Designing variable output power supply

hi
could anyone  help me out in designing variable output power supply ?
as i am new to this please post the circuit and also the step by step procedures in developing the circuit.

Hi rckz,
The link below has an example of a variable power supply.
http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://howcircuits.com/downloads/circuits-and-diagrams/power-supp...
You can try to find the components in Multisim by right-clicking and going to Place Component. You can look through the database and place them on the schematic and then wire them as shown in the schematic.
Hope this helps.

  • Creating a myDaq Voltage Variable Power Supply

    Hi Everyone,
Just received my NI myDaq the other day and just starting to play around with it.
I was a little disappointed to find out that the Power Supplies were not Variable (i.e. fixed 5V and +/- 15V), but that's what I get for not reading the fine print .
I figured a Variable Voltage Power Supply would be a fun good first project, but have no idea where to begin. I was hoping you guys could give me some advice/point me in the direction to look.
I plan on using myDaq for primarily breadboarding for EE post-labs.
Since the 5-V supply allows for the most current to be drawn, I figure that would be the first supply to be built.
Can anyone point me in the direction to move towards?
    Thanks!

    Hello Ernie,
Depending on the required output voltage and and current, there are a few approaches you can try.
Buffering the Analog Output(s) is the most straightforward method. You could probably get to +/- 12V if you pick an opamp with small enough headroom requirements and add 20% gain. You'd use the +/- 15V rails to power the opamp (be sure to consider rail tolerance), and you should limit your output to the 32 mA spec of the +/-15V rail. The buffer is essentially a linear regulator, so be careful of the power dissipation in the amplifier at high currents.
If you want higher output currents at the lower voltages, consider a switching regulator. There are a variety of topologies depending on the input-to-output voltages. Look for Buck to step down a higher input voltage to a lower output voltage; Boost to step up; Buck-Boost to step up or down. There are others, but these are simplest to start with. You can use myDAQ's analog outputs to inject an error voltage into the regulator's feedback to allow programmatic output voltage control. Take a look at power supply chip vendors' websites (TI, Analog Devices, Linear Tech, National Semiconductor, etc.) for app notes and component recommendations.
Another approach is digitally-controlled switching regulators. These provide extensive control and read back capabilities through a digital interface to the chip. Google "digital power" for ideas.
If you need even higher power, you'd need to bring in an external supply or battery, but the control could still come from the myDAQ AO or digital interface.
It can be a challenging exercise, but I hope this helps get you started.

  • Power supply 90W A1097 broke

Where could I buy a 90W, model A1097 power supply for my 23 inch Cinema display?  Sounds like this is no longer available from Apple.  Also, I could not find any documentation by Apple on a 3rd party replacement.
Also, helpful would be advice as to where I could find a 220 V AC input and 24.5V, 3.7A output power supply.
And lastly, has anyone tried a 24V power supply (much more common compared to 24.5V)
I bought the display for $800 in July of 2008.
    Thanks much for your help

Thanks but $200 is unfortenuately a bit too expensive.
Anybody know where I could find a 220 V AC input and 24.5V, 3.7A output power supply?  And has anyone tried a 24V power supply (much more common compared to 24.5V)?
    Thanks again

  • Variable power supply not working in virtual elvis

When i make a virtual elvis 3d schematic i cannot get any output from the variable power source, i have played with it alot and still no output. please help.

Thank you for your time to help me out,
I got it to work using the shift+P and shift+n hotkeys. A suggestion I have is to remove the shift restraint for the GUI interface P and N buttons that appear on the screen after you highlight variable power supply, as it is non-intuitive for a user to know you must hold shift then press GUI buttons as well. I suggest coding those visual buttons to alias SHIFT+P and SHIFT+N operations when you click on them for ease of user interface.

  • Variable power supply Mydaq

Hello im thinking of buying a Mydaq but im not sure if I can use for what I need it.
In class IM not allowed to use the Ni-Elvis 2 board unless a TA is present and if i run out of time theres no way for me to make up the lab.
so i have a breadboard at home from radioshack(electronics learnig kit) and the volatges go up in increments of 1.5 to 9v.
but in my lab i need to test the following voltages -5v,-10v,0v,5v,10v
from my research it seems i need a variable power supply so i can control the voltages going in into the board.i know with the elvis 2 board we can switch the voltages right from the computer.
so my question is does MYDAQ havea VPS where i can control the voltages from -10 to 10V in increments of 5? and im able to specify the increments of voltage?
also is it possible to get MyDAQ just the interface without the software?
    thank you

Thanks for that link Mark W, thats' a great idea for low current situations!
Looking at page 37 of the myDAQ user manual here, it say that the analog output provides up to 2mA of current.
The ELVIS prototyping board can source up to 500mA of current.

  • The output of a power supply in labview using a Magna Power LXI over RS232 to simulate a periodic voltage.

How can I toggle the output of a power supply in labview using a Magna Power LXI over RS232 to simulate a periodic voltage?  Any help would be apreciated?

    LXI is Ethernet communication.
Does the power supply have an RS232 port?
Are you looking for an RS232 to Ethernet (LXI) Converter
    https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=rs232%20to%20ethernet%20ip
But to simulate a periodic voltage you need to send the SCPI "Source" command to the power supply in a loop.
Changing the Voltage setting in periodic value.
How fast of a periodic voltage do you need?
You may be limited to how fast LabVIEW, Windows and your power supply can respond to commands.
Use VISA writes. It is the same for LXI as it is for RS232. The LabVIEW code would be the same.
After you select the corrent VISA Ref, either a com port or an IP address, LabVIEW does not care if it is LXI or RS232.
From a Magna manual I found
    Command Syntax
    [SOURce]:VOLTage[:LEVel][:IMMediate][:AMPLitude] <nrf+>
    [SOURce]:VOLTage[:LEVel]:TRIGgered[:AMPLitude] <nrf+>

  • 6509 Power Supply Output Failure

I have a 6509 chassis w/1 Sup720 and dual 3000W power supplies. When I power it on it runs for about 3-5 minutes and the power supplies shutdown. The red "Output Failure" light comes on. They are connected to 110V/20Amp circuits. These are the same circuits that were used with a previous set of power supplies (lower wattage). I removed everything from the chassis except for the fan tray and the sup module to reduce the power demand. Same result. Thoughts?

    Hi
Have u tried running the box with single power supply instead of both supplies ??
Also are u getting the LED status on both the power supply unit ??
You can also use show environment power, show environment, show power commands to check out the power supply status.

  • Disabling output of a power supply and enabling it

I need to contol the ouput of my power supply when my mulitmeter reaches a certain voltage or drops below it. My question is how do I connect the multimeter to the power supply so that the power supply will be on until the mulitmeter reaches X voltage then turns back on when it goes below X voltage.

Here is how I would start. You will need to do more to this but should give you an idea of how to get started. This was a very quick and dirty way of using what you had and making it do more.
You will need to set the limits on the in trange and you will have to hook the ture false back up to the set output.

  • Re: Power Supply Problems/ Bad Design

The moderator of this site seems to think that any external power supply can have the same problems as apple powerbook supply. "Not so", say I ! Most PC notebooks and yes, I do use them, have a fairly sturdy cord on both sides of the connection. Should one find oneself in a situation without a power supply for a pc notebook it is usually possible to get one from a local Radio Shack or international electrical store. Not so with apple powerbooks. the connections are specifically apple and although there ae a few generic replacement PSU they are not generally available only from mac speciality stores. Why apple decides to design what is obviously a flimsy (my electrical gaffer on my movie looked at it and just laughed)and possibly dangerous device is beyond me. It occurs to me that with all the innovative design apple has come up with in the past has gone to the designer's heads. Now we are faced with a 'magnetic' connector on the new powerbook pro line. Are you kidding apple ? Please just give us a simple, generic power supply and conmnector so that we travellers can rest in peace knowing we can replace the PSU anywhere in the world.
BTW my PSU was smoking and sparking when I awoke in my hotel room until it just gave up.

    Two alternative power adapter manufacturers:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/APLN2M/
The most common issues people have with Apple's adapters that I've seen are (not that this applies to you, but perhaps one will refer to something you've done that you didn't realize could cause harm):
    1. They pull by the cord and not the bulb.
    2. They push in without looking.
    3. They let the cord bend at the bulb or at the brick. Give it at least two inches of slack.
    4. They don't remove the plastic wrapping that is clear from the brick when they first get it. This under the wrong conditions could create an overheating condition.
    5. They rely on unreliable power sources. Some older houses have issues with giving reliable power to outlets. Using a backup battery surge protector like those from APC can help.
By the way, my father's Dell power adapter had to be replaced too. Non-Apple notebook power adapters are actually more flimsy than you give them credit for. Part of the problem is designing the transformer to be in such a compressed space that is lightweight too. Until people don't mind the extra weight of a full fledged desktop power supply inside a notebook, thus allowing standard power cables, or a room temperature superconductor is invented, this will be a persistent issue. Take good care of your cords, and don't let them bend so much that they fray.
I might add, I went to Radio Shack, and they had the parts for me to build a power adapter for my Powerbook. Unfortunately the transformer brick would have been 3 times as large and as heavy.

  • G5 Power Supply Zapped. Design defect?

Had my new Powermac G5 processor for 4 months and when I turned it on recently, I heard a very loud snap. Would not turn on after that. Did the internal power reset procedure found in the Apple support pages. No good. Took my processor to CompUSA for service. Power supply was blown. Apple tech at CompUSA said he has had 3 other G5 units in for the exact same problem! Wanted to post to alert others and find out if this is a problem others have run into.
    Michael

I had the same thing happen to me back in October of 2004, actually. I bought the computer in July of 2004 and in October, nearly 4 months to the day, my dual 1.8 G5 died and it was the power supply. It took the San Francisco Apple store 19 days to repair it (they broke the case during the repair and had to order one from the Apple store in Chicago). The main gripe I had was how long it took them to diagnose the issue. They replaced a whole slew of other stuff first because the power supply tested ok. In the end, the summary statement of how much they spent was about $300 more than I paid for the machine. They could have just given me a new machine and made me a happier customer and come out financially better off than they did in the long run.
And yes, it's a chronic problem. There's an entire section devoted to it at Macintouch: http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/powermacg5/topic4026.html

  • 12 V power supply / built in airport

any plans to add a 12V power supply input?
this would be very handy for the usage in motorhomes, cars, ships etc.
also a buildt in air port express would be great, one wire less...
so apple, go ahead and make Hi Hfi even better

You could introduce some noise by mounting a power supply inside of the SCXI chassis. The chassis itself does provide some degree of shielding, so you would be eliminating some of that shielding by placing that power supply inside. However, we have no specs for that because the chassis was not designed for that application. Another option may be to use the SCXI-1124 analog output module. While it has 6 channels with a +/- 10V range, you can cascade channels to get up to 60V per module. Below is the link to the SCXI-1124 produce page. I hope this information helps.

  • M7332 Power Supply-How can I tell if it works?

I have a power book G3 Lombard, I believe. I have purchased a brand new power supply from ebay. But my computer won't start. The battery is dead too. It has been sitting idle for nearly a year.
My question is- shouldn't I be able to test the output of the power supply with a voltmeter to prove that it works? I have purchased 3 different power supplies and they all produce no electricity at the outlet tip.

    ABoney,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
You cannot safely measure the voltage of the plug which connects to the power port due to its design. The center post has three insulated parts with the tip being one and it does not carry power.
Did the powerbook work the last time it was used (last year)?
First, try resetting the power manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If unsuccessful and since the 'book has been stored for a year, I would recommend this procedure:
Remove the power adapter, main battery, and optical drive; position the display vertically since the 'book will want to tilt backwards. Lift off the keyboard (place it face down on the palm rest...do not disconnect the ribbon cable), then disconnect the PRAM battery as shown in this photo; click to enlarge the top photo.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Lombard/PRAM-Battery/31/3/Page-3/PR AM-Battery
Without any reassembly, connect just the power adapter and try starting. If successful, press the power button until it shuts off (disconnect the power adapter if it will not shut off). Reconnect the PRAM battery and test startup again. If successful, shut down and reassemble the 'book; if it fails to start, disconnect the PRAM battery, then reassemble the 'book.
The powerbook will run fine without the rechargeable internal backup battery a.k.a. PRAM battery and these can be replaced for about $20.
The purpose of this procedure is two-fold: You may have a corrupted power manager that will not clear normally and/or the PRAM battery has an internal short that prevents startup.

  • Help : Simple Power Supply Filter

First , thanks to everyone who answered my question on "time step too small".
I am in the filter stage of a very simple power supply. However, when I connect a capacitor to the output of my rectified signal, the output signal of the load is not what I expect to see.
I expect it to be fairly constant, and located at the peak of the input voltage.
Any help will be deeply appreciated.
I have attached the circuit to it.
    Thank you.

O.K. Here's a picture of your circuit with the PI Filter attached to it. I just arbitrarily selected the components to use. I used low value caps so you can still see a slight ripple on it. A larger capacitor at the end of the bridge will filter this ripple almost completely out. Most circuits I have seen usually have this cap set somewhere in the 100uF-300uF range and the output capcitor in the range of 10uf-50uf range.
I can't remember the formylas for designing a PI Filter, but I am sure if you search the internet there are resources that can help you with that. I think I may refreshen my memeory on this subject as well.

  • Power Supply Trimming Routine

Can someone share a power supply trimming loop?  I would like to enter a nominal voltage and have a Upper Limit, Lower Limit as variables and loop until the measured voltage is between the upper and lower limits.  Thanks.
    Tony

The problem with trimming a power supply is that you really need an outside device to measure the supply output, typically a DMM.  So since we are mixing who different devices, I find it better to just make the trimming loop in TestStand.
But the loops are not hard.
    Meas = NaN
    Set supply voltage to DesiredV
    While(Meas < LL || Meas > UL)
Set supply voltage (SetV = SetV + (Meas - DesiredV)
Measure with DMM (set measured voltage to Meas)
    End
