Detect if movie clip is visible inside browser window

Hello.
It's easy to check if movie clip is on the stage/display list.
But how to detect if movie clip is inside the visible area of browser window?
Any ideas?

if you don't know anything about the movieclip and you are not consistant with your registration points check its colorRectBounds using the bitmapdata class.  otherwise, check its x,y

  • How can you make movie clips partially visible?

    Okay, so this sounds simple, but I'm tottally lost... I'm a thirteen year old boy that has been using Flash for a little over 3 years. I program video games. I recently embarked on a game where one of the modes is to be split screen, player one gets the top half, player 2 the bottom. The promblem with this is that my game is based off of a moving background, where inorder to keep the main character centered the background moves instead of them. Becsause of this,when setting up split screen, the screen on the upper layer takes over the bottom because there would be more showing then there would be in the game: Parts would be off screen. I was wondering if there was anyway that using hitTest(s) (or some other method) you could make a movie clip partially visible/ invisible. I know the code for making something invisible when touching something else. But I was wondering if there was a way to make only the part of the movie clip touching another movie (it would have its alpha turned off... let's say it's a hitBox) or only the part of the movie clip touching the hitBox visible, invisible. Another way of looking at this is that I want a movie clip to be a small box, but inside I want their to be a huge picture. I want to make it so that when you move the picture different parts are viewable in this little box. And to make this as clear as I can... : I want to make a circle that I'll call the magnifying glass. I want to make an invisible picture that can be moved using code (I know that part). I want it so that when part of the picture is under the magnifying glass it's visible, not the hole thing, jus that circular area. Another reason I'd like to have this promblem solved is for a moving water effect. I want to make a movie clip and tween showing a square of rushing water, but without putting anything over parts of it (other than a hitBox) I want to make only a squiggly line of that water box visible. Thank you so much! =D I really hope you guys know! =D P.S. I also am currently using the trial of CS4, if that helps anything. But if it's only possible in AS3, then it's impossible to me because I use AS2 conservatively.

    Thanks... but I think you've misunderstood my question. I suppose magnifying glass wouldn't be the right word... I just wanted to explain that I want only the part of one mc touching another mc to be visible. I hope this isn't confusing. I have no need to enlarge an image. I want to make a movie clip only partially visible. Check out the fla.

  • How can I load an external SWF into a movie clip that's inside other movie clip?

    Hi.
    I creating my first flash (actionscript 3.0) website but I'm
    stuck with a visual effect I want to create.
    I have a window on my website called contentWindow. Every
    time you click a button this window is supposed to leave the stage,
    load the requested content and return to the stage.
    The sliding window is a movie clip with 83 frames, 21 to
    enter the stage, 21 to leave the stage again, 20 for nothing (its
    just to simulate the loading time) and 21 to return to the stage.
    Now my goal is, when the user clicks on a navigation button,
    the window exits the stage, loads an external SWF with the content,
    and then returns to the stage.
    I've the "window" movie clip with an instance name of
    "contentWindow". Inside there is another movie clip with an
    instance name of "contentLoader". The content that the user
    requested should appear inside the "contentLoader".
    Now, when the contentWindow leaves the stage, I get this
    error message:
    quote:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of
    a null object reference.
    at rwd_fla::MainTimeline/trigger()
    If I switch
    "contentWindow.contentLoader.addChild(navLoader);" for
    "contentWindow.addChild(navLoader);" it works fine, but the
    external SWF doesn't move with the window.
    How can I load an external SWF into a movie clip that's
    inside other movie clip?

    Hi,
    Recently, I have been putting together a flash presentation.
    And I am just wondering if the following might help you, in your
    communication with the said swf file:
    loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,
    onComplete);
    function onComplete(event:Event):void
    event.target.content.thinggy_mc.y -= 100;
    Not the best example, but this allows you to target a mc
    within an external swf file. I think if you look up this code, you
    will have an answer ;)
    Kind Regards,

  • How do I make all buttons on stage unclickable, while a certain movie clip is visible?

    Hi,
    I have a button on stage which opens a popup (movie clip is popup + several other buttons). The movie clip and the buttons on it take up most of the stage.
    The problem is that the buttons which are on the stage, and are behind the movie clip, remain clickable (you can click through the movie clip!). How may I disable this?
    Basically, I need to make it that you cannot click through the movie clip.
    Thanks in advance!
    PS I am using CS5 and AS2.

    One way would be to make the movieclip clickable.  That would make it block the other objects behind it...
         mc.onRelease = function(){ }
         mc.useHandCursor = false; // to hide the hand cursor
    Another way would be to disable the buttons while the movieclip is present...
         btn.enabled = false;
    Another way would be to build conditional code into the button clicking code to not work if the movieclip is visible.
         btn.onRelease = function(){
              if(!mc._visible){
                    // okay to do stuff

  • Movie clip not visible

    I the code below I want to add the following array of movie clips: activeLevelofTilesArray
    After I added the code below the swf plays with the following error:

    //rest not applicable..

    Hi Ned,
    Thanks, I moved the shuffle function out of activeLevelofTiles like you said and it still works. Yippeeeee
    I have 3 more issues that I need to sort out:
    I'm not doing this whole tile business correctly. As you predicted - If I trace the tile_index value I see only one tile eg. [object a]. It gives me a different one every time so I know the suffle function still works. I need for it to shuffle through the entire active level *3 so that "the tiles fall from the sky" individually generated by the timer that I have built. I guess I have to add it to an event handler.
    Although the trace (activeLevelofTilesArray[tile_index]); worked, I still can not see even the one object generated in the swf file - I think this will solve itself when issue 3 is solved
    After I descovered issues 1 and 2 above, I attempted to declare the tile_index variable outside of the loop. I must have done it wrong or incompletely because I get the following error messages on all the lines I used tile_index:
                             1120: Access of undefined property tile_index.
    Below is the code now:
    function tileIndex():void   //this must be wrong because it gives me that error code and as you predicted only gives one value (I want te whole lot times 3)
                                    for (var i: Number  =0; i < activeLevelofTilesArray.length*3; i++)
                                var tile_index = (i%activeLevelofTilesArray.length);
                        function activeLevelofTiles():void
                            activeLevelofTilesArray = letterLevels.shift();
                            shuffleTiles(activeLevelofTilesArray);
                                tileTimer.start();
                                trace(activeLevelofTilesArray);
                                activeLevelofTilesArray[tile_index].x = 399;
                                activeLevelofTilesArray[tile_index].y= 30;
                                addChild (activeLevelofTilesArray[tile_index]);  //maybe the addChild will work (issue 2) when the tile_index problem is solved
                                trace("Letters should run");
                                trace (activeLevelofTilesArray[tile_index]);

  • In the time line, cutaways and titles are supposed to be linked on the top side of movie clips in the time line window.  I don't know what I did, but now they are linked to the bottom side.  How do I get them up to the top where they belong?

    I'm working on a movie in FCP and using cutaways and titles in many places in the timeline.  While working on a movie 2 days ago, and I don't know what I did, all the cutaways and titles are now linked to the movie clips from below rather than above.  When I "grab" them and drag them up to the top-side, as soon as I "release", they go back down.  Along the menu bar, I've check the "view", "modify", "clips", etc., looking for any thing that might refer to appearance of the time line.  What must I do to get the cutaways and titles back on top where they belong?  The audio clips remained properly-linked to the time line and play properly.  The cutaways and titles can be seen but do not play.

    The cutaways and titles should be linked above the timeline clips, not below

  • Add movie clip in a New Native Window

    Dear Friends,
    i have created an air application, which open a new window on
    click of a button and load the movie clip or a scroll pane with
    some items in it. it is working fine but the size is very big than
    the actual size of the movie clip. it shows like zoomed picture. it
    looks odd and i got sturck up. please help me to show the correct
    size of the scroll pane which i added (i used --
    nativewindow.stagge.addchild) in native window.
    Thanks and advance,
    Rahimhaji

    You must set the stage scaleMode property to noScale. (If you
    want to use one of the other scale modes -- even though there are
    better ways to achieve the same end in AIR, see the " About Stage
    properties" section of:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/flex/quickstart/launching_windows.html
    The article is about a Flex application, but the stage
    properties section applies equally to Flash. )

  • Tooltips not working inside Embedded Movie Clip but works on main stage

    Hey,
    I  have a movie clip that is a navigation window and I am trying to have some tooltip hover over the buttons inside the navigation window.
    If I create a button on the main stage it hovers and works fine but if I create the same clip inside the embedded navigation window the tooltip does not show up.  I do not have any error messages but it is not there that I can see.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Even you place your mc within another clip for example NavWindowMC:
    Write the code in the maintimeline as
    import fl.transitions.easing.*;
    import fl.transitions.*;
    NavWindowMC.mc.addEventListener("mouseOver", mouseRollOver);
    NavWindowMC.mc.addEventListener("mouseOut", mouseRollOut);
    NavWindowMC.mc.addEventListener("mouseMove", mouseMove1);
    var tooltip:Tooltip = new Tooltip();
    tooltip.txt.text = "Design";
    tooltip.x = stage.mouseX;
    tooltip.y = stage.mouseY - NavWindowMC.mc.height;
    function mouseRollOver(e:MouseEvent):void {
        addChild(tooltip);
        var myTween:Tween = new Tween(tooltip, "alpha", Regular.easeIn, 0, 1, 0.5, true);
    function mouseRollOut(e:MouseEvent):void {
        removeChild(tooltip);
    function mouseMove1(e:MouseEvent):void {
        tooltip.x = stage.mouseX;
        tooltip.y = stage.mouseY - NavWindowMC.mc.height;

  • Automatic scale of Flash movie to fit different screen/browser sizes

    Hi guys,
    I am a mid level Flash user. I have a online portfolio site which I have had running for around 4 years.
    The site at the moment is in its 4th incarnation as I keep growing tired of the layout and design and keep striving to improve it visually. The previous designs have always been at the standard 800x600px or slightly bigger. So when viewed on the majority of different screen sizes and browsers the site was always fully visible at 100%.
    For the latest redesign I've opted for a much larger site size of 1024x768px. This is obviously alot clearer for the user and looks great when viewed on a 19" monitor and above. I for example have a 27" iMac so the site in my opinion looks great.
    The problem I have is when the site is viewed on a smaller screen 17" and below, laptops etc. Due to the size of my Flash site if I view it on a laptop screen the side and bottom scroll bars obviously appear on the browser. I want to know if there is anyway that I can publish the Flash site so that whenever the site is viewed on whatever sized screen or browser it is always seen at 100% without scrollbars.
    I have played about with the publish settings but can't seem to find a way to do this. I have also downloaded SWFFit (Flash Fit) but i'm not sure whether this will do the trick?
    My site can be viewed at:
    www.nineteeneightyone.co.uk
    Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    I was a little confused when you mentioned wanting to "scale" the site and then you mentioned that "the site was always fully visible at 100%".
    Now I understand that when you say 100%, you simply meant that all of the site was visible at the same time... no scrolling needed.
    "whenever the site is viewed on whatever sized screen or browser it is always seen at 100% without scrollbars".
    By this I assume you mean that the site is fully visible? not that you want to view the site at !00%... correct?
    Typically when discussing Flash scaling, 100% mean 100% of the browser window, and has nothing to do with how much of the site is visible inside that window.
    When looking at Flash scaling, there are a number of things to consider, width, height, aspect ratio, and the use/no use of scrollbars.
    Using a size of 1024 X 768 is a good example of a size that will require scrollbars or downscaling in order to display in a Web browser on a  1024 X 768 monitor. A 1024 X 768 will only display about 1000px or less in width and of course with the Web browser address bars etc, a height of 600 or so would be more realistic. So by default, the size requires both horizontal and vert scroll bars when viewed on a 1024 X 768 monitor.
    So what would be required to display the entire site without scrollbars? Well in this case, since only 600 px in height are available, the height has to be downscaled about 78% of the original height... so to maintain the same aspect ratio (the ratio of width to height), then the width was also be downscaled to about 78% or original or about 800 px wide... OK that's fine, but because the monitor is about 1000px wide, there will now be about 100 px unused space on the right and the left.
    By default, Flash likes to maintain that aspect ratio, so that round things stay round and square things stay square. It just means that as you increase or decrease width or height, the corresponding dimension will also change.. decrease height.. and width decreases also.
    Here is an old post that illustrates Flash scaling and how aspect ratio can be maintained or distorted:
    Here are examples of different scaling parameters available in the Publish settings. You can also add these parameters directly in the html (<param name="scale" value="noscale"). All the examples replace the actual Flash dimensions with 100% for both width and height (width="100%" height="100%"). These examples use the old <object> and <embed> to illustrate the different ways to scale Flash. Once you understand how it works I’d recommend that you use swfobject to place the Flash in your final project.
    View the source code for each page to see the full code.
    http://www.cidigitalmedia.com/tutorials/scale/exact_fit.html
    "exactFit" scales the file to fit exactly within the confines of the screen, irregardless if the movie becomes consequently distorted. The original aspect ratio is not maintained. So round things are not round and squares are not square.
    http://www.cidigitalmedia.com/tutorials/scale/noScale.html
    "noScale" is the default setting, and causes the movie to be displayed at the originally designed dimensions.
    http://www.cidigitalmedia.com/tutorials/scale/no_border.html
    "noBorder" causes the movie to be scaled to what ever dimensions are needed to have no border surrounding the movie within the player, which consequently could result in some of the movie being cut off from view. In other words, the movie will maintain the original aspect ratio and will fill the screen completely. But if the movie has to be streched wider to fill both sides of the screen, it will also stretch taller, but then some of the top and the bottom of the movie may be cut off from view.
    http://www.cidigitalmedia.com/tutorials/scale/show_all.html
    "showAll" scales the movie to the size of the screen (which could cause pixelation if the file contains raster information), the difference between showAll and exactFit is that showAll mantains initial movie size proportions. Because it maintains the original aspect ratio, there can be space to the sides or the top and bottom. But everything always shows and they are not distorted. But notice the photo in the center, it becomes pixilated at larger screen resolutions.
    The trickiest part of trying to go full screen is that it’s difficult to make the Flash wider without making it taller also, that is, to maintain the correct proportions or aspect ratio of everything on the stage. These methods are just simple scaling accomplished with html. There are also methods to dynamically scale the stage and it’s elements using Actionscript… but that’s a much more complex undertaking.

  • Please help! first website! movie clip placed on main timeline wont play!

    Hi! if any one could please help me it would be greatly
    appreciated!
    So im trying to make my first website in flash and ive ran
    into a problem. I have the main movie, my main time line. I have a
    few animations going on in this that were all created in that main
    time line. those work fine. however, i created two new movie clips
    (still inside the same .fla file) and animated them with thier own
    time line. I then thought you could just drag and drop these movie
    clips onto your main time line and they would play inside the
    movie. but when i press ctrl + enter, the dont play!
    here are some points of intrest.
    my main movie (the main time line) is 130 frames.
    the movie clips i made inside the same .fla file are between
    400 and 600 frames.
    i placed both new movie clips on the 130th frame in the time
    line with their own layers.
    also there is a layer for actions on the 130th that has
    stop();
    i thought that maybe the time line had to be as long as those
    movie clips i created and so i extended it but they still didnt
    play.
    im thinking action script is involved? please help me im
    getting pretty frustrated and im sure there is something simple to
    achieve this.
    here is a link where you can download the source files im
    using. if you open the file the two movie clips i created are
    called front two and front one and are layers with the same name.
    this board wont let me fully post my link cause the last word
    in it is s*h*i*t* so youll have to type it in your browser. its
    http://public.me.com/matts*h*i*t*
    (just remove the asterisks)
    also i noticed that my file is huge. i used photoshop to
    create everything and them imported it into flash. is there a way i
    can reduce this size?
    thank you sooo much! please help!
    -Matt

    Hey Matt,
    I'll take a look at your file, but as a general rule, a
    movieclip's timeline plays automatically when it is first
    instantiated. Instatiated means its first frame where "it exists"
    on the timeline that contains it. So the layer that holds your
    movieclip animation, needs to extend the length of the timeline you
    want that movieclip to "exist". Other than that rule, the frames
    don't NEED to match the frames inside said movieclip.
    So, if movieclips play automatically, and yours isn't, there
    must be something either stopping the movieclips timeline, or your
    movieclip isn't existing on the timeline because the layer that
    holds it, doesn't have keyframes the length you need it to.
    Yeah optimizing your sprites (2d graphical elements), and
    using vector when you need to (if you don't know the difference
    between raster and vector, google it) will significantly lower your
    outputted .swf file size.
    Edit: After looking at your file, your movieclips are not
    playing (well, they're technically playing, just not showing up)
    because your masker layer has multiple objects on it. A masker
    layer (not to be confused with the maskee layer, the layer being
    masked) needs to have only one object on it, or else you break the
    mask. The grey border of your mask movieclip needs to be deleted
    before your animation will play.

  • Button within a movie clip not working

    Hiya,
    I have a movie clip within my swf website that is basically
    an icon that you roll over to produce the menu. The movie clip has
    coding inside it to produce the rollover effect. This is as
    follows:
    stop();
    this.onEnterFrame = function(){
    if(rewind == true){
    prevFrame();
    this.onRollOver = function(){
    rewind = false;
    play();
    this.onRollOut = function(){
    rewind = true;
    Whilst this coding works fine for this movie clip, for some
    reason the buttons within the movie clip that appear as you
    rollover them will not work when pressed. I am trying to get them
    to navigate the main timeline, i.e. coding as follows:
    on (release) {
    _parent.gotoAndPlay("home")
    _parent should be correct, I've tried it without and with
    _parent._parent however still it has no effect. From what I can see
    everything should be working fine.
    Is there some reason why buttons will not work within this
    sort of roll over effect movie clip?
    Thanks for your help.

    you can't assign mouse handlers to a parent movieclip and
    expect a child movieclip to respond to mouse events: the parent
    will intercept those events.
    to remedy, either assign all your mouse handlers on the child
    generation movieclips or use a hitTest() for one of the
    generations.

  • A movie in side another movie clip

    I have a movie clip(A) thats inside another movieclip(B). Im
    trying to use movieclipA's _x and _y but it gets all messed up.
    Does someone know how to fix this.

    What do you mean, get's all messed up? If clip B is on the
    current timeline
    then you can get to clip A's properties by going:
    trace(clipB.clipA._x);
    trace(clipB.clipA._y);
    or even:
    var ca = clipB.clipA;
    trace(ca._x);
    trace(ca._y);

  • Boundary for movie clips following the mouse

    here's my AS...
    myInterval = setInterval(KBMOglobal,15);
    function KBMOglobal () {
    KBMOglobal1._x -= (KBMOglobal1._x - _xmouse)/10;
    KBMOglobal1._y -= (KBMOglobal1._y - _ymouse)/10-2;
    ok, so my movie clip follows the mouse around, with a small
    delay and the y axis is slightly lowered. the stage of my movie is
    380 x 640. does anyone have any suggestions on how to create a
    boundary, equal to the size of my stage, that does not let the
    movie clips that follow the mouse extend past? does that even make
    any sense? essentially, i would like the movie clips to follow the
    mouse, the entire movie clip stay visible on the stage. because of
    the positioning of the items on the stage that initiate this
    function, i only have to consider the width of each movie clip,
    which luckily is a constant = 200. does that make any sense? let me
    try this all again....
    how do adjust the above function so that the movie clip,
    KBMOglobal1 (which has a width of 200) stay within the horizontal
    limits of the stage (which is 380)?
    thanks for your time and to everyone in this forum that has
    been so very helpful with all my questions in this project so far,
    yall rock!

    horizontally.
    would you please be so kind to explain what your script is
    doing? because i'm not a total idiot, i realize i could probably
    replace 380 with 760 (double the width of the stage) and it would
    work as expected. however, if you could spare the time to explain
    what the following two lines are doing, step by step....i'll give
    you my first born.....
    KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x<0?KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x=0:KBMOglobalGenera lCancelDispatch._x;
    KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x>380-KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._width?KBMOglobalG eneralCancelDispatch._x=380-KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._width:KBMOglobalGeneralCancel Dispatch._x;
    thanks again for your time!
    do you know ?: operator? it is like if...else... statements,
    when we say:
    somethingIsTrue ? do1() : do2();
    it is exactly same meaning like:
    if (somethingIsTrue) {
    do1();
    } else {
    do2();
    Now, we look at this line:
    KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x<0?
    KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x=0:
    KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x;
    it is same like
    if (KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x<0) {
    KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x=0
    } else {
    KBMOglobalGeneralCancelDispatch._x

  • Flash CS4- Movie clips suddenly invisible on stage? (Same file OK on other comps/CS5)

    Flash CS4 had been working regularly on my Macbook Pro (Intel - Tiger) for a while, and then suddenly, I opened a file and all the movie clips went from being visible "stills" to invisible and represented only by an "o". I have tried settings, preferences, even uninstall/reinstall, but somehow my settings or something got messed up and I can't view movie clips on the stage.
    I have tried a variety of different .fla files and none allow movie clips to be visible on the stage.The files were created in CS4.
    This is true for movie clips that have 1 frame to many frames.
    When I Publish or Test Movie, the clip is visible and normal, but it is impossible to edit the file without being able to see the movie clips.
    I know that the issue is with my installation of Flash/settings being messed up, not with the file(s) because when opened on other computers (CS4 and CS5), movie clips are visible on the stage, as they should be.
    Example below: In Flash CS4, the stage just has "o"s where I used to be able to see my movie clip, but in the Test Movie, everything is there. To be clear, I could see the movie clips in this exact file, and then the next time I opened it I could no longer see them.
    I am hoping there is an obvious solution that I have overlooked. Help is appreciated in designer-friendly (non-developer) terms.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    Can you please try a few things for me? This will help us narrow down the issue.
    Test 1: Switch from ActionScript 3.0 to ActionScript 2.0.
    1. Open up the file where you see the "o" instead of your movieclips.
    2. Go to File > Publish Settings.
    3. Switch player target to ActionScript 2.0.
    ** Did your movieclips reappear or is it still showing "o"?
    Test 2: Delete user configuration folder and recreate preferences files.
    1. Quit Flash if it is running.
    2. Delete the following 6 files:
    Volume/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/FlashCS4
    /Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Flash CS4 Preferences
    /Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Flash 10 MRU
    /Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.flsh-10.0.plist
    /User/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Flash CS4/
    /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/FlashAuthor.cfg
    3. Relaunch Flash and these files will be recreated.
    ** Did this solve your issue?
    Please let me know. Thanks!

  • Intro movie-clip

    Hie,
    i've created an intro under CSflash5 for my website, and i would like to export it into a movie clip, if you see what i mean.
    Usually people create them intro movie clip and once inside begins to elaborate them intro, i just do the reverse, or rather, i just do the opposite.
    thank you very much for your help !

    you can't export a movieclip.
    you can create a movieclip of your intro and you can copy that movieclip and you can paste that movieclip into another fla.
