Dial-up disconnections

This is a frustrating dial-up connection bug that I have not been able to solve for a long time. When I start up my iMac G5 with 10.4.3 and want to get online, I wait until the starting up processes have finished. A few seconds after my desktop and GUI shows up, I go to connect to the internet (there is no cable/DSL/BPL available here). For the first 30 seconds of the connection, I can browse fine, but then my connection stalls for 60 seconds so that I have zero transfer speed, and then at the 90th second or so, I am either disconnected, or my connection resumes back to regular speed interrupted from there on. If I get disconnected, then once I connect again, I stay connected. (For shortcut purposes, I'm going to call this unusual stalling and potential disconnection sequence "The Problem.") If I try to connect anywhere between 5 and 300 seconds after the desktop and GUI are displayed, then The Problem exists, whereas if I wait at least 5 minutes, The Problem does not occur. The Problem occurs, also, if I try to get on the internet (I think) 5 to 300 seconds after I wake my computer up from sleep.
Background information:
[1] The Problem did not exist in Jaguar 10.2.x.
[2] The Problem first appeared in Panther 10.3.x seemingly out of the box, because even with a fresh erase and install, it existed. It has continued through Tiger.
[3] The Problem exists on nearly all computers that can run Tiger, since even my PowerMac G4 Cube experienced it with Panther.
[4] The Problem is not corrected on Panther or Tiger by varying the PPP or Network settings to as many combinations as I can think of.
Reason for posting:
The Problem is both difficult to circumvent, tough to identify the cause, and frustrating to work with. I want it resolved.
(By the way, I posted a thread about The Problem back in July of 2005, and it received about 20 responses, some from myself, many from others who mentioned what they tried with Apple over the phone and how it worked out. Yet the thread has been deleted, since I can't find it anywhere. Who deleted it, and why?)

That is a very strange problem; in all my use of dialup I have not seen something like that, but I can imagine it happening if there would be, for example, a problem with either peer's negotiation resulting in rejected protocols or a problem with the data passed up from the modem driver. Or something else. Without seeing pppd debug logs*, kernel ppp debug logs** or a packet trace* it's hard to say.
I would sign up for a free online ADC account and file a bug report that includes lots of details about what you see, any error messages, system and connection logs (be sure to use verbose logging), your machine(s) configuration(s), and any other information you suspect may be relevant. It's likely it hasn't been fixed because it's never been reported to Apple in a form that can be reproduced. You might want to look at this for helpful tips on how to file effective bug reports.
As noted in the help documentation for these discussions, posts are removed after a certain amount of time.
* - Enable verbose logging. Editing /etc/ppp/options as root and adding additional debug (e.g. debug debug) often gives more info.
** - Editing /etc/ppp/options as root and adding kdebug 7 shows kernel level PPP debug in system.log. Makes syslog very big! See pppd man page for details.
* - Running tcpdump on the ppp link to see the traffic between your machine and the peer can sometimes shed light on these issues.

My dial-up connection keeps diconnecting after an hour. Actually I get a dialog box asking me if I want to stay connected (every hour) if I don't respond I get disconnected. My question is; is there a setting somewhere that I can use to keep myself connected so that I can download my updates?
I live in an area where dial-up is my only option.

  • Dial-up disconnect

    I have two configurations:
    1 - AS5400 receiving dial-up calls (ISDN PRI), building L2TP tunnel to 2800 or 7200 router;
    2 - AS5400 also receiving dial-up calls but without L2TP tunnel
Based on username some connections need to be disconnected after some time (configured using Session-Timeout Radius parameter). The second option disconnects clearly, but the first one leaves physical line up on the user side, although access server reports line is down. Is this a known bug? Is there some workaround?
    K.P.

Since the access server shows that the port is down, there is no call that is active. What is the version of IOS runnning on the remote end routers that are making the call to the access server. You can try doing an upgrade to the latest version and check the status of the physical line when the call is disconnected.

  • Headset disconnects when dialing

    Greetings,
I have a BB Curve 8900 and for the last few months my headset/earbud connects when I turn it on, but when speed-dialing it disconnects. I have to turn the headset on then off to get it to work, while the call is dailing. I've tried this with two headsets, my old one and a new one. Same thing seems to happen. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • PLEASE READ THIS &HELP!!! I DONT UNDERSTAND..

When I call my boyfriends phone, which was previously his mothers number, but he took over her account, because she changed carriers, i get a message that says, the number you have dialed is disconnected, the number has been changed or is no longer in service.
I am thinking that he didnt pay the bill. (he has had this number now for about 2 months)
I called verizon and I was thinking about paying the bill myself, so I asked how much it was and it was a total of $451 or $250. I guess the $250 is the amount that was not paid last month, and the rest is for this month. I am not sure about the way it works. Can you guys please clarify???I am not sure why it is so much, because the phone he is using is just a basic flip phone, not a smart phone and has no texting.
His mother, on the other hand, did have a blackberry when she had the account, and I am guessing she had other phones on the account since it is $250.
The lady at verizon told me that I didnt have to pay the whole amount, I could just pay some of it.
If I do this will the phone be turned back on, or do I have to pay the whole amound for it to come back on?
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I will be happy to advise in order to have services turned back on will need to pay at least past due amount so account is current and can also set up future payment arrangements. Hope information helps.

  • Samsung Galaxy S3 No Sim error

Hi currently own a Samsung Galaxy S3 for the past 2 days, and it works great in 4G areas and other 3G areas, however, the 3G area where I live will pop up with a No Sim error when originating a call or text from my phone. When a call is made it tries to dial then disconnects saying out of service and the 3G symbol are gone, 10-15 secs later they come back up. Texts try to send then fail same issue as before appears and the No Sim error pops up in the notification panel and 10-15 secs later the 3G and reception is back up. I normally have anywhere to 3-4 bars in my home location. This seems to only happen in my home location. I've owned 4 different 4G devices in the same locations and never had this issue till now. It is looking like a firmware issue with Samsung or tower not really sure. Have put the phone in safe mode, turned off LTE, turned off WIFI power saving, nothing works. Hope this issue is resolved soon. Tried 2 different phones and 3 different SIM cards. Not sure what the issue is.

I truly doubt it is a real SIM card issue. It seems to occur with cell towers that have a heavy volume. I was able to dial out early in the day before most people were at work and then at noon all attempts failed. I tried again after 6pm when most have returned home and again it worked fine. I never removed the battery or SIM card. After I saw it was working I went back to the few failed text messages and sent them again - just fine. I suspect some of those who reported the problem being resolved with a new SIM card may either have actually had a bad SIM card or they hit a slow traffic time and it will fail again under the right circumstances.

  • Repetitious-disconnections-from-MMO (part 2)

    Original thread:  http://forums.verizon.com/t5/High-Speed-Internet-DSL-and-Dial/Repetitious-disconnections-from-MMO/td...
It has been about three weeks since this problem began, listed in the above post (all statistics in the router are still the same).  I originally trumped it up to traffic shaping on Verizon's end, but everyone knows what happens when you make assumptions.  Regardless, I refused to simply give up a game that I've been playing for five years.  So after some ping tracking using two different programs I have witnessed up to 100% packet loss from my Westell 7500 (modem/router combo) to my ISP server located in NW, PA.  This packet loss only lasts about 10 seconds; it creeps up from 20% to 100%, hangs there, and then drops back down.
Before I have a tech come check out the lines, I would like to know if there is a way to turn the Westell 7500 into a modem disabling the routing capabilities.  I have an old Linksys 54G that has been very reliable throughout the years that I would like to try out, to rule out the router included in the combo.  I have done some research on these forums, and both of my attempts to do this have ended with having to do a factory reset on the Westell 7500.  On my last attempt, I got the Linksys to automatically pull DNS IP's from the modem... but had no internet connection.  Then after doing a factory reset, it takes the Westell 7500 about 30-40 minutes to pull an actual internet connection, but the DSL has no trouble connecting.
The connection to the house is a "routed bridge," so is this even possible?
Would it help to list how I attempted to set this up?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I made an account on http://www.dslreports.com/ and used the Verizon Direct section of their forums to solve my issue.  If you're getting tired of speaking to an outsourced tech support guy, whose third language is English then I suggest posting there to get your issue resolved.
It took a day for them to collect my info and submit a ticket; the next day they assigned me a new IP Gateway and all is resolved.

  • Analog Emergency Phone Voltage Problem

We have a customer who has some emergency phones around their campus. These are made by Ramtel, and are simple devices on a pedestal, w/ two buttons, black and red. Typically, one dials security and the other dials 911, though we currently have both programmed to dial 911. You program the device by dialing into it. The device is programmed properly.
When hitting the black button, and plugged into the VG248, it dials out properly. When hitting the red button, plugged into the vg 248, we hear dialing then disconnect. (Note: this is not a PLAR device, it must dial the digits.) Ramtel suggested that we test the voltage. The VG248 provided 35 volts on-hook. We found we were getting only 8.8 volts off-hook. Ramtel advised that the device must have 10 volts off-hook to work properly. We decided to switch to an FXS card on a 2811 to see if it would push more voltage. The on hook voltage was then 48 volts and the off-hook voltage was approximately the same 8.8 volts; however, now we get both buttons to dial and then disconnect about a second later. We've tested the lines and they are clean.
When we plug the device directly into a POTS line, it works as expected, so it looks like the voltage is definitely an issue. It appears that these devices have a very low tolerance for variance in expected voltage.
What is more troubling is that these devices were plugged into a CM 4.x system on the same VG248 and reportedly worked previously. Unfortunately, I was not able to verify that, but that is the story I have heard.
Has anybody fought these before? Is there anything I can do to increase the voltage? Is there any device that would increase the voltage pushed out?

I'm having an almost identical problem. These boxes were working fine (on vg224) and then one day they all decided, nope. We've discovered a lot of things.
#1 The version of code we were running was only putting out 22 volts max
#2 There is an undocumented command "alt-battery-feed feed2" applied to the port gives another 7-8 On hook Volts on the line
#3 Even ATT's line does not meet ramtel's spec
Ramtel's spec says on hook voltage has to be between 40 and 50V and off hook voltage has to be 10V with a minimum of 30ma current, max 55ma
I've tested the VG's with and without the alt-battery command and an ATT line and the only difference is ATT is putting out 46V and the VG maxes at 43-44. Everything else is identical (26ma on hook, 6V 12ma off hook). I'm going to call ramtel and see what they believe is going on since the voltage is in spec and the current is the same as what ATT is providing.

  • Dial-up connection disconnects when importing CDs into iTunes

When importing a CD, my dial-up Internet connection disconnects after each song has finished importing. The importing doesn't seem to be affected, but I keep having to reconnect. This is very annoying!
Has anyone else had this problem, and how can I fix it?

This is also a known phenomenon on Macs with a dial-up connection.
For Macs there is a workaround, but no solution yet.
By using an Applescript, the firewall settings will be toggled on CD insert, preventing iTunes to contact Gracenote (to get track information).
I don't know something similar for Windows.
Maybe you can write some code yourself.
The URL to block (temporary) is "http://service.gracenote.com"
You can always get the track information later by selecting all tracks of an imported CD and choosing 'Get CD Track Names' from the Advanced menu in iTunes.

    hi Michelle!
where do I begin trying to find the culprit?
actually, i just remembered seeing somewhere (i've lost the thread, though) someone reporting a problem with their internet connection that went away after they updated their
    b sound card drivers
    (of all things).
so let's try working through this document on sound problems in itunes. let's try/check-on
    b everything
there, and see if a sort of "audio spring clean" fixes both problems for you.
(thinking here that since neither of us know
    b precisely
what's going on, this can at least provide us with a structured place to start our investigations.)

  • My dial up connection keeps disconnecting!!!

hi... my dial up spends a while to even connect!!! most of the time it will just say that it does not detect a dial tone... but ive checked with other computers on the same line and its no problem... i even checked with the internet provider... please help!!!

    Hi,
This may require a bit of hunting on your part, as you are on OS 10.2 and I am on 10.4. What you want to do is find the System Preference Pane that has the Modem info. On mine, it is: Network > Internal Modem > PPP > PPP Options. Here I find 'Session Options'with a check box to "Disconnect if idle for XX minutes". Un-check it. If you can find a setting like this, this may be your answer. I know it caught me in the first day or so. Failing that, SCOUR this Discussion Board, as I know I have seen other solutions -- it's just I can't remember where. Good luck.

    dial-up connection disconnects after awhile

    Nick,
    check the following:
    system preferences / network
    show: internal modem
    tab PPP
    press button PPP options
disconnect when user logs out must be OFF
I think this will solve your problem.

  • Dial-up for checking emails doesn't disconnect after checking

Hi, is there a way to ask the Treo to disconnect once it has dialed up to check for messages?  I am getting a hefty data bill as it checks in the middle of the night and does not disconnect unless i ask it to.
Post relates to: Treo 700wx (Verizon)

Thanks. I ended up taking my PC to my daughter's - she's on high speed - and I downloaded the updated versions of everything I needed. My Dial-up is too slow (26.4 kbps YIKES!) to do that... bummer. So guess I'll just have to bring my PC to town periodically to do updates.
