Desktop Training

We are a small consulting company, preparing to exploit what we hope will be a profitable a market niche, i.e. installing non-MS systems for small businesses.
As part of the plan, we dropped MS-office and have been using Open office for about 6 mo now. The intent was to give the product a throrough workout, hopefully becoming experts in the process. Our evaluation of the experiment is as follows:
Open office is OK but not great. For 90% of the documents we produce (reports, letters, and spreadsheets), it is perfectly adequate.
Exchange of documents with Clients using MS Office is not problematic. Most reports are acceptable in PDF format, and simple spreadsheets convert well between the two office platforms. RTF has been found to be an acceptable (but not ideal) means of document transfer into Word for clients that require it.
The major problem with successfully introducing Open Office has been lack of classroom training in use of the Tools.
Actually, lack of training was an incentive for us to explore the issue. We hoped that we would be able to develop the expertise in house, and then give classes for profit, assuming that OpenOffice would have sufficient growth to make a good business case.
Unfourtunately, we are still not able to exploit some features of the product ourselves, and do not find the documentation to be helpful in this regard. We too need some training. We are definitely not ready to start promoting Open Office to customers, and face the decision of continuing to use and promote Open Office (and the Java Desktop), versus reverting to MS Office.
Our local Sun Office say they have no interest in Open Office, and after (unsuccessfully) browsing OpenOffice and this site for information on OpenOffice training/certification, I'm posting here to see if I have missed some offering in that domain

I am not familiar with the blade 2500 (except for 1 weeks desktop training course) as usual get trained and never see one again.
    You mention ALOM.
If you drop to the SC prompt (ALOM) try the showenvironment -v command. This may give you some more information.
Sorry just noticed that your server is in fact a V250, the output from the OBP got me there.
    Update
I have found a couple of bugs against this problem which say that it should have been sorted by ALOM 1.3_build3.
As you have installed 1.5.3 I would assume that it would cover this fix.
Did you reset the SC atfer update?

  • When I create a tablet/desktop/phone version of a site, why are all the pages blank?

Hello, longtime listener/user, first time caller
I've been using Muse since jumping on the Creative Cloud train a couple years ago, but to date all my experience had been in maintaining and updating a desktop version of a couple small sites.  I loved the idea of Muse being able to assist in the creation of separate desktop/tablet/mobile layouts (ie responsive design), and this past week was my first experience in using it as I worked on a ground-up rebuild of http://www.eridusociety.org.  I started with a Phone layout, with the intention of getting that right and then expanding outward to a tablet version, and once that was finished, adding a desktop layout.
After completing the mobile site and testing it on Business Catalyst (thanks to all involved in that seamless integration, by the way), I clicked on the +Tablet button and proceeded to build out the tablet layout of the site.  To my dismay, all the pages it built were blank.  I tried deleting and re-doing it with different combinations of the options checked, to no avail.  Then I raced off to the nearest web browser and started searching - surely I missed a step, or the great collective brain of the internet could alert me to some way to achieve this.  Alas, no such luck.
The blank pages are intentional, and the way to populate those blank pages is to go back to the phone layout, open the page, then copy all the content, then switch back to the tablet layout, open the corresponding page on the tablet layout, and paste in the content from the source layout... and of course, rinse and repeat for the desktop layout as well (though for my workflow, I copied the finished tablet layout pages to create the desktop version).
For me, starting with all the page elements from the source layout is much easier than starting from scratch on each and every page.  That way I know I have all the elements on the page, and I can add to (or subtract from) as well as modify the layout in fairly short order.  I've been driving myself a little crazy with all the bouncing back and forth between layouts to copy/paste elements as I work on my site, and for future reference I'd like to know if there's some way that can be avoided in the future?
Ideally, I would like to see an option in the create layout dialog box to be able to copy content (and choose the source layout to copy from).
Beyond that, another great option for this dialog would be to let me choose to switch all the page links to the new layout.  That is, when it copies and pastes all the page content from source layout, Muse would then also update the links to pages within the site so that they link to that layout's pages.  So when I build a phone version and click +Tablet, I can check a box to copy page content from source, specify that source, and then check another box to update links for layout.  After Muse does its magic, I have a tablet layout that's already got page content on it, and it's linking to other pages on the tablet layout (and not to the source/phone layout pages).
Thanks to everyone on the Muse team for a pretty great product, and to the people manning the Twitter account for responding to my tweet and directing me here.

Sanjit, I think one of us is missing the point.  It could be me - is there some way to easily and quickly pop open multiple layouts and pages?  Because for me (running a 12-core Mac Pro with 64GB RAM and FirePro D700 GPU's), Muse lets me switch between one layout view and the next (not open them simultaneously), and takes several seconds to do this every single time.  Opening and closing pages (to create separate tabs/windows) is also incredibly tedious.
I can appreciate that select and drag works just as well as selecting all and using copy/paste shortcut keys, but that is the least time consuming part of the process.
Without copying the page contents from the source layout and transpose internal page links to new layout, Muse falls short of the mark of making it really easy to build responsive sites.  It's kind of like trying to take a cab to a destination across town that makes you get out and walk halfway.  No matter quickly or easily the cab made it through town, it still only got you half way there.

  • How to make Help view well on both laptops and desktops

Hi -- I'm trying to learn RoboHelp 7 and just created my first WebHelp project. I want to show it to a friend, but don't have a server I can publish it to, so I copied all the files onto my flash drive and put it on my laptop. It all works fine, which is a relief -- however, the custom colors are way off, and some of the screenshots are now too big, so the user would have to scroll (which can be annoying). I created it on my desktop and have been looking at it on a larger monitor (1680x1050), but the laptop is old (1024x768). The thing is, a lot of people might have to view it on 800x600.
I couldn't find any information in RH's Help about how I should have set it up so that it views well on different systems. I'm hoping someone could please advise me as to what I should have done, and if there's anything I can do now to fix it, or point me to some information. I used Arial 10 pt for the text, and now it looks 12 pt. Should I have made it 8 pt? Is there a rule for how large an image should be to be viewed on a laptop and a desktop?
One last thing, it's too large to put on a CD, so is does anyone know how to make this into an executable?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
    Daryl

    Hi Daryl
I use an eBook compiler to convert WebHelp to an executable file. You might investigate eBook compilers for that bit. However, I'm not sure how that would help you since a compiler will do little more than to take a swarm of WebHelp files and store them in a wrapper to create a single file. Generally you will end up with something that although it exists as a single file, is larger than what is inside.
Are you SURE it's too big for CD? CD will hold 650 megs (700 if you buy the extended types).
On the screen size issue WebHelp itself should adapt fine. Probably it's the images you are concerned with. And the general rule of thumb is to capture images at a reasonable size to begin with. Never EVER just insert a big ole image into RoboHelp and grab the sizing handle to make it smaller. It will still consume a larger amount of space and the quality will suffer badly. So the best approach is to copy the image at a reasonable size to begin with. Something that may fit nicely in the Topic Pane area as it is presented in the space provided by the lowest common denominator. In your case I believe you said that many are still at 800x600.
Your 10 point text will still be 10 points at a smaller resolution. It will just look a bit different.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Desktop SMS and Windows Mail don't work properly together

    Hi
thought I would post there here as been having some issues with my Windows Mail but my desktop computer doesn't suffer same issues and on a Vista forum where I posted my problem a couple of very helpful told me who to try solving the issues.
One of them suddenly realised I'd said my laptop was a Toshiba and apparently the Desktop SMS and Windows Mail just don't work properly together so the person suggested unless I use it to uninstall it apparently amongst the technically trained its known that these two programs don't like each other and would explain why my desktop doesn't have the issue but laptop does.
After resetting the Windows Mail (tutorial on a vista site http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/) Touch wood don't be put off by vistax64 as site does both 32 and 64 and followed Brink's excellent resetting Windows Mail (didn't restore any mail) and then uninstalled Desktop SMS and touch wood no more mail issues as has been giving me problems virtually daily with marking draft emails as read/sent.
So had to click on forward then delete those bits and finish email to send it and touch wood since doing these two things as soon as send an email to draft or outbox get the number of emails in the brackets whereas before this wouldn't happen unless I closed the program then reopened it.
Hoping these solutions have fixed my problem and wanted to share it with anybody else who wants to read this thread and would recommend the Vista 64 site as they're all really helpful over there and speak in non technical terms for those of us not technically trained.
    Debbie

I have marked this as answered as it was more a post to help others who may have experienced the same problem I did and didn't get a reply or just didn't know that this program could be the reason their Windows Mail has issues that can't seem to be resolved any other way apart from ignore them and hope they don't get worse.

  • Remote Desktop File Access

I'm trying to access my files from remote desktop, and set up a shortcut from my mac side.  I'd like to be able to open word documents on the mac side.  I can access them just fine on the windows side, but they'll only open in PC format.  What I'd like to do is create a shortcut on the mac side to a specific folder from the shared drive on remote desktop.  Any advice would be appreciated!

You should always ask licensing questions of a trained Microsoft licensing specialist.
www.microsoft.com/licensing  If your auditors come through asking from where you received your information, and you reply that you got the information from a technical forum, the auditors will not be very
    happy.
RDS CALs are only for RDS.  Windows CALs are needed for accessing any service on a Windows Server host.  So any implementation using RDS requires both Windows CALs and RDS CALs.

  • Debug and release desktop app as mobile

I built an app in Flash Pro where I could easily export an AIR app for desktop and an Android app.
I have now moved it to Flash Builder and am not sure how to accomplish this.
It is currently a Desktop app that bilds a release fine.
Now, how to get an Android version from it?

The difference between an AIR application and a browser
application is very small. Take a look at the Adobe training video
    on this subject.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/videotraining/?sdid=DYOCT
In particular, the last part of day three. It's quite clear
and you can download the test setup for free. Be careful! I believe
that the Flex Builder configuration info is out of date, because
the paths for installation of LCDS have changed. I found a fix.
My notes, maybe a bit cryptic:
Make sure when you install LCDS, choose the Tomcat option.
This will install the server application.
If you're using the new version LiveCycle Data Services ES
2.6, you'll have to adjust a few things:
When you install LCDS, click the Tomcat option and continue
    with the installation.
Instead of unzipping to C:\lcds\jrun4\servers\default.. use
this folder to unzip the server.zip file instead to
    C:\lcds\tomcat\webapps\odt
    Original adobe forum post:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=60&catid=833&threadid =1387349&enterthread=y
Also, instead of using port 8700, the new version uses 8400.
    1. Start the Server: Programs > LiveCycle Data Services ES
2.6 > Start LiveCycle Data Services Server. Allow the server to
    start up.
    2. Point your browser to
    http://localhost:8400/ to test
    the start page.
    3. Your URL for this example will be
    http://localhost:8400/odt/
    Flex
I found that in many places you cannot use $(ENV_VARIABLE)
    successfully.
    Enter the exact string.
c:/lcds/tomcat/webapps/odt - for the training apps
    Always, instead of /lcds/jrun4/servers/default/odt, use
    /lcds/tomcat/webapps/odt
    Start the data base
    cd c:/lcds/sampledb
    startdb.bat

  • I have a Kobo N416  E-Reader. It is no longer supported by Kobo and is outdated. I was told that I can use Adobe Digital Editions Desktop App to download book to this Kobo N416 E-Reader . How do I do this ? Thanks

Question;  How do I download Ebooks to my Kobo N416 e-reader using Adobe Digital Editions App ? I have already tried to get help from Kobo Techs but they say the Kobo N416 E-Reader is no longer supported by Kobo and is outdated. Kobo told me to use Adobe Digital Editions to download the books I bought on Kobo to my Kobo N416 E-Reader. I have already contacted Adobe Digital Editions for help but they could not help me and told me to go to Adobe Forums.

I didnt't say that our business is using Linux Desktops. I wrote, our main clientele is. And what our customers do like to use is something we cannot control...
    >What difference does it make to you if Adobe releases a new version of Reader that is not supported on Linux?
a new Adobe Reader version that's supported on Linux would be nice. a dialogue between Adobe and Linux developers would be nice...
    >As long as the old versions can open the files correctly, that's all that matters, no?
No, not if our staff is trained to use the newest Adobe Acrobat (trainings are usually for the newest versions) and uses that to produce forms. Now the files open correctly. But what will be in some months or years? Do people working on Linux do have to print the forms then again to fill in?
So do you recommend that we stop the process of producing electronic forms and stay with paper-fill-in forms? Is that the goal of Adobe? (maybe not so clever for your "financial viability"?!?!? ... ein schuss ins eigene bein?!?!)
    >Adobe is a public company and therefore it's not going to maintain a version of its software at great cost if it's not financially viable. It's as simple as that...
So it is to be interpreted that Adobe is interested in killing Linux cause if users cannot work with let's say forms, they will have to switch to something that can do that for them...
We definitely don't want to force Windows or Mac on our clientele. So as far as I get it, we will go back to paper forms and terminate our licence agreements with Adobe and deinstall it...

  • Documents folder on Desktop and a question about trash

Hello all. My previous experience has been on Windows PCs, and as a result, I make assumptions and get frustrated on my new Macbook. I was trying to organize some of my files in the Documents folder, and at one point my errant clicking and dragging caused a folder to appear on the desktop for "Documents." Based on my previous experience with Windows, I assumed that folder was a shortcut folder, and because I like my desktop area to be uncluttered and free of icons, I moved it to the trash without thinking anything of it. I continue to organize files in "Documents" under finder as if nothing is amiss. Lo and behold, I go to empty my trash later, and I notice that it is taking some time and says "Deleting 214 of 6517 files" which clues me in to the fact that it is deleting a LOT of things, not just the one or two extraneous short cut icons I thought I had thrown in there. I hit "Stop Emptying Trash" and took a look at the damage. Many of my files in "Documents" got deleted. I moved the "Documents" folder out of the trash and on to the desktop. My questions for anyone kind enough to answer is this:
    1. Is there ANY possible way for me to recover those files? Are they really REALLY gone? If it were Windows, I would know where to look, but because I am new to this OS . . .
    2. What should I have done to remove this darn icon from my desktop? I know its always said that "everything is so intuitive on a mac" but I disagree. Especially when you have moved over from Windows. The contextual menu that comes up when I click on the icon does not allow me to "delete this shortcut." How can I delete this from the desktop but still retain the few files I have remaining?
Any and all help is appreciated. Have a great day. Thanks - b

Hi, werty. Welcome to the Discussions.
    By the numbers:
    1. See my "Data Recovery" FAQ for comprehensive advice that may help you with this problem.
    2. Based on what you describe, it sounds like you dragged your Documents folder to the desktop. Generally, the files and folders that appear on one's desktop are actually files and folders within your Home > Desktop folder. By default, your Documents folder is also within your Home folder, at the top level like the Desktop folder, i.e. Home > Documents. You should have moved the Documents folder back to the top level of your Home folder.
Mac OS X aliases to objects — roughly equivalent to Windows shortcuts to files and folders — are created by dragging an object while holding both the Command and Option keys. See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Creating an alias." An alias to an object displays a curved arrow in its lower-left corner — a badge — to differentiate itself from the actual object.
If you merely drag an object from your Home folder to your desktop, it moves that object from its former folder to the desktop, i.e. the Home > Desktop folder: it does not create an alias to that object unless you also hold Command-Option while dragging.
Finally, you wrote: "My previous experience has been on Windows PCs, and as a result, I make assumptions and get frustrated on my new Macbook."While Macs are quite intuitive, there are some significant differences between Mac OS X and Windows and an associated learning curve. In some cases, the key to switching is, as Yoda said, that "you must unlearn what you have learned."
Since you are new to Mac, you will find my "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ helpful. It lists a number of resources that you will find useful in your transition to Mac including books, online training, switching from Windows, and more.
    Good luck!

  • Noob needs help re offline desktop db app - is FB the right tool?

    Hi,
Thanks in advance for reading, and being patient with my long-winded-noobiness!
I am a self taught (read as: big gaps in my knowledge!) independent web designer/developer, with experience in developing PHP/mySQL database web-apps - both with DW, and by hand-coding.  I've been approached by a potential client asking if I could build a simple CRUD desktop application, and am trying to figure out if I can leverage my existing knowledge in doing so.  It's something I know I could develop in a snap for the web, but I'm left realizing I don't know the first thing - or even where to begin learning the first thing! - about desktop software development.  I'm hoping Flash Builder might be just the ticket for me (I'm not sure if the client will want to wait around while I learn JAVA!!), since I already own and am familiar with CS5.  I've been going over all the documentation, tutorials, etc. that I can get my hands on, but am finding my brain a little overwhelmed and frazzled, so I'm hoping one of you wonderful folk might be able to offer a simple answer!
Can I use Flash Builder / Flex to develop a strictly offline, local desktop CRUD application, but one which connects to a (local) mySQL database (ideally with PHP, since that's what I already know) - without the end-user having to separately install a local server?
If not, any suggestions?  As well as Flex, I've been looking into Java (but am finding the learning curve quite steep), and Filemaker Pro 11 Advanced (which allows you to create a runtime - but I'm finding it a bit restrictive, and would rather not have any Filemaker branding on the finished product),
In case you're wondering why I don't just convince the client to create a web-app instead, the data stored would be of a sensitive nature, and the main target demographic is baby-boomers, many of whom are still very wary of the interwebs
Thank you so much for any help you can offer!
    Cheers,
    David

Actually, I would think that Flex would be ideal using AIR with a SQLite database (the database is built in to AIR apps). However, if you've not done programming with Flex before, I won't trivialize the learning curve you have ahead of you. If you haven't already done so, go through Flex in a Week or get the latest Training from the Source for Flex 4 and get comfortable with the Flex workspace and programming environment. You'll like come to love it but it's a bit different than PHP. It would be an easier transition, I think, if you had a heavy background in JavaScript or Java so that you felt comfortable using OOP programming techniques. If you already structure your PHP programs with OO principles, it'll be an issue of getting used to the language and, if I were guessing, that might take you a month or two. That's my 2 cents worth.

  • Timing Java Apps on Portable Devices and Desktops

I am trying find an efficient way to time my Java applications running on Linux on portable devices like Pocket PCs and other hand held computers. I also need to time the running of applications on desktop and laptop computers and compare the two. I am conducting research to find out if Java runs slower on smaller processors in comparison to larger ones. I am looking for either research or a program that can help me to accomplish this. I have looked at JProbe but I would prefer an option that doesn't involve buying software. Are there any basic programing languages that offer this option? Does the JVM allow timing test to be conducted by itself? Is Java a good language to make a timing program with or should I look elsewhere. If you have any information please let me know.

Mayank, thank you for your kind assistance.
    Follow-up questions:
1 - Regarding Adobe LMS... when I go to this page
    Adobe - LMS integration solutions
and click on the 'learn more about LMS' link... it takes me to an Adobe page that tells me the page no longer exist... so may I ask you
    -  if LMS will collect students responses to a Captivate training exercise?
    -  and further allow our system to access and evaluate their responses?
    -  And, do they charge per student or what?
2 - You said "You can run Captivate without Internet . It is just you have to connect to the internet during the installation to sign in with your Adobe ID."
Does this mean a student would have to connect to the internet and install Captivate and get an Adobe ID?
I was trying to ask here if there were no internet connectivity... or limited connectivity... could a Captivate Training Exercise be placed on a PC or Tablet or Smartphone... and run at will by the student like it was an actual computer program... all without the student having to own Captivate.
    thanks again for the help.

Thinking about using Mac Mini's as desktops for 20 employee business.  Pro's Vs. Con's

Your best bet would be to buy a single 2012 MacMini Server model that you can use to manage the balance of the other machines. Either that or upgrade one of the MM's to OS X Yosemite Server . You can find information about the Server edition at:
    https://www.apple.com/osx/server/
However I would STRONGLY recommend visiting your local Apple Store and ask to speak to their business specialist, they are trained to manage customer needs such as yours.
The major advantage of using Macs over any PC is the stability of OS X itself and the overall quality of support that you will never get with HP.

  • Contact center desktop Agent stealth mode issue (8.0.2)

    So here is the deal.
We're running windows XP and the verstion of desktop agent that i've noted above.
When the agents put the desktop software in "stealth" mode it goes into the systray. However when they receive a call, it takes over priority (only way I can describe it) and does not stay in "stealth".
Has anyone come accross this? Any docs on a solution would be great.
    Thanks,

Are you saying that it regains focus (i.e. reopens)? I'm not sure how to interrupt "takes over priority".
Stealth mode should only regain focus if a team message or email is received. If it is doing this for a call it's a bug. From the CAD user guide:
The window appears as an icon in the system tray (lowerright-hand corner of your desktop, next to the systemclock) and doesn’t appear unless double-clicked or if youreceive a team message or an e-mail.
Speaking of bugs, I strongly recommend that you place a PUT order for 8.5 and apply 8.5(1)SU1. The 8.0(x) release is a train wreck and has caused multiple CAP cases.

  • Dreamweaver/Flash Training?

    Hello All,
I'd really appreciate a bit of direction from some web wizards.  I'm a graphic designer starting up my own stationery design company and I have absolutely zero knowledge of Flash, Fireworks and Dreamweaver - my skills end with InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.  I want to build my own website to a) save money and b) have more control over the design and layout.  I'm not after a web show pony either - simple, clean and functional with minimal bells and whistles.
Can anyone recommend some online training in the Adobe web design suite that would be suitable for a traditional designer crossing over into web design?  Just need to start somewhere!
    Cheers!

A good place to start is right on the Adobe website. The Adobe Developer Connection has a lot of free tutorials and videos: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/.
A quick word of warning. Your background sounds as though it's mainly print and design. Working successfully with Dreamweaver requires a knowledge of HTML and CSS. Don't try to treat Dreamweaver in the same way as InDesign or Photoshop. It's not a drag-and-drop desktop publishing type of program. It's heavily oriented towards creating clean markup, and without knowledge of HTML and CSS, you'll find it an uphill struggle.
