Desktop Publishing software

I'm looking for a desktop publishing program to create a booklet for a club function. It will be a 5x8 size (folded pages) with text, pictures and graphics. There would be 4 pages on each 8.5x11 sheet. I used Pagemaker 10 years ago and it would automatically create the proper sequence when I chose "make booklet" The previous booklets were done using Printmaster which doesn't come for a Mac. It costs $20 so I'd like something under $50. Any suggestions?

Your best chance is to search at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. There are several products available, but I don't know that you'll find one for $50.00. If you have Apple's iWork you could use Pages. If you have MS Office you can use Word. There are open source alternatives to Office: NeoOffice and Open Office (neooffice.org and openoffice.org.) If you want something on the order of PageMaker and InDesign, there's the open source Scribus (scribus.org.)

  • Desktop Publishing Software Recommendations Needed

I am writing a book. It's about 300 pages and I'm using Pages. It looks pretty nice in pages, but Pages is not desktop publishing software. It can be awkward when trying to change the objects or backgrounds in numerous sections (not as awkward as Word though). It also doesn't create an index.
I can't afford $500 to $1000 for one of the name brands.
Please recommend some DTP software that might be useful in creating a book that I've written in Pages. I'm looking for something that might make my workflow more efficient.
    Thank you.

These days it would also help to know the method of publication you plan to target — hardcopy books, digital media
Apple still saves Adobe PDF 1.3. With this version of the document description model, Apple is limited to the standard rendering specification ISO 15930 PDF/X-3 which deals with management of colour information, but not with management of character information (semantic information and structure information). ISO 19005-1:2005 PDF/A is a standard rendering specification based on PDF 1.4 as well for management of colour information as for management of character information (structure information and semantic information).
In other words, the support for management of colour information is there but is truly tough to use and support for management of character information is not there at all.
It is incorrect that QuarkXPress is usable for computerised full character cataloguing with PDF. Quark management mailed the technical press (me and a chief editor) that support for searchable PDF was not intended in version 7.
Adobe had no software whatsoever that supported structure information and semantic information in 2002; that has come trickle by trickle and if e.g. in Adobe InDesign CS (ID39 a searchable PDF is placed in an InDesign page and re-exported, the nested PDF is not searchable.

  • What is the best desktop publishing software for a Mac

I recently published my first MAC.  On my PC, I used Publisher to create brochures.  What is the best software on a MAC for creating brochures and flyers?

CS2 was a terrible experience and that was 5-6 yrs ago and of course totally depended on Rosetta, on plugiin problems, and is not supported with 10.6.8 and won't run under Lion.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 looks like an alternative

  • Desktop publishing software compatible with windows and mac?

I am trying to help the kids at my daughter's school produce their own newspaper.
Apart from Word (which I can't get to do what I want!) is there anything out there compatible with both operating systems. The school PCs have MS Publisher 2003 installed. I am working on a mac using Quark and InDesign. I created the last newspaper for them but I'd like the kids to get more involved if possible and enable them to have some input when it comes to creating it. Other than having to do it myself or even worse invite 60 kids into my home is there anything out there?!!!

    Hi Grace,
if you use QuarkXPress 7 or 8, you can actually legally install/activate *the same* license *on two* machines, even cross-platform. You are just allowed to use one installation concurrently.
So you could test it on Windows and if the student like it, a student copy is extremely cheap.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT2476 what is the best free publishing software please?

What is the best basic home publishing software please? Is there free software available?

Instead of leaving you hanging without an actual answer, try here:

I put desktop publishing into the search box. Some of the links only have "desktop" or "publishing" as a match, so really have nothing to do with what you want. Trying to put the phrase in quotes actually resulted in matches that weren't even close.
Anyway, Scribus in in that list. I've heard of it, it's free and a lot of users seem to like it. The only other free one is Cenon.
Shareware ones you could try are Desktop Publisher Pro and Page Layout Designer. That's also a few marked commercial or demo, which are iStudio Publisher, iCalamus and Swift Publisher.
Just to note, I haven't tried any of these as I use InDesign. But it's a place to start.

  • Desktop Publishing

    Hello all,
Years ago I used to use PageSetter on the Amiga and Serif PagePlus on the PC. I really enjoyed Desktop Publishing and although it was a hobby I did produce a few documents that were used commercially such as business stationery, documents and an ad to go in the Daily Telegraph. The Degree that I am taking is centered around computers and software but does not include DTP so I am seeking out a local course.
My questions are, what is the industry standard DTP program for the Mac, I've a feeling it is QuarkXpress but I am unsure because there seems to be a flood of Adobe and other manufacturers software products out there. If it is QuarkXpress or indeed another package, what is the highest version that will run on an OS9 Mac? I know OS9 is old but with 1GHz CPU and 1.5GB RAM I should be OK power wise and it means that an older version of software can be had from E-Bay for little money. I'm not afraid of buying 700 page books to learn how to use packages, even if they are for personal learning, one day I might put them to professional use.
Any help with this topic would be appreciated!
    Thanks

I just got my Mac (converted from PC). I've done a lot of DTP at work on a PC, but a lot of the vendors I work with use Macs. We all use Quark and have used it for years. Good program, a little learning curve. My vendors have been buzzing about Adobe InDesign and love it. I haven't used it yet but I own it and will load it and play with it soon.
If you're not really serious about DTP and just want to do a few projects -- have you tried Pages in Apple's iWork? I opened it for the first time Wed night and within 2 hours created a really nice looking newsletter for a recreational club I belong to. If you use the templates in Pages, it's pretty easy. And iWork only costs $79 as opposed to the high cost of the others.
Sorry but I can't answer the OS questions you have, since I'm new to Mac.

  • Question:  Is Creative Suites a good desktop publishing product?

Is Creative Suites a good desktop publishing product for creating high quality brochures, sales letters and marketing materials right from my laptop?   Thanks

2 computers Max. You would need to uninstall to use in a different computer. (say a 3rd etc)
Unless you have a network which I would think that you should be able to install it on a local server as a shared drive and everyone MAY be able to access it. However I am not sure if the Software MUST be installed on a C drive to use.
I have video games installed on an external drive and can play them without having them installed on the c drive. Yet, some features may not work.
Besides I just bought the Master suite. I am coming from Avid and must state that the learning curve is huge and it does not come with a manual. Might as well be open source with no manuel. IMO.  Or give their software away and 'clean up' on tutorials. Not the select ones that cover what a person wants to give on.
IE: If you want to add an effect like Zoom in a project nowhere to look it up. You must slueth through poorly scripted videos with missing steps. Adobe Vs Avid or FCP may boil down to user interface, or instruction manuals you don't have to buy for 80.00 bucks a book.

  • Best desktop publisher for MBP coming from Microsoft publisher

    Hey gang,
My wife has a small business.  She now has two MPB.  She runs one with Parallels and windows XP because she is in love with Microsoft publisher for making newsletters and similar.  I am going to buy her a new MBP and want to go to Yosemite and get her off Windows.  We have Pages, Numbers, Excel, Powerpoint, keynote etc.  What software would you recommend that she can use and make the easy transition of Publisher to whatever?  Can .pub files be opened in other applications?  Any advice would be great.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Here's a link to an article describing some of the options for converting Publisher files:
    http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/publisher/f/share_pubfiles.htm
If she is actually making do with Publisher, Pages might be sufficient, but there are plenty of options: Swift Publisher, Scribus, Printworks, eventually Affinity Publisher (not yet available for the Mac OS but in the works).

  • Remote desktop client software not active

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm a bit bewildered by this errormessage (and I couldn't get a hit when I searched for it) when I try to drag a file from the xserv to the macbook pro desktop, remote desktop client software not active.
The macbook has the ard server and connects to the xserv ppc. It connects over the internet.
The xserv is behind a iptables fw and I have forwarded 3283 tcp/udp plus 5900 udp/tcp to the server. Have I forgotten a port ?
    I've read through http://www.starkpr.com/ard.htm as well as http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070302234400232&query=vnc%2Bsimpl e%2Bset%2Bup
and tried to find out more from the discsussions here.
The macbook pro sits behind an airport which is hooked into the dsl modem. Do I need to configure port forward in the airport as well.
Connecting to the xserv and working on it works great but the copy file transfer fails.

Hi there I took new try at this and this is what finally solved it for me.
The earlier answer I got was very good advise but I had already done that bit, actually I might have overdone it a bit I had checked all the boxes under the useraccount on sharing.
    Back to business.
Firewalling. I realised I need to open and portforward at both locations and remeber it's booth tcp and udp.
So at the xserve location I needed to forward 3283 and 5900 both tcp and udp from outside to the IPnumber of the xserve.
At home with my macbook I needed to do the same.
However this did not solve it, I had forgotten one software on the macbook. On the xserve I had installed ARD upgraded it to 3.1 AND installed the upgrade for ARD 3.1 client. The client part I had forgotten at home. So once my ARD and ARD client software matched I could connect to the xserve and drag and drop files booth ways.
ARD wasn't running on the xserve I just had it installed along with the client software.
So portforwarding in firewalls and the same software and versions in all locations seems to have solved it for me.
A small note enabling/disabling the firewall in macbookpro did nothing for me since when enabled ARD rules were in place and active so it still worked.
I hope I made some sense.

  • Remote Desktop - The Remote Desktop administrator software does not match the installed client software version.

  • Remote desktop administrator software failed to start

I just upgraded to the new ARD client and now I cannot start Remote Desktop Administrator. It says "The Remote Desktop Administrator software failed to start due to an unexpected error. The remote desktop software may not be installed correctly or the computer may require a restart."
Again, this happened after I install the ARD client update just released by Apple on my MBP 10.5.8.
I need to get ARD Administrator back up and running. How?

This is the most feedback I've ever gotten to any post.
After much trial and error here is the solution I came up with:
    1. follow the instructions in the following link. Most importantly, make sure you follow the instructions on removing the 10.2 clients. I know that's not what we're dealing with here but it is necessary:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577?viewlocale=en_US
    2. Put the remote desktop Admin app in the trash and empty the trash.
    3. Download and install the ARD 3.2.2 client via the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/appleremotedeskt op322client.html
    4. Reinstall the remote desktop administrative software in the Applications directory. (Actually, what I did was zip the ARD admin app, then trashed the non-zipped app and emptied the trash, then unzipped my zipped ARD Admin app and made sure the app was in the Applications directory. Didn't need to mess with the CD this way.)
    5. Download and install the ARD Admin 3.3 update. It should now recognize that ARD Admin is installed on the computer and update it.
    6. Try to launch the Admin app. It should work now.
I believe these are all the steps. After this I ran software update and it said I had no software to update. It looks as though the ARD Admin updater also updates the client software.

  • Desktop Publisher Scheduled Report Limits

    Post Author: bicknell
    CA Forum: crystalreports.com
Using the crystalreports.com desktop publisher, a customer scheduled the upload of 80+ reports to crystalreports.com on a dailybasis.  Some of the jobs were failing and others seemed like they were being run continuously.    There are two significant points to know about the desktop publisher:When the desktop publisher uploads a file to crystalreports.com, the program needs to logon to crystalreports.com using your crystalreports.com user account.  The site only allows 10 concurrent logons for the same account at any one time.  This effectively limits you to scheduling 10 documents at any one time.If you are refreshing these reports before they are uploaded, the number of concurrent refreshes will be limited by the resources of your computer.  It is a fairly expensive process in terms of memory and CPU time, especially if you have a large number of records in each report.  We've had another customer report that they could only actually refresh about 10 reports at a time before they started getting failures. This could be a combination of report size/complexity and the processing power of your computer. Note: The ODC and SFDC connector are designed to handle much bigger tasks than the desktop publisher. The desktop publisher is designed for lightweight loads not exceeding 10 connections.

    Hi JD,
I'm not sure about the "unable to connect to the file" error you are seeing.  Can you post the exact wording of the error and where you are seeing it?  If you can post a screen shot of the error, that would be great.  If you change the file name of the rpt on your hard drive, the task won't be able to find it the next time it runs.  Could that be the problem?
You should be able to create a task in the desktop publisher, point it to a report and schedule it - at that time, it will prompt you for the db logon and parameter values.  Once you have supplied that info, the task will run according to whatever recurrence pattern you have set - daily, weekly, whatever.  Each time the task runs, it will try to refresh the rpt file with the db logon and parameter values you specified and upload the rpt file to crystalreports.com.
You should always be able to open the rpt file in Crystal Reports, however I have seen a problem where the rpt file gets corrupted if you run out of disk space when the report is being saved after the refresh.  The error we got from this though was that the rpt file had been corrupted.  I don't think it complained about not being an rpt file.
Yes, you should be able to use a salesforce.com db connection and you should be able to configure the desktop publisher task to run every 30 minutes.
Yes, if you do edit the rpt file  you should see the changes the next time the task runs.  We have found problems where you will get an error on uploading to cr.com using the overwrite option if the rpt file has been changed "too much".  Most often this only applies to the db connection changing too much.  If you are just editing the report layout, that should be fine.

  • The Remote Desktop administrator software failed to start due to an unexpected error...

    Hi all...
Suddenly, I'm getting this error message when I try to open ARD. It was working a week ago and I'm not aware of changing anything. Any advice?
This is the 3.6.1 version of the ARD admin and I have the 3.6.2 Client installed (that was the way it was before, too, when it was working).
Note: I did try a fix from the forums that was posted in 2009, which required deleting the ARDAgent from the RemoteManagement folder in System/Core Services... and then reinstalling again using the Apple ARD Admin download for same. It worked for one run of the program, then the error came back.
    What do you guys think?

    Hmphf.
You may have to reinstall the Remote Desktop SW. See if that helps.
I don't think it's a coincidence that this update "fixed" the Remote Desktop SUID warning, and it also removed the potential update from my computer which I had placed on "Ignore" since I did not need it and did not need the warning, either. So there is a connection between this update and the Remote Desktop SW.
