Desktop rebuild after AppleWorks 6 Install

I have a refurbished iBook G3 / 900MHz with OS 9.2.2 & 10.2.4 (dual boot configuration). Awhile back I installed AppleWorks 6.2.3 (while booted to OS 9).
When the computer restarted after the install, it immediately began rebuilding the desktop. I've never had that happen before after installing a program. Is this normal with AppleWorks 6? The real problem was that it took an hour to complete!
Normally I rebuild the desktop with extensions off, and it takes about 5 minutes (on this machine). Any ideas why the desktop rebuild was triggered after the install, and why it took so long to complete?
Thanks.

If the Finder thinks that there is a problem with the desktop database or if the files have been moved, it will rebuild the desktop the next time it starts up. This can also happen if the File Exchange control panel was disabled the last time the desktop was rebuilt, as this control panel's functionality affects the database.
If you have Mac OS X installed on the system and you rebuild the desktop from Mac OS 9, the process will take a long time because it is checking all of the files Mac OS X uses. This can be avoided by using the Classic pane of System Preferences to rebuild the desktop.

  • Desktop Freeze after LEopard install

After installing Leopard my OS will not start normally. First start will almost always freeze when the desktop arrives on screen. The top finder menu shows but no desktop icons. The curser will sometimes turn to the color wheel but nothing happens. I can even click on item on the dashboard and hear the hard drive work but nothing on the screen. I do a hard reboot with the power and the second time it will start normally. If i do it again a day later it will do the same until the second restart.
Any thoughts, anyone with the same issue, what could it be, very dissapointing!!

Hey Boom-Stick, yeah, I got the same problems, almost. Only my PBG4 won't show the desktop at all, everything else is running though, like photoshop or any other app. I'm fighting my way through this, but I didn't find the right solution yet. One that helped a bit was the following:
    go here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1223396&tstart=0
and follow the steps. Create a new Admin, then all of the sudden the desktop/finder works perfectly. Only when you go back to the old username, it won't work again, that's the part I haven't figured out yet... right now I'm repairing my permissions, hoping this will help. But I dunno yet.
    Cheers, Ben

  • System rebuild after RAM install

I tried to add another stick of 512mb Corsair XMS PC3200 400mhz and immediatley had to clear CMOS and reset BIOS after the system failed to reboot .  Taking the stick out allowed me to boot properly and get the system back-up.  I RMA'ed the stick got another of the same and now I had a lsass.exe error which forced my local computer shop to reinstall WinXP and start from scratch (reformat the drives).  Has anyone had any luck running Corsair XMS across all three slots for a total of 1536mb?  Memclock has been tried at 400mhz and 333mhz...I'm now running at 333mhz with only two sticks.  I have sticks seated in slot 1 and 2

well, the response ure most likely to get is that your PSU is underpowered on the 12v line for such a hefty rig.
Things u can try tho, set the 2nd value in the ram timings up at least one. If you are using all three slots then max is 333mhz btw.
Update to latest bios, not sure if it has many ram issues fixed in it, but tis wortha  try.
oh and read up threads about SATA and RAID on this site, although i havent found problems some people have with drives corrupting, maybe thats where your lsass.exe went...
i have corsair xms and has been stable a long time now.

  • Long desktop rebuild

I recently purchased a refurbished iBook G3. It came loaded with OS 9.2 and 10.2., as well as the OS CD's for both systems. I also received a CD containing AppleWorks 6, which I decided to install. Before the installation was complete, a message appeared that the desktop was being rebuilt. This took an hour to complete!
I was told by the company I bought the iBook from, that possibly a desktop file was corrupted, causing the long rebuild. They suggested reinstalling 9.2, from the CD which they supplied, and this would get rid of the corrupted desktop file(s). After that, a desktop rebuild took about 5 minutes. So far, so good.
Then, the other day I downloaded TechToolLite, and wanting to be sure everything was up to par, I used TechTool to rebuild the desktop again, the idea being that a TechTool rebuild is more thorough, because it actually deletes the desktop files and rebuilds them from scratch.
I'm 45 minutes into the rebuild and the "rebuilding desktop" progress bar is only about a quarter of the way complete. This has made me nervous.
Does anyone know why the rebuild should take so long, based on the above info?
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I'm chiming in here too, I use Disk Warrior although I have tt pro too I still prefer DW... another little tool I use in between Disk warrior use is called Trashdesktop.
It is free and is really great for desktop rebuilding. You instal the program, reboot to ensure it is working then when the desktop is reached you simply drag/drop the closed hard drive icon(s), if more than one or partitioned then restart once more.
It doesn't look like it did anything but what it did do was deposit the invisible database file into the trashcan. When you reboot it recreates brand new ones from the things you have installed on your computer and touches nothing else.
Then you can use DW for an even more thorough cleaning once a month. I use Trash*Desktop once a week because I edit docs constantly for a website i administrate at and my own plus artwork, you may not need to use it as often depending on how many times you adjust docs and such.

  • How did my desktop appear on another computer after Leopard install?

I have a Mac G5 connected by ethernet to a cable company. I bought a MacBook for Chicago which is 2,000 miles away. After upgrading my G5 with Leopard I physically took the Leopard CD to Chicago and installed it on my MacBook in Chicago where I have wireless (router) After the install, my desktop was duplicated on this MacBook from the G5 in California. I never had these two computers connected, nor have I ever done a file sharing manipulation between these two computers.
One of the files on the desk top on my MacBook, when opened reveals all my files just like the one in CA except I can't open any of them because the program cannot be found. That is not suprising at all because I never installed any of these programs.
One program did open and can be used however and that is PhotoShop which I use lot on my G5. I never installed that program on my MacBook.
How did this stuff get on my MacBook? I believe there is a bug in the Leopard CD that performs all the functions I could do manually to get this desk top to duplicate.
    What do you say?

Lizard33, Welcome to the discussion area!
Do you have a .Mac account? If so you are probably seeing the new Leopard "Back to My Mac" feature in operation.

  • Desktop Software requiring re-install after each sync

Why do I have to re-install the desktop software after each sync? I have done this over four times and it is getting very frustrating. I have tweeted for support...still waiting...Is anyone else have this problem?

    Hello,
That's a rather odd result...can you provide more details? What exactly tells you that you must reinstall each time?
Have you tried the clean start over? I suggest this thread:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/Desktop-Software-for-PC/Cleanly-quot-Starting-Over-quot-with-...
It starts with a process for cleanly starting over, and there is some discussion, and there is also a post (15) with links to older Desktop Software versions, if those are needed. Note that this is not, by any means, guaranteed to work...but it has worked for many to resolve issues they are having.
    Good luck!

  • System reboots continually after CS5 install

I have a CS5 workstation here that I took out of service a few months ago because it showed signs of OS corruption and possibly a virus. After messing with it for a while I did a bare-metal rebuild, beginning formatting both drives and resetting BIOS to system defaults. The system worked fine for 6-7 hours during Windows installation and configuration, driver DL and update, etc. After I installed CS5 Master Collection, it returned to its prior behavior.
ASUS M4A88T-M mobo, Athlon II CPU, 8GB RAM, 250GB boot drive, 1TB data drive, crappy ATi mobo graphics with NVidia GTX260 primary, Win7 Home Premium.
The system boots and gives a login screen, If I do nothing, about 2 minutes later it does a graceful shutdown and restarts. If I log into one of the two user accounts, it finishes loading the desktop before saying "Logging off" and then shutting down and restarting. This was the behavior that caused me to take it out of service (and resisted all attempts at fixing - I couldn't even deactivate CS5 before it would roll over). It will run in safe mode for a little longer (actually, it WOULD before - have not tried it since the rebuild) but selecting "do not restart automatically" at boot time has no effect.
It's possible that it's a hardware or firmware fault, but the oddity of the system running fine until CS5 was installed points to something changed at a boot/startup/initial configuration level, long before any CS5 app is started.
I have long since moved on to CS5.5 and CC, but I maintain this system for working on a few shared client projects; I kind of need it back up soon. If no one has any better thoughts I will try a new motherboard and (if needed) another rebuild. Very frustrating...
ANY ideas on what aspect of CS5 might be causing this, and how to get in and fix it without doing yet another rebuild and another license hit that will likely need a call to Adobe to fix? I think it must be some leftover fragment of Windows installer instructions, trying to finish an installation step and failing out. Or...?

Found it. It was an unbelievably evasive TDSS bootkit virus that survived a bare-metal format and OS install and showed itself only by chance. Windows Malware Tool beheaded it and TDSSkiller stomped it out. All updates installed, no further problem. The issue, besides what the virus was actively doing, was that it prevented a critical security update from being installed, which created a whole list of other update-related problems.
By far the nastiest malware I've ever had to deal with. But fixed.
Kudos to Kaspersky for making the TDDS remover available for free.

  • At a total loss on how to fix PSCS6 after CSCC Install

I am assuming that the CC version of Photoshop had something to do with this as it started just after the install and they are both doing this.
The very next image I edited after the install was gif_01.gif.  I saved it to: project/005885/site/image/gif_01.gif.
Soon I started working on another graphic and went to save it, say....  desktop\graphic.jpg
The warning box pops up, Warning, saving this image will overwrite the image gif_01.gif do you want to continue.
Now, everytime I save a jpeg it has this message.  No other images do it, except of course gif_01.gif if in that folder.
Not a huge deal except for it is having a bit of a water board effect and is starting to feel like someone died every time it pops.
Shift+Ctrl+Alt+DBLClick = Reseting up my whole work environment and still having the gif issue.  Oh ya, another issue with it is every time I save a jpeg to any file it also save that gif image to the file.  It is an 1800x2400 pixel image so it will really suck to have a few thousand extra on the drives.
Any clues would be great.  I hate to uninstall and reinstall as I am software heavy on this machine and it is used for many tasks.  Sometime reinstalling a single program turns into setting the machine back up and it is a 3 day process.

Also, I just realized it only does it when Save for the WEB is chosen and not when Save As and then JPEG is picked.

I would hazard a guess you copied your plugins from cs6 to the cc installation which is not recommended!
Don't think the advice to reformat and reinstall is the best way and don't know why it was suggested!

  • After successful install, I am unable to use RoboHelp 7 because of constant refresh of file lists

RoboHELP 7 installed on Windows XP
Our enterprise support team installed RH7 on my new laptop via our corporate intranet.  I received an e-mail message reporting that the install failed so I contacted the support team, someone logged on to my machine by remote and did an uninstall of RH7.  Then, the install was done again and the same failure message was received.  Then, RH was uninstalled and the install was attempted for the third time.  Again, I received the failure message.  I had noticed that after each install the icons appeared on my desktop.  So, after this third install, I went ahead and clicked the RH7 HTML icon and the program seemed to start properly.  I have a key number from our enterprise team and I entered the key number to complete the registration.  The UI appeared and I selected my recent project.  RH built the file lists that I expected to see in the left panes of the interface but the file lists kept "twitching" and the cursor kept changing to the hourglass and back.  This happened about once every two or three seconds and I could not move my cursor fast enough to select a file.
One of my co-workers suggested that I uninstall RH7 myself, check the registry and erase any robohelp entries.  I know this is risky but I am confident I can do it.  However, I would like to hear from any RH experts about how to solve this "twitching" problem, if there are other possible solutions.  Thanks.

My gut feel is that if your organisation is large enough to have an Enterprise license, IT would not take too kindly to you uninstalling the product yourself and editing the registry. That's your issue though.
If they are happy, then you could try www.revouninstaller.com with which a number of people have reported good results if you use the stronger options to clear the registry. Again at your risk and responsibility.
You might also like to look at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/robohelp/articles/before_install.html. It includes the script IT should be using. Maybe that should be checked as well.
The other approach is to get them to do a direct install. Worth trying given the issues you are having.

    Try this...
Triple click anywhere in the line below to select it and press Ctrl+C to copy it.
    cmd /k netsh winsock reset
Press the WinLogoKey+R to open the run dialog, then Ctrl+V to paste, then press enter/return.
You should get something similar to this:
Reboot the computer and the problem should be resolved.
If it doesn't work then perhaps a full tear down and rebuild of iTunes will fix things. See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for details.
