Difference in WRT110N vs WRT160N vs WRT310N

What is the difference besides the Gigabit Transfer which I have a gigabit switch which I had tested others and it really DID not make much difference to large ISO images to small files. Advise?

  • Comcast - WRT160N & WRT310N disconnect

This is more for advisement - information in hopes a Linksys rep occassionally reads through this.
I have both models - WRT160N & WRT310N on the comcast network.  They intermittently seize and require a reboot.
The WRT160N has a static IP on the Comcast business service (which is handled by a SMC cable modem).
    The WRT310N has standard DHCP.
Operating systems on the LAN side of both routers are either Windows XP or Vista.
When the routers seize, you cannot pass traffic wired or wireless to the devices.
After a power cycle the devices are accessible for a then unknown amount of time until the next lock up.
I would encourage business users to try a different brand or certainly model as this can become a problem.
After reading some of the material, there may be a bad DHCP broadcast that can cause the lock up, but as the WRT160N is static, it should ignore same.
    Good luck all.

    Javamarket

Connect the two Switchs to the LAN of the router & configure the router according to the comcast cable connection .....

  • WRT160N wireless is working, but not wired

    Hello,
I installed firmware 2.0.02 and configured my WRT160N using the instructions from this post:
    Post WRT160N
My wireless connection is working great from my laptop.  I am very happy with the range and speed.
However, I have a desktop that is connected to one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the router, and I’m having problems with this.
When I first start using the desktop after boot-up, or after sitting for a long time, I open IE and I get a “Page Can Not be Displayed” error.  Sometimes if I press Refresh a few times it starts working.  Other times, it doesn’t start working until I login to the Linksys.  All I do is login to the Linksys, I don’t change anything or do anything except login, then the Internet works fine from my desktop.
Another thing I’ve tried is release and renew my IP on the desktop.  That also seems to solve the problem.
Another strange thing I noticed, when connecting wirelessly from my laptop, i.e. come out of suspend mode, the network connection switches from Connected to Disconnected, then back to Connected again.  If I launch IE before this is done, I get a “Page Can Not be Displayed” error, but as long as I wait for it to say “Connected” the second time, it works great.
I have Comcast cable Internet service.  Before the 160N, I was using a Linksys 4 port router (BEFSR41?).  I never had any problems with that router wired to my desktop or laptop.  I've had that router for many years and never had any problems (very solid).
     Any ideas?
     Thanks,
    Scott
    Solved!

    Hi,
I liked the WRT160N, but it turns out that version 2 of this router is defective.
    See this post:  WRT160N Post
I returned the WRT160N and exchanged it for a WRT310N.  I've been testing the 310N with wired and wireless connections (desktop and laptop), and it's been great!  Not one problem.
Most of the Linksys home use routers use the Broadcom processor (including WRT160Nv1), but the WRT160Nv2 uses a Ralink processor, and it is the only one that uses Ralink.
    Source of information
I saw one post that said they thought the 160N does not have enough memory.  The 160N has 16MB of memory.
I chose the WRT310N because it has 32MB of memory and it uses a Broadcom processor.
My theory is that 310N will be more reliable because it uses a processor that Linksys is very familiar with and is tried and tested, and also because it has more memory.
The downside is that the 310N is $35 more expensive than the 160N.
I've also read that the 310N has heat issues, so I propped it up on an angle so it can get better air circulation.
    Cheers!

  • WRE54G is already connected to WRT160N Router, but can not get access to internet?

    Hello,,,
I have seven of rung expanders WRE54G and all settings i set as this link
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4104&p_created=11611...
    * same wireless SSID name
    * same Channle  ( What is the difference between the channel number 6 & number 11 for example?)
    * security ( i used WPA2 mixed, that is not in WRE54G, so what i should use)
    * Each Expander has own IP address as 192.168.1.2 up to 192.168.1.8
Is the gateway mean the main IP of router 192.168.1.1 ?
all those expanders connected with WRT160N ( the Link gets Blue light)
but my laptop can not get the IP address near of any of those expanders, to get the access to the internet!!!!
    What is the reason please?

I am very happy to communicate with you ( I sure i can learn some thing from you my brother )
Your words are true seven the number of expanders is not easy option
or the cause of the success of the wireless network coverage May succeed strengthened,
with one or two, but more than that needs to be a better distributor.
I think I will use RangePlus WRT110 as repeater in some floor where the wireless signal
is not can work, after connecting through the wire with the main router,
and then I can get half the reference from the repeater when i useing the WRE54G expander
    What do you think?!!
I put on my experience on this link

  • ~Xbox Live lag with WRT160N~

    READ ALL BEFORE POSTING!@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I have been having this problem for a few weeks now. When I begin playing online online, every 10 seconds or so, there is EXTREME lag casuing major problems for me in the game.
I have ugraded the firmware of my WRT160N, I have opened the required ports 88, 3074 and 53 in router settings, MTU is 1452, my network mode is mixed, channel 11, beacon interval is 75, Frag threshold is 2306, RTS threshold is 2307 and anonymous internet requests arn't blocked. I have all the correct settings on my 360................
I don't know what else to do.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The IP Address you have used is fine, you can finally try to upgrade your router's firmware, download the firmware from here , Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Do the Port Forwarding again, reduce the MTU to 1364 this time and check if that makes any difference...

  • WRT610N - Connections slows - must Release/Renew IP???? Help - Also with WRT310N

    Hello!
Here is a problem summary:  I just replaced my old WRT4G with a new WRT610N.   This never happened with my WRT54G.  At reboot of the WRT610N - I get ~6.2mbps (DSL) download speed like I have always gotten on my old router and this is the speed I'm paying for.  After 24 hours - I only get ~ 4 mbps download and after 48 hours it usually down to about 1.8 mbps......the problem is solved by going into the 610's Status Page and Releasing then Renewing the IP......it's better again and back to 6.2 for another 24 hours or so.......I also had a 310n that did the same thing and I returned it for the 610n only to have the exact same problem.....
    Details:
    CAT 6 Cable
Mounted vertically for better heat control
    - When it slowed down - I have a fan configured to cool it - cooled it so that everything was cool - not even warm to the touch - nothing changed and actually got worse - so heat doesn't seem to be an issue...
    - Primarily using 2 Wired connections and occasional wireless - but primarily this is over wired connections....
    - Firmware is most recent firmware as that is the way it came out of the box with the most recent firmware already installed
    - Had the exact same issue with the WRT310N
    - I've debugged it to the IP release/renew fixing it.......My connection comes through a Actiontec Qwest DSL modem/router but never had this problem with the WRT54G - nothing has changed there, same setup.
    - When it was slow - I bypassed the 610nand and speeds were normal - hooked it back through the router and slow until I release/renew the IP....
This is really weired and frustrating......If I can't fix it soon - I'll have to switch to another brand.....the only work around I can see is a daily release/renew - but I don't seen any programming for that feature.....
    Thoughts!!!!   THANKS!

Thanks for the suggestion.  I've already tried that and I'm at 1300 now.....also did the ping test and had it set at 1352.....but no differences....  I chated with Linksys yesterday and they told me take it back to the store and get another one.....  That won't solve this problem because I think it is a problem that linksys is simply ignoring as an issue....to have 2 routers do the same thing and both routers to be bad.....that tells me they have a problem in quality control or they don't know what's wrong......   I have one more work around I'm going to try which is to move over my dsl modem and let the linksys act as the modem.......my neighbor has it that way and his seems to work better.....we'll see....!   I'm not hold much hope and I'll probably end up returning it and just use my old G router or try another brand......

  • WRT160N Router drops connection

I have a couple laptops connected to a brand new WRT160N. Previous to putting in the new router, I never had any problems. Now that I have the new router, one of my laptops keeps dropping the connection. I have to open the wireless settings and disconnect/reconnect to get it to work. Oddly, sometimes when I do that there is no password in the connection information, but if I close it and start it again it generally works. I am using WPA2 encryption and windows XP machines.
    Any thoughts?

I have the WRT160N router, running a mixed g/n standard (though both computers connect through g) with WPA2 security. Both laptops are Windows XP, though on the one that loses connection I did upgrade from SP2 to SP3 to see if it made a difference (none). I have a NAS drive attached, but I just put that on last night. Also have an iPod docking station attached (internet radio to my stereo), but have not used it and unplugging did not seem to impact. Other than that, I think its pretty vanilla.
I am not a real tech guy, so if I missed anything important (and I assume I did) let me know.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • New WRT160N causes TV Interference

I have installed a wireless N WRT160N V3 router and it works perfectly.  Only problem is that it's causing double imaging on my TV that is on the other side of the wall.  I've moved the router as far away as I can with no improvement.  Any settings I can change that might help?  I'm out of ideas.

You may certainly try different channel on your Router(not sure if that will make a difference)...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
To change the Wireless channel click on the Wireless tab and tweak the wireless channel, see what channel gives you a Normal image on your TV...
sabretooth is right, just verify if the image is Normal when you Power down your router and double image comes back when you turn your router ON...

  • WRT310N Drops Connection

    Hello,
    I recently purchased a WRT310N (version 2.0) after using a WRT54GL for years.
Here are my issues with this router:
    1. After updating and saving settings the router will drop its IP address and won't renew it without a reset.  Connections to the router are fine, but no web access.  My WRT54GL doesn't do this, both using the same modem.
    2. I am using port forwarding to remote desktop into my PC.  I can connect initially for about 5 seconds but then the router drops connections and requires another reset.  I have reset the firmware to factory defaults twice and setup nothing but port forwarding.  The disconnects still happen.
I require remote desktop to this PC for work so it's crucial we get this functioning ASAP. It doesn't make any difference whether I'm using wired or wireless connections.  Issues are the same.

As you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 45 seconds and reconfigure all the settings again.Reduce the MTU value to 1350 and click on save settings..Under the Security tab..Uncheck Filter Anonymous Internet Requests.Power cycle the router and check..

  • WRT160N error during install

I just purchased WRT160N and during the install of LELA there is an error. " Linksys Updater failed to start- verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services" pops up during install.  Then it asks to retry and it hasn't worked or close window.  Then when says this "Setup for Linksys Advisor has failed "Fatal Error During Install" please check your settings and try again.
Help!  I am not computer savy, and don't want to start changing anything and screw it up.
Internet is working on the installed computer (I believe this is called the gateway? not wireless uses the ethernet cable)but I can't setup my wife's new laptop til this is fixed.
BTW this is a cable modem hook up if that makes a difference.  I have tried restarting, turning power off as well but still get the same problem every time.
    Thanks,
    Don

As you have mentioned that your Hardwired computer is able to go online throught the router, and now you are trying to setup your wireless computer. You dont have to run the setup disk on your computer, you can configure all the settings on your Router manually and then make your Wife's computer go online wirelessly..
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • WRT310N - very slow compared to ethernet

I was reading through firmware upgrade threads on this model, and before I upgrade, here's my issue.
    Comcast higher speed cable.
I get 35 Mbps with the computer wired via ethernet directly to the cable modem.
Both of my computers have built-in N network cards.
Using the WRT310N, both computers achieve a max speed rating of 5 Mbps upload, max of 1.6 download.
That's an amazing difference in speed.
    One Macbook
One Azus notebook running Windows 7.  Both test out about the same speeds.

I belive you should upgrade the router with a latest firmware first
And regarding the speed is concerned.. Did you checked if you plug the ethernet cable with the router into your computer does the speed increase or not..  Looking into the details that you have mentioned i belive its all wireless
If that is correct .. If yes then you can try to change the wireless channel on the router try with channel 6 , 9 or 11 and observe the connection..

  • Increasing Range in WRT310N

I've been using the WRT310N and noticed that the range is quite poor--I've noticed this in two different houses.
Any suggestions for improving the range? How about changing the advanced settings? What to change them to?
I've tried using an old repeater but it is a G repeater so it seems to actually make things worse i.e. a remote device will work slightly better with an unrepeated N signal than a repeated G (router is a in mixed mode).
I've currently got the router set to the 40 MHz radio band.
    Thanks for any help.

Seems as if they have labeled those fields pretty confusing on the v1 router. Make sure you have the latest firmware...
The WRT310N uses only the 2.4 GHz band. There are 11-13 channels on that band with different frequencies.
20 MHz is the standard width of a single channel.
In 40 MHz mode it uses two channels at the same time: the standard channel and the additional wide channel.
However, as I wrote before, 40 MHz, i.e. two channels occupy pretty much 2/3 of the total 2.4 GHz band (only channels 1, 6 and 11 don't overlap). This means you get a lot of interference with 40 MHz bandwidth in places where you have a lot of other access points.
Try 20 MHz with different standard channels or use try "Auto". See if it makes a difference.

  • Wrt310n Drop Outs

So my 310n v.1.0 router has been extremely unstable since I switched from Clearwire ISP router to Clear Wimax ISP router. It will drop out and reconnect, or sometimes just drop my connection entirely. This is really just killing any videos I attempt to watch. I've tried to do the usual with upgrading firmware, restarting and power cycling, changing beacon, thresholds, but it just doesn't seem to help at all. Also, if anything the newer 1.09 firmware disconnects worst than the 1.07 I went back to.
The only difference I notice is that with Clearwire, I was given a "normal ip" eg. 76.45.55.55 in the "Status" tab in the configuration page. Now the IP is constantly 192.168.15.x no matter what Mac Address I clone, which I find a bit odd. Says I'm in Georgia apparently when I'm clearly not.
Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks.

Thanks. Yeah, I know about resetting the whole thing/reconfiguring after upgrading (30/30/30), since I've actually done this in the past like 100 times, unfortunately. It sort of solved itself back then, right after I gave up on fixing it each time oddly. Doesn't seem to help here, the new firmware is just well, bad and these connection drop outs haven't fixed themselves this time. Tried different mtu 1000,1300,1350, 1500, just doesn't do anything.
Starting to think the Clear Wimax router might just be incompatible with my wrt310n or something. You mentioned the IP is private, I've no idea why that is, I guess it's the Clear routers IP or something.

  • WRT160N WiFi Problem's when connect to Roku XDS

I have a Roku box  which is connected  to my router WRT160N on wifi  and I have a down speed of 12.1mbps but my roku box loads files very slow and re buffers , but when I connected to direct wired I worked well.
I think that my router WiFi does not support the live streaming to roku or any other devices my roku works well on recorded streams like netflix and Pandora hulu and so but apps like yupputv which streams live from India does work well on WRT160N WiFi router but this yupptv app on roku works well when wired  so I decided to go for a new router which is more powerful an WRT160N
But when I looked at Linksys i could not decide which is a better WiFi device to stream live movies. Can anyone help me out fixing this issue i have or suggesting me for a new router ?

You can try changing the advanced wireless settings on the current router.
Open the setup page of the router. Click on wireless tab and go to Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.
Go to the setup tab. Change the MTU size to 1365. Save the settings and power cycle the router.
See if that makes any difference.
Did you try to update the firmware on the current router? If not then try to update the firmware on the router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 10 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
If you want to go for a new router, you can try Linksys E3000 router. The Linksys E3000 is a powerful dual-band Wireless-N router optimized for wireless entertainment. Connect your Blu-ray players, DVRs, and gaming consoles, and enjoy the smoother and faster HD video streaming and wireless gaming performance that simultaneous dual-band technology enables.

  • WRT310N gives my wireless Xbox 360 terrible connection when PC is wired

When my wired PC is linked to my WRT310N, my wireless Xbox 360 has a terrible connection and is repeatedly disconnected. When my PC is not hooked up, my Xbox 360 gets a perfect connection, just like it's wired. I've had this router for around a year and just ran into this problem 4 days ago. Discovered the problem an hour ago.

If the above settings didn't made much difference to the connection on your XBOX, then i think you need to upgrade the firmware of your Router.
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in search tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
