DHCP and SMB service failing

We have a X server with 10.5.5 installed.
This server is our main server with active settings for OD, SMB, DNS, DHCP and AFP.
At variable intervals the DHCP and SMB service gets corrupt.
here's excerpt from the server log:

Now this only happens when we leave the server admin app open on the specific server.
If we close the application the server seems to be working fine (for at least 3 weeks...).
We even reinstalled the server from scratch, but this problem is persistent...
Is this a bug en the Server Admin app?

Hi
Get into the habit of not leaving either of the two applications (Server Admin and WorkGroup Manager) open. Especially Server Admin. When you've done with the application quit out of it. If you can develop your command line skills (man serveradmin is useful), try and use these where possible instead. Best advice I can give you.
If your server is not configured as Advanced please ignore this advice.

  • Non-ISP DDNS with Apple DHCP and DNS Services

I have two questions about Dynamic DNS (DDNS) as it applies to Apple's DNS and DHCP services within my home network. I am not talking about DDNS in the context of making my external-facing router available by a domain name on the Internet using the dynamically-assigned IP from my ISP.
Starting with Snow Leopard Server, I attempted to use Apple's DNS and DHCP services (I have the firmware-based DHCP service in my router turned off.) The difficulty I immediately faced was that Apple's DHCP implementation didn't update the DNS service as IPs were handed out to DHCP clients. Because of this, it wasn't possible to access hosts by their hostname, since getting a DHCP-assigned dynamic IP at boot-up didn't do anything to automagically register the hostname-to-IP mapping in DNS. Manually registering the hostname in DNS was pointless, becuase over time the client IP address can and did change. I could create static IP assignments based on the MAC address, but doing that for all of the devices on my home network sort of defeated the purpose of using dynamic IPs.
The only solution I eventually found was to go out and get an open source DHCP server, compile it for my Mac, install it, and configure it. After doing this, everything worked great; every time a new host or other device was booted it got a dynamic IP through DHCP, and then the DHCP server automatically updated Apple's DNS serive with the hostname and assigned IP. I could immediately access every device on my network by hostname. As IP addresses changed over time, the hostname-to-IP mapping in DNS was automatically updated.
Except, Apple's point upgrades kept breaking my non-Apple DHCP install. Every time I applied software updates to my server I had to go back and re-finagle DHCP to get it to automatically start and run. By the time Lion Server came out, I drank the Kool-Aid and went back to Apple's DHCP implementation. I was disappointed that it still didn't seem able to update DNS with hostnames as it assigned IPs, but I was so tired of mucking about at the command prompt to fix DHCP every time Software Updates broke it, I just lived with the inconvenience of not being able to access devices on my network by hostname.
I'm sorry to say this, but Windows Server has had this capability since at least server 2003. In fact, until I dumped my Windows Server and switched to Snow Leopard Server, I was running Microsoft's DNS and DHCP services on Server 2003 and they did exactly what I'm describing brilliantly.
Can anyone offer any advice here? Does Mountain Lion's implementation of DHCP allow for DDNS updates to the DNS service? If not, how are other people handling this? Should I go back to running Windows Server for my DNS and DHCP services? My Netgear WNDR3700 router appears to have the standard, substandard DHCP server in firmware as most home routers, and no facility for DNS at all--much less the ability to update an on-site DNS sever with IP addresess it hands out. In fact, the only appliance I know of that does this is the InfoBlox my employer uses, but that's too expensive for a home solution.
As a Post Script, I'll add that I've been VERY unhappy that I lost the ability to bind Windows clients to Open Directory under Lion Server. Since I'm starting to see articles that say this capability hasn't been added back to Mountain Lion Server, I'm seriously considering implementing a Windows Server AD master and establishing a "magic triangle" or "golden triangle". If I end up having to do that, I wonder if I might as well just go back to using Microsoft's DNS and DHCP services.

    Hi,
Whether to move your DHCP to another server depends on the workload of your server. If there are too many clients on the network, you should move your DHCP to another server.
Did the record which owned by the machine generate before you configure the DnsUpdateProxy group? You can try to regenerate the record and check the result.

Hi thanks for the reply, i've fixed fot the half of the groups' errors, for the others it gives me that the group X doesn't exist. This the output:
    # groupmod --gid 102 polkitd
groupmod: group 'polkitd' does not exist
    # groupmod --gid 84 avahi
groupmod: group 'avahi' does not exist

    # groupmod --gid 133 rtkit
groupmod: group 'rtkit' does not exist
I had tried to re-install yesterday for example git and sddm packages but it didn't fix the issue.

  • What is the difference between SmartNet and SMBS service level

    Good Afternoon
I would like to ask if what is the difference between Cisco's SmartNet and Cisco's SMBS service level?
    Thank you

    Hi Rey,
SMARtnet covers traditional Cisco products (enterprise products ie. ISR routers), Small Business Support Center covers the small business line.
In the UC group of products, for some reason, Cisco considers the UC520, AP521, and WLC526 which are branded small business to be traditional Cisco products and are covered under SMARTnet. But, the UC540 and UC560 are covered by SBSC. One major difference in the UC arena is the support for CLI vs CCA config.
However, I noticed your post was in the Small Business - switches category. If you have a small business switch  those are covered by SBSC not TAC. SBSC will support the CLI and web gui config of the small business switches, where CLI is applicable to the model.
SBSC contracts tend to be for 3 year periods and can be significantly less expensive than SMARTnet agreements.
    Hope that helps.
    Best,
    David

  • Solaris 10 x86 u5 dhcp and jumpstart install fail

I can use jumpstart install with dhcp and get a static ip address (assigned by dhcp server) before solaris 10 u3.

I think that you should modify the script discovery-install, so you'll be able to create the sysidcfg file dynamically. I had the same problem as you and there is a possibility to add some arguments to the boot command that you execute at the ok prompt. These arguments can be defined in the discovery-install script. It's quite easy.

  • Cannot log into CMS and all services fail to load on installation.

A trial version of Crystal Server XI r2 was installed due to problems with the license key for our purchased version of XI.  The r2 has since expired and I have uninstalled it.  I have now tried to install XI several times, but I am having a problem with the installation where it is Starting Services.  I get errors for each server Error 1920 Service Destination and server failed to start.  Please can you advise why this is occurring and what I can do to fix it?
I keep getting the log in for the CMS, but no matter what I enter it fails.  Possibly I have selected something wrong in the installation.  I do not believe we had to log into the CMS previously.
    It comes up with
System: CrystalReports (no other options) User Name: Administrator
    Password:
Authentication:  Enterprise (other options LDAP, Windows NT, Windows AD - all these come up with error that there is no plug-in).  I have entered the server password which failed, tried it blank which failed.  I do not know what is required here.
I have tried all our passwords, but no users or passwords work.  I have tried selecting different options, but have mostly tried New with the Create new or use existing, java and iis both selected as default, SQL Server and entered sa + password,
I think probably an old version of the CMS exists from the original installation, but I have tried complete uninstall.

  • The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization.

We have two DHCP servers hosted on Hyper-V.
But after shutdown activity at our DC, the servers gave an usual issue.
"The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization."
We have rebooted number of time before getting this server into production but it never gave such kind of error.
Also this time the local DC was shutdown.
Please suggest the necessary steps to be taken.

    Hi,
The authorized DHCP server contacts a domain controller every 60 min to detect/redetect his status. Maybe your DHCP has tried to reach the DC which was offline thus throwing that error. Are you still having issues with DHCP server servicing clients?
Once the server talks to a DC and checks that his authorized the service will start leasing IPs to clients.

  • The DHCP Service failed to see a directory server for authorization error

    Hi Experts,
"The DHCP Service failed to see a directory server for authorization error"
I have DHCP Server installed on the same server where Active directory is installed its a domain controller, when I see the event logs I saw the above error.
This alert comes a number of times, just after the error
"The DHCP/BINL service on the local machine, belonging to the Windows Administrative domain eg.com.pk, has determined that it is authorized to start. It is servicing clients now."
Please somebody suggest some solution for this.
    TechSpec90

    Two questios:
Is the server a domain controller?
And, according to this, "The DHCP/BINL service on the local machine, belonging to the Windows Administrative domain eg.com.pk, has determined that it is authorized to start. It is servicing clients now", the service eventually do start, yes?

I just noticed the exact same thing. It turns out that the httpd-ssl.conf file on my system is still the old v2.2 syntax, which means that the SSLMutex directive is still in there. This is an invalid directive after 2.2.
This is where things get interesting. At first, I simply thought I had forgotten to merge httpd-ssl.conf.pacnew after apache had been upgraded to 2.4. However, when I check my pacman.log, it appears that httpd-ssl.conf was never upgraded when apache went to 2.4 - (2.2.26-1 -> 2.4.7-1). There was never a pacnew file generated to be merged.
I took a look at the apache package via the abs and the "proper" httpd-ssl.conf is certainly in there, so why pacman never created a pacnew file is a mystery.
Anyway, to fix this: pull the httpd-ssl.conf from the apache package, either from your cache, using the abs and building it, or (I think) pacman may re-install it if you move the file to a backup location (not sure about this). Then merge your original httpd-ssl-conf with the new one.

  • W7: User Profile Service service failed at log on: Apparently W7 is no longer creating any user profile data other than username and picture.

First time poster, but I think I've done my homework on this issue.
This issue has similar symptoms to a problem with vista: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/130095-user-profile-service-failed-logon-user-profile-cannot-loaded.html
However, it is definitely not the same issue (see further).
    Current Config:
    HP dv7-1450.
    W7 RC 7100 x64
Last update (up to date as of 8/31/09) installed succesfully 8/26/09 and should be unrelated to this issue (not verified yet by a pre-update restore).
Running with Admin account while diagnosing/troubleshooting.
Currently have two working accounts, one standard, one admin.
    Symptom:
New user accounts cannot be logged into.  On an attempted login to the new account, the following information is displayed on the login screen:  "The User Profile Service service failed the logon.  User profile cannot be loaded."  Windows then logs off the operator and returns to the initial user selection screen.  All other aspects of use are normal.
    Current Diagnostics:
First attempts to resolve this problem were to recreate the new account.  This was attempted when logged in as both Standard and Admin.  This was also attempted under safe mode.  This has been attempted with virus protection disabled.  All to no difference in the symptom.
The similarity to the Vista issue (linked above) caused me to check the registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ for the new profile (as suggested by that link).  Unlike that issue, there simply is no entry for the new user.  Examination of the new log entries from creation of account to attempted log in provides the following entries:
Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task Category

Error 8/31/2009 12:34:09 PM Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service 1511 None Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.
Warning 8/31/2009 12:34:09 PM Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles General 1509 None "Windows cannot copy file C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\SqmApi\SqmData720896_00.sqm to location C:\Users\{New Username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\SqmApi\SqmData720896_00.sqm. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.
    DETAIL - Access is denied.
Naturally I started with the earliest error first, and decided to look to see what is going on.  The file that is trying to be copied is there, but the destination folder does not exist.  As near as I can tell, whatever process (the User Profiles General Service?) is trying to perform the copy does not have sufficient access to perform the operation.  Specifically I suspect it may not be able to create the appropriate folders before performing the copy.  Interestingly, it appears that when windows attempts to open/create a temporary account profile, the same issue occurs.  Since there is no registry entry either, I suspect that the issue also extends to the creation of registry keys, but I am not familiar enough with the sequence of events in the creation of a user profile to determine if this would come before or after a user profile's first login.
I attempted to find more information, and was able to investigate the UPS diagnostic event log (for a different, but identical attempt at creating and using the new profile).  The following two (unhelpful to me) log entries were generated.
Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task Category
Information 8/31/2009 12:34:10 PM Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service 1002 (1001) "The description for Event ID 1002 from source Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
The message id for the desired message could not be found
Information 8/31/2009 12:34:09 PM Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service 1001 (1001) "The description for Event ID 1001 from source Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
It seems to imply that the User Profiles Service may be corrupted, but this may also be unrelated.  I do not know how to specifically repair this service anyway (but am open to try it if someone can walk me through it a bit).
There's the info.  I'd like to figure out how to watch the account creation process in more detail to see if I gleen more, but I don't have the experience to know what to do to enable such a log.  I will not perform a reinstall and am loath to do a restore, instead looking more for a cause and effect repair: something that would actually help MS fix the problem rather than have the customer fix the symptom.
    Thanks in advance to responders!

To resolve this issue, I suggst you delete the file C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\SqmApi\SqmData720896_00.sqm.Arthur Xie - MSFT

  • Apple Mobile Device Service failed to start which eventually leads to windows error 193 which never goes away no matter what I do  and the dreaded

Mid way through download of I-Tunes after clearing every Apple program from my computer I get "Apple Mobile Device Service" failed to start message.  Eventually leading to Windows error 193 (error 7).  How do I get Apple Mobile Device Service to start so I do not get error messages and failure of I-Tunes to install?

If you have a 64-bit machine, then try the "for older video cards" version...
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • How to set up DHCP and NAT for QNAP NAS MyCloud service?

I have an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) attached to my DSL model (no router in the modem).  My QNAP NAS is attached via ethernet to the QNAP NAS.  My iMac (running AirPort Utility 6.x) is connected to the AEBS via wifi.
I've found several folks who've tried this (and apparently succeeded) but I'm a networking novice and am having trouble making this work.  What I did was to go into the AirPort utility and in the networking section configure "DHCP and NAT" and then called out the static IP and MAC address of the QNAP NAS (as well as the ports I'd like to remain open).  However, when I did this and applied the changes, my iMac (connected to the AEBS via wifi) could no longer see the AEBS, which then required me to reset the AEBS, re-configure it back to the previous known good conifiguration and start over.  After about 5 cycles of this I gave up.
So, what am I doing wrong here?  Do I need to go in and configure every device that is going to access the AEBS as static and call out each device's IP and MAC address? (hopefully not, that'd be a major PITA).
    Help.  Anyone?

  • I'm installing the newest itunes 64 bit on my win 7 64 bit professional os. using the itunes installer it loads itunes part way and then i get an error message saying that bonjour service failed to start. i cant get itunes any further. i have to back out

I'm installing the newest version of Itunes over the last version on my laptop. win 7 pro os. it starts the install then a error msg comes up stating that Bonjour service failed to start. verify that i have sufficient priveleges to start system services. I can't retry, ignore only cancel which un-installs all that it has installed and reverts me to the last version which i had. any idea?

it starts the install then a error msg comes up stating that Bonjour service failed to start. verify that i have sufficient priveleges to start system services.
Sometimes we can get past that one by disabling the Bonjour Service prior to the install.
In your Start menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
    ... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
