DHCP client not working

Ok here is the scenario:
I have a laptop with an up to date Arch installation, at home I use a static ip with my router which still has dhcp enabled for some other desktops.
Now at work I needed to use DHCP, so i reconfigured rc.conf to say eth0="dhcp". But it never got an ip address, it always fails. When I checked with ethereali could see the outgoing dhcp packet but no response from the server, the cable and server were clean because all was well under Windows. I tried both dhcpcd and dhclient but no luck with either.
I then compared the packets under windows and arch and came to the conclusion that the only noticeable difference is that the DHCP message type is "DHCP Request" under Windows and for some reason is "DHCP Discover" under arch (there's a binary difference in the packet and thats the way ethereal names the types). Now i'm wondering why the hell does it do that? Why can't dhcpcd and dhclient send a normal dhcp request? Am I missing something really obvious here? Because Dhcp is making me look like an idiot :S And I really need to get online under Linux for work.
Any help is appreciated. Thx.
EDIT: I also have Arch on my desktop, and just tried it using dhcp there, and it works fine. It might be worth mentioning that my desktop is rather out-of-date when it comes to packages while my laptop is prettymuch up-to-date. And yup the packet type is also "Dhcp Request" when i try it on my desktop instead of "Dhcp Discover".. weird.

Solved: Was a driver problem, if you have a broadcom wired ethernet chipset, you need the driver from broadcom because the kernel has some kind of reversed driver built in and it doesn't work properly.

  • DHCP client not working on WLAN after boot [Win XP]

    Hi.
    I've got a problem with a Lenovo T61 with Windows XP SP2.
I've browsed the forums, and I haven't seen anyone else with a similar problem.
The WLAN works on this computer, but I have to turn it off and on before it works.
If I boot the computer with no ethernet cable connected, log in and wait for Windows to connect to a WLAN, I get limited or no connectivity.
The computer is able to connect to the WLAN I have chosen, but when it is supposed to recieve an IP adress from the DHCP Server it doesn't.
I either have to right click the wireless icon at the lower right of the screen and press repair, or I have to turn off and on the wireless radio with the switch on the laptop.
When I do this it works as normal.
If I use Access connections to set up a wireless connection, specify an SSID, encryption and choose to get IP from DHCP it works. I recieve an IP adress without turning the WLAN radio off and on.
The person using this computer is travelling a lot, and he is not very good with computers, so he doesn't want to use Access Connections to manually make a profile for each WLAN he uses.
How can I fix this and use windows to mange WLAN connections without having to using "repair" or turning the WLAN radio off and on?
    Thanks in advance.

There is another thread on this problem about not recovering TCPIP addresses on this forum. the thread recommends installing an update.  http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=1620
Does the laptop have SP3 installed. I found this to be very helpful on my T23.

  • WRE54G - DHCP Soundbridge not working

I am sure everyone has has had issues getting a WRE54G up and runing at home - not the easiest of products (when using the encryption option).
I have an Organce LiveBox ADSL/Wireless router (Sagem badged Orange) and needed the range extended to get my Soundbridge (Pinnacle badged Roku) working elsewhere in the house.
    A couple of problems:
    - DHCP does not work via the WRE54G.  Solved this by setting a static IP address on the Soundbridge (you telnet to it on port 4444 and use the ipset command line utility)
    - The Soundbridge can access Internet radio stations fine, but if connected via the WRE54G then it loses contact with the Firefly media server
    - WindowsXP PnP "sees" the Soundbridge the "other side" of the the WRE54G but cannot access it when you double click on the icon.  Not an issue as just using the static IP address in the browser gets the configuration screen
I guess that I had expected the WRE53G to act more like a repeater, but is appears to be working as a bridge and the bridging function is somewhat broken.
Anyone have any ideas / fixes for the product?  This is highly infuriating.

Try a different wall plug and see if that makes any difference, try a different power cable of the same power specification or a universal power adapter(if possible)...Maybe the Power Adapter is faulty and the unit is still functional...

  • WAP321 - DHCP for wifi clients not working

My WAP321 connected to a office switch A.
WAP321 wifi clients unable to get DHCP
Clients wired to switch A can recieve DHCP.
    Using firmware vesion 1.0.2.3
    I'm perplexed still.

Due to a earlier print issue I've reset the WAP321 and uploaded the latest firmware. Which seems to have fix the printer issues but not fix my DHCP request issue.
Been doing some more digging and drilled it down a little further.
What I have is unmanage switch(no vlan) which is connected to WAP321(with static IP).
I'm able to wifi SSID connect ok with the OSX laptop i.e. request DHCP work.
Now i'm running a VM on this laptop ( Virtual Box running FreeBSD )
VM/FreeBSD boots but is unable to get DHCP requests.
If i connect the laptop to another wifi AP point the same virtual box VM/FreeBSD - i'm able to get DHCP requests
(note: AP different make & connected to same unmanage switch)
Seems to surgest WAP321 could still be the issue.
Although (Virtual Box + FreeBSD VM) could also be an issue - which is beyond this forum.

Any ideas would be a great help . . .thx

  • Some dhcp clients not reaching internet

This afternoon, I noticed that my iPhone was no longer reaching the internet. Later, we noticed my husband's (new!) iPad and my son's MacBook were not reaching the internet either. At least my MacBook was still reaching the internet. In all cases, the connectivity with the airport was fine; 4-5 bars, most of the time. All were connected yesterday, I believe. We made no real changes. I had my iPhone right next to my MacBook and both had good connections to the wifi, but only the MacBook was reaching the Internet.
I went into Airport Utility and looked at the Time Capsule and found a long list under DHCP clients (maybe 9), but only 4 on the wireless clients list. I researched the issue, finding very little except generic suggestions (update software and reset the Time Capsule). The software was up to date; resetting it did fix the problem, at least for now. I am concerned it will happen again.
    Our airport devices:
    - Time Capsule running 7.5.2
    - 2 Airport Expresses, also running 7.5.2.
Most, if not all, our wifi devices are up to date, including my MacBook running 10.6.5 and my iPhone running 4.2.1.

I'm not sure this is quite the same since simply restarting our Time Capsule fixed things for us. It is annoying since I don't want to have to restart the Time Capsule every week or so when it fails this way, but restarted did fix this, at least temporarily.
Another possibility I came across is that an ISP might limit the number of devices you can connect to the Time Capsule, but that wasn't the case for us. I'm thinking the Apple person you talked to probably checked on this, though.
Hope you can figure it out!

  • [T400] Cisco VPN client not working over wireless adapter (but works on cabled connection)

I have a very strange problem.
I need to connect to my work via the cisco vpn client (version 5.0.00.0340).
My previous laptop (T43 , windows XP) worked well through both wired / wireless connections.  My desktop machine (vista) works via wired connection (it has no wireless connection).
On my new T400, the VPN client works via a wired connection but not via the wireless adapter.
On the wireless apapter, the vpn seems to connect OK, but when I try to access resources via the VPN there is little response.
I get this in the vpn log...
    405   08:56:57.073  04/16/09  Sev=Warning/2 IPSEC/0xE3700003
Function CniInjectSend() failed with an error code of 0xa4510009 (IPSecDrvCB:846)
I've tried disabling the firewall (in both the T400 and the router), removed access connections, and disabling tcp v6. I've rebooted everything too.
But, nothing seems to work.   I suspect the problem is on the t400 somewhere, because the old laptop used to work OK via wireless.
I've seen some google links on cisco vpn not working via  wireless but nothing seems to apply to my exact situation yet.
Anyone else had this problem or know of a fix? Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

all good now, got it working.
The Deterministic network thing was not installed on the wireless adapter for some reason.
So, I installed the latest wireless driver, reinstalled the vpn and all is good now.

  • DHCP *still* not working.

i posted some of the problems i was having in this post here :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5706025
after reinstalling 10.5 Server about half a dozen times... DHCP randomly started working just fine and has been working pretty well in the past month or so.
then i got some new computers recently.
none of them get a DHCP address. not a single one. they all get self-assigned numbers.
and the log is once again filled with the familiar :
    Feb 11 12:52:33 dropbox bootpd[312]: DHCP DISCOVER [en0]: 1,0:1e:c2:b7:d9:e3 <Air23>
    Feb 11 12:52:33 dropbox bootpd[312]: service time 0.000963 seconds

    Feb 11 12:52:35 dropbox bootpd[312]: service time 0.001488 seconds
repeat non-stop and for every single new machine i got.
    anyone have any ideas?
i tried recreating the subnet from scratch again... no change.
i tried adding the <replythresholdseconds> to 0 again... no change.
where or how is the server keeping track of the "old" machines being viable and able to get an IP vs. the "new" machines which refuse to work at all? there has to be something somewhere where it is keeping track of this.
i also tried converting an old machine that never was on DHCP to DHCP ... it also was unable to get an address.
manually-assigned out-of-range DHCP addresses seem to work fine on the new machines however. my DHCP goes from 192.168.3.2 -.127 ... and addresses manually entered at .200+ all give the machines a network connection. this is a temporary solution however.
    any ideas?
    thanks.
    zeb.

at this point in time... yes. hundreds of times. just near the bottom of the .plist.
tried it in the upper section where the subnet info is as well... made no difference.

  • Driver to email client not working

For my class we are attempting to write our own email client. Our professor gave us the following driver. However when I attempt to compile the driver I get these errors:
    MailClient.java:125: cannot find symbol
    symbol  : variable envelope
    location: class MailClient.SendListener
                   SMTPConnection connection = new SMTPConnection(envelope);

    MailClient.java:126: cannot find symbol
    symbol  : variable envelope
    location: class MailClient.SendListener
connection.send(envelope);Admittedly it could be something with the SMPTConnection code, as that is what we had to write. However I would have expected it to throw some sort of exception in there and it does not. Any help to figure out why the driver is not working would be appreciatted.

  • IP invalid - DHCP option not working - Moden Motorola SB5120

    Hi Apple friends,
My Airport is not being able to get the ip number from my Motorola modem SB5120, I know that the ip should be provided by my modem (DHCP server), but for any reason it is not working. The airport works without any problem if I connect it to my I-LINK router. Does anyone could help me with some information that could help me to solve this issue?

    Williamfs wrote:
I turned the modem off for over than 6 hours and then tried to connect again, but the airport is still not being able to get an ip from the modem, should I call the ISP? Would you have any other information that could help me?
I'd verify that your AirPort unit is configured correctly. Launch AirPort Utility, double-click on the icon of your unit on the left to enter "Manual Configuration" mode, the select the "Internet" panel and the "Internet Connection" tab. You should see settings for "Connect Using" of "Ethernet" and for "Configure IPv4" of "Using "DHCP".
If that's all set correctly, then the next step should be to call your ISP. The question you need to ask them is whether they record the "MAC address" of your equipment and whether they need to change their settings if you replace the equipment directly connected to your modem. If so, the value they will need from you will be labeled "Ethernet ID" and will be on the outside (perhaps on the bottom) of your AirPort unit.

  • Verizon email; Thunderbird client; Not working since 3/25/2013;server name change

Yesterday, 3/25/2013, I noticed that email wasn't working from my thunderbird client. After a day of assuming that the problem existed elsewhere, I found on this site where it says to use POP.VERIZON.NET, port 995, and SMTP.VERIZON.NET, port 465.  After grumbling why didn't I hear about this name change?, I changed them. At that time I noticed that the PORTS were wrong, too.  They'd been right, and now, not.  Most confusing.  I changed them.  Each account has CONNECTION SECURITY SSL/TLS and NORMAL PASSWORD.
But: when I try to connect, I get:  An error occurred during a connection to pop.verizon.net:995.  You have received an invalid certificate.....Your certificate contains the same serial number as another certificate issued by the certificate authority.  Please get a new certificate...."
I am at a loss.  What's wrong, other than that email seems to be choking on security?
    Solved!

Found in another post where a person said the INCOMING.VERIZON.NET and OUTGOING.VERIZON.NET did still work, so I tried it, but still got that Certificate error.  Found someone else who said they had to say 'no connection security' before it would work, and so I tried that -- and it did.
Not thrilled about this, but the client is working again.

  • ArenaNets GW2 Mac Client Not Working

I have installed the new ArenaNet Guild Wars 2 client.
Game all downloaded and installed but it does not work.
I click login - all good.
I click Play - black screen with hand pointer
It then drops back to desktop
It did run once last night and thats it, before that once nothing, after that once nothing.
It runs on this spec Mac people are saying - ATI Radeon HD4870 512 MB 2008 MacPro 6GB Mem
It will not run on my machine.
    MacPro 2009 ATI Radeon HD4870 6GB 10.6.8 2.66 GHz Quad Core-Intel
People are reporting that it will and does work on my above spec machine.
The specs that ArenaNet give are just what they want to support not what it will actually work on.
I know the games good on my machine as it runs under WIneskin but not as good the new Mac client.
    Any help/ideas would be good.

You're right ntotheappledotcom! I upgraded to Lion and characters like '-', '*', '!', '.' are working now, however, '/' and '@' still don't work. Less to worry about
Next feature should be writable ftp mountpoints in Finder... Please!

  • Lion as Kerberized NFS4 client not working

    Greetings,
I have Lion 10.7.3 as a new install, trying to get kerberized NFS4 working. "kinit someuser" works and I get a valid ticket, so communicating with the KDC ok. Note kerberized NFS4 is working well on a bunch of linux clients, I do have the "insecure" option set on the NFS server. Firewalls all off for testing. Keytab containing host and nfs successfully transfered to the mac with correct kvno.
    sudo mount -v -t nfs -o sec=krb5,vers=4 NFS_Server_Ip:/Dir_to_be_exported /Users/some_user/mountpoint
    results in:
    "mount_nfs: can't mount /Dir_to_be_exported onto /Users/some_user/mountpoint: Permission denied
    and in /var/log/kernel.log
    "nfs_gss_clnt_gssd_upcall: gssd port not valid
    nfs4_setclientid failed, 13"
Permisions all ok as far as I can see and as I said, this is working fine on several Linux clients. The KDC is Linux MIT.
I've been doing some research and these kernel log messages were questioned in quite a few 2008 threads, with no apparent successful resolution - I hope it's not the same bug!
    All suggestions gratefully accepted,
    BRgds/Alan

    For the benefit of others:
Apple Support have confirmed that Kerberized NFS4 does not work under Mac OSX. (and I suspect it never has). I'll restrain myself from further comment ...
