Direct Still Image capture from video

How would I capture a still image with a firewire connection from a camcorder capturing all the pixels from that image. I was hoping to use Image Capture or Quicktime but I have not found a solution.
The solution needs to be apple scriptable.
Thanks,
Drew

You could use iMovie to "copy" a frame. A DV camera would be 720X480 image.
QuickTime Pro could also be used as it supports Firewire connected cameras and has a "Record" feature.
Simply pause or stop capture and scrub through (right left arrow keys) to find your frame. Copy, open new Player window and paste. Export to Picture and choose your format.
QuickTime has an AppleScript library. iMovie does not.

  • History of images "captured" from video

Usually when you import an image, in the History panel you find the first entry states when it was imported eg. "Import (date time)"
Could we have something the same in the History panel for images captured from video?  At present there is nothing there when you first check it out and you can't truely go back to the start (unless you managed to remember to take a snapshot before you touch a slider.)
I'm using the Windows 32 bit version.  The above issue is consistent with both the DSLR (Canon 5D II) and normal video I borrowed from my Dad.

    Hi Sarah,
Good idea. I can't promise you anything on this one but I'll raise it with the team.

  • Image capture from avi vfw device can't find video modes

    Hello
Here my issu, i have implemented image capture from a video device using jmf 2.1.1e performancepack, using a webcam everything is fine but when i use the video capture source i want to use i can only work with format 720x480 pal and i require 720x576 pal.
jmf seem not to reconize video format from this source, but the video is correcty displayed and image correctly captured. I'm surprised it is half working:decoding&render is ok to but not format choice.
I have check it is not because i'm in ntsc mode (ntsc is 720x480) because my analogic source is pal and color are correct (if with device software i change to ntsc mode i have a black&with but using jmf i'm in color so i'm in pal mode)
Difference bettween the webcam and my device is that my device is an avi encoder so in jmf webcam is javax.media.format.YUVFormat and my device com.sun.media.format.AviVideoFormat
    i have tried many thing:
install codec pack (divx6, another codec pack)
    try to use Fobs4JMF
    register in JMStudio IBMdecoder, jffmpeg
    Tanks for any help
the device support many configuration UYVY 235x288 352x576 .... 720x576 but JMF offer only 1 video mode for this device.

  • Image Capture from iPhone to OS X and File Permissions

Hello.  I'm running Lion 10.7.3 and have an iPhone 4S and iPad 2.  When I use the Image Capture app to transfer pictures and videos from my devices to OS X it works great with the exception of one problem.  Every file that it copies over ends up with permissions of:
    (Me): Read & Write
    everyone: No Access
This is problematic because when my wife is logged into her profile or anyone else tries to view these files via shared folders, they can't see them.  I'm putting them into a folder I created on "Macintosh HD".  The folder that they are in has permission of:
    (Me): Read & Write
    wheel: Read only
    everyone: Read only
Each time I import I suppose I could drop into Terminal and run a command to fix the issues but there must be a better way.
Any ideas?  Thank you in advance.

    Got a solution using Automator.
    Create a workflow like:
This is an Image Capture Plugin. When you open Automator select Image Capture as the type of workflow and select these two actions.
Copy Finder Items will take the image from Image Capture and copy to your disk. Select the folder you want the image to go to in the To: pulldown. You should select the /Users/Shared folder and any subfolder you wish. I made a folder named Images.
In the second action make sure Pass Input: is set to as arguments and then add the chmod 644
Then exit Automator giving the workflow a name. In Image Capture you should see the workflow you just created
in the Import To: pulldown. Select it. Now when you import the fiels wil be copied to the folder you specified and the permissions will be set to 644 rw for you r for everyone else.
good luck. post back if you have any questions.
(and this is in the Lion list so my question about Aperture above is meaningless! )

  • Live Capture from Video Mixer

I'm having a problem with getting my Powerbook to communicate with my Videonics MXPro Dv digital video switcher. The switcher has firewire out which works when I connect to a camera but I can't get Final Cut 5 to connect with it. I have set up my device setting as non-controllable but with no success. I am trying to capture SD footage of school musical. Any thoughts?

    Additional thoughts...
If you have a DV camera/deck, I'd try to use that instead of the Canopus. This way, you could record to tape what you're capturing live.
Granted, there is timecode differences between the two, but it serves as a backup, should the live capture fail. (and trust me, it will at some point...Mr. Murphy says so)
For our workflow, we do a couple of things...for mission critical events, we ISO record to tape in each camera and to a Deck (live to tape), as well as the live capture into FCP.
We then capture all tapes and cut shows from that. This way, we have DV recorded quality from camera tapes, along with proper timecode, which comes in handy, should we ever have to revisit the project. (the live capture becomes our redundant backup recording, which we dump after the show is a lock)
For non-mission critical, we just record the live cut to the deck, along with the live capture into FCP. We can cut from either, then we can dump the live captures from the drives (saving valuable disk space) and still have tape backup to re-cut if needed.

  • Confirmation....still image dimensions from 16:9 720x480

    Hi
I just exported a frame from a 720x480 16:9 DV NTSC video clip.  I tried doing it from Premiere and it would only give me a bmp choice.  I then did it from Streamclip, which gave me TIF, JPG and BMP choices but it did not really matter, because TIF is only 8 bit, just like the BMP in premiere...
The dimensions of the still image ( frame ) are (according to ps) 853 x 480 .
Is that correct for all frames exported from 720x480 16:9 DV NTSC videos ?
Reason I ask, is I want to create images that match ( size wise ) so I can make a slide show on a DVD eventually...
    Thanks...
    Rod
ps  funny, I thought the 720 dimension would be favored and the height would be "squeezed" to something smaller than 480...for the 16:9 ratio.

    Hi
Ah Ha !  Geez...I KNOW that the pixels are not square in NTSC, and ARE square in bitmaps, but I didn't even THINK about that last night when I was dealing with this...How can I be so dumb sometimes ??  Geez....
    Thanks Harm.
If you could elaborate a little....I'm not very swift with math and ratios.
I just got out the calculator....and looked at GSpot...with a 720x480 widescreen AVI opened...
It is saying, par 1.185 (32:27)...for this particular AVI file that I made exported from Premiere last night...
Now, if I multiply 720 x 1.185 I get 853 !!!   How cool is THAT....so I guess that's how I come up with the dimension of a bitmap when I do this in future...
    And when I multiply 720 x .2121 (rather than 1.2121) I get 152.7...close enough !....same as 853...
How come there's two different ways of doing that ??
But my numbers are weird for 1.1212.....  what am I doing wrong ??
Should there be one way to go about doing this math stuff ???
Anyhow, you've already answered my question and thanks a lot....   square pixels !  ..didn't even think of that...

  • Working with Still Images in a Video

Let's say I'd like to use a RAW still Image from my 40D Canon, which is 3888 x 2592, a 3:2 aspect ratio. I'm inserting it into a HD video, 720p, at a 16:9 ratio (1.0). I'd like to keep it large initially so I can pan or zoom in or out as desired. What's my workflow?: If I "Scale to Frame" it fits top to bottom but not laterally. If I show it in the monitor at 100%, it's much too large (but good for panning etc). How do you folks handle this, to work with the Ken Burns effects, keeping the frame aspect ratio correct, and keeping image quality good?
    kdoc

That helps to a great extent: thanks Bill and everyone. A few thoughts and questions in follow up. I don't see under preferences anything about Scale to Frame Size (where is it in PrP/CS5?), but it does seem to come in by default not scaled. By right clicking the clip on the timeline on a PC I get the option to check or uncheck that possibility.
I also don't see Effects/Motion/Scale: where is that?
If I want to show my entire photo, as I originally worked it in Photoshop, I guess I need to then check Scale to Frame Size. And of course it doesn't fill the 16:9 aspect ratio laterally, even in landscape orientation, certainly not in portrait orientation. Do you leave it as is, with black margins, and/or do you crop to 16:9 in Photoshop before bringing it in the PrP to eliminate the black margins? (Bill has addressed this in his previous  post). I'm gathering that if you don't want any black to show, a 3:2 DSLR Image within on a High Def (say 1280x720) video requires cropping. Do you folks crop in PS when resizing--you can't batch that. I see that Bill sometimes puts a new background behind, to eliminate the black margins.
Where in PS do you set pixel aspect ratio: I can't find it, though I only looked in PSx64, and not in PS x32? Actually I don't think one needs to answer this in PrP CS5: the image seems to come into PrP with the correct aspect ratio--for my Canon 40D RAW images it comes in at 3888x2592 (1.0) if I'm editing for a 1280x720 HD DSLR. I can convert my image to a PSD file in PS as Bill suggests (TIFF will work too).
I'm thinking that the new CS5 with Mercury Playback and 64 bits may handle these larger RAW images fine--but time will tell.
I don't quite get what Scale to Frame Size does (it seems to keep the height at full frame, and the frame aspect ratio constrained). or (in the dropdown) Fit vs. 50% or 100% does? Is it changing the actual image dimensions or just those which show up on screen? For example, I made an image in PS exactly 1280 x720 and brought it into a PrP video project which was also 1280x720, but the image overlapped at 100%. It fit the frame perfectly at "Fit" (from the dropdown).???
Remember that in PS, you can handle both portrait and landscape images for resizing with File--Automate--Fit Image. Just use the largest of the two pixel dimensions for both height and width. Or use Image Processor.
    Thanks all

  • Turning still images into a video-help please!

Hello, I have Adobe Premiere Elements 10 editing system, and I am currently working a summer project. One of the things I would like to do is create a video from still images, but I am having a problem, because the images I chose and increased their time line look too choppy, but I want a more flow-ey look. What should the speed or duration be for each picture? Are there other effects that can assist the making of my still picture video? Also, I am up for any other suggestions others have on making a smooth, still image video. Thanks!

    Neweditor16
I was not sure of my schedule for later this evening so I am going to post a sample scenario, assuming that you have Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 7 64 bit.
    1. Place your 10 each at 3680 x 2760 4:3 pixels photos in sequence order in a desktop folder. Do not bother to resize them beforehand ONLY if your Windows 7 is 64 bit and not 32 bit and your installed RAM exceeds 4 GB.
    2. Open Premiere Elements 10 and set the project preset for
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p30 @ 29.97
    3. Go to Edit Menu/Preferences/General and remove the check mark next to the option "Default Scale to Frame Size".
    4. Next, use Get Media/Files and Folder to bring your desktop folder into the Organize/Media area. From there drag the whole unopened folder to the start of Timeline Video Track 1. When you do, your 10 photos will be on the Timeline in the order that you placed them in the folder.
    5. Click on Photo 1 to select it. Then go to Properties Palette/Motion Panel expanded and the Scale property. Set the Scale at 52.6%.
    6. Go back to the Timeline and click on Photo 1 to select it. Go to Edit Menu, select Copy. Then select the other 9 photos (all at one time), right
click anywhere in the selection, and select and click on Paste Attributes.
    7. To give a Timelapse effect to your 10 photos, you are going to decrease the duration of each photo. You do not want to be dealing in seconds, rather frames (1 to 5 frames which is 0.033 to 0.165 seconds in a 30 frames per second set up).
    a. first we look at the effect with the photo duration of 5 frames...select all 10 photos all at one time....right click anywhere in the selection and select Timeline Stretch. In the Time Stretch dialog change duration from 00;00;05;00 (5 seconds) to 00;00;00;05 (5 frames equivalent to 0.165 seconds)...note the Timelapse effect that is achieved after you render the Timeline content by pressing the Enter key to get the best possible preview of the Timeline content played back in the Edit area monitor.
    b. If you are not satisfied with "a", the repeat, but this time change the duration of all to 00;00;00;03 (3 frames equivalent to 0.150 seconds)...note the Timelapse
effect that is achieved after you render the Timeline by pressing the Enter key to get the best possible preview.
    c. If you are not satisfied with "b", then repeat, but this time change to the lower possible set 00;00;00;01 (1 frame equivalent to 0.033 seconds)..note the Timelapse effect achieved after you render the Timeline by pressing the Enter key ot get the best possible preview.
See what that looks like. At this time, I would not bother with transitions. More than one transition placement at a time can be done by selecting all the photos and using Timeline Menu/Apply Default Transition. But, with such short duration photos, I would need to think about changing the transition default duration.
And, I see no point in pans and zooms with the short duration that are used.
These are some basic ideas about Timelapse in Premiere Elements.

Notes: To select more than one clip at a time, you can hold down the Shift key and click each photo. Or, you can use the mouse cursor tip to draw a rectangle around the photos to select them.
Please let us know if any of this needs clarification.
    Thank you.

  • Why can I no longer import EDITED photo from my iPad to my Mac using Image Capture from Snapseed app?

Why can I no longer import EDITED photo from my iPad to my Mac using Image Capture? This is farcical and a real problem having to email them individually to myself and is totally inefficient time wise compared to previously using image capture! Why change this when it was working well and very quickly until the latest change. Now I have to move files from downloads into an appropriate folder, after emailing each individual edited image to myself, then I have to open in Photoshop and rename the file. This is ludicrous and takes forever to do!

Thank you! I suppected it would be in the settings somewhere. I' ve much to learn...get myself into trouble pushing buttons I don't really understand.

  • Taking screen captures from video

I have a video on iphoto and i want to know if there is a way to save screen captures from that video. Thank you

With "Grab" you can capture the screen, a window, a section, or a timed screen.
You will find "Grab" in Applications -> Utilities.
Just start "Grab", and then in iPhoto navigate your video to the frame you want to capture, then take the screen shot.

  • Quality of still images imported from i-Photo

I've recently got a new Mac, with updated version of i-Movie. Struggling to come to terms with it, but one major problem is quality of still images.
Whatever I do, they look rubbish in i-Movie. I've tried all sorts of settings, Ken Burns etc, still nowhere near the crystal images on the previous version of i-Movie.
I've read that we're not supposed to look at quality in i-Movie, but only on burning, but this is a nuisance, and anyhow when I made a Quicktime movie it was no better.
Can anyone help? And why, when something is supposed to be better, is it actually worse?
    Thanks.

You might try more closely matching the screen resolution of iMovie, which unless you are going widescreen is 720x540... There is not much sense in putting in more dpi than the video format can handle. You can get some distortion when it compresses the images.
I do find that they never look as good in iMovie on my TV as they did on the computer however. Ken Burns or whatever we try.
Also, iMovie will stretch smaller than 720x540 images to fit the dimension of the screen, which makes those look truly awful. We usually put those on a black background (in Photoshop) so that they stay at the smaller size.

  • Still images interspersed in video all with the original audio

I have what I think should be a very simple task. I have a 1 hour video of a school show. I want the soundtrack to remain intact. I simply want to take still images and replace the video images for certain chunks of the school show. The result should be a smooth original audio with the original video interrupted for 4-5 second periods with other images. For a bonus, it would be nice if the stills cross faded to the original video (without affecting the audio).
I have been trying to get the precision editor to let me do this and cannot get it to happen cleanly and reliably. I keep getting the audio duplicated or dropped audio. And if I try to add cross fades it is even worse. The help video on the precision editor does not make it clear to me how to do this.
In some PC programs, I know you can split the video independently of the audio and then delete the video clip and replace it with a still image. It does not look like iMovie is that intuitive.
If there is another way to do this, I would love to know about it.
    Please help.
    Thanks

In iMovie Preferences, make sure you have turned on Advanced Tools.
Drag the photo to the video frame where you want it and drop it. When a pop-up menu comes up, choose Cutaway.

  • Changing default still image time from 150 frames to timecode option?

I want to change the default duration for still images under Preferences in CS6. It is showing up as 150 frames by default. Is there a way to change this so I can just enter it as timecode 00;00;03;00 instead?
    Thanks.

Most of the time, 30 frames per second is a safe way to calculate things on a 29.97 sequence. If you really have a problem with that, and many animators do, since you are using still images, use a custom setting for your sequence. Create one using 30 frames per second and use non-drop frame timecode. Use square pixels and No Fields (Progressive).
Now, if you are turning this over to someone for use in a commercial, for example, where the exact number of frames is required so that 30 seconds is not exceeded, then that is a different story.
Your second question - sorry - but you really want to determine the duration prior to importing the image. Once you have the image in the project, the duration is already set and must be changed for each and every one individually. As far as I know, you can't set one and then copy the duration to the others.
