchInstaller"? Is there a manual way?

  • Why does my laptop keep randomly shutting down?

My laptop for the 2nd time has shut down without warning. The battery is not empty and when I charge it it says it is full. Help

Yea. Apple Just released a new update to the SMC on MacBook Pro w/Retina. Im not sure what you compter model was, but it could likely be a overheating problem. Even if you computer is not hot to the touch, the SMC may think that your computer was overheating. So yea.. Just reset your SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow the onscreen instructions and every thing should correct itself. If you still have trouble create another post here and we can help you out!

  • Laptop does not shut down completely after upgrading to Windows 10!!

Ever since I installed Windows 10 64-bit, the PC does not shut down completely. The screen gets blank but the power button is still lit up...Have to manually shut down by holding the power button... Same issue anyone? Any solution or workaround? @HP??

I also have this problem, and have resorted to leaving the computer in Sleep mode when not in use. This is OK as a temporary fix, but is not a permanent solution. This is clearly a problem with HP computers and I would hope HP are aware of the need for urgent action to resolve the problem. I also hope that Microsoft gives them full cooperation. HP and Microsoft, are you listening?

  • My laptop won't shut down?

My MacBook won't shut down.  What can I co?

You could try & press (hold down) the power button for more than 10 seconds to see if that shuts it off.
But first, read the information ahead of an actual SMC reset, and try what you can as a troubleshooting measure here:
There also may be a reset of the System Management Controller that may help a power issue, as it can do several things. Read the article carefully...
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Then, you could later try to start the computer in SafeBoot (shift key held through startup, until you see login screen) then login to your account, and continue. See Disk Utility and choose first aid 'repair disk permissions' on the mac hard drive. Depending on the version of OS X and hardware you have, that may mean using a Recovery version of OS X utilities, and choosing Disk Utility in there, to fully attempt to repair an issue. Perhaps the SMC reset may be enough.
    Hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Odd Shut Down/Restart Issue

I am running a MacBookPro with Leopard, and recently I have been finding that I am unable to shut down or restart the computer without having to hold down the power button. When I tell it to do either command while a program is running, it will quit the one program and just sit there for a while until I get the error message, "Logout has timed out because the application *application name* failed to quit. To try again, quit *application name* and choose Log Out from the Apple menu." When I try it with no applications running, it just quits Finder and eventually I get the error message which says "Logout has timed out because the application Finder failed to quit. To try again, quit Finder and choose Log Out from the Apple menu."
I have run disk utility and did both "Repair Disk Permissions" and "Verify Disk" but both came up with nothing.

I'm having much the same problem. I've tried everything I can think of, including repair attempts from single user mode, from the install CD, and from the GUI. Nothing's turned up as wrong, but there's definitely something wrong with my computer.
I can't seem to find any firmware updates or software updates that would help this problem at all.
Most every time I need to shut down my computer, I have to hard boot it by holding the power button down until it powers off.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated greatly.

  • Shutting down networked computer

    Hello,
I have a G4 Tower (without a monitor/keyboard) connected to my MacBook Pro, and I wish to shut down the G4. I tried selecting the G4 and pressing control eject, but that just promts to shut down the MacBook. Is there a solution for this that does not involve hooking up a monitor or keyboard?
    Thanks.
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If the G4 is connected through FireWire Target Disk mode, control-click it's hard disk in the MacBook's Finder and choose Eject from the menu which appears.
If the G4 is connected through Ethernet, and is set to accept remote Apple events in the Sharing pane of System Preferences, open the Script Editor on the MacBook and enter the following:
tell application "System Events" of machine "G4's IP"
    shut down
    end tell
You will need to know the G4's IP address. Press the Run button after entering it in the first line.

I installed Mavericks today from Mountain Lion. MacBook Pro late 2008, 4GB memory. Now Excel (14.3.9) barely scrolls.  If I load an Excel sheet (filesize: 785KB), it consumes 99% of CPU.   It always worked fine under Mountain Lion and earlier OS's.
