  • GDM and GNOME has died...

Hello! I'm currently posting via a Knoppix Live CD. This is because, after doing a system update yesterday, GDM and GNOME no longer work.
    I mostly received kdemod-4.1 updates.
GDM crashes constantly now and if I just get to a prompt and run
    exec gnome-session
An error message is displayed (can't make out what it is, it goes to fast) and then I'm logged out.
How can I resolve? I currently can't log into ANY desktop environment at all.

Thanks for the response! I've looked at the log, but I'm afraid a large chunk of it means very little to me.
    This is the log:

  • I have an iPhone 5 which has died completely and won't charge.

I have had the phone since January last year. The sleep/power button doesn't work (the worker in the store reckoned I wouldn't be eligable for the replacement service because there a scratch on one corner of the phone). The phone is completely unresponsive even when plugged into the charger. This is the second time this has happened, the first time I took it into  the apple store and the guy managed to fix it but a week and a half later and it has died again. Short of taking a hammer to the phone, what other options do I have?

    Bring it back to Apple

  • HT201263 phone has died

Connect it to your computer and see if it is recognized. If it is Restore it from your backup.

  • Phone has died after 7.1.2 update

I have just updated my phone with the latest software and it has died. I can't turn it on or anything. I have tried resetting it and it is just blank

As in itunes I cannot see how to a) change it to a ring or b) drag across to the right area...
I simply followed the prompts on my iphone 4s and would have expected it to end up as a ring tone.. any help, guidance, advice welcome...

  • Why does FireFox freeze and the only way to unfreeze it is to open the task manager and close the plugin-container.exe file??? It has been happening more and more often and it is getting VERY AGGRAVATING!!!!!

When Firefox does freeze (not responding appears in parentheses in the page tab) I am not able to access any of the webpages (the entire webpage is hidden behind a vaguely white transparent foreground) and more often than not any files I might be downloading are stopped before the entire file has been transferred - which means that I have to start those downloads from the beginning AGAIN. This has been happening for quite some time and I AM SICK AND TIRED OF IT HAPPENING!!
If it continues to happen for much longer I will swear off FireFox FOREVER!!!!! Either a program works or it does not work and lately Firefox has not worked worth a damn...........
The ONLY way to force Firefox to allow me to access it is for me to end the plugin-container.exe file process using Task Manager. Clearing there is a SERIOUS problem here that has not been resolved - why not???

The pluging container opens up unnecessary copies as the cookies/history are cleared, this is a known issue, it might be what you are seeing, and it is hoped to be fixed in some future release of firerox.
There are some hangs affecting some users, with symptoms being high cpu usage, occurring as bookmark changes or syncing is in progress, there is a work around for that.
Firefox hanging as you close it see:

    * [[firefox is already running but is not responding]]

Is there no other option? No magic key combo that brings up a secret menu?

I have recently updated m iPhone 4 which was not used since months. It has to be updated from5.1.4 to iOS 7.0.4 and it has taken more than 15 hours to get started. Plz help me. It took about 5 to 6 hrs to prepare for updating.

I am having this problem.  At first with the new iPhone 5, and then with the iPad 2.  I am not sure why this is happening.
My gut feeling is this is an iO6 issue and here's why -
The problem mainly occurs with apps.  I have about 150 apps, and when I plugged in the phone, iTunes went to sync all of them.  The process would hang up after about 20 - 30 apps were loaded onto the phone. I could tell where about the process hung up because the apps on the phone showed up as "waiting".
Then on the iPad 2 I plugged in to sync and saw there was a huge "Other" component in my storage.  It required me to restore the iPad 2 from backup.  With this restore the same issues occurred - putting the apps back on the iPad would hang up.  The videos on the iPad also got stuck - maybe after about 10 hours of videos transfered iTunes crashed.
My solution has been to soft reset the device, restart Windows, and continue the process until it's complete.  This is remarkably inefficient and time-intensive but everything works with patience.
I have been wondering if others have had these same problems.

  • Qosmio X300 has random 5-10 second freezing and more

I bought my Qosmio X300 in December 2008 and it has been into the authorized repair shop 3 times already. Here is my main problem:
while using programs and/or the internet, the pointing device will freeze. The HDD light is flashing but not solid (but its always like that). Regardless, there is nothing I can seem to do to stop it from freezing. I have followed the advice of tech support and the the authorized tech repair shop and went back to factory install.
Without any added programs installed (other than what came from the factory) it still does this. In one hour it can happen 10-20 times, very frustrating, especially when I am trying to mix music or edit video (which is why i bought it). After spending over 2000$ including an extended warranty, this is really driving me nuts. Even more that the problem cannot seem to be duplicated by the technicians. But I know I am not crazy, it is happening.
Another odd problem which is INCREDIBLY annoying when I am writing an online email is that it will go back a page for no reason. I am not touching anything near the back space and sometimes just the touchpad but not the buttons, but then it goes back and my email is gone gone gone...
    Please help suggest anything...

Try disabling the Wireless LAN in Device Manager. Does it still freeze?
Also try updating the BIOS and Display Driver.
When you type, your palm is touching the Touchpad, causing it to modify your document. To avoid this, you can disable Tapping or 'Tapping during Typing' in the Advanced Touchpad settings.

    Hello Jm23ur,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing performance issues with your device. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities,
    BobbyD

  • Purchased more storage and it has not changed

I purchased more storage for my back up on I cloud and it has not registered still telling me I don't have enough storage

The error you received is referring to storage on the phone. You purchased iCloud storage which has nothing to do with the storage on the phone itself. Connect the phone to iTunes and the computer and update that way. Then you do not need to download the iOS to the phone and unpack it.

GOOD DAY I JUST WANNA ASK IF,, WHAT IS THE POSSIBLE THING FOR ME TO DO IF MY IPOD 2ND GEN HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BACKLIGHT,,, IT ALWAYS TURNS INTO DIM WHEN I USE IT ,,, BUT SOMETIMES IT WORKS JUST FINE,,, PLS TELL ME WHAT TO DO,, THANKS AND MORE POWER

    Please don't shout.
Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Can I reset my search engine to Wikipedia? I don't want any of those default Search Engines anymore they are too intrusive. And I can not Empty Cache any more and Google has taken over the address bar?

Can someone please explain how this now works? And am I obligated to load Mountain Lion. It's a very expensive price to pay for online privacy that isn't even Private anymore. I am old enough that I don't have to pay ransome. I can just quit.
I didn't say and was never asked If I wanted Mountain Lion. I can no longer 'Empty Cache' at the end of a session online and when I do a search now (and this has all changed overnight) the query is typed into what used to be the address bar and when the search results appear, after reading the first result and I want to read the second or fifth or Any of the other results of the query I am forced to resubmit the search in the address bar because the 'Page Back' button has been removed and the Little Red Dot closes the Search Results Page altogether.
What else am I in for with Mountain Lion? I already know that I do NOT want anything to do with iCloud. I am willing to bet a lot of money that a pharmaceutical company one day is going to be holding me for ransome with a new drug that was created out of the symptoms of a once - upon - a - time naturally occuring symptom of aging. At least I can turn my Macbook off and leave it that way and the world will not cease to exist. (Or will it?)

    Computer operation 101.
Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall or reset anything. See these for details:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/backuprecovery.html
If you only have a Time Machine backup, ensure that you can reliably restore it to another disk/volume/partition before updating/upgrading.
