Development in case of upgrade

Dear Experts,
I am new to BI.I got task to modify one query for clients purpose. My doubts is how to start these developments in below scenario.I am a bit scared as I am new to BI and heard so many procedures and how careful we need to be while doing this in a development system where number of projects are going on.
My scenario:
My clients landscape has DEV,QUAL,PROD.thatsall.He have upgraded his DEV and QUAL recently and PROD will be upgraded next week.He created one copy of DEV,known as DEV2.He intimated us that whatever developments we do in DEV,we have to do same stuff in DEV2 also,as they need to be in sync.So far I understand everything.
Now my job is to do little modification in one existing query and make it available in production. My questions about this process are:
1.Can I open the existing query in DEV and modify it or do I need to create new one(the old one no longer needed)? After that I am thinking of running the query and seeing if the RESULT matches the expected result.
2.How do I get the objects done in Step.1 into copy development system DEV2?Is there any procedure to transfer or is it just to do the whole stuff again in DEV2?Its very little modification,by the way.
3.After we are done with doing deveopments in DEV and DEV2 and seeing that we get expected results, how do we move forward from here.As I read in some docs from google,we need to transport stuff to QUAL.how do we go from here?
    a) whats the exact procedure...do we assign any transport number or package or things like that...because I read about these things in docs...can anyone explain in detail taking this scenario.
b)whats the order of transporting things in this scenario of query modification? As I understood from docs,we have to intimate BASIS team about our transports. At what stage do we do this intimation?
c)after transport do the transported query just appear with modifications?what happens to old query?
d)do Do we call User now to come and test the result? If he OKs we transfer the Query to PROD from QUAL.Is that right?
e)any other precautions we need to take in this procedures?
4.What if the query we have modified now in DEV,donot exists in PROD?I mean while we are doing modifications in DEV someone have deleted the same querx in PROD.....Is it ok to still transport it to PROD from QUAL?
Thanks alot for your patience.Excuse my basic questions,I am new to BI.
Rgds,
SChand.

1.Can I open the existing query in DEV and modify it or do I need to create new one(the old one no longer needed)? After that I am thinking of running the query and seeing if the RESULT matches the expected result.
****I would copy your existing query to a new one for safety reasons...so you always have a backup query in case something goes wronh. But yoiu need to adapt the existing query to make it available in prod
2.How do I get the objects done in Step.1 into copy development system DEV2?Is there any procedure to transfer or is it just to do the whole stuff again in DEV2?Its very little modification,by the way.
*****you need manually recreate in dev2
3.After we are done with doing deveopments in DEV and DEV2 and seeing that we get expected results, how do we move forward from here.As I read in some docs from google,we need to transport stuff to QUAL.how do we go from here?
a) whats the exact procedure...do we assign any transport number or package or things like that...because I read about these things in docs...can anyone explain in detail taking this scenario.
****go to the transport connection in the WB (RSA1), choose query elements and find your query. drag and drop to right hand side and hit the red/yellow truck. this will create your transport request
b)whats the order of transporting things in this scenario of query modification? As I understood from docs,we have to intimate BASIS team about our transports. At what stage do we do this intimation?
****for transporting queries, yoiu don't need basis, unless you lack the authorizations (this depends of the customer)
c)after transport do the transported query just appear with modifications?what happens to old query?
*****in prod your query will have now the modif you did in dev...the old query is overwritten..;if you have made a copy for safety as suggested before, you have the old version still available in dev
d)do Do we call User now to come and test the result? If he OKs we transfer the Query to PROD from QUAL.Is that right?
****depends on the way of working...if changes are made on request of one single user, you call him/het and he/she can test...if on the other hand you know in which cases the result was wrong, you can test any of this cases, and you can see for yourself if the data is correct now
e)any other precautions we need to take in this procedures?
****not really, transporting queries is quite straight forward
4.What if the query we have modified now in DEV,donot exists in PROD?I mean while we are doing modifications in DEV someone have deleted the same querx in PROD.....Is it ok to still transport it to PROD from QUAL?
****yes..., the query will be recreated with the import
*****this should give you enough info to start. go ahead, and close this general thread. once you encounter problems in one of the above steps, search the forum for the solution. IF you don't find any, post one specific question.

  • Any experience while buying Adobe Developer Support case(s)?

    Hi,
Adobe instead of answering Acrobat SDK related questions properly in this Developer's forum tries to push me/my company to become an Adobe Solution Partner and buy Adobe Developer Support case(s) to resolve all undocumented or better to say not fully documented as it should Acrobat SDK issues.
Now, I'd like to ask other developers here - do you really have any experience while buying those Developer Support cases? What is the cost of each separate one? Under Silver Solution Partner program you could get 7 cases, but need to pay about 1700 EUR, which is really huge cost.
And what is a separate Developer Support case? For example - solving a problem with Cyrillic text output and possible memory leak with JPEG generation (both issues reported by me and unresolved in this forum) will require 2 cases or could be solved via just a 1?
I'll really appreciate your answers on this topic. If someone from Adobe Sales could look at this - it would be great as well.

Do you follow all my recent postings in this forum? If so - then you should understand that I don't expect to pay Adobe anything ahead (even with some mysterious REFUND possibility) in regards to its SDK usage. Otherwise - I expect Adobe to promote its SDK to all possible developers worldwide and tell everybody, that its state of the art piece of software and if we find anything suspicious in functionality - it will be fixed right away.
Of course I could switch to some Open Source PDF generation libraries (I'm aware at least of 2 of them), but why should I if I'm partnering with big customer who has Acrobat Professional Volume Licensing in place and thus it's already proven fact that Acrobat Professional license is bought and Adobe got money for that already.
Let me compare with IBM once again - they have such nice Design Partner Program in place (where my company is actively participating for last 3 years) and it costs my company 0 cents to use latest versions of some products and report issues for everything as well as APIs. Well, there is proper NDA for that, but Adobe could have that as well and I see no reason why not.
So, if this forum is mostly for some enthusiasts rather that for serious developers - then I could understand all those Adobe restrictions. But otherwise - really not.

  • IdeaCentre Q150 - 4081-2GU Opening Case to Upgrade CRU FRU Parts

New to the discussion so hope someone can help me with removing the case cover to install CRU / FRU upgrades.
    Have new Q150 model 4081-2GU
    machine type 100563
    configuration number 57130901
Reading the Hardware Maintenance Manual V2.0 -
    http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/UserGuide/Guide_show_1275624919250.html
I can see the exploded view on page 23 and on page 27 in step 6 it says that after removing the six screws that secure the computer cover to the chassis in step 7 "Slide the computer cover out to remove it."
That doesn't seem to work or at least it is not easy. The case "cracks" open a little but it also appears there is a "lip" all around that will not allow the cover to "slide out".
Anybody know if it slides back away from the rear ports? Up from the bottom where the stand connects or ????
If someone has opened their case to upgrade hard drive or memory I would appreciate some guidance so I don't damage anything.
With the nVidia chip, HDMI port, VESA bracket and a multimedia remote seems like a cute HTPC and will make a good addition to my Thinkpad family (many since '92) if I can only get the case open to increase the HD size and max out the memory.
thanx in advance for any help .. and don't forget - the model - machine type and configuration number are at the top of this request. (And if you answer from Malaysia - Hey is for horses and Hello is for people ;-] )
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I use guitar picks for "cracking" things like that open.

  • Integrating old development files into LR Upgrades

Every time I upgrade lightroom I lose all or most of the development settings for my photographic image files. I back-up regularly and spend hours/days redoing say 40-60% again.
How do I upgrade and keep all of the previously developed image files as was. I am afraid to open a new catalogue in case those that I have sent days redoing are lost and others gained.
I have just successfully upgraded to LR 3.4 but the problem I have as always is as explained above. There are many saved back-up files where the information is but I do not know what to do to integrate these development files. There are LR1 and LR2 and LR3 libraries.
Thanks I am sure it is simple and something I should have learnt by now.

    Sharpis wrote:
How do I put the original NEF files in touch with their setting/development file bearing in mind no one catalogue has all of the add-on (development) files. Please do not admonish me for getting in to this mess. I am not aware of being prompted at any upgrade LR2 to LR3. I am where I am and I would like some help to avoid having to redo about anothe 17k images again.
Thank you. Ask any question. I am in the throws of opening the whole lot up with a previously saved ircat but I am not sure if I am going to lose what I have just done to repair half of my D2X NEFs. That is also saved.
    Hi Sharpis,
So I guess from your rephrased question that you have all settings somewhere in several lrcatalogs, so we can forget about my concerns of sidecar-xmp.
Well you cannot automatically merge different settings from different catalogs for 1 image. The best chance you have is to juxtapose all different variants that you have as "virtual copies" in your current catalog, so you can easily compare them and adapt / retain what you like best. In doing so you might want to check your Lightroom knowledge about synchronizing settings.
The first thing to do, so you will not loose anything in case you would do something wrong: search all catalogs in which you might have viable settings, and copy them  (via your Operating system, so in Mac Finder)  to a safe place out of reach, not to touch them. Just so you could revert to them. You will not need, but just to be sure since you are so scared to loose something.
Then take the old catalogs and make sure that you clearly know which one is about which.
Especially important is your current 3.4 catalog, which I would rename into "LR3 Master Catalog" (do the same for your previews folder, so its name needs to be identical in the string part before " Previews.lrdata").
If your other catalogs do not have clear naming, please do the same - rename each of them into something meaningful and do it accordingly for their Previews-folders.
Then you do as described in my last post:
You have your  "LR3 Master Catalog" open and you import into it from each of the other viable catalogs.
    Citing myself from last post:
The system will check if there are duplicate photos, which probably  are all of them, so it asks just about metadata. Select from the  drop-down choice "metadata and develop settings only" and tick "preserve  old settings as a virtual copy".
LR will then create a virtual  copy (VC) for every entry in your old catalog.
    This may look  cluttered.
But from there you can more easily compare what you  like better and synchronize some settings specifically between virtual  copies. Afterwards you will have one redundant VC which you can delete.
Doing  so will ensure that your latest LR version-catalog will have the  settings you like best from all LR-versions.
Your only risk is cluttering your current catalog with multiple virtual copies, but there is no risk to loose anything (as long you tick "metadata and develop settings only" !).
Still a lot of work, but on the safe side.

  • How should an application developer handle Adobe AIR upgrades on Windows and Mac?

    Hi,
My questions concern Windows 7 (and later) and Mac OS X:
Is Adobe AIR upgraded automatically? In other words, by default (if the user does not uncheck something during installation), is there a service/polling mechanism that checks for a new version of Adobe AIR and recommends an update to the user?
What happens if a user has an older version of Adobe AIR installed, and my application requires a more recent Adobe AIR version? Do I, as an application developer, have to do something or is it handled by Adobe AIR automatically?
Have Adobe AIR introduced many backward compatibility issues in the past? Is it possible for a user to have multiple versions of Adobe AIR installed at the same time? Can I, as an application developer, specify that this exact version of Adobe AIR is needed by my application?
If there sometimes are backwards compatibility issues with Adobe AIR. Is there a way for me as an application developer to try out a new version before it is released to the normal users? In other words, is there a way for me to make sure that my application works with the next version of Adobe AIR before it is released by the normal channels to the general user base?
Is there something else which should be taken into consideration when it comes to Adobe AIR upgrades and versioning issues?

Well we would suffer especially much from two of the drawbacks listed at Packaging a captive runtime bundle for desktop computers:
The AIR in-browser API for installing and launching an AIR application from a web page is not supported
AIR update API and framework are not supported
We are using the Air application as a solution for printing, which is invoked using the AIR in-browser API when the user clicks the "Print" button. I would guess the route to make it work with a captive runtime (which was something new to me), which I see as a normal stand alone application, would be to register a specific MIME type with the OS and each Web browser which is handled by our print application. And let a file of our new MIME type contain the information passed in the in-browser invocation at the moment. That would trigger the application when a user clicks Print.
We also use the AIR update API to update our application. Being without it means that we would need to create our own update mechanism.
These two paths to handle the given drawbacks above would mean a lot of work for us. Especially as we want to support both Windows and Mac. It might be worth it if the answers to my questions in the original post indicates that we can expect another type of problems instead.
I am still interested in answers to my original questions. But we will certainly take the captive runtime approach into consideration. As I didn't know about it, I really appreciate your answer!

  • Old Develop Module in new upgrade LR5

I am trying out the 30 day LR 5 trial to see if I would like to upgrade.  For some reason my Develop Module contains the same tools as my older version, though I know I shouldn't even see a "brightness" tool...  How do I fix this and get the new tools so I can continue my 30 day trial?

You are probably viewing photos edited in Process Version 2010.
Update the photos to PV 2012 and access the new tools
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/develop-module-options.html
Be warned that there are big differences between PV2010 and PV2012 and you may not always like the changes.
    http://digital-photography-school.com/understanding-lightroom-process-versions
So it's up to you whether you want to convert all existing photos to PV2012 in one step - or if you want to convert them one/several at a time.
New photos imported into LR5 will automatically be edited in PV2012 so there will be no conversion required and the tools in the Develop module will be the new ones as expected.

  • AFter five years of problem free use, my mixer pots have suddenly developed a case of the jitters -- that is they jiggle up and down within just a tiny range, sometimes one pot, sometimes several, no perceivable pattern, and can't move them up or down.

After five years of problem free usage, my Logic Pro mixer pots have suddenly come down with palsy -- that is, jiggle up and down within a tiny range  -- sometimes one, sometimes several, etc., no pattern that I've been able to grok. And any pot that is jiggling can't be moved up or down. I tried circumventing my 828 converter and coming straight out of my desktop iMac OS X, but that didn't help. I also moved a Logic midi file over to my laptop, and when I played it on Logic the jitters were there too. Anyone ever develop this bug, and if so, do you have a fix? Could it be a corrupted program?
    David Shire  [email protected]

Have you recently used any midi controller with Logic.. such as a hardware controller or even an iPad app.
If you used an iOS app, power down (Not just put to sleep) your iOS device and see what happens.. If that fixes it you are running an iOS controler in the background and so you will need to close it..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
Failing that, quit Logic and trash the Control Surface pref file.... restart Logic and see if that cures it..
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.

  • Spinning ball in many cases since upgrading

Finder windows sluggish, Mail sluggish, tab browing in Safari sluggish, Word 2011 very sluggish, all since upgrading to Lion and the recent 10.7.1 upgrade changed nothing.  Any ideas?

I'm pretty certain there's nothing wrong with the computer. It's probably software related and has something to do with either some old software or preferences that transferred during the upgrade. But how to identify that is my problem.  I use many 3rd party programs upon startup such as iKey, Launchbar, Butler, Cloud, WindowMover, Msg Filer, etc.  I suspect it's one of these or some .plist file.

  • ABAP developer part in an upgrade project

    Dear experts,
can anyone explain me the role of an abaper in an upgrade project...
    thanks in advance.

    Upgrade Project:
The Upgrade Project is to upgrade the SAP implementation version to the latest version of the SAP R/3 released by the SAP.
Generally the Upgrade Projects are initiated because SAP has suggested to the clients that few of the components delivered by it are no longer supported in the old version. Hence for the Support and Performance reasons it will suggest the clients to upgrade its SAP R/3 version to the latest release.
In upgrade projects we will have to revive all the BDC programs and implement the BAPI's that are given. Because the BDC is a Screen Dependent Object and the SAP might have made changes in Screen Fields, or may have removed the screen totally. So to achieve the functionality with BDC we have to deliver new BDC program or implement BAPI'S instead of BDC.

  • BW upgrade - development box

    Hi,
we will be upgrading development followed by quality,
In norm cases, do we delete the data loads in BW development to ensure the size is smaller or is that ok to let the data remain in the development system during the bw upgrade?
apppreciate if anyone could comment on this.
    thank you.
    Regards
    Maili

    Hi,
Data deletion is not needed in case of upgrade, the simple reason behind that is if you think of upgrading production system and deleting all the current data then situation will become very uncomfortable so don't worry about data and simply go for system upgrade.

  • Upgrade from SQL server developer 2008 R2 to SQL Server developer 2012

    Hi,
We have bought 5 licenses of SQL server developer 2012.
This licenses provided us an option to use SQL server 2008 R2. And we have been using 2008 R2 till now.
But now we want to upgrade to SQL server developer 2012 edition
I want to know the process for up-gradation. When I looked at the licensing portal, it says "This product does not require a product key"
    My questions are:
    1) Should I download the 2012 version from licensing center and pass the downloaded copy to respective team members?
    2) Can the team member download the SQL server 2012 developer edition from Microsoft site and install it on their machines?
    3) Do we need to first un-install 2008 R2?
    4) How the licensing can be managed in cases of products which say "This product does not require a product key.", i.e. how can I make sure that no more than 5 installations are done by the team
    Thanks

    1. Developer edition has license associated with it .And yes you can download it if you have subscription. But please be informed that you cannot use Developer edition in production, its not allowed and illegal.
2.You can upgarde from SQL server 2008 R2 to 2012 developer edition by Inplace upgrade method ,you can also follow side by side approach. For side by side approach you have to get new box ,intall OS,then install SQL server 2012 ,move logins and jobs and move
databases by backup restore. You must see supported upgrades
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(v=sql.110).aspx
3.No not ins any case ,please dont do that
4.Licensing question should best be asked with Microsoft licensing expert.
reg process of upgarde first run upgrade advisor and look for error if any. Then run SQL server 2012  setup and in maintenance section select edition upgrade, other process is same as SQL Server installtion

  • BW Upgrade and in parallel development

    hi ,
I have some doubts abt in parallel development with bi upgrade.hope someone could clear my doubts on this.
Currently, I'm working on a development request  that involves ODS/Cube/Infoobject change. All this are done in dev 3.5x.
Parallely, there is another bi team that's working on the upgrade activity which will upgrade this bw 3.5x to Bi7.0. Issue is that no freeze on development done during this upgrade activity. both development and upgrade is being carried out in parallel by 2 teams.
    questions :
1.can anyone highlight the impact of this parallel activity
2.if i choose to stop the development work now temporarily, can i use the same transport request number which was generated in BW 3.5 dev and transport to new BI 7.0 production?  or should i choose to recollect the objects again in BI 7.0 environment and continue development after the upgrade activity completed?
3.will i face any compatibility issue later if i stop the development work half way now?
4.Is there any other risk of in parallel dev and upgrade?
Hope someone could advice me on this.
    Thank you.

Infoproviders are version independent.  While BW 7.x has different names for ODS (DSO) and additional features, there is no 'conversion' process per se at the infoprovider level. BW 7.x does provide new data transformation and data flow methodologies, but the BW 3.x methods are still functional in the BW 7.x environment.
However.. you will need to release and migrate your 3.x development transports before you perform the BASIS level conversion programs. You will not be able to 'keep them open'. So based on this factor alone, you will need to either
    A) create and manage a dual development environment.
    B) establish a development "Freeze" schedule that follows your overall development program.
When we converted from BW 3.5 to 7.0, we established a freeze.
